The stakes have officially been set. The real journey now begins, and it only gets better from here. I honestly think ATLA is at its weakest in the first 6 episodes. That being said there is still a lot to love about them and i will never truly call any episode in this show bad or filler as all of them accompish something. whether it be futhuring the groups main goal or a specific character arc, or establishing/expanding on character traits.
I'm with you. I always tell people that, all things considered, book one is by far the worst book, and the fact that book 1 isn't actually bad at ALL just gives credit to how great the show is, as a whole. What a unicorn of a show man, for real.
Season 1 takes its time building up a solid foundation so that Season 2 and 3 can pull out all the stops. For that alone, Season 1 is a B+ in an A+ series. It is the Harry Potter 1 and 2 of this series, without the kidish whimsy that some people snub, the darker half would not be as impactful.🤷♀️

These first 8 episodes are like the calm before the storm. All we know before this is that Aang needs to train so he can beat the fire nation, but now with the deadline set and the stakes raised we really start to see the pressure. Aang already had the weight of saving not just the physical world, but also the spiritual world too. On top of all that now he has to learn all the elements and defeat the fire lord by summer to do it. I also love the fire sage in this episode it shows that the fire nation is a place with its own inner morals & conflicts where not everyone is outright evil.
I would argue that the first 11 episodes are the calm before "The Storm." lol
I can't believe i forgot how great Momo is. I never disliked him, but I'm ashamed I forgot what a solid part of the team he is

The summer ends on the autumnal equinox. Between winter solstice and autumn equinox there are 9 months (approximately December 22 - September 22).
Just a really cool detail (Not visible in your edit though) when Roku blasts the fire out and frees Sokka and Katara, the chains holding them melts away without harming them. that is an incredible feat of control on Rokus part!

Fun fact: The creators wrote his character after getting inspiration from his villain portrayal of Colonel Tavington from The Patriot movie. When they were looking for an actor, they asked their casting director to find someone for the role.

So the Winter Solstice is the first day of winter (Dec. 21, 22, or 23) and Aang has until the end of summer, so roughly 9 months (I don't think Roku saying "end of summer" has to exactly mean the very last day but for sure in that final week). You will also find that the seasons of the show loosely follow the actual seasons: Book 1=winter, Book 2=spring, Book 3=summer. It isn't exact (even this season clearly started in the fall since this is day 1 of winter) but roughly it will follow this pattern.
Also Roku vaporized metal chains without even lightly singeing any of the ones chained up, that is some insane heat and insane pinpoint accuracy.

The winter solstice isn't necessarily the first day of Winter. It depends what calendar system ATLAB uses. The winter solstice is simply the shortest day/longest night of the year. Also weirdly I think the world ignores the hemisphere's having opposite seasons which would complicate things somewhat but is unrealistic since it's clearly based on the real world.
This is when avatar became amazing. You finally got a idea what aang was capable of.
This two parter and episode 12 are really the two episodes that make book 1, in my opinion. The finale episodes too, actually. I also have to make something clear. Me personally, i generally dont enjoy react videos. I have nothing against them, they just arent normally my cup of tea. But im ALWAYS down to watch someone fall in love with this show, and watching people react is the closest thing we old school fans have to being able to watch the show for the first time all over again. Literally the worst thing about the show is that you can only watch with fresh eyes one time. With how much you both seem to be enjoying book one, and knowing that book 1 is mostly for worldbuilding and character introduction, you guys are gonna be completely blown away by books 2 and 3. If nobody has told you this yet, make sure you have tissues on stand-by. I've seen the show probably over a hundred times now, and there are still moments that never fail to make me cry. Both out of joy and sadness. Keep em coming, guys! Im very much enjoying hearing your thoughts and opinions as the show goes on!

absolutely my fav ep of S1, I remember seeing it for the first time when it was airing on TV and still to this day it gives me chills. I'm grateful to have grown up with the show, worth every minute for my kid-self.
We had it tough because we didn’t no when w new episode was gonna come on lol but I’m grateful also
Now we have the true stakes of the show. Now Roku probably doesent have any proof that Ozai will use the comet since I don't belive he has had the oppertunity to listen in on them not counting any spirit shenanigans but even the potential threath of this being used is enough for him to give Aang his mission.
Zhao still being a prick as usuall. Zuko actually apologized to Iroh probably because him being captured is fresh in his mind. With the sages we see that they actually where going to serve the avatar even with the nation going to war but because Aang was trapped in the ice they eventually lost faith and probably had little other choice than to serve the fire lord just to have some pourpose. There really wasen't that much divison as it was just a group of old dudes on a island and Zhao is historically a dick so he probably just got everyone charged because he didn't care.
So yeah Aang has to master the four elements before the comet comes somthing witch probably takes at least a few decades depending on how hard one element is and he has to it in about a year otherwise the world is probably doomed. The worst part is that this isn't exactly a task he can say no to as even tough he didn't want to be the avatar letting the world be destroyed would be a bad thing. Well at least he has masterd airbending otherwise he would be completley screwed as there are no airbenders left.

If Zhao wasn't so greedy, he could work with Zuko to capture the Avatar. Zuko would get his position redeemed, and Zhao would be honoured as the man who made it possible.
Instead, he made Zuko into a rival, and that's the kind of thing that always bites people in the tuckus

Get used to Sokka busting out the good ideas. He's hampered by the pressure he feels to be a leader, but starts actually becoming one once he stops "trying" to be the leader.
Roku is a great teacher and guide. He has his moments of badassery. But I stand on the fact the war is 100% Roku's fault

Aangs got about a year to master the elements and that's the thing that's gonna hang over our groups head for all 3 seasons. It's definitely a lot to put on an 11 year old, I think the show does a good job of portraying how that would affect a kid at that age.
