- I've been asked time and time again for my thoughts and opinion on Pokémon Sword and Shield, and further more I feel like some people don't even use common sense when discussing this game, so here's my full take on it.

Seems to me that like SM, they're releasing this just for a quick buck and then going to release an improved (that should've been the original) game next year to make double the money when people who already bought the game want the better versions. Third versions are out the window, as seen with the lack of Pokemon Z (which was terribly shoehorned into Sun and Moon- not saying I didn't love the Zygarde subplot but it just had no place in Alola since it just was a Gen 6 thing; you ask me, they should've done like they did in Gen 3 and released Pokemon Z after ORAS), replaced by the "final versions" of the base games. Watch as Pokemon Dynasword and Dynashield (or whatever they decide to call them) puts in every Pokemon, or at least the popular ones like the starters and pseudo-legendaries. Watch as it has good graphics and animations. Watch as they make 120 dollars off of the people who bought these veritable betas and want the final version. As sad as it is, I think they've gone the way of other, non-Nintendo developers and, unlike the Zelda team or the Mario team, which actually makes quality games that they care about and put pride into, simply milk the Pokemon cow for as much money as they possibly can without any regards to how the fans think. Which is sad to see my childhood go that way, but I guess we got seven fantastic generations. I, for one, will be replaying my old games and sticking to Smogon, because- and this is the saddest part for me- I think the Galar Pokemon have a fantastic design. I think they did a great job with them. I don't dislike a single one, I think they're all creative and unique and well-done. But the game as a whole is poorly executed. There is so much wasted potential here- and that is by far the saddest part about this whole controversy.
That being said, I think it has blown WAY out of proportion. Like often on the internet, people have gotten way too upset about a children's game, and I think that is uncalled for and their terrible behavior makes the fans as a whole (like you said) look bad. Far as I'm concerned, I have my opinion, but if someone wants to play the game- have fun- enjoy- it looks like a great Pokemon adventure for what it is. Eventually, the declining sales of fans like me will show them that they've done wrong. But the death threats? Unacceptable.
So to those who are getting the game- HAVE A BLAST, and don't let the prior opinions of the toxic fandom ruin it for you. Enjoy everything they have, and, if you think something is lacking, well, I recommend you go back and play an earlier game to remind you of better times. That's what I'm doing.

I honestly fucking respect the directors of the movie for that decision. They saw the big outrage on the Internet and immediately said they will change it, cause they want all people to enjoy this movie and to create the best possible outcome of it. Huge probs to them! With that being said, GF could learn something from it...and they definitely should
This is different from sonic because sonic has been tanking since 06 and hasn't had a definitive game in a while that brings together both sides of their community with pokemon it's more along the lines of the developers who are rich just pushing out less and less each year to see how little effort they have to put in to get sales on their game. Sonic isn't as guilty of this as pokemon is despite imo sonic forces being rushed they still tried at least pokemon sw and sh had hella potential but instead they turned out looking like games from the early 2010's and I'm disappointed :/ honestly at this point I prefer the pokemon spinoffs like mystery dungeon or gale of darkness over the mainline at least those had some heart put into them. The saddest part of all of this is the fact that people are going to still buy the game and fill gamefreaks pockets despite the garbage they've presented us, and I can't even blame the fanbase pokemon is the most iconic game rn and probably will be until either gamefreak runs out of ways to milk it or the fanbase moves on...

Th story should have been so much better and longer. There was next to no character development aside from Hop, and even then, he got really boring half way through. rose and Bede should have had a lot of moments together. Rose essentially adopted Bede. Like come on. And Roses ambitions should have been fleshed out much more. I was so confused with him when he released Eternatus. Overall, iA really hated this game. I love Pokemon, but this was one of the worst games I have played.
I think the biggest thing that started a lot of the fighting is when an issue like the draw distance or the cut mons or reused animation was brought up they were met with “I don’t care I’m getting it anyway” and people felt like what they just said was completely ignored. No I understand but I still want the game just I don’t care and that came across as them just letting game freak do whatever and no one really wanted to come to an understanding (this is putting lying aside for a minute)
This game made me realize that these game are no longer for me. I want more out of an RPG experience, something that modern pokemon no longer offer me anymore.
I've branches out to other RPG series and have been having a great time with them. I will probably wait and see if the next game has anything of interest to me.
If not, I guess my 15 year journey with this series is over.

I had a similar journey this year. I was initially excited for the next game. I wanted to have a good fresh start and stand out, so I bred up a Venipede, Starly, Piplup, and Turtwig for my SwSh game I planned on as they were some of my favorite mons and felt fitting to take with me for this new journey. A couple months passed and I felt a "disturbance" the news of the cuts hadn't happened yet, but GF was strangely quiet for a new release. Then, it hit, I was very upset and worried, looking for the justifications of their removal for nothing to really see out of their claim. If anything, it made me realize that I want away from the community. It got so insanely toxic that I couldn't stand it. And when the leaks said that the Pokemon I had ready wouldn't be in, I felt an immense depression. I gave up with Pokemon, and wanted to move on from it. Battling on Showdown wasn't as fun with my mind thinking about SwSh and its Lost Potential and frustrating me, the series I used to escape from the yelling and fighting of parents, school, and the world had become the thing I ran away from, and that was what broke me.
I'm not too sure if people will get it, but the Emotional Attachment some people have with their Pokemon is extremely important to them. Me personally, my Empoleon from Pearl was one of my first to 100, and I remember escaping to Pearl while my parents were arguing and divorcing, but Pokemon was there to make me feel happy and to give me friends.
My long tangent is kinda gone nowhere, but it's just something on my chest ig, it really hurts to see what has happened this year to a franchise like Pokemon.

Nasser Alawadhi I would assume you meant “which,” but to clarify, the current phone game that has a superior story to this pokémon game (and most pokémon games that isn’t mystery dungeon) is Digimon ReArise. Characters despite being fairly generic stereotypes are fleshed out very well, the stakes are often personal and characters that seems to be one offs come back for assistances when the characters really need it. The progression is absolutely perfect in the main story; the Japanese already finished the story, but it’s halfway for the US and it’s still a gripping story with major payoffs especially with Herissmon digivolving. In this particular game (Pokémon Sword and Shield), the best you got is becoming the champion of the region and they didn’t even got that right as they have to shoehorn a “villain,” for you to defeat at the last second with so little buildup that it almost takes you out of the story. There’s potential for a decent story, but they have to have box legendaries involved somehow.

Oh sorry I didn't spell "which" right(I'm not a native english speaker), as for ReArise I will probably try it when the story is complete, the only problem is I'm not into mobile games, as for the story yeah sword and shield are Probably the worst in the series.
Nasser Alawadhi there’s more to it, but in the sense of spoilers I suggest playing the game or check out the wiki for the full story in text form. Heck it even has minor voice acting.

The thing i hate the most is that they aren't returning to do anything with 3DS, like they had recently come out with the new nintento 3DS and i wish they made one more game for 3DS
I just want to play platinum, heartgold, soulsilver, Black, White 1and 2.
I finished the entire game + "post game" content (if I can even call it that imo) in 22 hours and that's shamefully short for a $60 game.
The graphics overall were decent and it was a small step-up from the 3DS graphics , but it was again, re-used from Pokemon Let's Go. The technical "random pop-ups" were absolutely noticeable and I wish that was cleaned up, but it wasn't a major problem. An exclusion of VA was a major gripe for me since reading test from AI dialogue didn't give the characters their own personality and I think that was what was missing from this Pokemom game: Soul and Personality. You didn't feel, empathized, or relate to the NPCs in the game.
The Wild area, which was fun for the first three hours, started to become monotonous, bare-boned, and lackluster from what I imagined an "open area" would be. And don't get me started on how linear and short the "dungeons" were in the game
Gameplay-wise I'm on the same boat! Animations weren't as immersive as I thought it was going to be. On top of that, with Exp. Share being MANDATORY, Instead of OPTIONAL was the biggest let down for me. I enjoy capturing pokemon to fill my dex, but to even have ALL my pokemon gain exp at the same time for even capturing pokemon was a bit absurd. I became over leveled to the point of stomping through the gym leaders like Shoppers rampaging through Wal-Mart on Black Friday. Yes I could've CONSTANTLY, Swapped pokemon left and right to alleviate that problem, but once you already have a comfortable team that you can rely and trust, why change it?
And post-game was a short 2 hours....-_-
2/5 for me overall. Again, graphically, it was nice and pulled from Pokemon Let's go which is a small step-up from the 3DS, but for the game to be aesthetically pretty with no Soul and Personality in it made it a bland and forgettable experience for me.
PS: The Raid battles along with Dynamaxing didn't help with the interactive and immersive experience I was hoping for. I'm sure for most, it would be fun for 1-2 weeks, but I think the idea would wane after that.
@Scott Slater lmao no, I consider it horse shit. Since I'm getting more hours into other games like Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, and Persona. All which have NG+. Even fucking Red Dead Redemption 2, a third person shooter open world game has multiple save files and jam packed content you can play over and over again. Plus it has its own online exclusive content.
Face it man, Pokemon is dog shit in terms of quality single player replay value. if you like playing those games then admit you do, but don't go defending those fucking imbeciles who are inept and incompetent in designing a god damn game. This game was awful. My friend convinced me to buy it and I remember when I talked to him about the game after I finished it and the first thing he told me before I ranted was “Oh you don’t play the games for the story, you play it for the Pokémon!”
The thing is I personally always enjoy the story part of the game! Despite being a competitive player, I feel a story is what makes each of the games different from one another, and I honestly like it. But this game had NOTHING. The story was so rushed that it was a bore to play though. The villain wasn’t even a villain for longer then ten minutes! The only character I liked (Bede) wasn’t given the backstory he deserved, despite the fact that they had everything set up for it. Hop clearly had a interesting concept being created, and yet they reduced him to “annoying side character” when they could’ve done so much more (especially for moments like when the main character was basically stealing his dream away from him.)
Overall the game could’ve been made so much better, even for the casual player. Because some do actually enjoy the story, and it seems like those people were screwed over because of game freaks problems.

Exactly what I think. Game FrEAk can't sacrifice this creative franchise for a quick buck. There's too much too lose, we already lost national Dex, what next, the ability to run?

The last time I bought a new Pokémon game on day one was Pokémon moon.
I'm not gonna pretend i know what you're feeling since I'm not that big of a fan, but after playing few pokemon games I have become somewhat invested in the franchise. I believe in a good product and people should not buy bad product and let developer/manufacturers get away with selling bad product with whatever reason, because at the end of the day you'll end up with a bad product and lesser money and a hole in your heart for buying a bad product that you need to fill by buying next gen lesser bad product and the cycle continues. That's why I'm with this guy, not spending your money on a bad product is the only way. I guess my message is don't be a fan boy, spend your hard earned cash wisely, set yourself a standard and if a product doesn't meet your standard have a gut to say no!
They literally could've said "Hey, we can't currently include all of the Pokemon because of space limitations. After launch we will be releasing a FREE update that will have the Pokemon not in the game right off the bat." But now=. Pay us 30 for the other Pokemon :)

I agree with you on a bunch of your points. The national dex being cut is really dumb, and the game is rushed for sure. They should have never said the game was going to come out this year and spent more time on it. I think the question you ask a bunch "why?" has answers, but it may not be the developers fault. The developers may have wanted the game to come out later but the higher ups with the money may have forced them to release it early. Delaying it would hurt sales for sure.
With that being said, the game seems rushed for sure, and not having a national dex is insulting. I haven't played a pokemon game since X and Y. I have Sun but never played it. X and Y was pretty awful in my opinion. Way too easy, not many new pokemon, unmemorable region, that was the start of the decline for pokemon in my opinion.

The problem now'er days with game freak is they release way too many regions in a single decade, like 4? Really?
IMO the game is missing a lot of features and honestly felt like a beta test and was really quick and easy. It'd be nice to see free updates to the game which add more Pokemon, moves, megas, etc as well as a multi and supers battle towers. Also they should probably allow a second save file where you can replay the game with a longer, harder story, because honestly it was way too easy etc if you play the current game. After finishing the second save file you should be able to throw across Pokemon. Also increasing the map size too would be an interesting idea because the map is super tiny. Like, compared to previous games it is S M A L L and has almost nothing in it.
I know what you might be thinking "But we have a game and that'd be expensive and etc etc why not a DLC?" Ok. Sun and Moon had a long, nice story, with a big map, (IMO a really good, complex story, I liked it), and the whole game was $60. Sword and Shield has a tiny ashketchup map and a really really short story with almost nothing post-game. There's a quest apparently but I haven't done it and apparently it's not great. Sword and Shield cost $80 and don't hold a candle nowhere near even Sun and Moon, which apparently was a lower-tier'ed game; especially considering size and story. So yeah. I don't think we'd have to pay. I mean, after all the entire game felt like a beta test espeically those t r e e s.

But yeah regardless of anything more updates are definitely needed for graphical improvements and hopefully Pokemon and moves; and almost definitely megas and z-moves. (Just do what you did with Rayquaza, Gamefreak. No Mega and Z-Moving at the same time, no Mega, Z-Move and Dynamax at the same time. Anyways, Dynamax is more like a glorified unglorified Z-move).

It began with the E3 and then all other things came. And I just said: NO, FUCK YOU GAMEFREAK, FUCK YOU NINTENDO, JUST NO. I didn't get the game and I'm glad I decided like this.

The people who harassed the developers and sent death threats are terrible.
I was deciding to wether to buy it or no, but this review helped me. I am not buying, I rate be save my money and wait until they make a good that can be up to the standard of Nintendo having a better console. This is just awful, even the dynamax or whatever it’s called, why didn’t they do a super ability that each Pokémon had ? Oh no but they want to make huge Pokémon with the same style being re-used 😕 just awful.
I would have preferred not to have a wild area and instead have the routes be like the wild area which would have made the game longer and give a sense of exploration. And the towns were pretty dead because there was nothing to do besides gyms, I would have added a daily mini game/challenge to the towns. Also we should have gotten an actual evil team that secretly worked under Rose with secret hideouts that could be like Zelda dungeons instead of team yell which is the worst “team” to date. It’s sad that it was so disappointing because I really love Pokémon, I just hope Gamefreak steps up their game next gen or I won’t be purchasing.
Pokemon Sword and Shield games is very good apart from missing the National Dex and accept that not all the Pokemon will appear in the games. Still I really wished they bring back GTS to Pokemon Sword and Shield because they're a lot easier to trade than the link trade with someone who are only interest in shiny Pokemon, plus using GTS be able to show Pokemon that you want trade with and show their Pokeball so you can be able to have the rare Pokeball like Lure, Level, Love, Moon, Heavy, Safari, Friendship and Dream balls.👍🤞 I still used the surprise trade because I know the pokemon that is trade through the surprise trade with also contain any rare pokeball that I want in both my Sword and Shield games.
Pokemon is burning off on me which sucks since I rarely enjoy other games other than Animal crossing. It's also bad that they took out Dragonite. This Pokemon has been there for so many games and also is known to be a Mailman. There are so many things they could have done but choose not too. It's bad enough they might make the sequel a little better and maybe fix a few bugs (like the mouse that is on a pc pops up out of nowhere into cutscenes). I'm tired of the crap and the only reason why I enjoyed Sun and moon was due to Lillie (as well as the thought of Guzma was abused as a child in the side story) but then ultra sun and look ruin everything which made it feels like I was playing the same game as its previous games but with extra pokemon and story ark which is how I feel about the next version of sword and shield. They will maybe add new or a few old pokemon and sorta switch the story (even tho it seems like there isn't one due to everyone takes part in the action but you so it feels like you are the side character in a 60 dollars game).

Does it seem like the story mode for pokemon sword/shield seem streamlined/rushed? Also I'm not a player hugely based off filling the pokedex but the fact that after becoming the champion, there is not much else to do. ORAS had ways for you to find new legendaries, Silver/Gold/SS/HG had another freaking region, other games let you challenge gym leaders again. Is there a way we can get gamefreak to like take their time and maybe make a game involving every region?
Job job man. Agree with practically everything ur saying. Imma still get the game, but I'm a tad disappointed. Most of my favs are gen 1, or closer to that than gen 8.

So sad. My favourite Pokemon were Squirtle, Gardevoir and Misdreavus. One’s making it in, but without her Mega Evolution and the other two are out. Makes me so sad :(
If you want to protest SwSh, play Pokemon Showdown instead. Same Pokemon just without the handholding story or $60 price tag.
Like previous games, some Pokémon unavailable in the games are transferable to Sword and Shield. It mostly consists of the missing Kanto starters, the Alola starters and various mythicals and legendaries. It's not much, I'll admit.

@@pooppooper9033 The Galar Dex has 400 Pokémon and has 35 transfer only Pokémon outside of that for a total of 435 Pokémon.

I was previously really hyped for getting this game, and enjoying a mix of nostalgia and new features, but after watching a few of these reviews/commentary videos, my opinion's shifted. The game doesn't look terrible (and some people definitely took their outrage way too far sending death threats etc.), just well... boring.
Sword/Shield just look and feel to be such disappointments, as I had hoped for a massive, immersive home console pokemon game ever since Stadium 1 on N64, yet this imo is such a letdown.
Although it's one thing for fans to be outraged at a franchise, it's far far worse for them to feel apathetic. At least when they're anrgy, fans are still passionate and engaged, but with apathy comes disinterest and eventually giving up on the franchise for good (or at least a considerable length of time).
So I’ve never played a pokemon game before this. Are the stories not a main focus of the games? I just didn’t get invested in this. My little brother had me play let’s go pikachu and it was fun. Though he told me “ the other games are nothing like this one” but so far it seems the same to me

they wanted the pokemon to suit the region there is almost 1000 pokemon i have many faves yes its sad they didn't all make the game but i think its a good idea to have the pokemon suit the region.

The only reason this game took me any amount of time to complete was due to shiny hunting yamper and rookidee at the beginning. After I had both, I swept through all of it in a day. Pathetic excuse of a pokemon game. I hope they change their route with this franchise, or they are going to kill it. As much as I love pokemon, I can't be a part of what they are turning into.

The graphics and animations aren't even the whole problem. The world itself is void. Little to no post game content? No dungeons? (Mt.moon, Victory road, ect) Linear hallways routes? (10 of them) The most handholdy game yet? (Team fulled healed mutliple times in multiple routes, Fully healed after every person in the elite 4, Forced Xp share)
It hurts so much watching your (prior?) favorite game series sink down like this... I'm not buying the game either to be honest, this is not the Pokémon game that I wanted to play.
as someone who's last new pokemon game was red version, glitches were a huge part of that game. that said, nothing was massively game breaking, and they were doing it on a shoestring budget.
the laziness part i get, if they said they were reusing models from the start, no one would have probably cared. once you have a pokemon drawn up, how much do you need to change really? battle animations definitely looked like they needed upgrades though
graphics in games are one of the lowest priorities for me. i don't really care if the game is super high res or using sprites, i find gameplay much more important.
some of the visual errors are pretty telling, most look like they could easily be patched. though, why they would release a game like that is beyond me
mechanically, i do think the game was getting close to collapsing under it's own weight, and getting far too convoluted for a game marketed to children. sure, some strategy is needed to beat the game, but there's probably a lot of players who'll just brute force their way through it anyway
to be honest, dropping a large chunk of pokemon doesn't bother me too much, because i normally just find a few i like and use them for the entirety of the game, there's still about 350 other's i'll likely never use, and lay around in the PC the entire game.
i understand some of the backlash, but other things i think people are overreacting to, or just nitpicking. going by this, there does seem to be some genuinely major issues that should be ironed out before release
I think your points are all very fair, though there's one thing I do think you're missing.
You mention that game graphics and a lot of the Mon being cut as not mattering that much, and that's understandable to be honest. But imagine for a moment these things did matter to you. Then this would probably be a very bad thing for you. Now back to reality, some one somewhere out there DOES care about these things, and for him, the game is being severely cut and possibly ruined. Because of this game's bad graphics and Mons being cut, SOMEONE out there is gonna be upset. In fact, it's reasonable to say a LOT of people are actually hit by this.
Now I know what you're thinking. But what do other people's experience matter to me? Well, remember that it's still overall a net loss for Pokemon, and know it also makes it clear that Game Freak doesn't care about its fans. Even you, because the things they cut could potentially matter to you. So by buying and supporting the game, you're telling Game Freak, "Yeah it's cool to make a low budget game and not care about us the fans at all." I mean, what if next Game Freak removed something you did care about? It's all about the principal here, and the fact is they're being lazy and not caring about their fans. It's BS.
Just something to remember IMO.

I dont disagree with you, however I'm still going to pick up these games. Yes the games have problems and there is no denying that, however since the game is not out yet ( well in some places it is) it's hard to judge the game. Yes gamefreak may have been "lazy". But I generally feel there are some people at that company who worked their butts of day and night to make this a great game. Not to mention this is gamfreaks's first attempt at making a console pokemon game, so maybe the next game will be the shining star we've all been waiting for. Will I be buying swsh, yes. I am judging you or insulting you for not buying it, no. Pokemon definently should be better, but I personally think these games look fun if not anything else. So I will buy these games. I respect your opinion and you have the right to have it. That's all and thank you for reading!

Actually they do have to release it in November because of how big Pokemon is as a conglomerate. They have to release it before the anime, manga, and trading cards. If they delay it, they're schedule goes out of wack. As for no mega evolutions and z moves, they probably figured Dinamaxing and gigantamaxing would replace them.

I haven't gotten the game, I just watched pv's and playthroughs. and that was enough to change my initial opinion. from "it's garbage, why shoould I spend 60 bucks for some junk" to "it's not as bad. I like Sonia, Marney, Nessa amazing designs" in terms of pokemon, the 2 mascot legends were big turnoff from moment one. essentially same dog equipped with different weapons. like they think of a name for their releases then design the legendary based off that. as for other pokemons, there are more bad than good. the coal thing(2nd stage) has Golem's face attached onto a mining cart. Galarian Weezing's design makes sense but it's lazy. I get the pipe is suppsed to be a chimney and Weezing functions like a factory but why choose Weezing for this role? can't you come up with more creative design? and the worm that shapes like condom sleeves? it's good for laughs. apple, sliced apple, apple camel. gossifleur is flabebe recycled, its evolution is Jumppluff. Squirtle with a bloated head we all know that one. water starter evolves to Chaos, grass starter evolves to Donkey Kong, fire one get to be a rabbit racer. the list goes on and on....Also many returning pokes are a disappointment like the trashbag, easter bunny from kalos, ice cream, the rock thing, blind monstrocity bat, slurpuff(I'd rather have some legit cream puffs) and this creepy pink fairy... what monstrocity. For the good: trainer customization is back, hat pokemon, wild area, edittable trainer card, Farfech'd finally got evolution, I like the concept of idol and her maniacal fans, Sonia, gym trial(only seen 2), Bede (Gary Oakish rival), animation glitches are fun to laugh at, chairman Rose's secretary, Meowth got its love via Galarian form. It's nice how Linoone, Farfetch'd, Corsola, got their evolution but sad that it's Galar exclusive
