this video made me watch Invincible, and it's probably gonna make me rewatch Akira soon. thanks for pointing this out! i like that the scenes follow a similar structure without being completely beat for beat. a very tactful Akira reference on Invincible's part
Yoooo bro that's awesome! Invincible's 2nd season is expected in late 2023, and I hope there's gonna be more cool references. Anyways, let me know when you rewatch Akira and what you think of it 😎
I did some research. Invincible had a budget of $10 million per episode with 153 animators working on it, with a runtime of 45 minutes~ per episode. There's 8 episodes, so the series totals 6 hours and 10 minutes of animation. For comparison, Akira had a budget of $9 million usd (which is $23.6 million adjusted for inflation today) and 222 animators working on it (with a significantly less amount of computer work.) And the movie is 2 hours and 4 minutes long. So you have considerably more people (with a background of old-school hand-drawing) and much better pay working on a movie that's a lot shorter and has a much stronger focus on animation itself rather than telling a story. It's no wonder the difference is so stark. Also I dont believe the laser is in the Invincible comics, which means this was made purely as an homage for one of the best animated movies ever made. And if you're trying to draw that parallel and say "look we put in that thing from akira", you cant be doing shit like 4:54 which is IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCENE. Those birds falling look horrible. You can animate like that in 2002 microsoft powerpoint, there is absolutely no excuse for doing it that badly.
I can tell there is some different material animation between Akira and Invincible. The Akira looks like oil paint made in smooth colors. While the invincible show has bright and dark coloring landscapes.
