Its refreshing to hear someone else who agrees with me that HD in some older classics is not always a good thing. As a film buff, some of my greatest memories growing up was staying up late at night watching grainy monster and horror movies. When someone asked Harryhausen before he died what he thought of modern digital effects, he replied that when you make a fantasy film look too real, you're taking away the fantasy. That pretty much sums it up.

When I peruse the “sales” on streaming videos on Amazon, I never ever waste money on renting/buying anything in HD that wasn’t filmed with that technology in mind. There’s just no point. (Plus, my vision is twenty years post LASIK, so why bother?)

While I think there is some merit to this, it's mostly a matter of nostalgia. Degraded film prints and low quality home video releases aren't the original experience. These films didn't didn't look like that when they were originally released in theaters. If they did, there wouldn't be a high quality source to transfer to HD/4K.

    • @Politano1955
      @Politano1955 9 месяцев назад

Its not really the picture quality itself, but rather the more "realistic" computer generated special effects of today. They're just not as fun.@@Arglactable

    • @Arglactable
      @Arglactable 9 месяцев назад

@@Politano1955 I don't disagree, but that's mostly distinct from the merits of 4K vs HD vs SD. I think one of the biggest advantages of practical effects is that they provide constraints. If filmmakers wanted to show a really impressive set piece, they had to actually figure out how to do it. Modern films can just edit/composite together a million takes with gratuitous CGI to show just about anything. So often nothing has any weight because none of it is real on any level. Powerful technology used poorly.

Since you are a war movie fan, I suggest the book COMBAT FILMS: AMERICAN REALISM, 1945-2010 (2nd Ed.) by Steven Jay Rubin. It's out of print and expensive now, but maybe you can get it from a library.
Rubin also provides excellent commentaries on war movies including the remastered bluray THE GREAT ESCAPE, 633 SQUADRON, etc. and on the two unofficial James Bond movies (he wrote THE COMPLETE JAMES BOND MOVIE ENCYCLOPEDIA).

    The Mighty JW!
I like what you said about more magic found in fewer pixels. While I appreciate all this new ultra HD 4K tech for certain things, namely documentaries, I don't think it's always best for narrative filmmaking. I once heard someone theorize that one reason film became the most popular art form in the past hundred years is because it operates on a level similar to dreams -- sequences can be told out of order, perspectives can shift, they can be surreal, etc. If so, then, well, I don't know about everyone else, but my dreams aren't in HD. So maybe the picture shouldn't be perfect...?
Anyway, just theorizing. As always, thanks for your reviews.

I love both the original and the Joe Young remake. The remake was different enough to make it seem fresh, even though it was basically the same story. Charlize Theron and Bill Paxton were very likable, and the fx for Joe were flawless. I always remembered Beautiful Dreamer from the original of course, and it was the first time I’d heard that song, but the score for the remake by James Horner is beautiful, particularly its piece with the African chorus. The animation for the ‘49 film is among the best work Harryhausen ever did. He really added a lot of pathos to Joe. I like that you pointed out how Joe rolls his fingers sitting in the back of the truck. Always got a laugh with audiences. By the way, Terry Moore and Ray Harryhausen have a cameo in the remake. Thanks again for your insights.

The effects still hold up for me, although the storyline is hokey in parts, but overall it pulls you in, so much so for me I'm crying when Joe is rescuing the child from the fire and he falls.... even now. Ben Johnson is very likeable in the role and it's amazing to think this is the same guy who is a member of The Wild Bunch so many years later.

I ignore the nonsense that rejects classic films based on complaints such as : it's black&white, the sometimes theatrical acting style is a turn off, too slow, "dated social norms" and absurd special effects etc. Most of the complaints really come down - "I can't follow literate screenplays" and "I can't imagine a world without smart phones", as well as "I'm expected to think for myself, not going to happen".....

I loved your review of this film. I think that this film has a beautiful and heartfelt message, it's a lovely fantasy, and I think that Joe Young's facial expressions make his character all the better. I totally agree with you when it comes to technology ruining certain things, as a child I used to marvel at Gerry Anderson productions using marionettes and other techniques but with the advent of better technology these things are now very apparent which spoils the fantasy somewhat.

Completely sympathise with the nostalgia for the Cathode Ray Tube days, and the strange luxuriance of the way low definition 'polishes' old effects. I first saw Mighty Joe Young when I was very small, because the BBC were running a film season entitled 'Monster Movie Madness', which naturally began with King Kong. Getting to see King Kong on a dark winter's evening on a little black-and-white TV is an experience that ought to be part of every childhood in my view...

I saw the 98 remake at the theater and remember really liking it. Crazy to think I havent seen that movie in 25 years. I agree with the increase in resolution starting to actually hurt older films and that goes double for any movie that has creature effects. You can really rob these older films of their whimsy by wanting too much detail.

This is one of those films that I keep telling myself, "I really need to watch this someday." You review convinces me; I'm going to watch it today. In about half an hour from now, in fact.
Since I don't own a TV, and I watch everything on my iMac, AND since my internet speed is so lousy I can't watch anything above 360p without serious buffering, I don't think too much about image quality. What bothers me is the audio. I firmly believe that most films should be in mono. (Nice loud mono too; none of this stereo whispering that I have to strain to hear.)
Some stereo for ambient sounds is okay; what I can't stand is when a character moves to the side of the screen and the dialogue audio suddenly jumps way over to the side too. In my headphones it's very jarring and annoying. I imagine surround sound is even worse, though I've never had an opportunity to experience it. If the video screen is in front of me, I want all the audio to be in front of me as well.

“I don’t know what happened but we’re doing it today” the way you said that was so funny lol. I love Mighty Joe Young, it’s such an enjoyable film that you can tell was made with love. As much as I love King Kong I would have to agree that Joe Young is an easier watch and we connect with Joe much faster than Kong and I think him being much more anthropomorphic is a big reason for it, the human character’s interactions with him are also important, Terry Moores Jill especially because she loves and cares about him from the beginning so we the audience embrace him too. Terry Moore, Ben Johnson and Robert Armstrong were great. Armstrong was hilarious as O’Hara. I also thought the second act was a tad slow but the third act made up for it. The first time I saw Mighty Joe Young on television I believed it was off colour because there was something wrong with the film due to age, it’s probably gone orange over time like one of those silent films from the early 20s but I learned soon after that it was an intentional choice and it works, it conveys the heat and somehow makes the sequence more memorable. I also saw the remake first and liked it well enough but really loved the original much more when I saw it. Strange to think that the remake of Mighty Joe Young and the Roland Emmerich Godzilla came out the same year in 1998, .Giant Apes and Godzilla, the film landscape hasn’t changed that much. Your appreciation of Ben Johnson this year has been very funny lol 2023 shall be known and remembered as the Weiselberry year of Ben Johnson 🤠 lol
Love this film and love this review, I’ve heard you mention this film a few times over the years so was very excited to watch your review. I’m a week late to it though :(
~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~

Hi JW. Thank you for the review. Mighty Joe Young is one of the greats, somewhat underrated in my opinion. Like many others I look at MJY as the third of a trilogy, with Carl Denham having changed his name to avoid creditors and other nuisances. Could work, at least as head canon.
Speaking of high definition making wires and such in old films more obvious, last year I rewatched Rodan. This is perhaps my favorite non-Godzilla Toho kaiju movie (either that or Mothra). I've watched it many times over the years. There's one scene in particular where the wires on Rodan are very obvious. To my surprise, this new remaster had digitally erased the wires. This was one time I was happy for an upgrade to a classic.
    Have a great week.

Excellent review JW. Despite my jokingly referring to this as King Kong Lite, I do enjoy it. And of course being the first Harryhausen movie, it holds a special place in my heart. Even a "lesser" Harryhausen movie is going to be special. Joe Young is a lovable character.

Way to go, Jerome! I grew up with the remake starring Charlize Theron and Bill Paxton (HUDSON!) and never realized there was an original veraion. I saw this movie during my early days of watching more old hollywood movies, and I thought it was quite charming, and I absolutely love Terry Moore as Jill Young, and 😮 Johnson is cute as Greg.
Also, hi Patty Lane's dad! (Shout-out to William Schallert on The Patty Duke Show) 😊

I was so impressed when George Lucas wanted to 'update' STAR WARS' then-CGI effects. "So it wasn't good enough to survive even 30 years?" And that was from the filmmaker himself. "Well, I can update it" is a whole other issue. Harryhausen had 30 years in which HE could have updated his work but never did. Why bother? Talos creaking about, stepping off of his monument - what possible effect could change that original view? NOTHING. But CGI, sure... go ahead. Pretend they're making it 'even more realistic'. Uh huh... yeah, riiiight. I enjoy both of the MIGHT JOE films. It's not a matter of preference - it's the fact that we have both and we SHOULD have both available.

Great review. Something in the tone of this movie has always kept it from feeling epic to me, although I love the stop motion effects. There is a bit of a tongue in cheek feel to it that doesn’t draw me in like King Kong. Exemplified in a scene of forced physical comedy with Armstrong’s character that feels jarring. Anyone who has viewed this film will know the scene I mean. That said, this is a title I liked enough that I still own a copy on prehistoric physical media - a 16mm film print.

That was a good review. I agree that sometimes the HD can highlight the imperfections of older movies. I do like the cheezy stuff like wires from older movies. I recently watched Treasure of the Four Crowns and it had wires clearly for its effects. I find that stuff amusing.

I wonder if seeing this on a projector, even a HD digital projector, will soften the image enough to blend the composition enough compare to 4K TVs. These films were meant to be projected on a large screen, and i imagine the filmmakers expected that to 'hide the strings'. I've always had that issue with newer TVs where it seems too sharp.

Mighty Joe Young was my great aunt's favorite movie. I didn't watch until 1988 when the colorized version was shown on tv.
There's a controversial subject, colorizing b&w movies. I can imagine what side of that argument you're on.
As far as the hd debate I don't mind seeing movies, especially older movies in hd or 4k resolution. Movies shot on film usually look really good in the 4k format since analog technology actually provides much higher resolution than modern digital camera. Yes some of the movie magic is lost when you can see the wires and optical composite fx, but that doesn't bother me.
Granted much of that is less visible when viewing these movies on the big screen as they were intended.
Thanks for this review, it was worth the wait.

I agree with your review and would only add that TV has chopped it up somewhat so you have hopefully seen the entire film and not the one edited to fit into a shorter timespan to accommodate commercials. Keep up the good work!

I have loved this movie since I was a kid watching Million Dollar Movie here in NYC. I liked everything about it - the story-line, the actors, the FX, the great
chase & fire sequences. Terry Moore was a cutie, Ben Johnson was heroic, & Robert Armstrong was just so damn funny. And don't get me started on the acting chops of Mr. Young. Even the minor roles were perfectly cast. They don't make them like that anymore that's for sure. Loved your review.

8:25 I own a video projector to watch my movies on. It does a better job helping old movie to have a nice clear image without removing the magic. I don't really like watching classic golden age Hollywood movies on 4K TVs that much, 4K TVs are obviously made to watch modern day movies, streaming shows and RUclips videos, not older movies.

Thank you for this very enjoyable review of one of the most fun films I used to watch on TV as a child. Like a number of your other commenters, I grew up in NYC where this film was shown every year on Thanksgiving (along with Laurel & Hardy's The March of the Wooden Soldiers AKA Babes in Toyland). I have not watched it in years, but remember being terrified when Joe and the others come upon the burning orphanage at the end. I don't remember seeing a better burning building scene ever, except perhaps in The Towering Inferno. Congratulations on completing the trio of reviews you originally began some time ago. And now I'm wondering if you have ever reviewed The March of the Wooden Soldiers? It has some wonderful effects scenes of its own, as it recreates the world of Toyland, where people like Little Bo Peep really exist!

You shouldn't be able to see the wires and when originally projected in a cinema you wouldn't have seen them, at least that was the rationale behind digitally removing them for the 4k restoration of War of the Worlds.😅

I have MIGHT JOE YOUNG on bluray and enjoyed your trivia, most of which I was unaware of.
You might review another giant gorilla movie, KONGA, a mediocre British monster movie in which the gorilla suit was the same one used as Ro-Man in ROBOT MONSTER, which you reviewed earlier.
Since you are a Ben Johnson fan, I suggest Robert Aldrich's HUSTLE (Burt Reynolds, Catherine Deneuve) in which Johnson has a rare none-Western role as a father whose daughter was murdered by a sleazy and powerful lawyer.

That appears to be a myth and his listing as a member of the cast on IMDb is an error. The strongman in the film is played by the *other* Swedish Angel, Phil Olafsson.
