I've been watching him for fucking months and I still can't wrap my head around how tight he is. Prodigy. And Domi is ridiculously capable too. And everything they do is unique from the last, not necessarily sonically, but... just two kids having fun with instruments but on a level nobody's ever heard before. It's beautiful and life affirming that these two ever got in the same room together.
These two young musicians are not only extraordinarily talented, but in addition, they pay a great and beautiful homage to this great composition that is Havona, and to its author, the legendary Jaco. Thank you !
saw these 2 live with Chon and they blew my mind, i listened to JD for a while before then but never heard these 2 together and god damn they are amazing
WHAT THE FUCK???????????????? That kid on the drums isn't even trying, the magic is just happening. Amazing talent. JD Beck and DOMi are out of this world!
I was walking thru NAMM this year and thru the mess of noise there, JD stopped me in my tracks with his playing. He is an inspiration and an all around beast
There is no limit for domi's talent as long as stays enthusiastic and never stuck in past always evolving she will be a genius of our lifetime. Just finding her voice but it's formidable!!!
He really does. Not to distract or anything, but check out the NPR Tiny Desk convert with Joey Alexander. It's amazing in general, but if you want to see a drummer who can absolutely get the most out of almost nothing, that's a perfect example. It's mind boggling the variety he gets out of a kick, snare, hihat and ride cymbal. And the group as a whole, when the magic really kicks in, it's unreal.
I've seen a few videos of these two - ridiculously intelligent kids... But - kudos, as well, to the videographer: The video is very clear, and the angles and closeups, esp. of JD are superb, so that the viewer can really enjoy observing what JD - and Domi are doing. Just fabulous!!! Watch over and over!!! And I'm not even a musician!
Great performance, these two have become some of my absolute new talent jazz musicians. So much talent and feeling! In this piece I especially like everything in the climax leading up to 2:20. Love IT!
Sy Borg I think that’s kinda unfair to say. Sure Chris Dave is probably an influence of his but I don’t think that their playing is so similar that it’s justified to say he’s simply emulating him. When I listen to Chris I can tell that he played a lot of straight ahead jazz before he started doing more modern stuff. With JD I don’t really hear that so much, his playing is a lot more backbeat focused
@@user-np2td3lg7t I didn't mean it as an insult or to downplay his talent. The original comment made it sound like this kid has a unique style that came to him naturally, which is wrong. His roots can directly be traced back to Chris Dave, Questlove etc.
@@sinane.y Ehhhh maybe a little, but there is still something wholely unique going on here. Not comparing him tony but u could have said that he just got his style from combining art, philly and roy but that wouldn't do him justice. This is some new shit.
The touch, the feel, the dynamics, the vocabulary, the ingenuity, the comping....I could go on and on and that's just JD. Domi has it all too: when she goes into that vamp? Just crazy good. I've seen them in a bunch of settings, but this is probably my favorite so far.
Had the pleasure meeting this cat @ NAMM ‘18. Super cool. His creative genius reminds me so much of Chris Dave. One of the hottest young cats out here reppin’ TX. Somebody give him a shampoo and denim overall endorsement 💯💯💯
WOW! That was amazing. I know JD worked with Sput as a mentor and hangs with Taron Lockett. His playing is unreal super precise and creative Domi is awesome as well. Can't wait to see JD a few years from now...Havona
I *knew* that I was hearing some Sput grooves mixed in there! It doesn't surprise me at all that he would be a mentor to this kid. He loves showing new talent the ways of the force. JD has taken all of that knowledge and turned it into something unique to him. He's going to be a monster drummer for years to come! Domi hails from another planet, too. I first saw her paired up with Louis Cole a few years ago and they had a similar fusion/funk thing going on that blew my mind. Louis Cole is also another amazing keyboard player and drummer, so when Domi came across JD, she was probably like "oh hell yeah, let's do this!". Thankfully there are a lot of videos of this duo now, but only a couple of them are high quality studio recordings like this one. Most are just people recording from their phones and whatnot, which is still better than nothing, but I'd love a high quality recording of these two doing a full set together.
I've watched this video hundreds of times, I've slowed it down and obsessed over what he's doing. I've gotta say for my tastes this kid is the future. U can miss the complexity if u watch it at full speed, try it out at 75% or even 50%. My mind is fucking blown.
This takes a lot more talent than I feel some people may recognize. I’m very appreciative of this content, and she accompanied very well. Love those keys.
This rendition of Havona (courtesy of one of the Greatest Acid-Jazz bands, Weather Report) is excellent! It’s so beautifully evident how (GREAT) music transcends time and musicians. Long live this particular due, and continue to RespectTheMusic🎼🎶✊🏽
Saw them live tonight and they blew my mind. The chemistry and raw talent with these two was refreshingly inspirational. I can't wait to experience what else you guys create! "SMD" :p
the future past is now, just jaw-droppingly inspiring, to me these two show a new flowering of the next iteration in the progression of musical performance
JD started playing drums 9 years ago and legend has it, he's not taken a quarter note rest since.
You only get so many notes, and he's going to make sure he's used all of his when the time comes.
Diet Louis Cole
@@MasDouc Interestingly enough I see Louis Cole more as Diet JD Beck in the "how many notes" category lol
@@ILikeWafflzBut is it really interesting?
Maybe an 8th note break? No???
These two need a NPR Tiny Desk Concert
boy do we have some good news for you :)

So....no one knows you at vic firth
This is great because it feels like it’s on the edge of falling apart but it’s so controlled.
Just superb. So ahead of their time. 👏 🔥
Musicians like these bring hope and joy for the future of jazz, excellence! Btw love your playing as well Juan!
Mattias Bylehn thanks man and I totally agree with you. These two are a special breed for sure.
I am subbed to your RUclips channel
Juan Carlito Mendoza probably Berklee
I would say that they are not ahead of their time but just in time ! They are so young and so great !
sick
Indeed Davis😆
This is one of my favorite Weather Report songs and they reinvented it splendidly
what song is it?
@@damiansanchez429 Havona by Weather Report!

JD Beck gives me that ‘Man I wanna practice’ feeling
And also that ‘I need to buy a 6” splash’ feeling
small hats, a binary snare, a bass drum and 10 hours a day
man, you too!! I've already worked on half the stuff they're doing!! hahahahahaha
And also that ‘I’m gonna sell my drum kit’ feeling. 🤣😋
"man i wanna sell my instrument on ebay "

When a 15 yr old kid does more with 3 drums and 3 cymbals than a lot of other drummers can do with a full kit...
These folks have CHOPS!
for sure! only its 4 cymbals tho... sorry Ill let myself out.

Most people never find a unique voice. This kid did it when he started talking.
His unique voice comes from emulating Chris Dave
