My adult chorus is singing "Beautiful Dreamer" in an upcoming concert. I threw this out to the group as a movie trivia question tonight and I was the only one in the room who remembered it. Geesh, I felt old. So glad there are others here who loved it as much as I did.

When I first seen this movie as a little boy back in the 1960's and this scene came about, I was floored by this musical scene. This scene brought tears from my eyes for some odd reason. Even today in 2023 when I see this scene, it still brings tears to my eyes.

Amazing combination of live filming and stop-motion animation. Among the finest work done by the greatest of them all, Ray Harryhausen who learned his craft from Willis O’Brien , the creator of King Kong and worked with him on this film.

As a boy with an interest in music, I always enjoyed this orchestral arrangement of this great Stephen Foster song. To this day I remember the role of each instrument. I especially like the effective use of the violins and love the trombone counter-melody at the 3:12 mark. One of the favorite films of my youth. Yes, I still watch and enjoy it at every opportunity and know much of the dialogue by heart. Thanks for posting.

Beautiful and Royally staged. Brought a tear to my eye. Touching to see the deep relationship between the two lead players as they soar above the superficial throngs of the nightlife. On another level, the incredible orchestration and arrangement of the song and visuals buttress this theme. This is a profound combination of art, music, and science that shows how utterly BRILLIANT the artistic human mind can be! Unsurpassed! Yes, I am always emotionally moved by this scene due to all of these elements.

When I saw this film on Turner Classic Films this past Thursday, the US almost went into default, the stock market lost nearly 1000 points, our economy is in dysfunction, our law making body acts like spoiled children, and 31 soldiers died in a helicopter attack over Afghanistan.
Then you watch a scene like this and it reminds you how Hollywood can remind you of just how beautiful the world can really be.

  • @TheMovieDoctorful

There's such a magic to this film in all aspects, but the effects especially. Even to this day, it's a mystery to me how they were able to synchronize ol' Joe with the live action actors so well. I guess that's what happens when you have 2 of the greatest minds in the artform (Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen) on the same production.

And those of us who grew up in the NYC area recall those great Thanksgiving Day afternoons. When WOR-TV, channel 9, would show three classics back to back to back. The REAL King Kong (1933) at noon, Son of Kong at 2pm, and of course Mighty Joe Young at 4pm. Thanks for the post, and the memories.

Still one of the most amazing movie scenes I have ever seen in a fantasy film and who can argue with Stephen Foster. Great post for younger people who aren't familiar with this style of film production. Just saw the Rock in Rampage and things are so refined with computer animation it almost seems oddly phony compared to this. Granted, it may be nostalgia influencing my perception but this looks cool. Production values are outstanding IMO.

"Joe Mystery" Computer animation is more technological and in certain ways can produce images that look more 'real" but it tends to be overdone and some of the classic or older special effects of the pre 1960s can be amazing to watch.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s in NYC Channel 9 (WOR) presented this movie every few months, usually in the afternoons . It was regular "Old movie fare" that Channel 9 used to show. In the newspaper TV-program guide, the movie would usually be described as a "sentimental yarn" and would be given maybe three stars out of 5.
It was not considered a particularly good movie by more-modern standards of some two or three decades later. But now that even more decades have come and gone since it was first made, and there is an odd element of comparison between "Golden age" special effects, and " Computer age" special effects and the internet can present it to younger generations and also bring it back to older generations, one can realize how much this movie was a spectacular part of Hollywood fantasy even though it was to be considered a cheap old movie as time went on.
