This Coptic debacle is why you should be able to flip religion diplomatically. If you ally a country with a different religion and get a lot of favours, you should be able to request that they send clerics to your country, which then starts off an event chain that ends with you switching religion.

Ramparts can now only be placed on terrain which is seen as “Flatland” in the game. This means it is only possible to build ramparts on farmlands, grasslands, steppes, savannahs, drylands, (coastal) deserts and coastlines.
Note: we are aware that this change is a bit against the nature of what ramparts actually are. The reason behind this change is that mountains with ramparts can lead to oppressive situations where neither side wants to commit to an attack due to the threat which are -3 on rolls.
Guess that’s what I get for not checking final patch notes. They must not have gone this direction.

The mughals literaly started in Afghanistan since the people in Balkh were the only ones still loyal to the Timurids. There was no mughal conquest of Afghanistan. Also persians have traditionaly been one of the two dominant ethnicities in Afghanistan.
Otherwise, yes it was sometimes conquered, but generaly only by massive concessions and much struggle.
We don't know much about the Achaemenids but Bardiya, second son of Cyrus, was governor in Balkh.
Alexander maried a noblewoman from Balkh and let her father govern the region.
After that Afghanistan was never completely conquered by an outside force until the Ist century BC and even gained independence under a local greek dynasty centered on Balkh. Then Balkh came under the rule of Tocharians who set up their own kingdom there under unknown circumstances while the arsacids conquered Sistan in the south.
The Arsacids let the Surens rule over Sistan as largely autonomous vassals (the arsacid general at Carrhae was a Suren). At the end of the century the Surens gained independence until the IIIrd century.
The tocharians created an empire centered on Bagram which lasted until the IIIrd century.
The Sassanids conquered the region but let it be ruled by an autonomous king which ruled from Balkh until the IVth century when the huns the Sassanids had settled there rebelled and took Balkh. Sistan was at first autonomous but lost its status in the IVth century.
Several hunnic empires ruled the region until the IXth century. The Sassanids retook Balkh in the VIth century followed by the Arabs a century later but the huns at the time had their capital at Kabul and stayed independent, they were then overthrown by a hindu dynasty and the Kabul kingdom endured until the XIth century.
Balkh was thus the center of a sometimes independent, sometimes autonomous state that took many forms but lasted from the IIIrd century BC to the VIth century AD and then relocated to Kabul, closer to India where the huns were waging war. The Kabul state lasted until the XIth century.
A first muslim empire centered on Afghanistan was that of the Saffarids from the south which ruled shortly over most of Iran in the IXth century, then they ruled Sistan, making it into an autonomous state that lasted until the XVIth century.
The Ghaznavids established themselves in southern Afganistan and created another empire that ruled most of Iran and northeast India and which put an end to the Kabul state.
They were then overthrown by the Shansabani who conquered all of northern India but were defeated by the Khwarezmshahs. Most of Afghanistan was still under Shansabani rule when the mongols arrived, the Shansabani ruled the region as an autonomous vassal of the Ilkhans and gained independence in the XIVth century.
Timur founded his empire in Balkh and overthrew the Shansabani, the Timurids would then rule the region until the XVIIIth century. Parts of western Afghanistan would be under Uzbek and then iranian rule, in the XVIIIth century pashtuns in these regions rebeled and briefly took over Iran before being defeated by Nader Shah.
Nader Shah defeated the Timurids and took over the region by allying with the Durranis. At his death the Durrani became independent and thus modern Afghanistan was born.
So a second long lasting state (that we can call Khurassani after the province) lasted from the Xth to the XVIIIth century mostly as an independent state but sometimes as an autonomous vassal.
This is to say Afghanistan is indeed the "graveyard of empires" people who look at some maps to say the contrary are generaly not aware of the political realities in Iran where recognizing some sort of central power often didn't mean a complete loss of independence. In Afghanistan (and historicaly in other iranian mountain countries like Tabaristan, Kurdistan or Luristan) power is gained through negociation. A foreign power can earn safe passage and a cut on tax routes by negociating with mountain clans. Any attempt to exerce a more brutal form of power nearly always failed in the long run. Be it Alexander with Roxana, the Arsacids with the Surens, the Sassanids with the Kushanshahs, the mongols with the Shansabani or Nader Shah with the Durranis, an empire that wanted dominion over the Khyber pass always had to get the afghans to its side.
The british, russians and americans thought they could exert power in Afghanistan through their own civilized method of shooting at anything with brown skin while discarding the decadent and barbarous oriental practice of talking with eachother and negociating. They lost.

If you ever want to make it totally miserable for people to siege your forts you need in fact 4 idea groups
    innovative, quantity, defensive, and infrastructure.
Putting all that together you get like 60% fort defense, 2 or 3 hostile attrition base and almost 100% garrison size bonus, in the end of the game that means the enemy needs 53 units on a lvl 8 fort to even make progress. Put that on a mountain fort, with all the attrition bonuses and the fact that supply doesnt go higher than 40 in most provinces, it's great. the enemy just drains manpower so fast. Pick a nation that gets another 20% garrison size and that goes up to 56 units. If I'm remembering right, that is. The numbers might be slightly different and it's not effective until the second tier of forts, but it is very funny I promise.
