LG V30 Review: The Best Video Phone (With One Big Exception)

  • LG didn’t do itself any favors by waiting until October to release its V30 smartphone in the US, after first announcing it back in August. But it’s telling that, in the intervening weeks, I haven’t been able to go a day without someone on Twitter asking for an ETA on my LG V30 review. This is a smartphone that’s got people stoked.
Part of that is the natural demand for an underdog alternative to Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8, or curiosity about how much of the V30’s DNA made it into the LG-made Google Pixel 2 XL. But comparing the V30 to either of those competitors misses the point. The V30 isn’t just LG’s higher-end model for the fall; it’s one of the only three smartphones in recent memory designed specifically for shooting near-professional-quality mobile video. (The other two were its immediate predecessors, the LG V10 and V20.)
The V30 packs updates to the styling and specs of its forerunners, while tossing in more cinematography features like in-camera color grading and support for the Cine-Log format. It also brings its own version of the super-wide-angle dual-camera system that kept the LG G6 in my pocket for much of this year, and includes a 32-bit Hi-Fi DAC and 3.5mm headphone jack for the audiophiles in the audience. But with a price point starting at $800 and a selfie camera that falls far behind the quality of the primary shooter, will the LG V30 be able to live up to the hype created by its long road to release? Check out MrMobile’s LG V30 review to find out, and then hit up Android Central's LG V30 Review for the deep dive!

Shawn Orjiakor - Damn 3.5 is slowly fading into the night... Nasty part is that the existing digital codecs aren't refined enough to fully duplicate and therefore completely replace the high-quality analog sound you still can get with a good pair of standard wired headphone cans or buds, but that is where the manufacturers are going, regardless... There's even talk now of Samsung, especially after the acquisition of Harman-Kardon/AKG early in 2017 - possibly ditching the jack as early as the Note 9... Ready or not, 3.5's are going to be a thing of the past soon!

Hey y'all! Lots I wasn't able to cover in this review due to timing, etc. BUT if you have followup V30 questions that I didn't get to in the video, reply to this comment! I'll be hanging out for about an hour after upload and I'll answer what questions I can.
EDIT: Hey that was fun! Will duck back in as I can but thanks for all the questions. Also: weird how RUclips can't figure out something as simple as threaded replies, innit?

Dan Gage - The LG V30 should've taken a page from the HTC 10's book and provided at least an OIS selfie - especially for a cinematographer / video enthusiast inspired device that the V30 is... Hell, HTC should've carried that over on their own U11!

Dan Gage - True, but to obtain an "Everything Under the Sun" handset nowadays, with all angles covered - might run you as much as $1500, I fear... Asking prices are getting ridiculous for "primos" as it is!

Honestly I think that the LG V30 is one of the best Android phones, if not the best. I used the Note 8 for awhile, but it is pretty heavy and the battery never got me through a whole day. The LG V30 battery keeps on surprising me as it's holding out through the day with incredible Screen on time. The video that this phone can do is amazing. One thing you didn't mention was the Haptic feedback and how good it is!

    • @TheMrMobile

Nice review. Got my V30 2 weeks ago, upgraded from HTC 10 due to an unfortunate drop. I'm happy with the V30 so far but did notice the shutter lag when shooting in RAW. I'm glad I'm not the only one, I didn't read much about camera app performance on other reviews.

Vincent Cardona is the screen as dreadful as they say? Is it that bad under low light? I'd prefer to wait for an Anandtech review, but that could be out maybe even next year...

    • @vinnieti
      @vinnieti 6 лет назад +1

Robert Markoš The screen does have the drawbacks that have been documented in other reviews. Viewing angles are poor when it comes to white balance. And shadows do lose detail in low light. However I watch a lot of media on my device and I still enjoy it, All things considered I think it's a nice-looking screen. Not a deal-breaker for me.

    • @Krystalmyth
      @Krystalmyth 6 лет назад +1

Vincent Cardona How is it getting used to a single speaker? I have a HTC 10 as well. And I worry it'd be hard to go back at this point. Having sound coming toward you from left and right feels proper to my ears. Is it manageable? Is it louder than the 10 at least? That's something this phone just isn't.

...With iPhone, HTC, all iterations of the Moto Z/Z2, Essential, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, and now (snicker) the Pixel 2/2XL all ditching the 3.5, the V30 now goes unchallenged with the dedicated DAC/headphone amp audiophile candy...There is still the ZTE Axon 7 and that one Marshall Amp branded handset to contend with, but with both those units, I hear that some music creation, music player, and music/video streaming apps default to the integrated DAC within the SoC, whereas the V30 has all the angles covered, with everything you want all going to and coming from out of the jack... The LG-made POLED display has a few issues (Hopefully, there will be a software update that remedies that), the selfie cam could've used a little improvement for such a video-inspired device, (Like you said - Also, admit it...I can clearly see that you got a bit spoiled with the OIS on the HTC 10's selfie - "cough, cough!"), and thanks to Zack's (JerryRig) durability vid, the fingerprint scanner on the V30 may not work if scratched up too much (Use of a good rugged case that puts a little height between the scanner and whatever surface the handset sits upon will fix that as well)... Overall though, I'd say the V30 is still the power user's choice for all that it can do...

Improve the front camera (8 mp)
Add the google pixels portrait magic
Make the wide camera 16 mp f 1.6 with ois
      Add more cinevideo filters
      Add an ir blaster
      Presto it's perfect

It's still a great phone in mid 2018! Got it few weeks ago and couldn't be happier. The only drawback I've found on this phone is a front camera which is not terrible but a noticable step back from competitors. Of course, you can use your back camera for selfies, since you kinda see yourself on the back glass but that's compromising. Other than that, it's brilliant, definitely recommended for everyone that like taking photos and listening music a lot on their phone.

My last phone was the iPhone 7 Plus, which I pretty much started hating right as I was outside of the return policy for my carrier. I finally was able to upgrade, and the V30 is what I chose. It's been a night and day difference. The rear cameras are incredible, the video mode is by far the best I've used on a phone. Overall I'm incredibly happy with my decision. Oh, and the HiFi Quad DAC definitely makes this produce better sound over headphones than ANY phone I've ever used.

After reading the Verge's review and many others having issues with the greyscale on the phone I am relieved to see that my V30 does not have the banding issues present. It feels better in the hand than a note 8. I think I'm going to enjoy the phone.

It's fine *to me.* People who say the display should be better on an $800 phone have a legitimate point. But personally speaking, I can't detect many problems, and the one I can see (off-axis blue shift when tilting) I don't find a big enough deal to make a huge fuss over. YMMV.

I agree that the floating bar is pretty useless with the phone unlocked, but the always on display has the buttons available to press as well. Just because your V30 didn't have a bad screen, doesn't mean the issue doesn't exist. There's enough proof around that it is a real issue, if its fixed with the new batches then great. I am so much happier with this camera than my previous Xperia Z, HTC Desire Eye, HTC 10 or Xperia Z5 Premium. The internal software is right on the button. The hardware could've been better but as I said, I am still happy.
I also don't mind the LG skin either. It's less contrived than the Samsung but more unique than stock without pushing to far.
The screen even at 1080p is actually better than my Xperia Z5 Premium at 4K... Contrast, clarity and brightness.

The Photo and video features are pretty cool, but I have to ask myself, that if I'm really that into photos and videos, where I want a bunch of wide angle shots, or do more complex video grading, or focus effects, etc... I'd just bring a MIC like the amazing Sony full frames or even the excellent Sony a6000, or one of the many wonderful M43 cameras and get an excellent compact lens. I mean you'll have massively more options, better quality, better features, etc... and the right package really can be quite compact. I mean my Sony A7 with the EF 35m F2.8 is quite compact and I could easily bring along another small prime or two (or bring along a compact zoom lens).
Not that it's bad to have such features, but if you're into it enough to really want those features you probably already have a setup that is pretty mobile if you want to.
Great review though... I think the audio is the more compelling feature.

I've bought G6 last week and I gotta say that camera's amazing. The wide angle feature makes almost any outdoor scene look more epic. You can't instantly take profile pics like with iPhone or Oneplus 5 but it's definitely worth it in the long run.
And with Nova Launcher the UI experience is smooth like a butter while being close to stock. The display's amazing for LCD and the battery is pretty ok so far. I don't understand why more manufacturers don't make phones with wide angle cameras.
The only downside is the front camera but I'm not a selfie guy so it's a worthy sacrifice.
V30 is definitely worth it, though I personally would wait for a price drop. I got G6 for 460€ (tax included) with 40€ cashback so that makes it almost half the price of V30.

One of my favorite things on this compared to the Verizon V10 I upgraded from is the theme support. The high contrast theme and dark wallpapers are great for the OLED screen. LG's launcher is horrible so I use the Microsoft Launcher and Pixel icon pack to get rid of the cartoonish squircles. And the settings menu with tabs can be made normal with a tap of the three dots menu.
