I was camping a block from a trucking company and watched White Frieghtliners passing everyday. I was living in homeless depression and suicidal. But I didn't want to hurt some drivers feelings by walking out in front of his truck making a turn at my tent front door. In a weird way it kept me going. This song is Townes at his best. It will never die.
I ashamed to say that those thoughts have keeped me breathing more then once. That and the thoughts someone might have if they came across a body swinging from a tree. Such tender moments for such a violent act. Good luck my friend

I was listening to Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch and I said to myself, "I want to listen to White Freight Liner Blues". Killin' two frogs with one acorn!
She has done a few covers of Townes Van Zandt. He must be one of her favorites. It's funny because both she and Townes are my favorites. I wonder if she knows she's in league with him?
CigarBox Guitar she's not in the same songwriting league as him, but when it comes to live performances, her and rawlings are pretty much perfect (though Townes live is amazing in its own right).
@MrEazyeaze ...your world is too small...imho....you don't even know what you're missing.....learning is a life long experience and one of it's greatest joys....
This is available on Dvd ... I absolutely recommend it!! I've seen these two perform live, and meet them after. They are awesome musicians, and down to earth people who welcome their fans. Go see them if you have the chance!
Of course GW & DR are great with anything they do. For an amature(?) version of this song, Smmer Evening, and OCMS "We'Are In This Thing Together", check our post by Birdman and Redwing - very cool as well.
If you haven’t already googled it, Dave plays a 1935 Epiphone Olympic. He found it in a friend’s garage/basement a few months before they recorded their first album in 1996. He started playing it for the first time on that record and it’s been his #1 guitar ever since.
@MrEazyeaze ...well then...you're on the edge of broadening your personal horizon. I'll help you get started...an ALLAGORICAL tale or song is when an artist uses a common everyday type situation or occurance and "paints" a deeper or veiled meaning within that context. Pink Floyd did this often...think "Animals" LP...also the author Jack London in his works veiled the "class struggle of humans" under the guise of the interaction between sled dogs.... ..a White Freightliner is a truck, or..?

Gillian and David sound amazing together 😃❤️🎶🎶🎶
Their music is deeply rooted in tradition, but unique and unmistakable.
David Rawlings kicks butt on that little arch-top! Amazing harmonies.

Y'all check out Molly Tuttle doing the same song.
She does a good version. Wish she had another vocalist to harmonize with her.

Think she knows he’s cheating on her with that flattop? Good god, that guitar loves him.
Almost like it was written for her to sing
Molly Tuttle's version is excellent too. And the picking blows it all away---check her out.
Lyle Lovett's is outstanding too.
Bad news from Houston, half my friends are down !
Right tempo most play to fast. Enjoy the voice, notes.
@MrEazyeaze alagorically speaking ?

Anybody know what guitar that is?
I’m fascinated with old parlor guitars . ( assuming it’s old)

..a White Freightliner is a truck, or..?
What's up with all the @ symbols instead of a's?
Dedicated to that ole trucker Joe Biden
The definive version of this song is by molly Tuttle
the "freightliner" is cocaine ....right ?
Not if you are a truck driver, son.
Only if it’s a ‘white’ freightliner, cab......& only if you’re into finding innuendos about stimulants hidden in musical lyrics....
Yup. It helped kill Townes and Fred Niel and lots of others before their time.
I LOVE THESE 2 BUT SHE SINGS FLAT AND THE GUY NEVER OQUITE MAKES IT WITH HIS GUITAR SORRY
Caps lock switch is usually at left side of kbd, yours must be stuck ON. You're welcome. No sense in yelling out such a useless comment anyway.
