My understanding…and it is rarely alluded to…albeit cold comfort…is that every “free solo” route has been already “free climbed” many times by by the free soloist to the point that virtually every toe and finger hold has been rehearsed and mentally prepared for to the greatest extent possible. It is a triumph of focus and preparation.
I feel like the “live to climb another day” is somewhat rock, as there is a lot of risk in free climbing. I’ve known people who have died or gottten seriously injured in sketchy falls fire climbing, good vid that gets the point across, though
With Sport, above 2nd/3rd clip a ground fall is very unlikely. Maybe an overhang on a slab route possible. Trad can be a little sketch at times but that is factored in and you are often a lot more careful over those sections. Climbing is actually very safe (when following proper safety guidelines). The larger risk to climbers is actually a pulley injury from crimping too hard.

You live to climb another day if your pro holds. If what you are climbing is vertical. There are many places where a fall of twice the distance from your last pro + rope stretch, would have you smacking ledges. Then there’s the chance your piece doesn’t hold. Like when you are showing a weighted cam holding your body weight, that’s not showing shit. It depends on the placement and then proper use of sling and doesn’t take into account the pieces potentially “walking” as you move above the piece. Then how its weighted in dynamic fall.

The rope doesn't actually assist in the climb. The rope is just there to catch you if you fall. I.e you are climbing free from any aids. Free solo is without any protection/aid whatsoever. You can have other people there in a free solo but they wouldn't be there to belay etc like a free climb and may also be climbing solo with or just on standby for whatever reason.

One of the appeals of free soloing is the fact that the only thing that can protect you from falling is your own ability. Also carrying a parachute only protects you if you are above a certain height above the ground. Carrying a pack with a parachute also hinders your ability to climb.
There are only a very limited amount of climbs that would help. You’d have to be atleast 800 feet up on a completely vertical wall. That’s a misconception. Even climbs like El Cap have ledges or pillars that project outwards. It’s rare to be somewhere where you’d fall straight to the ground without bouncing off of ledges. In the same way you could fall, hit your head and even if your protection holds you can die.
