“I learned a rudiment. Now what do I do with it?”
Juan Mendoza’s book Rudiment Creativity answers that question - and then some - by introducing 11 methods for adapting each rudiment to the drum set in a creative way. Anyone can play this stuff, not just seasoned drummers.
In this game-changing video lesson, you’ll learn what those 11 methods are and how rudiments can be applied to grooves. Juan recommends starting with just one of the methods (get outside your comfort zone and choose one you wouldn’t normally think of) and exploring rudiments in a non-traditional sense.

The Methods
1. Splitting hands
Instead of treating a rudiment pattern as a one surface exercise, split it between two surfaces (ie. snare and tom). Try with both right and left hand lead.
2. Moving the right hand
While playing the same pattern, start moving the right hand around the toms to create more textures.
3. Moving the left hand
You can keep moving the right hand around while you start moving the left around, or keep the right hand steady and move the left between the hi-hat and the snare.
4. Sweeping inward & outward
Create melodies by sweeping inward (letting the sound sources come toward the body) or sweeping outward (moving away from the body). Try this with a double stroke roll. In this video, Juan swings the doubles.
5. Subdivision adjustment
Give the pattern a different flavor. Play an 11 stroke roll (organized around a sextuplet) and breaking it up around the kit with different accents.
6. Substitution
Substitute one limb for a different one. Try playing a paradiddle diddle where you sub the left hand for the bass drum.
7. Displacement
Instead of always starting on the downbeat, put the ‘one’ on a partial or any subdivision.
8. Use the rudiment as an ostinato
Play paradiddles and put an accent on the downbeats. Use it in a groove context and get creative.
9. Adding accents
With that same paradiddle pattern, you can move the accounts around to the e, the and, the a, and so on. Paradiddles don’t have to sound mechanical; you can make them groove!
10. Moving the accents
Add accents to a double stroke roll. Move them around. Try combining them with sweeping in and out.
11. Changing the time signature
Let’s say you’d normally play a paradiddle with 16th notes in 4/4 or 6/8. Try playing it in 7/8, letting it drift over the bar line. This is a great way to train your ear so when you’re soloing or playing something tricky you can understand how everything falls into place.

Playing calmed and relaxed. Letting the mics do their job. I've been trying to apply that to my drumming. You feel so much better after a session. A+++
Yeah I'm all about efficiency. Why work harder if we don't have to :)
He is the best drum teacher in youtube, ive seen so many tutorial my self, but this guy is so detailed that you will learn everything he teach, and he’s a beast in this category.
Thanks for checking out my youtube channel. Really means a lot to me and glad you got something out of the channel. Cheers!
My favorite part... " So you CAN play it as 16th notes, or 16th note triplets , but you're going to play it as 32nd notes and you're going to displace it."
HAHAHA. Yeah you have no idea how much of a Savage Jared is haahhaa. He's a funny dude for sure!
I see Juan Carlito Mendoza, I click.
You can tell he’s actually really good at teaching drums rather than just playing
Thank you so much. Really means a lot to me because my lifetime goal is to be a quality player and instructor. Have an amazing day!
Juan Carlito Mendoza yea i can agree youre an amazing teacher, but dude you have some amazing skills man! 🔥🔥🔥
@@JuanCarlitoMendoza my favorite drummer!
You still have to be really good at playing drums to win a 🎸 center drum off.
@@JuanCarlitoMendoza Are you Christian? I love René Gonzalez.
Currently practising and I'm really focused, this lesson truly galvanized me, thank you Juan Mendoza, eres el mejor
I'm just finishing this Drumeo video and wanted to say how impressed I am by your humility Juan. Totally unbragadocious (is that really a word?) and someone I could easily befriend. I'm a young drummer (at 69 y.o.) and just bought my 2nd electronic kit. I am so excited about learning to be a drummer. So many things in this presentation impressed me that I could sing praises of it at great length. For the producers, however, the audio cuts between drumming examples and Juan's explanations were quite bad, making it difficult to hear both, but you probably already noticed that. Anyway, one of the most impressive was at the end when Juan said, "there's always something to learn in music." I started as a percussionist in grade 3, transitioning to guitar around age 12, but never losing my urge to beat the heck out of something without hurting it. I will never stop learning, nor playing if I can help it. Thanks for making sure the lamp of learning stays lit Juan.
I’m glad this guy is on here. Very fast paced lesson, good for advanced drummers. Some people on here dumb things down and I get that it’s incredible useful information, but this guy actually challenges me and I love it.
Awesome glad you were challenged! Cheers!
So relaxed and smooth as always
I love his lesson. It really changed my drumming within one week.
Juan is a great instructor, he has a way with explaining the beats and putting them together in a way that I can remember, excellent teacher.
I really enjoyed this drum lesson. Thanks to everyone at Drumeo for creating such great content and thanks to all of the drummers who come and give lessons.
I bought Juan Carlito Mendoza's book while watching. Can't wait to get it and start working through it.
How NOT to love this guy? Incredible drummer, up there with the Weckl's and Chambers', creative and groovy, yet so humble. Amazing lesson.
Honored to even be mentioned in that circle. Thank you so much and have an amazing day!
Lifelong inspiration!!!! May you never tire Juan!! God bless your anointing cuz that’s what it is!!🙏🏼
I've said it before and will continue to say it- Drumeo's audio engineering is top notch. The drums always sound perfect. Well done
I definitely have to come back to this lesson in the future to flesh out and understand everything cause damn... 21:10 just blew my mind. Just, great lesson

So nice to hear a drummer playing for the song. Relaxed, purpose serving, skilled musicianship, and he shines when he has the opportunity. 'Nuff said.

Yeah man I love that song too! I HAD to play it for this session. Lots of fun to play!
Great to see Juan on Drumeo. Been following him for years. His independence is just bar none.
Thanks for following me on my journey!
Man... me love the sound of the snare here... tight... comprehensive vid👍👍
Man, I didn't expect to hear a René González´ song here in this channel. ahhaah
so much perfection.
Mucho sabor y sazón para un solo vídeo 🔥💪🏾
As a new drummer it can be a struggle to find new ideas in the hope of keeping that drive to want to practice. It is so easy to become disillusioned, even lost in a sea of exercises, some leaving you frustrated. It's the creativity that drives us. When you switch it off the desire diminishes. I am back for a second look at this introduction to using the rudiments creatively. Carlito has presented the mother load, something resonates loud, very loud. The creative juices flow with this undeniably brilliant creative approach in applying the rudiments in a new and exciting way. A big thank you to Juan "Carlito" Mendoza and Drumeo.
love you Juan this lesson was very helpful and without them my rudiments applied to the kit was terrible and now it is great and has improved my playing 10000%
Juan Carlito, nos has llevado a un viaje en el tiempo 25 años atrás con este arreglo! Wow ! Gracias por primero poner el evangelio al frente con este clásico de René! Gloria a Dios por tu vida!
Fantastic lesson, great concept - really powerful but practical and musical at the same time. Thanks for the examples (really complicated) - they demonstrate how far you can go with it. Sometimes it's so hard to avoid same old single stroke fills and get your head working in a creative way. This concept is universal remedy.
Glad you dug it!
Very very useful method. Thanks Juan. Thanks Drumeo.
Nice and really creative rudiments you had good beats and timing was amazing thanks for helping me with these tips
Fantastic indeed! He is incredible.
Very brilliantly creative with the rudiments!
Amazing as always Carlos!
Thank you brother! See you soon!
I swear this gentleman is putting drum teachers outta business. Every vid I've seen of his is pure gold 🥇
I love your feel honesty I play a lot of that stuff but not as organized should I say or able to explain like you do where your an instructor and just polished so much I love it Your blessed to have drums as ur daily routine to be able to do what you do and teach it You are an inspiration to me for sure would learn a lot from you Bless you
This is pure gold!
Wow.. just so complete. Great job Juan!
I love your methodologies I wish I had this incite when I first started playing. I played percussion and drums for 24 years and walked away to broaden my horizons with other skills and opportunities. There is so much available now online and offline. Juan you have inspired me to get back into drumming and I have purchased a new electric Roland kit to get me started. Not professionally this time, this time is just for fun, play what I want to play. Thanks so much Juan and Drumeo I look forward to learning more than I have before.
Cheers :}
Very creative!!! and good energy on teaching and enthusiastic explanation, love this and make's me to move to the practice cabine:)) thank's for all the good vibe's guy's!!!

What a great lesson thank you
That solo and last song..OMG🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
It’s always cool when my students start realizing the importance of rudiments in their playing.
Absolutely!
Maybe I haven’t watched enough of the video but when would dead stick ab double dead sticks be utilized. When I do you tune searches on utilizing dead stick......nothing.
Incredible talent with some real advanced chops...combination of Weckl/Vinnie and Horacio/Robbie Ameen...plus a great teacher 😀
I've learnt so much from Carlito Mendoza!
Most grateful sir
This guy is kinda crazy at drums. When I look at him it’s like “How the hell he’s doing these things?”

Hey Juan. Big fan! What kit is this you’re playing here? I’m in the market for a new kit and this one sounds heavenly! Thx God bless!
He is Puerto Rican, we Puerto Ricans got "skills", good musicians, boxers, baseball players, and actors, just saying, lol. Love your "chops" Juan. I got you on my list of my favorite drummers, just so you know i got Neal Peart, Stewart Copeland, and Jeff Porcaro on that list, no pressure, lol. Dios te bendiga.

That very first inverted flam tap is straight out of 7empest. Gotta love when lessons apply to tool. "Calm before the torrent comes"
Thanks for teaching me. This I might be able to do. I will first have to learn the rudiment thing you do. I am so new at drumming.
Dont feel bad ive only been playin 1 yr as of last week.. Got alot of work to do lol
Hey Mark! Yeah just take your time. It's not a race. Play at your own speed/pace and slowly put the click up in small increments. Keep pushing!

Monstruoso
My kit playing improved greatly as I participated in dci. Why? Those rudiments matter! Thanks for an incredible lesson. Now go home and play some pattaflaflas around the kit!!
that was great
Thanks man!
That limb independence. Wow. Incredible.
Temazo de rené gonzalez!
As an off topic. Yesterday I just found out about those MEZE 99 Classic headphones made in Romania. And I see Jared is using them. They look so good with that walnut and gold on. Their top of the line is the Empyrean (with an innovative system, one of the best headphones out there, a handmade piece of art).
Juan, your kits sounds incredible! Can you tell me more about your tom tuning method? I just ordered your book.
Hey Adam! For me I experiment with the range as much as possible. Every drum is different so you have to see where the "sweet spot" is for the resonance. Once it starts choking out, I start loosening the lugs to find the most resonance. I also tune the bottom head tighter than the resonant side head in order to get maximize the resonance of the drum and get a pitch bend. Also, thank you so much for your support!
Me encanto la musica que usastes de rene gonzales nada es imposible Dios te bendiga mi hermano
woow i have learnt a lot here juan carlito mendoza creativity is key
Awesome dude. Have great day!
IMPRESSIVE! Semper FI
Great stuff. The first flam pattern reminds me of Steve Smith at PASIC 2017. He demonstrated the same thing split up on the toms.
Oh I have to check it out! Have a link I check out? Thanks!
@@JuanCarlitoMendoza This whole video is excellent. Around the 19:00 mark he starts splitting up the flam tap and flam accents on the drums. ruclips.net/video/xUIAWc8LFg0/видео.html
