What riff should have been on here?
naughty naughty by danger danger.
Talisman - Standing On Fire
Craaft - Illusions
Danger Danger - Live It Up
Stone Soup - Can't Sell Me Love (that's 90s but the style is all 80s).
Stand Up And Shout Dio (Vivian Campbell)
Somebody Save Me - Cinderella
Night Ranger - Don't Tell me you Love Me
Nantucket - born in a honky tonk
Ratt's "Way cool Jr." is just the sexiest freaking lick of the 80's. I'm an early thrash head and even I cant deny that riff.
Probably my 1st to play song.😊
Before I started gravitating toward thrash and away from glam metal, Ratt was one of my favorite bands - and they remain so to this day.
Ratt has got some crunchy riffs.
I also like Round and Round!
@Bigscott4130 the best song I think they wrote.
Agreed
Savatage: 24 Hours Ago, hell you could make an entire video about Cris Oliva riffs/solos
XYZ: Face Down in the Gutter
Firehouse: Overnight Sensation, ( yes, is from 1990 but common...)
Shark island: Paris Calling
Gary Moore: Speak for Yourself, generally speaking anything from Gary's 80's hardrock era.
Y&T : Mean Streak, Dave Meniketti needs more love.
Say What You Will by Fastway. Killer riff!
Saw them live and they were amazing!
Know Fastway & one of the first ones I learned.
"We Could Be Together" and "Crazy Nights" - Loudness. "Balls To The Walls" - Accept. "Miracle Man" - Ozzy. "Lighting Strikes Again" - Dokken. "Hungry" - White Lion. "Wicked Sensation" - Lynch Mob.
For Loudness I would add Let It Go.
First thing that pops to my mind: Ronni Le Tekrø → TNT - 10.000 Lovers (In One)
I wanted to say that but couldn’t remember if that’s was 80’s or early 90’s. Ronnie’s picking hand is ridiculous.
@@roscoepcoltrane23 That's 80s. 1989 to be exact. That riff and Caught Between the Tigers are what made me aware of Ronni.
His muting is just amazing! Love that sound.
Always liked Ronnie’s playing
Any of the TNT stuff is good 😂
Bang Tango "Someone Like You" so 80's.
Ah man I forgot about Bang Tango. Those guys rocked!
I worked as a roadie for a local NY band. We played at Bang Tangos record release party at The Cat Club. They rocked and were really cool , definitely had their own thing going on
@ my band played someone like you back in high school.
Love Bang Tango!
Breaking up a heart of stone
I hardly hear anyone mention Dave Meniketti and Y&T summertime Girls. Also King’s X Ty Tabor Over my head!!🎸🎸🤘🏻🤘🏻
Y&T massively underrated.
Saw them when they were Yesterday & Today at the Starwood in Hollywood. What a show
Best live album opener song duo ever on Open Fire, I wish that was a double album!
@@erozCIt would have been killer as a double! Dave’s Black Tiger solo is killer and his “Helicopter” technique. Not sure why they were over looked.
Dave Meniketti is one of the most underappreciated guitarists of the '80s.
Marc Diglio from XYZ and the song Inside Out and Face Down In The Gutter. Just killer IMO!
This. Two of the greatest riffs ever and his tone on those two albums will go down as some of the best of all time.
@@Mitch.Engel84Especially on the second record. Face Down in the Gutter slays.
Was gonna say this. And HH Boogie is better than both
@@RobSchauland1911 Almost blew my back window out of my car after installing my first sub woofer cranking that song
@@mattcrumbley6923agree 100%. HH Boogie's riff is just nasty (in a good way).
I still listen to those 1st two XYZ frequently.
DeGarmo/Wilton
NM-156 is a masterclass in dual guitar solos!
"Heartbreak Blvd" by Shotgun Messiah
Explorer by shotgun messiah even better
The main riff to Nervous slays!
yep
last video i said he needs to check mount some Harry. Cody. all Harry’s riffs and solos are incredible
@@cleatusandclovis1845 super underrated band for that genre. That debut has so many killer solos and riffs. "I'm your love's" main riff and the bridge section are so great.
The nastiest use of pick slides I've ever seen
Walkin' shoes from Tora Tora❗
Such a cool song!
Great pick!!
Thought I was the only owner of that album!
Britny Fox-Long Way to Love
XYZ-Face Down in the Gutter
Whitesnake-Bad Boys
White Lion-Hungry
Wildside-Hang on Lucy
Dokken-Burning Like a Flame
Great White-Lady Red Light
Babylon A.D-Bang go the Bells
Badlands-High Wire
I know some of these are early 90s. So many great riffs, so little time.
I was good friends with Billy Childs years ago. He plays for a Philly band called Le Compt. Mike le compt.
Great list 👍🏼
Britney Fox riff was badass
Marc Diglio is my favorite guitar player, good to see some other people mention XYZ. Britny Fox was also amazing
@AudaciousAce1989 Kitt Johnny Dee on drums.
Just remembered a great song & riff: Vernon Reid - Cult of Personality from Living Color! That guy is phenomenol guitarist!!
That is a killer riff.
Open letter to a landlord I think is his best Tone and such a killer song. The opening chord progression after the intro is sooo killer
Babylon A.D when the hammer swings down, or bang go the bells!
I love how strong those prechoruses are on the whole first album. Hooks for days!
The first album was fantastic, but the second was so disappointing! I've never quite forgiven them...
Skid Row - Slave To The Grind or Monkey Business!
My band played Monkey Business a few times, that riff is killer played thru my boogie mark iv amp. 🍻
@@ArtGuitarLTX that was a weird flex.
91
One of My favorite albums
Sykes is HIGHLY underated!!
Krokus has some killer songs too. Back seat rock n roll, midnite maniac, screaming in the night, our love, all some of my favs
Headhunter
Tyketto 'Forever Young'!!!!
Good one!!!
Yngwie I’ll see the light tonight is a badass riff
I was going to post this too since he was talking about great 80's Yngwie riffs.
Disciples of Hell !
I Am A Viking - riff totally sets the mood.
Any 80s tune from Gary Moore would be a great fit for this list too. Everyone know his Thin Lizzy and blues stuff, but in between those he had so much killer 80s stuff.
Sykes my alltime favorite! 🙂
Love the 80’s related videos. I just got my first Charvel today. It lived up to the hype. Best guitar I’ve ever played in my life!
I got a Charvel 3 weeks ago after playing Gibson and Fender for years. I love it!!
@@scoobsdogg I’m a Fender or Squier strat guy. I’ll never go back. I want more Charvels now.
Which Charvels did you guys get?
Which one did you guys get? I personally want a DK 24 Floyd Rose. The Snow White model with Gold hardware. I'm normally not a fan of that matchup but on that guitar it just slaps so hard...
I own an EVH Wolfgang Special. Neck finish is the same as the Charvels natural necks. Absolutely amazing guitar so I can believe very easily Charvelle's are beasts.
@@OlePalmer-t6zI wanna know too! Lol
Awesome video !! Love all these !! I have some picks for a part 2!!! Extreme- Teachers Pet
Van Halen- Drop Dead Legs
Motley Crue- Too young to fall in love
Ozzy Osborne- Never
"Harem Scarem - If There Was A Time." This came out in the very early 90s, but both the riff and the solo are amazing. Pete Lesperance is very underrated.
Pete blow my mind when I saw his live in 2002 “Live at the Gods” His playing is so melodic and accurate 👌🎶 Harem Scarem are awesome.
Incredibly underrated! Hands down my favorite guitarist/songwriter.
This is one of the greatest solos ever!!!
Never Say Never by Triumph. Rik Emmett is painfully underrated. Probably 'cause he's Canadian.
Rik is elite, his playing/song writing is on another level. You're more than likely right that being from Canada has a lot to do with being overlooked
I think "It Doesn't Matter" is the most underrated RATT riff. "Don't Bite The Hand That Feeds" is another one too.
Time to stretch the heck out your left hand,... intro riff from "Modern day cowboy" from Tesla.
That's a good one!
Nice! Firehouse - Mama didn't raise no fool is another good one. Similar style bands.
Shotgun Messiah - I'm your love. Very intense and mean riff, sounds like late Rhoads. I know everyone knows about their Heartbreak Blvd., but this one is a diamond in the rough.
White Lion - If My Mind Is Evil.
Very Lynch-like sounding riff, quite intimidating and impressive.
Extreme - Little Girls..
Nuno deeply nodded to Aerosmith with this epic piece of music.
Pantera - Proud To Be Loud. I know it was cover of Keel's song. But the way how Dime played it... Just flawless!
Steve Stevens - Pet The Hot Kitty. Its's very easy and fun to play. But Steve showed his skills to write a memorable riffs again. Bluesy and groovy!
King's X - Over My Head. Must have for everyone who's into rock guitar. It has Hendrix vibes, yet Tabor's signature tone!
Harem Scarem - No Justice. I know it has a stunning solo. But riff is very challenging and full of these syncopated notes.
Tesla - No Way Out. D-tuned masterpiece! What a groove!
Shotgun
"Mean Streak", by Y & T....
All day long !!!
(Oh, yeah.... and "Face Down In The Gutter", by XYZ.....)
I’ll throw in another Jake E Lee riff. The song “Ultimate Sin” has pretty cool riff!
You missed in Steve Lynch from Autograph as an underrated 80’s lead. “Turn up the radio” solo. He also did a “Hotlicks” video
We've heard that before. Super cool song though
Teasin' Pleasin' from Dangerous Toys
The intro riff to No More Mr Nice Guy has always stuck out with me. Always gives me an Angus Young/ early ac/dc vibe
Shotgun Messiah - Heartbreak Blvd
Harry K. Cody
XYZ - Inside Out
Marc Diglio
And I agree with you, Dan Huff is grossly underrated! He was incredible...just hit at the wrong time is all
Marc Diglio is amazing, he's the player other guitar players wish they knew of.
Wicked Sensation- Lynch Mob. I Don't Believe in Love - Queensryche. Metal on Metal - Anvil.
Needs more Dio. Off the top of my head, Gypsy, Straight Through the Heart, and Invisible. Savatage, In the Hall of the Mountain King. Judas Priest, the opening of Bloodstone is pretty cool.
Solid suggestions, all. I loved Savatage.
Rainbow
Gypsy is a totally balls out riff.
@@StephenCameron i was thinking of Stargazer I think
Talisman - Coming home
These guys with Jeff Scott Soto, Marcel Jacob and Fredrik Åkesson was an amazing band with so many good songs and fantastic guitar playing. Definitely worth checking out for those who love 80's rock and never heard of them before...
Tesla = Modern Day Cowboy! Thanks you made my day w this. Being 54 I loved this. Being a drummer who switched to guitar this warms my soul 🎸😎
A girl asked me what I was doing and I said trying to play Modern Day Cowboy... and she thought it was a game. I love her so much. So adorable.
You could probably make an entire video of all the sick Jake E. Lee riffs from his time in Ozzy...SUPER underrated for sure!
The First Badlands album is full of face melting riffs too. Its not that crazy to say Jake is the best player Oz ever had
XYZ Inside out, Face Down in the Gutter, Dont Say No, Feels Good, HH Boogie. Marc Diglio was the last unsung guitar hero of the 80's
Dude this series is FIRE!! Please keep it up! 🤘🏼
Babylon AD, Bang go the Bells or Dangerous Toys, Teas’n Pleas’n, their simple but they rock.
Anything by MacAlpine! And just like before... three cheers for Ty Tabor... Gretchen is 89... lots on there.
Skid Row - Mudkicker; King’s X - Lost in Germany, but SO many cool riffs; Robert, your Ibanez RBM gets me every time - so cool man!!
Somebody Save Me - Cinderella
Too Young to Fall in Love - Mötley
Feed my Frankenstein - Alice Cooper
Scared - Dangerous Toys
All You need is Rock and Roll - White Lion
80's riffs? Gotta go get you some Y&T! Dave Meniketti is incredible with catchy memorable riffs.
Kingdom Come’s first album has some killer Zeppelin inspired riffs! Was on the Van Halen’s “Monsters of Rock” tour with the heavy hitters Metallica, Scorpions and Dokken!
"Get it on" thumbs up for sure.
Thanks Robert - now I will have that Lynch riff in my head for the next month! I actually played that song in a cover band back in the 80s, still one of my faves!
Well, I mentioned Ronni LeTekro in your previous vid... so I might as well bring up "10,000 Lovers" or "Caught Between the Tigers" here!!! ☮💙🎶
The tone on 10,000 is so massive.
Great picks! Some others:
- Lay Down the Law (Keel)
- Bang Go the Bells (Babylon AD)
- World War (Icon)
- Screaming For A Love Bite (Accept)
- Long Distance Love (Loudness)
Tesla is one of my favorites from the 80s.
"Unchain The Night" was one of my favs to play. "Judgement Day" was another good riff.
Loudness - Let It Go. Such a signature riff and it's not even that complicated!
Also, now you must go check it out because it might be the same as the song from Frozen with the same name.
Great, great tune.
So much Loudness.
Mr. Brownstone Slash & Izzy crush that song.
The second Blue Murder album had some really good songs too. We All Fall Down.
Tora Tora's Guilty from the first album and Wild America and Amnesia off their second absolutely rock.
Hardline's Rhythm from a Red Car fits in here too.
Kingdom Come's Do You Like It.
Lightning strikes- Dokken
Red hot- Motley Crue
Don’t talk to strangers- Dio
Edison’s medicine- Tesla
Strange Wings from Savatage's Hall of the Mountain King. Or any other riff from that album.
Awesome series. Brings back a ton on memories from my teens. Driving my 69 Chevelle SS 396 cracking Dokken out of my Sony Supertuner II paired with Jensen 6x9’s. Damn I miss the 80’s🤘
Check the album by "HAWK", band made by legendary guitar instructor Doug Marks "Metal Method", his song "Tell the Truth" has one of the best 80's riffs and all the solos and songs on that record (that was recorded entirely by Doug on Guitar and Bass and also Matt Sorum as a session Drummer before becoming famous with Guns n Roses
YES!
Didn’t expect to see a Giant riff. Nice one! That album is amazing.
Fantastic seeing Blue Murder get a nod. Also appreciate the double dose of Lynch \m/
These are some songs I loved from the 80's. Junkyard song Hollywood, Jetboy song Feel the Shake, Rock City Angels song Deep Inside My Heart, Circus of Power song Motor, Every Mother's Nightmare song Walls Come Down EMN formed in 1987 but their first studio album did not come out till April of 1990 still a band from the tail end of the 80's.
You just named all my underground favorites!
Circus of Power was way Morrison!
Princess of the Night by Saxon and also Hall of the Mountain King by Savatage!
The entire Meltdown album by Vinnie Moore, or Iron Maidens Power Slave album. Every song is a masterclass of riffing greatness.
Jesus that tone with the Black Lp , holy shit
Awesome video as always sir.
Would like see some Scorpions on such list with the likes of:
The zoo
Dynamite
Bad boys running wild
Big city nights
And if you don’t mind going a little 80s blues, then:
Jeff Healey - “Confidence man”
Gary Moore - “Out in the fields” and his cover of “Don’t let me be misunderstood”.
Great job again 😊
Jeff Healy fucking ripped! Colin James is another outstanding player and needs more recognition as well
Bro! Finally someone giving credit to judgment Day by whitesnake. I honestly prefer that song over still of the night and I think that riff is super underrated for how heavy it was in the '80s!
This is on my top 5 Whitesnake songs.👌🏻
I just saw Tony Franklin talk about Blue Murder on SBL. Loved that first album.
Fastway! Say What You Will. Fast Eddie Clark and Dave King.
I thought about that same thing.
@ they were awesome.
That just defined the heavy guitar riff on MTV.
Have a look at shy , breaking down the walls and sleeze beez , stranger in paradise .
I am a Viking! Heck yes! Great tune, this on is off Marching Out - saw him (for the seond time!)on that tour and he was amazing. I would now suggest everyone check out ALcatraz - No Parole for Rock and Roll. Yngwie in a true band setting, some of his very best riffs
Love how he matches the guitar to the riff too..nice little touch!
In Your Direction by Ratt has an awesome intro. I thought for sure you'd mention "In My Dreams" when talking about Dokken.
I believe Don wrote the riff for “In My Dreams”. Surprise. George didn’t like the song.
So glad you included Time To Surrender, one of my favourite riffs ever!
Judgment day is Steve Vai, he played all the guitars on “Slip of the Tongue” as Adrian Vandenberg had a wrist injury. In fact Adrian Vandenberg didn’t play on any Whitesnake album until 1997’s “Restless Heart” (apart from redoing the solo on Here I go again on 1987). He also did the acoustic live album “Starkers in Tokyo” and that’s it.
Dude thanks I knew the solo and dubs in Judgment Day had to be Steve. Wasn't sure about the riff. Also didn't know that about Adrian!
@ yeah, ironically he was the face of Whitesnake guitar in the 80’s , and yet he played one solo on one record 🤷♂️
Saw Whitenake live numerous times. Headlining the "Donnington Castle"" in the UK in 1990 was the best. Steve Vai played all the guitars on "Slip of The Tongue" due to Adrian's wrist injury as the other gentleman stated above. Adrian in interviews always stated he regretted not playing in the studio on "Slip of the Tongue" as he had some different ideas from Steve. Also for the "Judgenent Day" riff Steve plays the "A Power Chord" in open position the with open A string and first finger on the 2nd Fret on the D string and not at the 5th Fret E string and 7th fret A string.
Canadian band «Deaf Dealer» song : Blood and sand (verse riff)
Scared by Dangerous Toys
That song is amazing on so many levels, also how many Alice Cooper references can one fit into a song (and even from "Dada" album, 'I need a vodka quick'), it's really cool!
Really unique approach to the solo section chords too...seems dumb-cluck simplistic to just move up the scale once every four counts, but it works amazingly well...every bar seems novel and surprising and casually defies all the clichés.
Danny Latekro from TNT
Luke Morley from Thunder
Rik Emmett from Triumph
Uncle RV from XYZ
Lastly, Joe "Cool" LaFerlita from Roxus are highly underrated. Would love to hear some of their riffs on your channel.
Vivian Campbell.
... that's all you needed to say!
.. Reb riffs all day.. (witness solo)
For a Million Years is one of my all-time favorite solos. George uses so much texture in that solo. I freaking love it.
Blue Murder was CRIMINALLY underrated
Thanks, Robert. That's all what I need now!! I'd vote to "Don't tell me you love me" by Night Ranger!
Cinderella
Push push
Gypsy road.
Last mile
White lion
Tell me
Killer dwarfs
Keep the spirit alive
Britney fox
Girl school
Long way to love (played right you can do it I know)
These are a few of many B side forgotten riffs.
Somebody save me was my real 1st song I learned to play.
I love 80's week man! The new course is awesome as always. Thanks!
I love Blue Murder, Sykes kicks ass
the best guitarist in my opinion
Thanks for bringing up those riffs, very refreshing! Also, some killer guitars. Thank you
If that counts, Hardline's Taking Me Down and Rhythm For A Red Car!
Came out in 92' but it's so 80's. It's actually Neal Schon on guitar on that entire album, and the latter riff was actually made on Steve Vai's 7 string :D
Will also add so many riffs from the first Firehouse album! Shake and Tumble, Overnight Sensation, Lover's Lane :)
Hardline was awesome too!
Nice touch playing the Winger/Reb Beach lick on a Voyager. I have always wanted one of those!
No Bullet Boys “Smooth Up”?
Dig it
"Morning After" is probably the single song I would say most accurately gives me that Sunset Strip vibe that only certain ones can. You literally feel hung over on blow and stinky from unprotected sex. Hard to explain to someone.
It was a unique time. We partied so f'n hard it's a miracle anyones still alive. Peace!
Warren De Martini,...."Shame, Shame, Shame"
Man, anyone who can play this main riff and make it sound like Warren has got the special mojo.
The only person I've ever seen play Shame Shame Shame correct other than warren is Doug Rappoport.
Or…..Way Cool jr 😎
That's my favorite Ratt riff. Just listened to it the other day.
I think over my head by King‘s X He’s an amazing rip as well. Ty Tabor is such an underrated guitarist. Go check out the first four or five Kings X albums.
Both of your 80s courses are top notch ! 🎸🎶
Here’s another one you could do: Tyketto - Forever Young
Oh man never heard this before its awesome!!
My favourite 80s Riff!
Totally agree about Excitable, always love playing that one
Savatage / Chris Oliva!!!
Thanks for this list Rob, I've searched every one on RUclips so the algorithm will search out similar 80's rock bands I missed back in the day and load them up on my feed in future. Any chance you can do a top 50 hair metal bands?
There were a lot mentioned that I have always thought were the great unknown, underrated riffs of the 80s. However, two bands that I rarely see get mentioned in these kind of things is Heaven edge with songs like “skin to skin” and “Don’t stop, don’t go”. Some great riffs and lead playing on those songs. Another one is the band Spread eagle with “ switch blade, serenade”, and “broken city”. Spread Eagle was one of those bands that had very talented musicians that just sounded so gritty, and raw. The intro build up to switch blade. Serenade is just pure, in your face, 80s metal.
Definitely Fastway. They did the soundtrack for Trick or Treat. One of my favorite movies.
