Having had several ankle sprains in my life, watching Elvis's feet in this makes me grit my teeth -- what a great song
I noticed the same thing. Lol
Holy double-jointed ankles, Batman!
I can imagine 😅
I'm 😔😐 slightly pigeon 🐦 toed.. hahahaha!!
I was just about to comment about his funky ankles. I was reminded of how great this song was when it was played in the background of an AFV montage.
My dad never used to want to put his stress and worry on his kids, so he never let on when his job got him down or bills were hard to pay. Instead he would play this song at full blast and dance through, singing at the top of his lungs till me and him both had huge smiles on our faces. I didn’t know this till years later, and to this day I still play this when I need to de-stress
Some Dad's are awesome like that, just great for you and your family.
That's a great story, thanks for sharing it.
Your dad is my hero. I love that story.
I could not love this more.
Dad of the decade.
I'll never forget my mother in 1978 saying, "What's wrong with him?"
😂 ditto my dad
😂😂😂
lol
the answer someone named him elvis
LOL! You just made me spit out my beer while taking a drink.
This song was mixed so well. Each instrument just at the right level. EC's voice nice and clear. The drums sound killer. There's so much "space" in this mix.
Check out the review by the Produce Like a Pro channel. The actual drummer from this song gives a demo!
It was a 'revelation' to this old hippy, at the time...I had thought that good (popular) music had been stomped to death by disco...
Recorded on FOUR tracks at Pathway studios (same studio Dire Straits used to record their demos). The studio is long gone now.
Great song!! But how does he do that with his feet?? My ankles hurt just watching it!
More cowbell!
Elvis Costello, The Jam, The Specials, Madness and the list goes on. The late seventies and early eighties was a wonderful time to be an angry young man.
And woman
You Forgot The CLASH and Sex Pistols!! Speaking of ANGRY YOUNG MEN!! GREAT POINT Harvey!!
Are you the Harvey Smith from Fern Gore?
Well said, well said indeed.
Amen to that !
Damn, no wonder I thought "Brutal" one one of the best songs off Olivia's album.
Ehh…for newer generations that were either born after or didn’t hear this song growing up, Olivia’s song is probably sick, but for people who heard this song all the time, on the radio, on MTV, in bowling alleys, at the mall, wherever, to hear Olivia's version, it’s like…”Uhhh, is Elvis okay with this?”.
I don’t quite think Olivia understood just how popular that song used to be. She probably thought it was either not very well known or that it’s been long enough where people have forgotten it and that enough people had never heard it before so it would be okay to copy and no one would be the wiser. That was a mistake. She's just too young to realize that most people on this planet were alive long enough to hear this song.
She’s honestly luck af that Elvis Costello was kind enough not to sue the shit outta her, cuz other artists like Katy Perry have been successfully sued for millions for copying only a teeny 7 note section of another song let alone the entire thing. It really is just Elvis’ instrumentals with Olivias voice over it with maybe a few little changes but if we’re gonna be honest here, it’s the same song. Lucky girl.
@@mlscrow4817 You still don't get it do you. Read Costello's fucking answer ! That's how rock 'n roll works ! You don't sue each others ass for taking a broken peace and make it a brand new toy. Olivia's song is expect for that rift a completely other song.
I did not think of this song at all listening to Brutal the many times I listened to it. There are some similar notes, but with the amount of music around, that's inevitable. Also, after reading various articles about her album and sounding similar to other songs, where is the producer on all this-he plays guitar on the album.
@@calvinzhobbes THe other original part was ripped off from Selena Gomez. Get over it!
@Strawberry Orphan Iconic stealing skills.
I am 68. Still Rock to this song. . One of the best.
Elvis is brilliant and his music will be listened to in a 100 years from now- he's transcendent
It gets the volume knob for sure
I'm 67. Saw them live touring for...Imperial Bedroom??? Tightest live band ever. The Attractions were very special.
Elvis Presley had the hips, Elvis Costello had the . . . ankles?
Club penguin feet?
@@slshusker STOP IT THIS INSTANT🤣
Looked painful in the Pump it up video didn't it?
won't let my daughters watch this shit
The flat-out coolest nerd who ever performed.
Nah man that's David Byrne. Costello is cool though!
Yes, I agree, the coolest need.
@@cophaters2000 agreed!
He was a computer programmer in a previous life.
@@alanstrom2221 Oh Rubbish, he was a computer operator......means he did a bit of imputing. He is a couple of years older than me. Hardly ANYONE was a computer programmer in the 70s. It was an extremely rare job. Back then, computers were huge banks of machines of reel to reel magnetic tape, with the operators basically just standing there and changing the tapes every now and then.
I used "computers" back in the 70s........basically you used a terminal input, all hooked up to the central "Computer" in the city somewhere. They were often unreliable.
It's beauty
It's grace
It's Elvis Costello twisting his ankles for 3 mins straight
I wouldn't try it.
Why the hell is he twisting his ankles? Lol
@@BeatlesFan1975 Probably as a tribute to THE Elvis. Of course, the song is about abusing another part of your anatomy.
I was stuck in a salon once for 6 hours and this song was on repeat 50 times in a row. I’ll never forget that day.
Lol...
Yeah but coulda been the frog song by Wings... ...you'd have run through the glass door!
at least it was a good song, no?
Damn! You must have been pumped up about it!
@@gardenlover9663 lol you got a chuckle on that one!
60yr old metalhead and this is still one of my favorite tunes ever. Great band.
Pump it up!
You and me both, brother. The man rocks the sh!t out of whatever he does.
63 and still rockin
47 Yr old funk head and this is also one of my favourite tunes. What a classic
I'm the same
...and his ankles never recovered.. =)
LOL
Hahahaha 😂🤘
Just read this comment as I spy a vid on the side about Jack Wilshere. Coincidence?
ha! good one!
lol messed up but funny.
One of the most infectious beats of any rock tune..evah!
When I first heard this song I thought of INXS...okgo and strokes. All great in the wake of Elvis.
It's spelled "ever".
Yeah man !!
Malcolm vs krelboynes!!!
Agree 100%
No gimmicks yust great music ❤
My ankles now hurt... my ears feel great!
That bass line is ridiculously awesome.
8/20/2023 @ @vikinglord7545 On most, if not all songs in which the bassist in Elvis's group in this video that he plays on have cool bass work, though not all as punchy as Pump It Up.
Also: Joe Jackson's bassist plays "awesome" punchy bass lines as well.
Yes, first thing I noticed. Costello's band is not a footnote; very underrated in all ways.
Note the massive bandage on the bassist’s hand, he had sustained a severe cut to his hand a few days earlier
Awesome, still love it nearly 60 now
Same as me xx
Another classic
61 years old and yeah, this is on my favourites section. I can remember when it was released and it still holds up 💪💪
Everyone's all "omg he's standing on his ankles" and I'm over here like "holy shit is the bassist playing with a broken hand?".
Holy moly, I have watched this at least 75 times and never noticed that.
Haha yeah I read they were drinking at a bar the night before and got into some mishap and hurt his hand. Used to know the story but have forgotten it over the years.
I noticed that too - crazy.
I never noticed that either. Thanks for noticing. Love the glasses.
Apparently no one here ever saw Freddie Garrity (Freddie and the Dreamers) from about 15 years before. In addition to stealing Elvis's name, Costello flat out stole Garrity's moves.
The bassline in the chorus is one of the all time greats....
Well it has been sampled by at least 2 songs since its release
Voodoo Child by Rogue Traders
Brutal by Olivia Rodrigo
Cannot be disputed 👍
Agree
Damn Straight !
That bassline is sick af as the kids say
That bass line...
Bruce bass
They told me Olivia Rodrigo sampled this song and now I am addicted to this
Yesssss
funny because I didn’t know this until I heard this song at the gym and I was like omg it sounds like brutal !!!
Costello admitted 'sampling' Pump it Up from Dylan's Homesick Subterranean Blues who 'sampled it' from Chuck Berry's Too Much Monkey Business. Music is always being recycled, eh?
Well she did .
Not that complicated riff , what is the fuss about it . Every group copies others , it’s safe and unoriginal to do it . And reflects how bad music is now . No talent
Costello was so ahead of his time, incredible!
@@randythomastheinsecures5404 Bullshit. It was the time of new wave music.
Costello is my math teacher
Or life isn't that much different through the ages ?? 🙂
@@wendypope37 no but he was ahead of his time pfff
@@rgm2659 Not a real postpunker, but a mix of punk and pub rock melted together. And a genius, of course!
my wife when dating asked me if I liked Costello. I said ; yeah.. I think they are pretty funny. I really like Abbot. years later she said it was almost our last date. But , her dad told her I was a keeper. I was so stupidly and innocently naïve then. my boss after college asked me what I thought about W2k . I paused in fear , then realized he was not talking about the lubrication jelly. I sure miss my girl. RIP.
sorry for your loss my man
The bass is awesome. I've seen this song instantly get a whole crowd to swarm up on the dance floor. We took a vote and we're doing this song in our band. Looking forward to it!
The Vox Continental
Ball Room Blitz by Sweet!
Also a Dance Floor Swarming song!
My band practiced it last night for the first time. I play bass, so I get the tough part 😢 What a grove 👍
Anyone notice the bass player has a cast on his pick hand 🧐
I was a teenager when this came out. I liked it then but it wasn't until like a week ago that it hit me with just how powerful it was. Dude sticks the shit out of that bass line
ruclips.net/video/_sUHFRbb9W8/видео.html
I was in my teens
Loved it as a kid of the 1980s. Loved it in the frisbee scene in ‘P.C.U.’ [1993].
A good song belongs to every era.
If I remember right this track didn't chart that well when it was released in the UK. Now it's probably classed as his best single.
@@michaelchristian5089Veronica is probably the best charting song. Not bad either. But this one is so unique... timeless really... and clever
Damn, this is so "kick ass" even after more than forty years since its release. Why can't music of today be like this music? Elvis is a musical icon and genius.
Paul McCartney speaking very highly of him and collaborating with him says it all. I was lucky enough to see him live in the late 70s. Alison is one of the greatest songs ever and I can't think of one from Elvis that I would call second rate.
@@johnvender I didn't appreciate him at the time as a teenager listening to different music but, the guy's brilliant and you can't help but move and sing, haha. One of the legends.
It takes 20-30 years for the cream to rise to the top.
listen to 'brutal' by olivia rodrigo hahahahah
Ok, boomer
Awesome. Just getting into Costello now. Happy days. His vocal on the verse really reminds me of Dylan's subterranean homesick blues... anyone else?
Yeah he's said that he copied that song and Dylan said he liked it.
Pump it up until you can feel it
Pump it up till your ankles are bleeding
This dude was so far ahead of his time
no doubt
Reminds me of OK GO, betting he influenced them a good amount
How far ahead was he?

Bassist definitely the musician in the band

Dean Smith Where did I imply that the bass player wrote the bass riff?
I just re-discovered this song. I used to roughhouse with my dad to this song when I was a child. Whenever he would be taking care of my sister and I while my mom was running errands he'd put this song on the stereo and all of us would just spaz out. We'd pillow fight, wrestle, tickle torture, and chase each other throughout the house. Those were the simplest, yet funnest times of my life. My dad is gone now, and although I've been depressed ever since his death I can't help but have the biggest smile on my face hearing this song and have those memories rushing back to me after so many years.
Fantastic comment pal. I wish you well.
I lost my dear dad last week age 97, this is putting me in a happy place. Best wishes to you.
nice story marra
Music does that. It takes a shortcut and goes straight for the heart.
Bruce and Pete Thomas kiilling that rhythm.
thanks Elvis for defending Olivia and not being brutal and sour about it. 😊
i see what you did there
Its not even Olivia's fault. She only writes and sings her songs. It's all her producer fault. He should be fired asap 🐩
@les rete invest in hearing aids
@les fede the riff is identical
Thanks Olivia, I knew I got deja vu listening to this song. It’s more of an homage. Olivia is not being a traitor to Mr. Costello.
This still bangs after so many years. Telltale signs of a true classic.
Seems like modern artists like it enough to rip it off
ruclips.net/video/_sUHFRbb9W8/видео.html
Will never age, well not in my lifetime :)
I'm 8 years old again. 😍
Pump it up until you can feel it …pump it up when you don’t really need it don’t really need it
I'm surprised he didn't break an ankle or at least sprain it with those moves
Mr Costello, you need to,,, Learn something!!
He was a trained Ballet dancer....Twisty Ankles, No problem!!
Looks like Jerry Lewis' moves!.
What about the other band members? They're making the same moves as well. Except for the drummer but he probably snapped it kicking that bass drum.
Those moves are excellent man , surprised don’t see more influence
He's Gumby, dammit!
Still sounds great after 40 years! In fact sounds better.
I'd say more like 43 years later, now.
It calls a classic record
Can your comment get anymore right?? This song just kicks A$$!!!!
So guys a great beat and I love his buddy Holly glasses.
Excellent lyrics- intelligent - the song shows up a lot of today's trite offerings. Music & lyrics are also extremely addictive. I have to confess I am fascinated by the keyboard player's jacket, but I keep thinking its from the 60s & evocative of the Beatles somehow
Thanks Olivia Rodrigo for leading me to this song!
I thought she sampled this song! So did 'Rogue Traders - Voodoo Child'
That Vox organ sound is awesome.
I saw Elvis Costello in Edmonton Alberta in the fall of 1978. Backed up by The Battered Wives.
This is the best song he ever recorded.
Allison 😊
Beyond Belief
I find it funny that alot of people are getting mad at Olivia Rodrigo for using a similar guitar riff on Pump It Up for Brutal even though Elvis Costello himself had no issues with her using that riff and explained it's just part of making rock music. God bless Elvis Costello. Also, Olivia doesn't make the beats of the song. She just writes the lyrics and sing it and a producer makes the beats for her.
One of those songs that if it comes on the radio when you are driving you are doing 30 when it starts and 80 by the time it ends
America had Presley, but England had Costello!
Totally 💃
Killer bass line
I’m 67 it still pumps me up!! Great song
Does it for me at 70 😅
if you like this you might like my brothers music. his name is stu morris....
This song is about wanking!
This song still packs an awesome punch. Love it!
I love that jazzmaster. Beautiful guitar
Released in 1978. Still holds up - such a great song!
I dislocated my knees trying to imitate this style of dance
Costello's absolute KA-CHING SONG !!!
This song is pure genius!
He's the spitting image of his father. Go Elvis!!! Philadelphia USA
Who's here after Elvis defended Olivia rodrigo's similar "Brutal" chords !
This is why I am here. I read what Elvis Costello had to say, so I started with Chuck Berry's Too Much Monkey Business, then Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues, then this, then I am on to Brutal to compare. Pretty fascinating really.
he's the best
Funnily enough I just heard "Brutal" yesterday and I *knew* I'd heard that chord progression somewhere, then it hit me.
Just goes to show there's nothing really *new* in music it's just rearranged and updated for a new generation.
@@Knightveil :D Heck I always thought it was from Doctor Who!
A punk with class.
There is absolutely no excess in this song. Every beat, every bump, every note and every yelp has just enough space to kick you in just the right place.
What would be called the ‘drop’ in music today sits here around 1:20, where they just hit a note, let it ring undisturbed, and then…………………..
HEY!
Brilliant.
One of my favs. Never can be still when ever time I hear it. Just makes you feel good.
Hello, how are you doing it's nice meeting you here.
Manager: Break A Leg Out There!
Costello: SAY NO MORE!
Awesome song 🇬🇧 From a time when great songs came along thick & fast❤
Thanks Elvis. This was a song in my youth when i was young. I remember biting on a sherbert dipper and watching football on channel 8 with my brothers. one of them ended up being a horse surgeon. I wish I had focused more on the intent of this song when i had a deflated dinghy
1.20 is the moment God made the world.
Perfect example of being far better than what's required.
one of the funkiest bass grooves ever
The guy who sang R Whites Lemonade you brought your son Elvis up so well...such classic music, who could possibly tire of this song
I love the way he dances with his feet 😊. Classic song!
Are we supposed to dance with our hands then?

That's about the only time I can...
A great track from my youth that I still love to blast out when I'm driving in the car by myself. Fantastic.
Atemporal!
B.H. presente!
Everytime I hear this song I get ALL PUMPED UP. Another good, classic hit which I enjoy listening to. This song is full of energy.
I love these types of songs that are straight up about having a good time and the stomping music and lyrics delivery encapsulate the spirit of it. Absolutely wonderful.
He's actually making fun of people with that attitude. ;-)
I certainly know this song well but I don't think I ever saw this video. Good Lord, what a ton of youthful energy from Elvis and the Attractions. Great stuff.
"God.. it's brutal out here."
Elvis Costello= KING OF COOL!!!!!! LONG LIVE THE 80'S MAN!!!!!!!
Never tire of hearing this song, gets the heart started!
Wow!!! This reminds me of why I have always dug Elvis Costello's dynamic style!!! Rock on forever, EC!!!
Pure, simple, great rock and roll. What else is there to say?
It's actually a biting and ascerbic look at the the excesses of s3x and drugs of the rock and roll era and how he saw some of that continuing even in what was supposed to be a "new wave." He's making fun of all that in a satirical and ironic way. So, it's a little bit more than simple. ;-)
Genius by a real musician. London in the 70s, nothing will beat that.
Pure gold! was listening to this when my friends were doing disco, this saved my life. And I'm from the U.S.
I finally looked up the lyrics as I’m sitting here listening to this… F’ing brilliant
Such a great song it's hard to tell what's the best thing about it, but it might be the bass.
As a great shiney headed black man once said, no doubt about it!
This is the best thumping bass I have heard for a long time.
The bassline is ridiculous and makes it 10x more fun
Top 10 bass line of all time?
You are wrong. Sorry know better
I'd definitely put it in the top 20. It's hella fun to play.
Certainly more going on than first appears

All i have to say is i like this song one of my favourites from this band this song it's got rhythm for white brother's
