Always love new release videos both fixed wing and drone. As a 71 year old I still have the kid in me😁

I have watched this video 3 times now. From 1st sight, I liked the way this plane looks. I did hear that it has a few issues, but nothing a few simple mods will hopefully fix. So I bought 1. Takeoffs are challenging, it doesn’t like to roll straight along the runway. It has been explained to me that it is caused by prop wash, so I’m learning to control the swerve.
You’re right about it not being suitable as a 1st plane. In the air it behaves itself, but the pilot needs some confidence to control it on the ground.

I added flaperons to the radio settings and now I can land at a much slower speed with steeper glide angle. The wide cord makes this especially affective.

That's a nice looking model. It makes me instantly think about replacing the pilot head with a camera on a pan servo and doing some scale-like fpv

I think I'm in love with this model. I love the retro looking of this one.
The pilot may look a bit funny but i like it. With a scarf flapping in the wind, it'll remind me the universe of some movies from Ghibli Studios.
I wish it can be converted into a seaplane and it'll be absolutely perfect.

The screws holding the wings on look very small. What are they screwing into in the fuselage and are you confident about them?

I had an extended break from flying and lost my nerve somewhat. Now I find my Parkzone P-47 and even my Trojan a little too fast for the amount of nerve to spare and end up bring them in after a minute or two. This might be gentle enough to get my brain engaged

After a good deal of flying, my comments are:
The undercarriage mount is too weak, broken mine twice with only slightly less than perfect landings and as I speak the glue is drying on the glass weave cloth I am adding to reinforce it.
Wheels are far too hard which transfers forces to the weak undercarriage mount, replace with Tundra soft foam wheels.
Rudder servo not up to the job of operating both rudder and tail wheel, stripped the gears on mine so replaced both rudder and elevator servos with metal geared ones.
The foam hinge lines are not strong enough, both my ailerons came off, fortunately on the ground, replaced with proper hinges and reinforced rudder and elevator with hinge tape.
Very prone to ground looping, need a lot of rudder to take off straight, fitted a stabilised receiver to mine and this has cured it.
Flies nicely and is great if you need to land in a small space, cut the throttle and the draggy design means you can come in at a steep angle without gaining a lot of speed, flare out and land gently so you don't break the undercarriage.
Plenty of space for the battery you just need to improvise a way to secure it.
Very prone to hangar rash, may borrow some of my wife's watercolour paints to touch in where the colour has worn off.
Having said all that I would probably buy another.

Ha - my first thought was also that the pilot needs a scarf! One other very small nit-pick ... the rudder horn is really badly positioned (way behind the hinge line), which will give differential throw unless you tinker around with the geometry at the servo end (or program it out on the Tx). What's the power like btw?

Amazing airplane, Lee! I loved it! 😀
About the pilot, it's not a big deal... Just take him from there and put a FPV camera instead. It would be awesome! 😊
BTW, speaking about balancing props, I'm going to need to do that for my TBS D clone. Later I'm going to look for your older videos. 😊

The high drag to lift ratio of the Slow Poke should make it a little easier to fly than a Bixler which glides shallower and faster. I'll buy and fly the Slow Poke since I once had a Top Dawg which goes back to the 70's. Of course if you want to slow down a Bixler you add fixed brakes or flaps to change it's flight characteristics. I think I'll do that too.

Are the wings detachable for transport, or does repeated take apart of the wings weaken the structure?

Another thing that doesnt qualify this as a beginner plane is the pitch sensativity on the Elevator control...the short moment between the tail n wings makes it that way!

brian forward. I didn’t have any problems with the CG. But I’m concerned about getting the battery placement consistent & secure, there is a lot of extra space in the compartment. It was too easy to place the battery off centre, & only a strip of Velcro to hold it in place.
I made a plywood tray with a low wall on 3 sides, a strap that wraps around the battery, & glued that inside the fuselage. The strap had to be near the end of the battery so it can be reached by my stubby fingers, not ideal but the battery didn’t fall out of place with the plane held inverted, without the aid of a Velcro strip. Velcro was then added. Now the battery will go easily into the correct place & stay there.
That was all done a few days ago, I haven’t flown it since. My Slow Poke is only 6 flights old & is a step up from a high wing trainer, it has been my mission to maiden & trim it myself (with lots of advice), so I’ve not been confident with this plane to loop or roll it. This mod should relieve my biggest concern (the battery coming loose & throwing the CG out).
      I hope this helps.

      @@koalatails6391 hi
Thanks for a comprehensive reply. I brought a fully adjustable battery tray on ebay hot glued it to the plane. So now you just slide the tray from the main body of the lipo holder strap the lipo I. Then slide in back in. I'm cheating with the loops and first flight I always fit a spektrum AX3 FLIGHT STABILISATION UNIT. TAKE OFF LOADS OF HIGHT SWITCH THE STABILITY OF TRIM IT OUT. IF IT DOES GO TITS UP SWITCH THE STABILITY UNIT BACK ON.... SAVES THE PLANE.... I'M DOING A MAIDEN FLIGHT TOMMOROW 3MPH WIND... I LET YOU KNOW

Hi Brian, I didn’t know that I could buy a battery tray. It can be hard to find RC products that aren’t high volume sales in Australia. Fingers crossed my home made tray will do the job.
One piece of advice I was given, the control rods for the rudder & elevator can flex, so where the rods exit the fuselage, glue the rod’s plastic sleeve to the fuselage. Don’t go near the rods with the glue, just the sleeves.
Good luck with your maiden flight.

You want the wire to the tail wheel to flex otherwise a bump to the tail wheel will put a high load on the servo. I think this is probably the main cause of stripped rudder servo gears.

I am determined to recover use of my left arm & hand, for the sake of flying again after suffering a cerebral stroke, which nearly killed me, now about 1-year ago. My arm is coming along but the hand recovery is slower, however that's what my physician told me to expect anyway. Walking is not as much of a problem.

Dihedral, not camber. This Slow is not the same of it's previous planes that were named Slow Poke. There aerodynamic differences which in turn make them different plane. Landing gear mounted backwards.

Goofy and Cartooney as it may be it is one dang fun plane to fly but a challange to land smoothly on hard surfaces which wouldnt make it a good beginner plane at all. but once you master landing it smoothly your a much better Rc Pilot for Mastering its difficult ground handling.

For 70 years the de-facto R/C trainers have had their props facing forward. Having taught dozens of students to fly R/C I do not understand your aversion.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  6 лет назад +4

For those models that have a prop in the front and landing gear it's often too easy for a very inexperienced pilot to nose over and damage the front of the model, or when getting a little bit carried away, crash into the ground and it's always the nose that takes the hit. Having the prop out of the way just reduces the amount of fixing that that's needed. As it's me that usually ends up being asked to sort the model out, not having to also deal with broken props, bent prop shafts, destroyed motor mounts is handy and speeds the repair. Not having to deal with those problems (for those pilots that don't have someone like me around to help them repair it) also means it's less daunting for them to repair their models after a crash too. In the modern age of radio control, lots of pilots don't have access to someone who can teach them to fly. So it's a case of trial and error and learning crash by crash. For those new pilots, having less to deal with and repair after a crash is a huge benefit. Everyone has their own way of approaching it, this just happens to be mine. Happy flying
