    It occurs to me that, in addition to being an outstanding musician at the height of his powers, Jason Isbell is one of the most rewarding interviewees to listen to. He's smart, eloquent, thoughtful, and has a great sense of humor.

      I've been burning through Isbell interviews and am thinking about how much I'd love if he started a podcast about songwriting. Of course he may not have any interest in doing that but i'd listen to every second if he did haha

    Isbell is as good as it gets these days. He will go down as the greatest songwriter of this time. Sounds like a lot but it's true

      Matthew Mulkey ...easy to trace the great Songwriter line from Bob Dylan to John Prine right on down to Jason Isbell...

    0:00 - 3:15 - Why it's 'Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit' now, not just 'Jason Isbell'.
    3:15 - 6:45 - His childhood playing music at home, how much he plays socially now, doing what you love.
    6:45 - 8:45 - The two schools of songwriting, his editing process.
    8:45 - 10:36 - Avoiding yes men and how to take criticism.
    10:36 - 12:14 - Work ethic and David Hood's advice.
    12:14 - 13:11 - "Most people won't learn"; sobriety and success in music.
    13:11 - 17:42 - White Man's World, new conversations we haven't had in the past, "I used to think I started with nothing and I was wrong", the idea of "self made", group think.
    17:42 - 18:55 - The South and North are the same, though urban and rural are different.
    18:56 - 19:48 - An obligation to make a difference, becomes he's a father.
    19:48 - 12:30 - Steve Earle, nuance of the cowardice in Nashville
    22:30 - 24:34 - What keeps you hopeful?
    24:34 - 'Anxiety' and why it's the only song he's ever co-written.

    It is about listening and finding that gift God gave you, and live in that. You will know it by the way you feel when you do it and when you aren’t, you aren’t “right” in your world. That is your gift and it doesn’t feel like work, it is more like getting your needs met. People who live this way are successful no matter what others think.

    It is too bad that this interviewer wasted so much time on SJW stuff. It is getting so tiresome how Canadian journalists have to inject this into everything. Isbell is an amazing talent that I am sure has much else to say that would be interesting.

      Shuttt uppp lmao, musicians are fully allowed to use their platform. If content around social issues makes you uncomfortable, perhaps you should access the source of that discomfort.

    • @TheDenverOmelette
      @TheDenverOmelette 3 года назад +1

      Jason is very passionate about discussing social justice issues. Hence White Man’s World and Be Afraid and the everything else about him.

    • @andronicuscomnenus7830
      @andronicuscomnenus7830 3 года назад

      @@Birbdup Of course they are. However, this whole SJW/woke thing has become a religion or to many is merely a fashion statement. Either way, it has become very, very tedious.
