My definition of gouache is an opaque watercolor. As long as you don't add too much water, they will dry opaque like acrylic paint. And once a layer dries completely, you can add another color on top without bleeding. They dry faster than acrylics. If you want to make the gouache color lighter, please don't add more water. Instead, mix in white gouache. If you're interested in watching tutorials about using gouache, I highly recommend Jess Chung.
Watching this video after buying a bunch of stuff just to test (it wasn't lost on me that for the price I paid for a bunch of markers, colored pencils, pens etc... I could have bought 1 nice set of something. However, doodling about with these budget sets provided several hours of amusement so it is kind of like buying a ticket to a show). Mostly happy with my purchases. The big disappointment was with the colored pencils. I got the Macaron set of pencils because from the website it looked like a dupe of a dupe - the Brutfuners which themselves copied Holbein. I have the Holbeins but not the Brutfuners. Was hoping that these were the Brutfuners as it wouldn't be out of the norm for a discount shop to get a big shipment from China of overstock. However, it was not to be. That said, they weren't that bad. Nicely pigmented. Good colors. The pencils weren't particularly scratchy. The full regular set of colored pencils was a different story. Very under pigmented. All the colors - even the dark ones - super light and just a lot of wax and filler. They now are my least favorite pencils (and I'm very forgiving. I love my craft store brands and my fav colored pencil recently is Michael's Creatology set for kids - fun highly pigmented set). I normally don't judge $5 products as I would something more expensive. It was just disappointing because, based on the pencil barrel, it was a nice mix of colors. The oil/soft pastel collection was fine. Sort of crumbly but a nice palette. I had hoped to get the full 48 set of oil pastels but it looks like those aren't available anymore and instead there's a mixed Ppastels set of soft and oil - 24 each. Not the easiest to blend but not bottom of the barrel. I'm not an expert on markers. They seem OK. The paint sticks were on par with the some craft store brands and are the usual fun. I did like the skin set of crayons. They were kind of crumbly but so are others. Good amount of pigment [I keep coming back to that but that really is one of the big differences between budget brands and something more expensive].
I have bought five and below craft supplies and been happy with everything i have gotten. Which was alcohol markers, oil based markers which i havent used yet, watercolors, pencil sharpener. So far i have liked everything. Thanks for a great video. 👍😊
I love these alcohol markers (the neurtals)!! The colors do NOT match the label, but they are fun. I wish they had other colors. We don't have that many good art supplies at my local store. Thanks for sharing!
I'm using the gauche while watching the video, I've noticed it dries more opaque and thin out pretty well when I actually try. I usually use the gauche for the opaque/matte effect. I love the water paper color I got from there, some brushes cause I don't worry about ruining them (and the handles are fun), a couple garden sculptures I used my own paint on after putting on gesso, some cheap watercolor brushes that actually are really cheap but fun to doodle with. Everything there so far I've enjoyed EXCEPT speakers and headphones, they don't last long.
Very helpful and fun review. Def heading over to that place pronto. Always a sucker for inexpensive art supplies. I have the Himi gouache so will pass on that item but the markers and oil pastels (such pretty colors!) and the light tracing thingy --I'll be looking for. Thx
The Dollar Tree has a larger usb light board for $5. It fits standard 8x11. It's really flimsy and needs a bit more reinforcement but it works well for the price.
That !ight box looks great. You can move an image around if it's larger. Being able to trace things into thicker watercolor paper would be great. Have you tried it with something like a photograph? Like if you wanted to make a portrait of someone or combine elements from different images into one?
I haven’t used it for a photograph but that sounds like a good idea!! I definitely am attached to my bigger light pad though or I use my iPad sometimes (especially when combining different images). The iPad makes it easier for my to see the final product and move things around if I need to!
I love their Artist Pens, have a review on them, and have always wanted to try out their light box. I have their alcohol markers, really enjoyed seeing you try out all these supplies. I have been wanting to check out Five Below recently.
Unsure if this has been said before, but there are two types of gouache, water and acrylic. I'm an acrylic paint and acrylic gouache kind of girl - watercolors scare me lol
I bought the gouache set bc i was curious if it was as good as himi and i figured 9f the paint sucked i coukd repurpose the palette. It now holds my Winsor and Newton Designers gouache and my Holbein gouache so not bad fir a $5 palette tbh
I liked the LED tracing light the best, but it's size is a bit of a deal breaker. If I can't lay at least an 8.5 x 11 sheet on it, I would probably have trouble using it effectively, unless I were just doing greeting cards. Does it have a brand name so I could try to find it in a larger size, second hand?
I've probably tried every art supply from 5Below that they carry. I love them all for the most part. I liked the oil pastels, the gouache was so-so, the markers are nice, use them all the time. The neutral markers are nice. I made a color guide since they don't match the colors too well. 5Below is repackaging their supplies, so if you've bought these things before, look before you purchase again. I have better supplies, but I am an absolute SUCKER for cheap art supplies.
Had to sub to ya. I like your vibe. Oh the gouache paint looks like the jelly gouache but looks like it acts more like watercolor from a tube. I love the fact that the fine liners were so cheap and didn’t bleed! ❤
I picked up the first pens you showed. I'm not an artist, but I love using them for scribbles. The markers are hit or miss. Though I also am not an artist and it works for what I need.
Not really an art supply necessarily but their neon gel pens did MILES for my detail work they are SO BOLD and as far as gel pens go the quality is s o g o o d. I tell everyone they should get them if they do traditional art and like using their white sakura gel pen for little details
i was just there and they have watercolor paper, and its thick. i dont know how good it is though, never tried it. i have a bunch of art paper i need to use first.
I just left 5below a few hours ago…I was in disbelief with the goache set and never heard anything about them so I didn’t get them….but yes I saw two separate sets of alcohol markers and the first set was soooo off with the colors I couldn’t make use so I passed. I then saw a brand ‘Azure’ at Walmart I’ve surprisingly never seen before or heard about, I’m interested in how those are since I couldn’t test them in store.
That's a fantastic haul for $30! The paint box looks like the Himi (?) box, I've seen so many videos (after I bought them*) of people having to rewet the paints a couple of months after opening, that the individual little lids come with the cheap paint and not the brand they're dupeing is 🤯, I'd imagine they're vital to stop them drying out. *To be fair I mostly bought it cos the box is flipping cute 🤭
@@mcthrifty_art_ I haven't actually tried them 🤭 I tend to hoard craft things until I'm incredibly bored. But there's 2 channels that do Studio Ghibli style paintings with them, that were very convincing 😆

I need these pastels for 5 dollars. I am here for gouache, I was hoping to through paints out and put my own gouache in but no, it isn't going to work. I bought light pad this weekend and tested on all my papers there are two problems: the linework should be very dark preferably with soft pencil or liner, and it doesn't work with Strathmore toned papers. But for watercolors 300 gsm works fine this is why I bought it. Just sick of transferring- I can't see what I am doing, can't control how much I press on paper this is important for watercolor you don't want to make indentations on paper, and I can use any led color I want with this pad- good stuff. I wish I spend the money and bought it years ago. Unfortunately, it is not going to work on colored pastel paper, you need to buy more powerful light pad.
The tiny led pad is great for smaller pieces, but I also would need to use a bigger and brighter tracing pad in general :) I also was going to repurpose the gouache container!
Gouache paint is definitely a different medium to work with. I would like to suggest you get 1 small tube from an actual paint store. This way you can compare both products equally. How can you honestly test a product and compare it for quality when you have never used it in your life? 🤔
I did purchase a few smaller tubes and the himi jelly gouache to play around with off camera (and watched other artists’ videos on gouache) but, the comparison is definitely something I could remember to include in future videos. Sometimes things slip my mind while filming/editing 🙂
@@mcthrifty_art_ I don't think they carry them anymore, I got my set years ago. They also used to have alcohol brush markers in grey and portrait tones but it's been like 2 years since I've seen those.

I think that cheap paints are way better for a starter artist than cheap paper. I kinda want that light box, lol.
I’m going to agree with you there! I’d rather have the good paper 📄
