First: 290 horsepower out of a naturally aspirated 302 Windsor is enormous, especially in 1969.
Second: That 290 listed is heavily under-rated. It is actually much higher. Consider that this engine has garbage cast iron log manifolds.
Aside from that, yeah, squishy boat suspensions are actually great for handling. Nobody believes it, but it's true. If those tires break loose, it's the engine's fault. It's called mechanical grip, boys and girls.

1. The 302 was used in everything from luxury sedans to small trucks. There are MANY different versions of it, with power ranging anywhere from 150 to 300+ horsepower. Even as low as 80 if you look immediately after emissions regulations hit.
2. The 302 is not a towing engine, nor is it particularly big for a V8. The 351 is the bare minimum. The 460 is what you want.
3. Virtually every vehicle from this time period used a ladder frame. Saying that makes them the same is like saying every food that has wheat in it is a sandwich.
4. Even if you were right: Ford won Le Mans using a glorified truck engine. Twice.
