The GPS Rescue crash is caused by a known bug in BF 4.4.0. It is fixed in 4.4.1. I confirmed that the Flywoo CLI dump for 4.4.0 should work fine on 4.4.1, so you should upgrade to 4.4.1 not 4.4.0.
I had the exact same thing happen with my Chimera 7. Tried it twice. Disarmed at 10-15 feet above the ground twice. Thankfully the grass offered a good cushion for the fall so nothing broke. I'll try out BF 4.4.1.
Another cool thing about this little drone is if you attatch the arm braces on with tri props and something like a 720mAh GNB battery you can definately use it for freestyle and the light weight means you hit the ground with less force, meaning it can survive a surprising amount of abuse for something designed as a lightweight LR cruiser :) You can also run 1500mAh 4s GNB lipos for a solid 12-15min flight times. Your punch-out will be affected, of course, but that can be a good thing when learning- not to rely on 'left stick go brrr' to fix your mistakes 😅

I still fly the OG explorer, I pre-ordered it the minute I saw dave_c announce it, with the caddx tarsier V2. Only thing I've changed is the vtx, for a rushfpv tank mini (800mw). Your review of it Joshua, was and is the single best FPV related video there is. They happiness that came through when you were just flying around was really awesome. And it's not a freestyle quad at all, but with a 650 4s, I still get around 6 minutes of flowstyle through the trees, or in a parking lot. With a 1100 4slipo, I get around 15 or so of cruising around the intercoastal. I keep telling myself I'm going to post all the footage I have...but when I do have time, I'd rather be fishing, flying, or hanging with my lady, the pup and our baby.
Been eyeing this quad for a while, but went with the Emax BabyHawk 3.5” O3. So glad I did. Plenty of power and been bashing the snot out of it. Holding up great. If cruising, I’m getting 9min of flight time with 850 battery. BabyHawk for the win, awesome sub 250g drone!! The BabyHawk will do it all.
I have tested GPS RTH extensively on my channel and in Betaflight 4.4.0 it does disarm too high in the air and could as in your case result in a broken quad. Betaflight 4.4.1 has added a few lines of code that appear to have this sorted. Bucking when returning can be smoothed out with settings.
I have an older(v2 I think) analog Explorer LR and IMO an 850mah lipo is the sweet spot for performance/range/flight time. I can get about 12 minutes which for the speed it flies at is good enough to get about 2.5-3 miles out and back with some room to push it if you want. It also stays light enough to do some acrobatic cruising if you want which makes it a really fun flier for a big park. I should mention this is flying with a Caddx Peanut on board too. I have a couple of the 3000mah li-ion packs for it, but they have been moved to fixed wing duty where they work much better.
Got one and like it. Going to add a compass so it can run inav. Betaflight getting better for long range but the artificial horizon is all over the place.
I have (2) of these Flywoo Pro V3 chips. I routinely get an 8+ lock in under 2 minutes. The most sats I ever got was 27(!). I really dig these new chips. Just make sure you include Galileo in BF.
Ok, so think I might have been one of the ones who said that I have gotten 12 sats inside(near a window) almost instantly. One difference in my build is that I had it up front, no where near the O3 unit. It was a micro and I didn’t even use the provided foil tape. As far as settings, I have found that setting my “STAGE 1” settings correctly. #1 the aux channel with angle mode in the range so that it’s activated, and then #2 the throttle to say 1300-1400(a little higher than hover throttle, to pop it up out of trouble). For such a heavy battery you might want to adjust. Same thing for throttle in stage 2 RTH. Make sure that the hover is higher if running heavier batteries is going to be the norm. Adjusting these GPS parameters are very important for a smooth RTH. I’m not sure about it disarming in mid air lol. It might have something to do with the hover throttle minimum needing to be higher. Ground speed adjustments is also helpful to get it back faster. With these few parameters adjusted I have had very good results with GPS RTH in 4.4. It has saved me a couple of times already. One thing that I did notice is that the quad that I had the GPS antenna mounted on the back like that, acquiring sats did also take a bit longer. Hopefully YOU learned something today(so satisfying to say that to you of all people😉)
I got the analog version a couple of weeks ago and am loving it. I also bought the frame kit for $35 and now have a full set of spares if I break anything or I could use it to build a second LR4 with components of my own choosing. I also purchased a baro/mag board for $10 which should allow the addition of a compass and a path to loading up iNAV on this 4 inch beast lol. Edit: also forgot to mention that all the stl files for the various TPU mounts, guards and other bits are freely available so you can print your own set in whatever color you desire.
Got mine last week and it came with a ND filter 4 already mounted on the O3 camera. Not sure if it's standard or I got lucky and someone forgot to remove it after testing the quad before shipping. Good to know that the 4.4 CLI should work on 4.4.1. I had one instance on 4.4 where the RTH direction was weird and the quad was flying sideways trying to get back home. I usually never let it land by itself.
8:59 isn’t there a CLI command that can be used to disable the beeper? say for example that you know you only fly around a small park or your backyard .. there’s no point in having that beeper active. Just a thought - thanks for your review.
Quick question.. Did you ever land and reset the home point (which includes the launch alt) after getting sats? I didn't see the fly time reset (indicating disarm/re-arm) which suggests it set the home position somewhere in the sky..
Love the Explorer with O3, had mine for about 4 months now and it’s been fantastic. I like to run a GNB 4S 1000 mah HV LiPo most of the time but get good flight times out of 4S 850s as well. When I want to be in the air a long time I use a 4S 300mah li ion pack, 20 minutes later I still have battery left!
10:20 I mean, you're flying around while the GNSS is still trying to lock. I'm surprised it even did. For the next time, let it sit for a few minutes before flying, the lock will be much faster for the subsequent power cycles of the GNSS.
Hi Joshua, at the time of filming and or the test flight the sun had spewed out a large CME. It was in the “ severe” category. This causes problems with GPS lock among other things. Perhaps try again and you may see more satellites lock in. Love ur videos! Keep up the good work.
I have the Explorer LR 4 V2.2 (ELRS), I usually let the drone chill for about a minute before taking off. Majority of the time, this is more than enough time to get 6-9 satellites. Easily my favorite Flywoo drone
16:29 Just because it had a lock at the home location doesn't mean the position was accurate. Be aware of foliage cover, you're right next to tall trees here. Foliage cover, houses or other stuff blocking and reflecting GNSS signals lead to multi pathing and multi pathing leads to an inaccurate position. Source, am a land surveyor I use RTK GNSS stuff for the living.
When discussing the quality of the footage we saw versus GoPro at 18:16, this video seems to only include DVR from the Goggles 2 or Integra. I think some on-board SD footage would have been more appropriate for that comparison.
I've got the jumper T-Pro and flywoo Explorer 03 ,is there a way to set a switch on the transmitter to act as a photo capture button? also a button to allow access for camera settings?
I love the explorer, not sure if I want to go 03 or not. Maybe I should rewatch the vid, I missed the actual flight time verdict. Was there a weight measurement?
@@JoshuaBardwell i did a quick search for deadcat fpv from 2013 and a bunch of videos came up. this one here says deadcat frame in the info below. i had to make sure i wasn't going crazy lol ruclips.net/video/jKrlenqu8Tg/видео.html
I think I got pretty lucky. I am flying a 5" with BN220 GPS and it locks up to 14 sats or more, often. It does take around 3 or 4 minutes to lock onto 6 sats on cold start but hot start it's like 5 or 10s. I also tested the RTH with no problems at all, but I didn't let it auto land, I re assumed control when it was arriving back at home point (BF 4.4.0)
I bought this a couple months ago as my first ever quad. Its been great to learn on and I've crashed it a lot and haven't broke anything. I bought the Li-on too but never use it because I find an 850 LiPo is way more fun to fly and I get almost 10 minutes on them anyways. I've been attempting some beginner freestyle and been crashing a lot, whether thats me or the quad idk😂. Looking to upgrade to a 5" freestyle quad soon!
Bro, sorry but freestyle and what this quad is actually capable of doing are two different things. Please help yourself enjoy this great hobby of FPV by getting a "real" quad that is actually capable of flying freestyle. It'd be impossible to learn freestyle with a quad that handled like this and has so little acceleration and cornering ability. I suggest you buy any quad of almost any size that doesn't have the letters LR in it's name. A 3 or 3.5" will still keep you under 250g, but perform on a completely different level. 😎🤘
@@KOrnhOliO1 I don't think that's necessarily true. With a Lipo this quad is quite capable of some basic freestyle for someone new to fpv and it is nice to have less power to make throttle control easier and crashes less punishing. I have quite a few hours on a sim with more powerful quads and am about to start building a 5" freestyle quad but the explorer was a great first quad for me.
@@KOrnhOliO1 well scooter britches your dead wrong. This can definitely do light acro and allows a beginner to get the coordination necessary to advance on to a 5”
Hi. Try that default settings for RTH on Flywoo LR4 HD set gps_rescue_throttle_p = 15 set gps_rescue_throttle_i = 15 set gps_rescue_throttle_d = 20 set gps_rescue_velocity_p = 8 set gps_rescue_velocity_i = 40 set gps_rescue_velocity_d = 12 set gps_rescue_yaw_p = 20 I had problem with premature disarming in the air with the different values and in CLI dump are diferent numbers than those.
Hey Joshua great video as always, I'm now thinking I need a quad like this on my fleet!😅 I got a question for you, how worth do you think it is to get the goggles V2 right now, since we kinda know they're dropping support because they won't work with the mavics 3? I'm asking because I got a crazy good deal on some gear and I now have the HDO3 walksnail goggles, and I'm loving them, but you know they are as fast as a snail when it comes to updates and I can't stop wondering if they'll ever make something to compete with the o3, and so I was thinking of selling my analog goggles and try to get a pair of DJI goggles V2 to do analog for the quads that are still running analog and to test the o3. Do you think that's worth it or I shouldn't even bother to do so?
@@JoshuaBardwell could you please verify that 4.4.1 actually does fix this issue? I'm very skeptical on the GPS rescue mode .... Please help out ... Thanks.
I was hell bent to get one of these with the O3, however the lack of availability of DJI goggles etc here in Thailand and crazy cost sent me to the Foxwhoop analog instead. I'm having insane RX issues with it however if I had got the explorer 100% would have broken arms by now.
In my experience the biggest factor in how many sats you get is the position on the quad. Cheap or expensive it's mostly the same. I really don't know why manufacturers put them under the vtx antenna and power cables, they create so much interference. Better GPS modules will get more sats eventually, but stick a cheap BN220 on the arm or above the vtx antenna and power cables and you'll get 15-20 sats very quickly, instead of struggling to get 6 on the ground. Honestly it baffles me as to why BNF companies keep making this mistake, and then people think the GPS is the issue.
I *never* launch an o3 quad without an nd / uv filter on. I've already scratched two filters, and I'm so much happier scratching a $13 filter than $100 lens lol. Absolute necessity. Agreed that the 03 is especially suited for these lightweight, non-professional quads. Being able to add no weight while cruising around and getting decent enough footage for my personal use is wonderful.
My 5 inch Five33 Switchback has the insides even tighter and I still always get 25-30 sats with a bn-220 which makes me think that how close the components are doesn’t really affect the performance of the GPS.
Lol. I remember watching the deadcat video. I had no idea that's where the term came from. It (the frame) just looked to me like a decent rendition of how a dead cat would look if lying on it's back. I love cats for the record. I feel really pathetic for having to add that, as I don't really give a shit what anyone thinks. End of the day....you got the quad back, camera, FC, motors, VTX!, etc.......arm replacement $10
Had mine for a couple of weeks now and loving it. Came with an ND8 installed which was a nice surprise. Upgraded to 4.4.1 with the CLI for 4.4 straight away and have had no issues. I also have the V2 Vista version and can confirm the GPS on the new o3 version is definitely a lot quicker and better. I have had a strange turning dive and the repeated braking when testing RTH, nice to know it's not just me I guess! But I will try adjusting RTH throttle and speed settings to compensate for heavy li-ions as suggested in another comment here. Mine managed to land smoothly about 2 feet from where it took off. Think I'll be installing my arm braces to be safe after watching this - I've had a few knocks and tumbles but no breaks yet!
I've been interested in this as an entry to fpv. I want long range to take cinematic video. However I'm struggling with the cost since once you factor in googles and controllers and everything it is essentially the price of the Avata, which seems to be a much more refined package overall?
@@Paulwhittingham I mean 1 - 1.5km when I say long range. I don't want to be trapped within a few hundred. I thought the Avata was capable of those distances
I've had mine for a few weeks now and it's very fun to fly, on a 4s 1050 lipo pack the time is about 10 minutes of smooth flight. It's worth putting on those arm reinforcements, in my case they helped when I fell into the bushes after losing my vision 😁😁.
What’s your opinion now that dji google 2 is compatible with dji mini 3 pro. It can fly way longer than any fpv long range drone. I do not own any drone been watching your channel for long time. I am on the fence to buy dji drone mini 3 pro with Google or go with fpv drone.
Thanks for all the great vids. I'm trying to get into this hobby and learn more about how to build, but I think I want to buy this one first. I do have some flight experience, but I was wondering if anyone knows if this drone has an option for altitude hold?
Do you think the updates made on these for the v2 Analog version make it worth getting since the Chimera4 is no longer available and the Baby Croc does not come in ELRS?
Would be great to see what image stabilization can do to reduce those wobbles you had. Doesn't this quad with the long range battery weigh about 350 grams? How's that make it a sub 250 long range quad? I wish there was such a thing that could do at least 20 minutes that you can buy in RTF format.
GPS signal processing is all done on the GPS module. What goes through the wire is just digital communication at pretty low speeds. It either works or doesn't. I don't see how shielding would improve anything.
I wonder if that radiomaster controller you have there is compatible with Frsky XM+ receiver protocol. Or it can work with Frsky R-XSR receiver as well. Just wondering from a knowledge perspective though 😎
Received the quad several months ago. The RTH performed weirdly from BF 4.3.x to 4.4.1 (btw, the BF firmware target name was changed from 4.3 to 4.4). The link quality of the O3 unit & goggles 2 with original antennas actually is not as good as the air unit & goggles v2 with lumenier antennas. Love this quad, however there are some thoughts here. If long rang is the priority, 7 inch would be better (for this one, liion battery pack is required for long range, then the weight must be higher than 250g); if sub 250 is more important, some stronger frames would be better.
@@JoshuaBardwell Ah ok thanks. I was trying to figure out if 03 does actually support audio. Saw your video and got a little confused at first. I'm using 03 air unit wit v2 googles. One issue is overheating in FCC mode when going above 2.7k at 100 fps on flights. You should make a video about overheating topic. I'm sure I'm not the only one getting into this problem. I ordered a heatsink which I'm going to try and Install to see how much it will improve. But so far I had tested two sticky back heat sinks on each side of air unit simultaneously with a tiny 40mm fan over it. It stayed cool on a bench indefinitely.
@@JoshuaBardwell Hi Joshua, hopefully you don't mind one more quick question: How did you attach the rip sticks onto the DJI Controller? I'd imagine you need some kind of stick adapter, no?
Wow allmost 13 miles thats as far as i would want to go,im curious how far analog can go as long as you stay in line of sight even after it goes out of sight keep it high well at 400 ft
I've been looking for exactly this, but I'm balking over the $500 price tag. My little single battery cruzer was $150, so that's a jump + new goggles...
For this size and weight its weird that they did not put the nano version of their m10 gps. It can run on 3.3v and it's amazing. I've never seen 30sats on such a small gps. And i can plug a type c to type c to my phone, run speedybee app and see my satellites numbers without a battery, and once I get the amount of satellites that i want, i plug the battery, go to odd and reboot the FC (to re enable msp) and fly, you can also remove the USB and it only takes like 10 sec to get all the satellites back. Also you if you have an aio, you don't overheat the video transmitter, and in some cases the Esc. The nank gps is a game changer since it's smaller and it means less TPU usage for 3d printed parts, so you save like 2-5grams of weight, for a light weight quad, it's a lot.
@Joshua Bardwell thanks!! And last question... What do u thing about these (TrueRC 5.8GHz X²-AIR Mk2 Combo for DJI FPV)? Will they give me massive improvement? (I am using dji fpv drone)
Can you please recommend me, from your flight experience, a Lipo ION "6S", long range battery, or more flight time? Is for my Iflght Nazgul Evoque F2 Deadcat HD v2 (DJI 03 AIR UNIT) 6S, drone. Thanks in advance.

I love the explorer, not sure if I want to go 03 or not.
Maybe I should rewatch the vid, I missed the actual flight time verdict. Was there a weight measurement?
WHERE can I get that T shirt though? 😍
I half tempted to get this since I already have the DJI Controller 2 with my DJI FPV drone
pretty sure the tbs disco came out before that cat video. i could be wrong though.
But nobody called it dead cat then.
@@JoshuaBardwell maybe not everyone but i sure did. i remember looking up how to tune a dead cat frame back in 2013. Cheers.
Yes the button is hard to press at first. It'll wear and ease with use
This can definitely do light acro and allows a beginner to get the coordination necessary to advance on to a 5”
@@KOrnhOliO1 besides dipshit he already bought it months ago. Ya parade raining mofo
Especially with the smaller batteries
Geprc tern lr40 vs the flywoo explorer? Which one should I get and why? Thanks for your great content!
Crazy putting a 4 cell li-on on that little thing
The beeper button is actually pretty easy to press for me. Just need to make sure you hold it down for about 3 seconds
You’re the man bro
I hit the button of the beeper with the XT30 connector of the battery that I just unplug
Hi. Try that default settings for RTH on Flywoo LR4 HD
set gps_rescue_throttle_p = 15
set gps_rescue_throttle_i = 15
set gps_rescue_throttle_d = 20
set gps_rescue_velocity_p = 8
set gps_rescue_velocity_i = 40
set gps_rescue_velocity_d = 12
set gps_rescue_yaw_p = 20
I had problem with premature disarming in the air with the different values and in CLI dump are diferent numbers than those.
So, we have seen analog and both dji versions. Walksnail version next?
Hey Joshua great video as always, I'm now thinking I need a quad like this on my fleet!😅
I got a question for you, how worth do you think it is to get the goggles V2 right now, since we kinda know they're dropping support because they won't work with the mavics 3? I'm asking because I got a crazy good deal on some gear and I now have the HDO3 walksnail goggles, and I'm loving them, but you know they are as fast as a snail when it comes to updates and I can't stop wondering if they'll ever make something to compete with the o3, and so I was thinking of selling my analog goggles and try to get a pair of DJI goggles V2 to do analog for the quads that are still running analog and to test the o3. Do you think that's worth it or I shouldn't even bother to do so?
Had the V1 and it fell out the sky with that same LI-ION on it from about 25 meters.
Never broke an arm.. weird yours did.
Ive seen the dead cat drone and its arms are definitely true X
Very nice review Jay, Why it was disarming in mid air? I have the same issue, not sure what to do ...
It's a known GPS bug in 4.4.0 which is fixed in 4.4.1.
How cinematic is this? Does it get good footage compared to a 7 inch?
You won't be doing any long range with Avata. The Lr4 with 03 is an excellent starter drone imo
@@Paulwhittingham I mean 1 - 1.5km when I say long range. I don't want to be trapped within a few hundred. I thought the Avata was capable of those distances
Does rocksteady or Gyroflow work well with this model?
I've had mine for a few weeks now and it's very fun to fly, on a 4s 1050 lipo pack the time is about 10 minutes of smooth flight. It's worth putting on those arm reinforcements, in my case they helped when I fell into the bushes after losing my vision 😁😁.
Who's going to help Joshua stand his wooden gates back up?
That must have been a hell of a wind storm.
Im confused you said that that it is offered with a flysky option ? But i thought rxsr was an frsky not flysky ? Please clarify ? Thanks
Yeaahh...
DeadCat definition has been dramatically explained by Mr.Bardwell. thank you Sir ☺️🤭
This drone does not do altitude hold.
is this the default DJI OSD?
Do you think the updates made on these for the v2 Analog version make it worth getting since the Chimera4 is no longer available and the Baby Croc does not come in ELRS?
Is the entire frame 3D printed?
Would be great to see what image stabilization can do to reduce those wobbles you had.
Doesn't this quad with the long range battery weigh about 350 grams?
How's that make it a sub 250 long range quad?
I wish there was such a thing that could do at least 20 minutes that you can buy in RTF format.
GPS signal processing is all done on the GPS module. What goes through the wire is just digital communication at pretty low speeds. It either works or doesn't. I don't see how shielding would improve anything.
The wires act as antennas and pick up electrical interference which affects the receiver.
Can u bind this little baby with a Rc from Dji mini 2 ? Model RC 231
I wonder if that radiomaster controller you have there is compatible with Frsky XM+ receiver protocol. Or it can work with Frsky R-XSR receiver as well.
Just wondering from a knowledge perspective though 😎
The 4 in 1 and cc2500 modules can bind to FrSky yes. But not the elrs.
How did you record sound off the drone? On 03 air unit? Seems like you did the recording straight off the drone.
You're hearing recording from the mic that I'm wearing, that's rrecording my voice.
It stayed cool on a bench indefinitely.
will Goggles V2 work?
Instabuy for me. What are the thumbsticks you have on the DJI Controller 2?
533 ripsticks.
@@JoshuaBardwell Cheers
@@JoshuaBardwell Hi Joshua, hopefully you don't mind one more quick question: How did you attach the rip sticks onto the DJI Controller? I'd imagine you need some kind of stick adapter, no?
What's the "Goggles compass interference" warning?
Wow allmost 13 miles thats as far as i would want to go,im curious how far analog can go as long as you stay in line of sight even after it goes out of sight keep it high well at 400 ft
I need those GPS coords so I can show up at your pad in my underpants with a bottle of Jack when there's a full moon
I know where he lives! Bring me the bottle of Jack and I’ll tell you! 😂
@@jeffatkins8103 lol Tennessee here we come, yeeeehaw!
Can the 03 air unit be used with the goggles 2 without connecting the fly app to the goggles?
If I buy ELRS version, do I still able use my DJI RC2 for this drone?
I've been looking for exactly this, but I'm balking over the $500 price tag. My little single battery cruzer was $150, so that's a jump + new goggles...
My GEPRC M8U gets 12+ sats even in my brick house, very impressive. Compared to my BN-220, iFlight M8Q which basically sit idle doing nothing. Lol.
Same problem with my TBS M8
I was freaking out trying to figure out how to stop mine from beeping.😅 you have to hold the button for 3 seconds
Hello all, how would you choose between Avata 2 and this one ?
Get a ViFly Buzzer that you can "plug-unplug" to reset without that damn button 👍
Hello, I am new at fpv. I am wondering if my dji fpv controller would have same range as third party radios. Thanks 😊
It will have range to match the DJI FPV video system, but not as much range as the longest-range 3rd party radios.
@Joshua Bardwell thanks!! And last question... What do u thing about these (TrueRC 5.8GHz X²-AIR Mk2 Combo for DJI FPV)? Will they give me massive improvement? (I am using dji fpv drone)
I don't think they will give massive improvement. They will give a little improvement though.
6:55 I totally forgot about that! Around the era when drones first trended massively
Hi whats the difference to a dji mini 3 pro? Can it stream the live video to a phone or controller? I dont want to use goggles.
The drop out of the air happened to me too at around 2m height, as i tested the RTH with my chimera 7 V2. And it broke one arm too :(
Can you please recommend me, from your flight experience, a Lipo ION "6S", long range battery, or more flight time?
Is for my Iflght Nazgul Evoque F2 Deadcat HD v2 (DJI 03 AIR UNIT) 6S, drone.
Thanks in advance.
