Part of the discomfort is also cognitive dissonance. New contradictory information unmoores from certainty and you are floating in uncertainty while your mind is trying to figure out what is up or down and whitch way to go to get back to a place where you can be sure of what you know. Ideally you will have encounter this feeling many times in your life to a small degree. It means you are learning something more intricate about a subject or you are trying to learn something that is just beyond your current skill. But when you have been shielded from reality or having to try something new, and a bit scary, all your life and get thrown in that the "deep end", so to speak. Well you run a serious risk of just rejecting the new information or challenge, to stay safe. Or even worse I think you might run the risk of a psychotic break. I think this is happening incredibly regularly these days when people are confronted with the demands and challenges of life. Becasue they have been sheltered from "safe" challenges and many of those "safe" challenges dont even exist anymore. And at the same time they have also been sheltered from (denied) dificult knowledge or directly mislead to think things are one way, when they might be another.
The fact that you are questioning what you have been taught shows how intelligent you truly are. Keep it up. The fact that it makes you uncomfortable yet you still watch shows how mature you are.
Indoctrination begins and ends with the educational establishments . Education starts but never ends once you leave those establishments . For some they never get past the indoctrination because they are week and see those who open their minds and learn as bigots because they themselves refuse to learn as it would mean they would have to admit they were wrong n what they were taught was wrong .

Teaching useful narratives is useful. If everyone made their own narrative, there would be many bad narratives around. Kinda like we have now. We have good narratives that help us overcome the past and build better futures, but we just aren't teaching them.

This is the path to hell paved with good intentions. Good intent in subjective. Everyone has their unique perspective, which produces opinions which suit themselves. Even if narratives are taught, they should be taught in conjunction with the direct facts and thus provoke students to understand the narrator’s perspective.

When I lived in northern Africa. i was the Pastor of an International Church. One of our members from Ghana first told me that most African slaves were sold into slavery by others in their own country. This young man uncovered this looking at the heritage of his own country.
It's true. The transatlantic slave trade, where European slave traders took slaves from Africa to America, was indeed a trade in all countries involved. African leaders quickly realised that they could benefit from this continuing need for slaves and so they had slaves, taken in tribal wars, etc, ready and waiting in cages near the beaches waiting for the slave ships to arrive, who were then traded for European goods. That saved the traders vital time and kept them free of malaria and other risks involved in going into the interior and taking slaves themselves..

I was in elementary school in Detroit in the 60s and took the first ever Black History classes that were taught. The teacher that taught those classes was an older Black woman. She not only taught classes with more insight then the books gave, she also encouraged us to use the Libraries to learn on our own. She gave us names of historical people to look up, authors whose books we should read and most importantly, do not take anyone's word on a subject that you care about to be fact, research it yourself. You will often find that the truth is uncomfortable.

Just came across this video in my RUclips feed, and wanted to take a few minutes to comment. 1. Its very nice to see a young man trying to figure out "Truths'" vs "Fiction" for himself. That is AWESOME!! 2. Much of this information presented here was from one of the Great "Thinkers" of our time. Thomas Sowell. Mr Sowell went to Harvard, Columbia and the University of Chicago. Not to mention being on Faculties at Cornell, Amherst, Brandeis and UCLA, not to mention Stanford. 3. You asked why didn't I learn this in school? Why is there a narrative? Think about this very closely. Look at all that has happened over the past 100 yrs in the USA (used as an example). Would the NAACP, BLM, etc even be around if certain "Truths" were actually taught in schools? I once heard someone say many years ago "Follow The Money". 4. Lastly, for all these "Truths" that people like Thomas Sowell provide not only with historical facts, but show evidence and documentation of said facts get labelled as an "Uncle Tom". The ones that call people like Thomas Sowell an "Uncle Tom" are being part of the Problem to why prejudice, hate and discrimination still exist in this country. Because "their narrative" has a current political objective. Just because physical slavery is gone and those who lived it are all dead and buried, doesn't mean a distorted version of that past can't be used for current political advantage.

They hated the government for having the war and after finishing useless degrees became teachers and government employees. They had learned liberalism and protest and began to perfect it.

I am 70 and when I went to school I was taught to find information I needed. Today you are living in a world where information is so easily available that I do not know why people just automatically believe what they are told. I was taught to question the source when at school. I am not saying that I found everything, but I also did not just believe what I was told because a teacher said it. To back up information I had to find where that information came from and decide if it was reliable. As I got older I started to look at why a person would give me this misinformation and their motives. My first two questions when I get new information now is "WHY DID YOU TELL ME THAT" and "WHERE DID YOU GET THAT INFORMATION FROM". I applaud you for searching, as so many people just believe the lies and are manipulated by other people agendas.
so glad i had the teachers I had. They would tell me this is the world view and this is my view on this issue. We were never confused on what was fact and what was opinion. My teachers made sure of we knew the difference.
@@billythedog-309 Sure and let's not forget that when slavery in Britian was abolished in 1857 there were an estimated 15,000 African slaves living there including slaves own by the Anglican Church. When the slaves were freed the slave OWNERS WERE COMPENSATED for giving up their property!!! Some sort of reverse reparations, I guess. 😒 In spite of slavery being abolished in England (and its territories), British slave ships went on unimpeded trading slaves for sugar and cotton in the Americas and Western Australia until 1865 (the end of the American Civil War). Also, indentured servitude and transportation continued well into the early 20th century. In fact, one of the reasons the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln was to keep Britian out of the war when the price of cotton the Brits were getting from the southern states skyrocketed. But it turned out not to be a problem because they began growing cotton in their other territories. The sub-continent and Indochina which they enslaved... oops no, I mean "gently occupied" until the British Raj was dissolved IN 1945!!! So yes! Let us not forget the role Britian played in imposing its will and setting an example for the rest of the world by ending its imperialist colonial regimes (mostly) by the 1950s. 🤨

You could sell yourself or your family into slavery to pay for your debts. Mostly it was not for life, but only for the period of time it took to pay those debts - so a lot of european immigrants to America payed their passage with some years of servitude

The video he was watching was pushing its own narrative as well. It acts as if Europeans were just innocent bystanders who treated everyone with respect, and it was only Africans that tortured and traumatized slaves. This obviously ignores the true and horrendous way Europeans treated slaves after they arrived in America and long after the slave trade from Africa ended. I'm not even sure what he was getting at near the end, but pretty much every country ended slavery with an abolition movement. America was only unique in that it resulted in a war. And that's mostly because the South still benefited greatly from Slavery while the North did not, but the North took it upon themselves as a moral issue. But let's be frank, The fact that it took thousands of years to abolish human ownership of humans is despicable. It doesn't matter who owned who, people should have risen up to fight against slavery long long long before the 18th and 19th centuries. Another narrative, racism is a sentiment that arose from and outlasted slavery. This ignores all the other forms of racism than just against African Americans. Look at antisemitism... in every time and culture, outrage over Latin asylum seekers lately, 19th century hatred of Chinese and breaking of Native American treaties, even Italians and Irish in were hated at one time in the US. Racism is the mental justification of our animalistic fear of people who look, talk, and act differently than what we are used to. Demagogues use this to manipulate people into supporting them politically. Racism was used to justify slavery, not the other way around. It's still used today (not for slavery). Basically, from what I can tell, the purpose of this video (or at least the way most people seem to be interpreting it in the comments) is to convince everyone that Racism isn't real anymore, the legacy isn't harmful anymore, there is no systemic preference to one race over another, and any efforts to correct the disparity between races is misguided and ignorant SJW nonsense... It was mentioned that slavery was at some point almost everywhere in the world, also in Europe. But slavery was not based on race. I’m Slavic European and even the term slave originated from the name of my ethnic group which is as white and European as you can be. Bad treatment of slaves accrued sometimes, also in Europe and in western civilization in general, but it was extremely rare. Usually slaves were treated good because they costed a lot and they were useful only when in good shape. From today’s perspective it might look bad that someone might be someone else’s possession, but the truth is that life of slaves in for example United States were usually better than their life back home in Africa. Another thing you are wrong about is that you confuse racism with xenophobia. Sometimes even with prejudice, generalization and even with simple precaution. I have impression that in today’s western civilization the only racism that left is directed towards white people. It is hard to find any white or asian people that would care about the race or skin color, but there is plenty black people that anything they talk about is the race and skin color. There are special places only for black people, schools only for black people, they are given more points at the start in some recruitment procedures also in some universities. They are privileged group based solely on their race/ skin color. If that’s not racism than there’s no such thing as racism at all.

I love seeing any young person not afraid to have an open mind or at least open to hearing a different opinion then they are used to. There is a trend today to immediately shut down any opinion that doesn't go along with the mainstream narrative. Putting yourself out there and not being uncomfortable about what you don't know, is a mark of intelligence but also takes a lot of bravery so I applaud you for making this video. Best learning tool I ever got was from an engineer with a statement and couple of simple questions. They did this 100 years ago. Were they smarter than me? How did they do it? Solving the second question opens up all sorts of knowledge.

As a teacher, it is tough teaching about slavery. It’s February, Black History Month, so I make sure to incorporate this into my art lessons. A student said that their teacher told them only black people were slaves. I said, “not so!” An indignant😂 chorus of “but she said…” began. I knew a lot of them were religious, so I asked if anyone had ever heard of the Bible. “Duh!!” Me. “Have you ever heard of Moses?” Them: “Duh!!” Me: What did Moses do? Them: He led the Israelites out of Egypt.” Me: Why? Them: because…oooOOoooh!

Virtually everyone in academia today has an agenda, and you're one of a very small few who have the self awareness to challenge that agenda. Never stop asking questions and learning, you're on the right path to being a truly mature person.
The problem with history is there's so much of it. You simply can't teach everything. Historians go on to get PhDs focusing on ONE ASPECT of history. You could spend 12 years in primary school learning all about the slave trade and not only not get every detail, but you'd not learn any other history at all. I'm not saying they've done a great job, but schools have to narrow down their focus, and Americans don't learn much about European slavery because we're Americans, and they teach what's more relevant. But yes, they could have a section in history class on slavery, spend 90% on American slavery, and just one or two classes on this kind of thing, too.
He is on a horrible path if he thinks that this presentationis "information" an dnot the best example of (pseudo)historians having an agenda. And history is asking questions that lead to a narrative..like Why did people do X or how we look at X what caused X? Whose fault was X? What effect did X had on Y? So..its almost impossible to teach history without framing it in some form of narrative...because dealing with raw data (the thing that historians do every day) makes normal people fall asleep before you can count to ten...and the amount would require schools to only teach history. So for pure practical reasons you sort out. It is good to look at different narraratives to get the whole story..but those who present themselves as some form of hidden truth are usually the ones most driven by agendas.
@@azureyamu7652 There is a reason that schools pass people for failing these days when they used to be held back to re-learn what they could not learn in one year. Now they just pass kids to the next year while they never learn the tools they needed to learn the next year's material, which in turn leaves them without the tools for the next, snowballing incompetence until they make it to the outside world.
One of the things you learn as a history major is that there is so much information that it has no meaning in isolation. EVERY historian has to interpret to some degree. EVERY historian "creates a narrative". The best historians create a narrative that is closer to objective truth, whatever that is. And every historian is a product of his own time, creating an interpretation that has some meaning to his audience. Ideally, history informs the present, and allows us to make wise decisions about our actions today that have consequences in the future. History that we do not perceive as relevant to the problems that we face today is often ignored, sometimes to our peril.
Some people would rather remain ignorant. Most people here haven't read the Mueller Report or watched the January 6 Hearings. They would rather cry about it being fake even though they don't know anything about it.

I have a master's degree in history. I just want to say this: I commend you for facing history uncomfortably. Being willing to challenge your own beliefs and understandings is a mark of great integrity. It doesn't necessarily mean you accept the new data nor that you reject it. Analyze it with integrity and defend what you find to be correct and true. I also commend you for saying that you needed to look up some of the data. That's how history is done well.

The Kingdom of Kongo, spelled with a "K," on the west coast of Africa, is what you see on maps from the mid-19th into the early 20th century. Congo, with a " C" is a post-Belgian-colonial spelling applied to one of two specific modern countries that occupy most of the land the Kingdom of Kongo once held. Whites did, in fact, participate directly in the slave trade there, both as buyers and capturers. Further north in the Kingdom of Dahomey and surrounding regions, where most Atlantic slave trade slaves came from, whites were only buyers, usually taking slaves in trade for arms and munitions and some manufactured goods. Now, go get educated. You'll not only look more intelligent, but you will actually be better informed.

In the Caribbean, this was taught. After relocating to the States, I encouraged people to learn more about history. It seems that no one is interested in learning. This is one of the reasons why people from other countries view history extremely differently from black Americans who live in the US.

I remember in 1990-1991 I was in the 4th grade we had a substitute teacher. She was a nice old black lady from the south. She told us “the school history books don’t tell u everything. That back in the days blacks in the south fought in the civil war to keep slavery around.” She was there for one day & we never got to see her again after that. I'm 59, white British and the way I was taught history at school was abysmal. We spent years "learning" about the Tudors and very little else. Nearly all of us found history boring. Looking back, we couldn't relate to kings and queens, explorers finding potatoes and cloaks on puddles. We never learned anything to do with the common people. The lives and struggles of the lower classes, the ancestors of most of us, were simply ignored. I've always said that I learned far more history from television than I ever did at school.

One very good teacher said I can only have time to give you the basic information, and make some reading suggestions, but it's up to you to continue to expand on what you have learned here. @@christinemontano6607 I guess you have never done a research paper. When writing a research paper, you use several sources. Primary source and secondary sources. Primary sources are things like diaries, ledgers, essentially things from the time you are researching. Secondary sources are journal articles from scholarly sources, primarily from experts in that particular field. Thomas Sowell would have to use these types of sources to write his books. He isn’t going to do the same research as other researchers did as that would be redundant. He won’t do the same exact research another person did as that would be a waste of time and effort. So he’d use the original researchers work and properly quote them. 🙂👍

Today’s slavery has transformed from physical ownership of humans to economic ownership of others. There is still physical slavery, but as part of our total pop, it is less than 1%. The strong still enslave the weak in an economic sense on a much broader and deeper scale. I am not sure it can be remedied other than to educate the weak and help them obtain skills to reduce their reliance on the strong to provide goods and services that seem necessary.

A hundred years ago, a kind of slavery was still present in the Netherlands due to the large class difference. As a day laborer you were kind of the property of Big Farmers, large land owners and sometimes nobility. You saw this a lot in the eastern part of our country. My father experienced having to sit at the back of class and church because he came from a certain environment (this was around 1955).
My wife is from the Balkan region, which comprises countries along the Balkan mountain range, she gets really angry and upset when people come at her about slavery and tell her she has white privilege/should be ashamed of her ancestors actions etc. People in the Balkans would throw their children off cliffs and down wells then jump themselves to avoid being captured by the Ottomans. Slavery is a crime against humanity not a single race and no race has the right to claim sole victim status, all are guilty of it's practice and all have fallen victim to it. Sadly this is just one topic that the US education system has corrupted and manipulated to cause division and tension. From everything I see in the media the US loves to pretend everything is binary, black and white, us vs them, ironically, with the sole exception of gender and even that exists purely to fuel division. Nothing in history is black and white, even in terrible times like WW2 there were victims on all sides, aggressors on all sides, criminals and murderers everywhere. Recorded history is painted by the victor, the subject of history is meant to take the accounts of all sides and find something closer to the truth. It is never 100% accurate because all sides believe in their own narrative, understanding that is the first thing we learned in History class (not in the US). History is subject to change as new information disproves old. A true historian must be flexible and willing to accept an ever changing narrative that must not be shaped to align to your own. I would not want my kid going to school in the US. The narratives are ALL skewed and designed to cause polarization, division and resentment between different groups. I find it tragic that so few people inside the US can see they are being manipulated. In a time when we all need to come together, build on common ground and work toward a better future the US seems to be doing everything it can to spread division, resentment and hatred. Instead of finding common ground and standing up for causes that benefit everyone these groups fight for supremacy over their opposition and benefit no one, not even themselves. Self destructive fanaticism reigns.

Dave Chappelle talked about part of this in his last special. A black slave in the american South who was freed and given land by his white owner. Was such a good farmer he saved his money and bought some slaves. He became one of the most brutal slave owners in his area.

Some complementary information: 1) Blacks in antiquity were considered sacred and the favorite race of the Olympian gods. 2) Slaves in antiquity were provided mainly by war with an enemy neighboring state, So, to avoid revolts and espionage by the enemy state these slaves were displaced or sold far away and replaced by equally displaced other slaves. So there was some kind of racism in slavery but it was based on real political and military issues 3) With the ethnic revolts in the Balkans against the Turks white slavery was widespread. These people too were displaced, mainly sold in North Africa.

I’m coming 82, white great grandmother, went to school in the 40’s and 50’s. They taught us a lot of this back then in 4th, 5th! And 7th grades. I was very surprised it wasn’t taught to my children, who were in school in1966 to early 80’s. (Grade school and high school.) It is good for anyone to bring the truth to light in any matter but the problem most today do not care and already have their minds made up. Essentially they follow authority and the information given to them by it no matter if it is true or not. Most people have come to want to hate, be "victims", and always point the finger not care about what reality and the truth are. Sorry to say but those times are gone and it didn't seem to take very long either which explains easily and shows the case of Nazi Germany and how so many went along with it that people just could not comprehend before while now we're literally living the beginning stages of it and or I believe something ultimately much worse because the division is spread throughout every part if society possible not just race but sex, class, age, health, and the list goes on. I'm a 74 year old white, Australian male. Obviously, I'm not a great grandmother 😉. I might get into trouble for using the word "obviously" in this sentence. I have a small advantage in that I went to primary school in England, Pakistan, England again, Germany, and then back to England at age 9. I had also visited India, Egypt, Aden, South Africa and the Canary Islands (Spain). By the time I went to university in England, I had spent school holidays in Malaysia and was used to flying between England and Germany. The main thing, though, is that we were taught history and geography in primary and secondary school and I paid attention. I continue to be distressed by the stunning lack of knowledge of young people these days and the lies they are taught. I was taught vectors in maths at age 10. It made perfect sense because I could sail and I knew about apparent and true wind directions and how they related to the boat's velocity. I don't think that they cover that in primary school these days. Jojo seems to be a lovely and intelligent young man with a questioning mind. I really hope that people encourage him.

Growing up in the 80's - 90's, my teachers taught these facts with the following statement: "The books don't teach you this anymore, but I want you to know the truth, so that you grow up right." I’m 48 and was reared in the 80’s and early 90’s. I wasn’t taught any of this history. It wasn’t until I went to college in the early 2,000’s that my history professor touched on the historical facts about slavery.

What is the difficult truth? That humans enslaved each other? He had a poor education. All of this information is readily available. What is also true is that the invention of "race" was used to justify the unique horrific nature of chattel slavery in the Americas. No one 1000 years ago considered himself to be white or black or Asian, etc. Look at the results. The Nazis based their racial laws on America's Jim Crow laws. Prior to that, Brazil's slavery was a giant meat grinder that readily worked enslaved Africans to death. In the US, we have cynical politicians that censor history on penalty of imprisonment in some states.

I learned much of this in high school in the early 1980s. I don't know what happened to our schools not teaching history, but I can tell you that my grandfather, who was very well read and researched everything, always said that socialism and communism would only be able to infiltrate democracy through the education system. He could see changes happening when my uncle was in college. I didn't get it then, but I do now! Divide the people, make them dependent on the government, slowly take away freedom. Sound familiar?

I learned much of this in high school in the 70s. While the US is staying in the middle, the two choices for which direction to move in are toward oligarchy and recreating the Guilded Age, or toward socialism. One party wants to cut medicare and social security, the other party wants to expand them. On party consistently reduces taxes on the rich, the other party want to increase taxes on those making over $1M/yr. One party historically runs up the debt more. Look at debt increases during Republican Presidents vs Democratic Presidents. The last time the debt went down was under Clinton, and one of Bush's first actions was to cut taxes "to increase the debt". One party want to increase handout for large corporations, the other wants to increase protections for workers and unions. One party wants to make it hard for small businesses to provide health insurance to employees and also wants to keep health insurance tied to corporations. The other party wants to make health care universal and has already provided a way for people who are not corporate employees to get health insurance. One party wants to keep employees with sick relatives locked into their current corporate employer, the other party already passed laws requiring insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions. Reagan implemented free health care for all by dictating that hospital emergency rooms can't turn anyone away. The Democrats want to get rid of the greedy insurance companies, make health care available for all citizens, and spread the cost fairly. Do you want to be dependent on government, or on corporations and oligarchs? John Steinbach and Upton Sinclair wrote many books about the horrors of business owners having complete contol over employee's lives. The song "You load 15 tons, what do you get" is another story from that era. We've had corporate control during the Giulded Era. It didn't work out for us and we should stop trying to go back.

I teach all of this to my classes in high school. I don’t shy away from the real history. The idea in my classroom is that if history doesn’t make you uncomfortable then what you’re studying isn’t history.

Part of the discomfort is also cognitive dissonance. New contradictory information unmoores from certainty and you are floating in uncertainty while your mind is trying to figure out what is up or down and whitch way to go to get back to a place where you can be sure of what you know.
Ideally you will have encounter this feeling many times in your life to a small degree. It means you are learning something more intricate about a subject or you are trying to learn something that is just beyond your current skill.
But when you have been shielded from reality or having to try something new, and a bit scary, all your life and get thrown in that the "deep end", so to speak. Well you run a serious risk of just rejecting the new information or challenge, to stay safe.
Or even worse I think you might run the risk of a psychotic break. I think this is happening incredibly regularly these days when people are confronted with the demands and challenges of life. Becasue they have been sheltered from "safe" challenges and many of those "safe" challenges dont even exist anymore. And at the same time they have also been sheltered from (denied) dificult knowledge or directly mislead to think things are one way, when they might be another.

Indoctrination begins and ends with the educational establishments . Education starts but never ends once you leave those establishments . We have good narratives that help us overcome the past and build better futures, but we just aren't teaching them.

When I lived in northern Africa. i was the Pastor of an International Church. One of our members from Ghana first told me that most African slaves were sold into slavery by others in their own country. This young man uncovered this looking at the heritage of his own country.
It's true. The transatlantic slave trade, where European slave traders took slaves from Africa to America, was indeed a trade in all countries involved. African leaders quickly realised that they could benefit from this continuing need for slaves and so they had slaves, taken in tribal wars, etc, ready and waiting in cages near the beaches waiting for the slave ships to arrive, who were then traded for European goods. That saved the traders vital time and kept them free of malaria and other risks involved in going into the interior and taking slaves themselves..

I was in elementary school in Detroit in the 60s and took the first ever Black History classes that were taught. The teacher that taught those classes was an older Black woman. She not only taught classes with more insight then the books gave, she also encouraged us to use the Libraries to learn on our own. She gave us names of historical people to look up, authors whose books we should read and most importantly, do not take anyone's word on a subject that you care about to be fact, research it yourself.

That is AWESOME!! 2. Much of this information presented here was from one of the Great "Thinkers" of our time. Thomas Sowell. Mr Sowell went to Harvard, Columbia and the University of Chicago. Not to mention being on Faculties at Cornell, Amherst, Brandeis and UCLA, not to mention Stanford. 3. You asked why didn't I learn this in school? Why is there a narrative? Think about this very closely. Look at all that has happened over the past 100 yrs in the USA (used as an example). Would the NAACP, BLM, etc even be around if certain "Truths" were actually taught in schools? I once heard someone say many years ago "Follow The Money". 4. Lastly, for all these "Truths" that people like Thomas Sowell provide not only with historical facts, but show evidence and documentation of said facts get labelled as an "Uncle Tom". The ones that call people like Thomas Sowell an "Uncle Tom" are being part of the Problem to why prejudice, hate and discrimination still exist in this country. They hated the government for having the war and after finishing useless degrees became teachers and government employees. They had learned liberalism and protest and began to perfect it.

People work for little money (can't exactly call it a living wage), little to no free time, and if you dare to ask for it, you're "a lazy worker"; also, why do you think the tip cult(ure) is going so strong in the States? Is it because those people are getting paid enough at their place of employment? And do they actually care about the employees when they get sick or do they threaten to fire or actually fire them? I am 70 and when I went to school I was taught to find information I needed. Today you are living in a world where information is so easily available that I do not know why people just automatically believe what they are told. I was taught to question the source when at school. I am not saying that I found everything, but I also did not just believe what I was told because a teacher said it. To back up information I had to find where that information came from and decide if it was reliable. As I got older I started to look at why a person would give me this misinformation and their motives. My first two questions when I get new information now is "WHY DID YOU TELL ME THAT" and "WHERE DID YOU GET THAT INFORMATION FROM". I applaud you for searching, as so many people just believe the lies and are manipulated by other people agendas.

In spite of slavery being abolished in England (and its territories), British slave ships went on unimpeded trading slaves for sugar and cotton in the Americas and Western Australia until 1865 (the end of the American Civil War). Also, indentured servitude and transportation continued well into the early 20th century.
In fact, one of the reasons the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln was to keep Britian out of the war when the price of cotton the Brits were getting from the southern states skyrocketed. But it turned out not to be a problem because they began growing cotton in their other territories. The sub-continent and Indochina which they enslaved... oops no, I mean "gently occupied" until the British Raj was dissolved IN 1945!!!
So yes! Let us not forget the role Britian played in imposing its will and setting an example for the rest of the world by ending its imperialist colonial regimes (mostly) by the 1950s. 🤨

Humans can do terrible things to each other - slavery is somewhat "kinder" than outright killing. You could sell yourself or your family into slavery to pay for your debts.
Mostly it was not for life, but only for the period of time it took to pay those debts - so a lot of european immigrants to America payed their passage with some years of servitude
The "why" is that there has to be some selection of facts, and any selection implies a narrative. "There is no view from nowhere."

we were slaves for more than 500 years. we were the first to put in law that every man who steps foot on Serbia ground is a free man. Otomans ( Turkish envaders) took our children to train them for their military so the basicaly made an army who would fight their own people ( we called the day they take kids Blood day), they had the right of the first wedding night (if you get married they had the right to take virginity of the bride)...

The video he was watching was pushing its own narrative as well.
It acts as if Europeans were just innocent bystanders who treated everyone with respect, and it was only Africans that tortured and traumatized slaves. This obviously ignores the true and horrendous way Europeans treated slaves after they arrived in America and long after the slave trade from Africa ended.
I'm not even sure what he was getting at near the end, but pretty much every country ended slavery with an abolition movement. America was only unique in that it resulted in a war. And that's mostly because the South still benefited greatly from Slavery while the North did not, but the North took it upon themselves as a moral issue. But let's be frank, The fact that it took thousands of years to abolish human ownership of humans is despicable. It doesn't matter who owned who, people should have risen up to fight against slavery long long long before the 18th and 19th centuries.
Another narrative, racism is a sentiment that arose from and outlasted slavery. This ignores all the other forms of racism than just against African Americans. Look at antisemitism... in every time and culture, outrage over Latin asylum seekers lately, 19th century hatred of Chinese and breaking of Native American treaties, even Italians and Irish in were hated at one time in the US. Racism is the mental justification of our animalistic fear of people who look, talk, and act differently than what we are used to. Demagogues use this to manipulate people into supporting them politically. Racism was used to justify slavery, not the other way around. It's still used today (not for slavery).
Basically, from what I can tell, the purpose of this video (or at least the way most people seem to be interpreting it in the comments) is to convince everyone that Racism isn't real anymore, the legacy isn't harmful anymore, there is no systemic preference to one race over another, and any efforts to correct the disparity between races is misguided and ignorant SJW nonsense... So take this whole video with a grain of salt too (just as you do your education) because there are real problems with how Black people are treated in the United States today and they can't be fixed by pretending they don't exist.

It was mentioned that slavery was at some point almost everywhere in the world, also in Europe. But slavery was not based on race. I’m Slavic European and even the term slave originated from the name of my ethnic group which is as white and European as you can be. Bad treatment of slaves accrued sometimes, also in Europe and in western civilization in general, but it was extremely rare. Usually slaves were treated good because they costed a lot and they were useful only when in good shape. From today’s perspective it might look bad that someone might be someone else’s possession, but the truth is that life of slaves in for example United States were usually better than their life back home in Africa. Another thing you are wrong about is that you confuse racism with xenophobia. Sometimes even with prejudice, generalization and even with simple precaution. I have impression that in today’s western civilization the only racism that left is directed towards white people. It is hard to find any white or asian people that would care about the race or skin color, but there is plenty black people that anything they talk about is the race and skin color. There are special places only for black people, schools only for black people, they are given more points at the start in some recruitment procedures also in some universities. They are privileged group based solely on their race/ skin color. If that’s not racism than there’s no such thing as racism at all.

Perhaps some slaves were treated well, sure. Most slaves were treated poorly, and some very horrifically. That goes for all slaves through all time not just African slaves in recent times. It's well documented, but maybe you didn't learn that because "they" don't want you to know the truth... The problem with history is there's so much of it. You simply can't teach everything. Historians go on to get PhDs focusing on ONE ASPECT of history. You could spend 12 years in primary school learning all about the slave trade and not only not get every detail, but you'd not learn any other history at all. I'm not saying they've done a great job, but schools have to narrow down their focus, and Americans don't learn much about European slavery because we're Americans, and they teach what's more relevant.
But yes, they could have a section in history class on slavery, spend 90% on American slavery, and just one or two classes on this kind of thing, too.

And history is asking questions that lead to a narrative..like Why did people do X or how we look at X what caused X? Whose fault was X? What effect did X had on Y?
So..its almost impossible to teach history without framing it in some form of narrative...because dealing with raw data (the thing that historians do every day) makes normal people fall asleep before you can count to ten...and the amount would require schools to only teach history. So for pure practical reasons you sort out. It is good to look at different narraratives to get the whole story..but those who present themselves as some form of hidden truth are usually the ones most driven by agendas.

One of the things you learn as a history major is that there is so much information that it has no meaning in isolation. EVERY historian has to interpret to some degree. EVERY historian "creates a narrative". The best historians create a narrative that is closer to objective truth, whatever that is. And every historian is a product of his own time, creating an interpretation that has some meaning to his audience.
Ideally, history informs the present, and allows us to make wise decisions about our actions today that have consequences in the future. History that we do not perceive as relevant to the problems that we face today is often ignored, sometimes to our peril.

I have a master's degree in history. I just want to say this: I commend you for facing history uncomfortably. Being willing to challenge your own beliefs and understandings is a mark of great integrity. It doesn't necessarily mean you accept the new data nor that you reject it. Analyze it with integrity and defend what you find to be correct and true. I also commend you for saying that you needed to look up some of the data. That's how history is done well.

Congo, with a " C" is a post-Belgian-colonial spelling applied to one of two specific modern countries that occupy most of the land the Kingdom of Kongo once held. Whites did, in fact, participate directly in the slave trade there, both as buyers and capturers. Further north in the Kingdom of Dahomey and surrounding regions, where most Atlantic slave trade slaves came from, whites were only buyers, usually taking slaves in trade for arms and munitions and some manufactured goods.

I'm 59, white British and the way I was taught history at school was abysmal. We spent years "learning" about the Tudors and very little else. Nearly all of us found history boring. Looking back, we couldn't relate to kings and queens, explorers finding potatoes and cloaks on puddles. We never learned anything to do with the common people. The lives and struggles of the lower classes, the ancestors of most of us, were simply ignored. I've always said that I learned far more history from television than I ever did at school.
Absolutely! I went to a good school and we were taught to use our reasoning skills. One very good teacher said I can only have time to give you the basic information, and make some reading suggestions, but it's up to you to continue to expand on what you have learned here. Learning never stops at the classroom door.

@@christinemontano6607 I guess you have never done a research paper. When writing a research paper, you use several sources. Primary source and secondary sources. Primary sources are things like diaries, ledgers, essentially things from the time you are researching. Secondary sources are journal articles from scholarly sources, primarily from experts in that particular field. Thomas Sowell would have to use these types of sources to write his books. He isn’t going to do the same research as other researchers did as that would be redundant. He won’t do the same exact research another person did as that would be a waste of time and effort. So he’d use the original researchers work and properly quote them. 🙂👍

Today’s slavery has transformed from physical ownership of humans to economic ownership of others. There is still physical slavery, but as part of our total pop, it is less than 1%. The strong still enslave the weak in an economic sense on a much broader and deeper scale. I am not sure it can be remedied other than to educate the weak and help them obtain skills to reduce their reliance on the strong to provide goods and services that seem necessary.

A hundred years ago, a kind of slavery was still present in the Netherlands due to the large class difference. As a day laborer you were kind of the property of Big Farmers, large land owners and sometimes nobility. You saw this a lot in the eastern part of our country. My father experienced having to sit at the back of class and church because he came from a certain environment (this was around 1955).
My wife is from the Balkan region, which comprises countries along the Balkan mountain range, she gets really angry and upset when people come at her about slavery and tell her she has white privilege/should be ashamed of her ancestors actions etc. People in the Balkans would throw their children off cliffs and down wells then jump themselves to avoid being captured by the Ottomans. Slavery is a crime against humanity not a single race and no race has the right to claim sole victim status, all are guilty of it's practice and all have fallen victim to it.
Sadly this is just one topic that the US education system has corrupted and manipulated to cause division and tension. From everything I see in the media the US loves to pretend everything is binary, black and white, us vs them, ironically, with the sole exception of gender and even that exists purely to fuel division. Nothing in history is black and white, even in terrible times like WW2 there were victims on all sides, aggressors on all sides, criminals and murderers everywhere. Recorded history is painted by the victor, the subject of history is meant to take the accounts of all sides and find something closer to the truth. It is never 100% accurate because all sides believe in their own narrative, understanding that is the first thing we learned in History class (not in the US). History is subject to change as new information disproves old. A true historian must be flexible and willing to accept an ever changing narrative that must not be shaped to align to your own.
I would not want my kid going to school in the US. The narratives are ALL skewed and designed to cause polarization, division and resentment between different groups. I find it tragic that so few people inside the US can see they are being manipulated. In a time when we all need to come together, build on common ground and work toward a better future the US seems to be doing everything it can to spread division, resentment and hatred. Instead of finding common ground and standing up for causes that benefit everyone these groups fight for supremacy over their opposition and benefit no one, not even themselves. Self destructive fanaticism reigns.

Dave Chappelle talked about part of this in his last special. A black slave in the american South who was freed and given land by his white owner. Was such a good farmer he saved his money and bought some slaves. He became one of the most brutal slave owners in his area.

Some complementary information:
1) Blacks in antiquity were considered sacred and the favorite race of the Olympian gods.
2) Slaves in antiquity were provided mainly by war with an enemy neighboring state, So, to avoid revolts and espionage by the enemy state these slaves were displaced or sold far away and replaced by equally displaced other slaves. So there was some kind of racism in slavery but it was based on real political and military issues
3) With the ethnic revolts in the Balkans against the Turks white slavery was widespread. These people too were displaced, mainly sold in North Africa.

I’m coming 82, white great grandmother, went to school in the 40’s and 50’s. They taught us a lot of this back then in 4th, 5th! And 7th grades. I was very surprised it wasn’t taught to my children, who were in school in1966 to early 80’s. (Grade school and high school.) It is good for anyone to bring the truth to light in any matter but the problem most today do not care and already have their minds made up. Essentially they follow authority and the information given to them by it no matter if it is true or not. Most people have come to want to hate, be "victims", and always point the finger not care about what reality and the truth are. Sorry to say but those times are gone and it didn't seem to take very long either which explains easily and shows the case of Nazi Germany and how so many went along with it that people just could not comprehend before while now we're literally living the beginning stages of it and or I believe something ultimately much worse because the division is spread throughout every part if society possible not just race but sex, class, age, health, and the list goes on. Everything is being set against all that is truly moral and good ultimately.
I'm a 74 year old white, Australian male. Obviously, I'm not a great grandmother 😉. I might get into trouble for using the word "obviously" in this sentence. I have a small advantage in that I went to primary school in England, Pakistan, England again, Germany, and then back to England at age 9. I had also visited India, Egypt, Aden, South Africa and the Canary Islands (Spain). By the time I went to university in England, I had spent school holidays in Malaysia and was used to flying between England and Germany. The main thing, though, is that we were taught history and geography in primary and secondary school and I paid attention. I continue to be distressed by the stunning lack of knowledge of young people these days and the lies they are taught.
I was taught vectors in maths at age 10. It made perfect sense because I could sail and I knew about apparent and true wind directions and how they related to the boat's velocity. I don't think that they cover that in primary school these days.

What is the difficult truth? That humans enslaved each other? He had a poor education. All of this information is readily available. What is also true is that the invention of "race" was used to justify the unique horrific nature of chattel slavery in the Americas.
No one 1000 years ago considered himself to be white or black or Asian, etc. Look at the results. The Nazis based their racial laws on America's Jim Crow laws. Prior to that, Brazil's slavery was a giant meat grinder that readily worked enslaved Africans to death. In the US, we have cynical politicians that censor history on penalty of imprisonment in some states.

I learned much of this in high school in the early 1980s. I don't know what happened to our schools not teaching history, but I can tell you that my grandfather, who was very well read and researched everything, always said that socialism and communism would only be able to infiltrate democracy through the education system. He could see changes happening when my uncle was in college. I didn't get it then, but I do now! Divide the people, make them dependent on the government, slowly take away freedom. Sound familiar?

While the US is staying in the middle, the two choices for which direction to move in are toward oligarchy and recreating the Guilded Age, or toward socialism.
One party wants to cut medicare and social security, the other party wants to expand them.
On party consistently reduces taxes on the rich, the other party want to increase taxes on those making over $1M/yr.
One party historically runs up the debt more. Look at debt increases during Republican Presidents vs Democratic Presidents. The last time the debt went down was under Clinton, and one of Bush's first actions was to cut taxes "to increase the debt".
One party want to increase handout for large corporations, the other wants to increase protections for workers and unions.
One party wants to make it hard for small businesses to provide health insurance to employees and also wants to keep health insurance tied to corporations. The other party wants to make health care universal and has already provided a way for people who are not corporate employees to get health insurance.
One party wants to keep employees with sick relatives locked into their current corporate employer, the other party already passed laws requiring insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions.
Reagan implemented free health care for all by dictating that hospital emergency rooms can't turn anyone away. The Democrats want to get rid of the greedy insurance companies, make health care available for all citizens, and spread the cost fairly.

John Steinbach and Upton Sinclair wrote many books about the horrors of business owners having complete contol over employee's lives. The song "You load 15 tons, what do you get" is another story from that era. We've had corporate control during the Giulded Era. It didn't work out for us and we should stop trying to go back.

I teach all of this to my classes in high school. I don’t shy away from the real history. The idea in my classroom is that if history doesn’t make you uncomfortable then what you’re studying isn’t history.
