    I paint in acrylics and up until recently I had only done still life's and landscapes. My friends and family all found it strange that I don't do animals because I'm a life long animal lover even working hands on in the animal industry for many years. My sister finally got me to agree to paint her dog. After watching countless videos on painting fur, and feeling like giving up, I found yours. Your tutorial was very well explained and demonstrated, without being intimidating or overwhelming. I had the "lightbulb" moment, and I FINALLY, was able to produce a painting that I felt good about. Thank you so much!!

    For a black and white border collie, would you use black or would you mix colors to get a deeper black? Also: do you treat the white areas as the darker areas, i.e., in three tones or just mid and light? Thanks a lot!

    • @DanielleTrudeauStudios
      @DanielleTrudeauStudios  5 лет назад

      I have a tendency to avoid black paint entirely for the most part, even when painting actual black fur. In some cases when I do use black, it’s mixed in heavily with other colours (usually burnt umber, Prussian blue and manganese violet). If the fur is looking more brown than black in the later steps, I’ll go in with a glaze and black paint to darken it up.
      I typically use the “three tones” philosophy for all fur, you just have to adjust the ratio of each. White fur will have less of the darkest tone, and dark fur will have less of the lightest tone.
      Hope that helps!

  • @27DragonsBlood

    When you glaze, are you going over wet oil paint or are you letting it sit some before glazing? I usually mix linseed oil into my paints so I was curious.

      aloha Danielle,
      Thank you for responding to me so quickly. I do a lot of dog portraits, especially to help earn money for our Humane Society. I didn't know about a ridge brush, our local art store is not very well stocked. So, the early stages if the hair i can see you probably could use about any kind of brush, but it seems like the ridge brush would be invaluable for the later layers. I remember watching your video, that you relied heavily on Liquin, which i also like very much. I'm going to have to watch your video carefully several more times.

    Hi Danielle. I have a question re glazing. If that dries faster than the layers underneath, will that not cause an issue? I’m thinking fat over lean or does the glazing medium act as the “fat?”

    • @DanielleTrudeauStudios
      @DanielleTrudeauStudios  6 лет назад +1

      Good question! In this case, the glazing medium acts largely as the fat in the equation. I personally don’t have much experience with glazing over thick impasto layers, but if I did I would ensure that the layer is mostly dry to ensure that there aren’t any adverse effects.

    • @DanielleTrudeauStudios

      You totally could! As long as you work with acrylics first and then oils, it should work just fine. Although there are mediums that work with acrylics that allow you to glaze as well
