She’s legally trained. She is hoping to a) create reasonable doubt within the jury by avoiding their questions. She can manipulate lawyers, she doesn’t have that kind of rapport with the jury so she wants to avoid them. They are more difficult to groom b) use this incident later as grounds for appeal c) trying to set up a platform to garner pity for herself so she can manipulate further at a later date. She’s gotten away with this behaviour for all these years, she seems to think she will succeed this time, too.

Still curious how she wanted a jury trial. Why not plead and avoid all the horrific evidence for herself and others. Don’t get it.
Because she is a sociopath, hence she experiences neither shame nor guilt. It didn't cost her anything to go to trial, and it gave her a minuscule chance of freedom so she went for it.

YEAH. Idk if it’s true but I’ve heard child abusers/killers have HORRIBLE time in women’s prison. The rationale is most mothers have a maternal instinct…. Even if they committed robbery, killed their husband, in for drug related offenses, they love their children and are PIIIIISSSSED to be taken away from them. Then when they see a woman who HAD her children, but harmed or killed them….. prison justice is a real threat

I can’t imagine how she could’ve tortured her own child and is now too sick of learning about everything she did. I’m trying not to judge but my heart is with the child who couldn’t fight back and who was starved and tortured.

What could the MI state government have done to spare this poor child from this tragedy? Why wasn’t he in school receiving special education services? Why didn’t he receive much needed medical treatment and social services? I have not heard about any community support to this child and family. The story is far from over.
They would have needed to know where he was. Someone would have needed to call. Didn’t you follow the trial? His father and stepmother sent him to her and she locked him away and hid him. She hasn’t had contact with her own family for two decades - she said that on the stand - so they don’t even know she had a 15 year old, save her brother who lives in Oaklahoma. He was kept away from neighbours, was in a brand new location, his stepfather had a disability - wheelchair bound and had had a stroke - and wasn’t physically living in the house. How was CPS or DCFS supposed to get involved save anyone reporting him missing? The father is the one who dropped the ball. There was a court order that she shouldn’t have had custody of him.
