    Although space orbital weapons are common in this genre of media, I immediately thought of the renowned Japanese cyberpunk anime Akira when I was watching Amazon Prime's TV series of the superhero Invincible. In Akira, the government tries to destroy the overpowered and out-of-control antagonist, Tetsuo, with SOL (Satellite Orbital Laser). In Invincible, the Global Defense Agency uses a similar weapon to try to hinder the unstoppable Omni-Man from locating his son and basically destroying the world. I know the weapon in Invincible is not technically SOL (although it could be FLOYD, the American counterpart of SOL which only appears in the manga and is also destroyed by Tetsuo) but the homage is definitely there.
    Film: Akira (1988)
    TV Series: Invincible (2021)
    Reddit thread of people arguing if the space weapon in Invincible is actually a reference to Akira or something else: / anyone_else_catch_the_...
    *Note: I edited out some scenes of both, but I included all the scenes that mention the space weapons for context
    AKIRA synopsis: After Tetsuo discovers that Akira has been dead and all that was left of him was frozen in a capsule, Colonel Shikishima orders to use SOL in an effort to stop Tetsuo. Tetsuo and Kaneda are fighting when SOL ignites its laser beam, directly hitting Tetsuo and taking out his right arm. The Colonel orders another blast, but Tetsuo creates a physic force field before chasing the beam all the way to SOL, destroying it with his power. SOL starts to blast down laser beams at random before succumbing to Earth's atmosphere, with debris raining down or burning up.
    Invincible synopsis: The GDA fires SOL at Omni-Man to buy them some time to alert Invincible and Atom Eve. The beam wipes out the ecosystem surrounding Omni-Man, but he emerges from a deep crater, unscathed. The beam hits Omni-Man again as he flies toward space, but he is unstoppable and destroys SOL. In the headquarters of the Guardians of the Globe, the Guardians are standing by to be used by the GDA but are arguing with each other. Black Samson, who had been watching the screen, calls them over to watch Omni-Man destroy SOL. At the same time, Invincible and Atom Eve witness the destruction of SOL.

    Wish Invincible could afford better animation. Cool story, acting, and visual story telling, but when you side it by Akira, you can really see the budget.

    • @indecisive.325
      @indecisive.325  2 года назад +31

      Akira had a record-breaking budget for its time. I know Invincible's budget pales in comparison

  • @Sykroid
    @Sykroid Год назад +39

    I did some research. Invincible had a budget of $10 million per episode with 153 animators working on it, with a runtime of 45 minutes~ per episode. There's 8 episodes, so the series totals 6 hours and 10 minutes of animation.
    For comparison, Akira had a budget of $9 million usd (which is $23.6 million adjusted for inflation today) and 222 animators working on it (with a significantly less amount of computer work.) And the movie is 2 hours and 4 minutes long.
    So you have considerably more people (with a background of old-school hand-drawing) and much better pay working on a movie that's a lot shorter and has a much stronger focus on animation itself rather than telling a story. It's no wonder the difference is so stark.
    Also I dont believe the laser is in the Invincible comics, which means this was made purely as an homage for one of the best animated movies ever made. And if you're trying to draw that parallel and say "look we put in that thing from akira", you cant be doing shit like 4:54 which is IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCENE. Those birds falling look horrible. You can animate like that in 2002 microsoft powerpoint, there is absolutely no excuse for doing it that badly.

    I know Akira is the og and all, but I think Invincibles laser was fucking badass, and looked way more destructive. Akiras zaps off Tetsuos arm.. meanwhile all thats happens to Omni-Man after getting lasered TWICE is a nose bleed...a 400 billion dollar nose bleed.

    In terms of how affective it was the one that hit tetsuo blew off his arm apart but the one with Omni man just gave him a nose bleed so it’s pretty obvious who wins there

    If the hammer gave a Viltrumite a nosebleed, it would have destroyed Tetsuo... In SOL's defense, Akira's scientists never had to consider an enemy that wasn't ultimately human.

      It unfortunately is hard to have a concrete answer. If Invincible did this better, would we think it's less original just because they have a better artistic ability? Or would it be _more_ original because they are better able to copy something great?
      Maybe it's about intent. Did they do this because they appreciate akira?, or was it because they're trying to act as if they're as great as Akira was.
      Personally I think they just put it in because it looks cool and they're fans of cinema, which is dope lol
