People who were never slaves are demanding compensation from people who never owned slaves. Worse, some of the people demanding compensation had ancestors who were willing participants of the slave trade and profited from it. Others, are descendants of slaves and find themselves lumped in with the slave owners by virtue of their skin colour. I can honestly say that the only person I know who really was a slave at one time, was my great aunt who spent several years in a gulag for the crime of being a member of a defeated nation.
I want to know when colonial American forces invaded Africa in order to procure slaves to work in the colonies or afterwards in the United States! Were black residents of Africa waiting on the shore to be captured and shipped to the United States? The great majority of slaves were imprisoned in our southern states and by large enterprise plantations and farms. Would reparations be limited descendants of those enterprises? Descendants of abolitionists would also be asked to pay? Former President Obama’s lineage was part white. Do we attach his wealth or give him a mixed race discount . What about whites such as Sandra Bullock or Angelina Jolie who adopted black children would be taxed by disregarding their good deeds! Roy Rodgers and his wife Dale Evans who adopted Downs kids during the 1950’s ? Are their descendants allowed a discount for saving children from a lifetime in institutions. My great great grandmother sold her infant child (my great grandfather) as an indentured servant to people who lived on a farm in Kansas. This was like slavery as the money received for his back-breaking work from sun-up to sun-down would never be as much as the cost to house and feed him. He thus never would have gotten out of debt. These people adopted him, and even changed his birth name, but he said he never felt love from them. It was a pure money transaction, and race had nothing to do with it!! So, when he was in his late teens, he took the chance. He ran away, jumped on trains, and got a job at the 1903 NYC World Fair. My great grandfather was white, and he never stepped foot in Kansas again.
Mr. Thomas Sowell said that no one will bother ask North Africa for reparations as they know that no one there is fool to pay it to them. VERY WELL SAID, Sir.
The difference is that one cannot easily trace the effect of a slavery that functionally ended 20 generations ago. There are people alive today whose grandparents or at least great grandparents were slaves. Moreover Jim Crow effectively segregated the financial opportunities of people into the 70’s. Comparing this history to that of the 16 hundreds isn’t very accurate

I'm a poor white American. I come from a broken family, my mother and father were both blue collar poor. Both sides going back hundreds of years were poor. I share far more in common with other people of low socioeconomic origins regardless of their race/ethnicity than I ever could with wealthier people who have the same skin tone as me. Generational poverty cuts the same across the board. I'm in graduate school currently and in my experience, it's poor people that are underrepresented, not racial groups. Getting out of generational poverty is a Herculean effort for everyone it touches and most can not (will not) do it.
Me too but finished grad school. And no one helped me at all. I never took welfare, food stamps etc. It is so hard to break out of the chains of poverty and abuse. It is up to the individual.
Yes, my father only had an 8th grade education because his family were dust bowl refugees. He was a drywall contractor and also a preacher. He helped the poor and we had homeless people in our home, he never aspired to be wealthy. From age 11, I was taken along to learn sheetrock and drywall. I have worked in drywall, been a plumber, served in the military and then I went to college and gave up a high paying job to be a teacher and eventually got my master's. First off, I will say, I will not tolerate anyone using the genocidal term "privileged" if they have not built more homes then I built before I was 18. The only reason someone thinks that I don't have enough experience to understand their point of view, is because they don't have any experience of working hard as a child. Go work a summer doing sheetrock on a construction site at age 16 and you will realize what it looks like when you complain that you are "oppressed" because of the way your are portrayed in Hollywood. But I have shared my story of being raised very poor and when I share it, the response they give is "if you are white and poor, you are just really lazy because you should have used your privilege." So that right there shows "privilege" rhetoric is just about pure hatred of anyone with certain skin. Then I tell them that actually I did serve in the military to get my degree and have probably tutored more of their own kids than they have and have actually done more to serve their community and then they do a 180 and say "that is all because of your privilege". Point is that "privilege" is a self-perpetuating form of hate that cannot be disproven to its believers no matter what evidence they see. They see a successful white person and envy them for "privilege", they see a poor white person and just despise them because they demonize them as "lazy." Its kind of like when white people move out, its "white flight" but when they move in, its "oppression of gentrification." Point is, its all excuses.

It's not about making actual reparations. It's about bullying the more compassionate peoples, those seen as easier targets. If western civilization wasn't so compassionate, proving their point wrong by simply being targeted for reparations, they wouldn't dare. They know if they tried targeting descendants of the Brarbary Coast pirates and the current old world peoples who continue the slave-trade, they'd just be laughed at, possibly enslaved.
It's one of the ironizes of the whole racial tension in the USA. Sowell makes things up off the top of his head, for instance his claim about whites made slaves by the Barbary States of North Africa is an absurdity in every way. First of all because those who lived in the Barbary States themselves would not have been considered black and subject to slavery in the US, Second because at the time of the Civil War there were 4 MILLION black slaves held in the US alone, a figure which dwarfs any possible total in Barbary. But wait, that doesn't even take into account the 1-2 million black people died in the Middle Passage a phenomenon never experienced by the white people taken into slavery.

Sowell has an appalling ignorance of history, especially on this subject. When the British banned slavery they DID pay reparations, but the government paid them to the slave OWNERS. The slaves got nothing. In fact, as British tax payers the former slaves and their descendants helped pay for the debt to their former owners: "Just three years ago, taxpayers were still paying off government debt borrowed to pay millions in 'compensation' to wealthy slave owners. While some were well aware of the payments, which finally stopped in 2015, a lot of people had no idea modern Brits were paying off money the British Treasury gave to people made rich through human suffering. The government pledged in 1833 £20 million in order to reimburse the owners of slaves when slavery was abolished in Britain. The sum, while big now, was monstrous in 1833, and it took the British taxpayer 182 years to pay off. The information was revealed by the Treasury after a freedom of Information request, the Bristol Post reports. Bristol was known then as the 'slave capital' of Britain, due to the relative volume of owners in the port city."

If you want a gut ranching history on slavery, look at the history of Persia, as a Persian I’m not happy but it has happened… now I’m not undermining the effects that black people went through in the USA but to just give them reparations is just undermining the other side who weren’t black and were in slaved
Just been reading about Uruk, the first city. They had slaves. That's roughly 200 generations ago. Even the Vikings enslaving Scots only happened in the last quarter of that time, and the transatlantic slave trade in the last 10% of it. The truth is there must be few of us on the planet today, of whatever colour, who's ancestors were not at some point slaves. Who pays reparation to whom? Iceland must be a particularly interesting case, ancestors being male slave owners who (in large part) kidnapped and enslaved female Scots. Mostly reparations will cancel out in that case, unless one looks carefully at which genetic material comes from which chromosome. Is extra-nuclear DNA to be included? In which case I guess modern Icelandic women should receive some reparations from modern Icelandic men.
Exactly. I'm all for accountability and for people being willing to make amends, sometimes that could include for one's (recent) ancestors to those they directly ripped off or harmed, but typically this should be a strictly voluntary thing ( basically anything not, is already a thing. People do being legal cases against estates of someone who committed crimes against them, right ? ) and I definitely agree to all u said !!!
When I visited the museum in iceland I found it interesting that they changed the narrative. British women decided to migrate there. The smaller museums still called them slaves
They paid the Jews , the Chinese, the fake Indian Siberian mongols , they pay Ukraine , they pay fake Israel , so the indigenous moors of the land are the only ones who don’t get compensated ?? Interesting
The black community needs a reset. All benefits for single motherhood, affirmative action, and assistance for fatherless homes need to be removed. Black people don't need reparations. They need to heal the hatred they have for one another. This requires accountability not government intervention.
Yes so strange, Israelites were slave in Egypt back then, they flee Egypt If African American dont like it, they can always flee America China was enslaved by Japan, China aint playing victim tho Stop it, get some help blackish (not all black are POS tho)

Living in the us is enough reparations for anybody. If your attitude is right, and you apply yourself, the opportunities are there for you. Would those who demand reparations prefer to be living in Africa or the US today? Because their location is also a legacy of slavery.
You're joking right? Opportunity in this country means knowing how to take advantage of the vulnerable and desperate in a given situation. Citizenship feels more like gang initiation or fraternity hazing if you haven't noticed.
Exactly. And if we look at actual history the freedom of blacks only happened because whites were demanding it. It was white people who went into Africa and squashed the slave trade. It’s black people in white countries that are the most intelligent and successful in human history. So you are absolutely right they got reparation and more. If anything they probably owe the rest of us money for all the extortion that’s Been going on since the 60’s.
How can we still claim “disparate impact” when there is not a single endeavor available to a US citizen in which blacks have not occupied or currently occupy pinnacle positions? Government, political, military, medical, entrepreneurship, entertainment, engineering, sport, education, poet laureate... hell if you ask Americans to name a scientist - most would name Neal deGrasse Tyson.

So why do Americans buy into all this so easily? People seek the "Truth" but when they find it? Deny it or call it false. Division, in itself, is a strategic way of taking over without ever going to war.

The difference is that one cannot easily trace the effect of a slavery that functionally ended 20 generations ago.

But wait, that doesn't even take into account the 1-2 million black people died in the Middle Passage a phenomenon never experienced by the white people taken into slavery.
Thomas Sowell has a pleasant demeanor and great diction and is relaxing to listen to if you don't think too much about what he is actually saying.

Sowell has an appalling ignorance of history, especially on this subject. When the British banned slavery they DID pay reparations, but the government paid them to the slave OWNERS. The slaves got nothing. In fact, as British tax payers the former slaves and their descendants helped pay for the debt to their former owners:
"Just three years ago, taxpayers were still paying off government debt borrowed to pay millions in 'compensation' to wealthy slave owners.

How about the cost paid by the country when it joined with England in fighting to engage slavers at sea and how many lives were lost in engagements to stop the overseas slave trade? And the black slaves in America were originally sold to whites by black Africans, so logically, shouldn't black Africans also pay reparations to African Americans? What about Arabs and Turks for enslaving both Africans and Europeans? Mongols? India? In the end, the idea of somebody who was never a slave owner paying reparations for slavery to somebody who was never a slave is just absurd.

No matter how much money would be paid in reparations (and that portion is not so easy to even determine by itself), the next demand would be “it’s not enough”. It would never end. this is not a racist statement. This is just how politics works. Politicians need this topic to be on going and not ending because this is not about any “repentance” or “rebirth”. Generations! of blacks have been on welfare and when I came here they were getting a lot more benefits from the same government without even having to work. I had to work for the lowest pay and watch those people getting government money just because some of their grand grand grand fathers were slaves. I didn’t choose to be a victim or demand that I need to be fed for the rest of my life. You can argue this point to an American who is scared and pressured into political correctness and submission but you can’t get far with it with immigrants like me.
Also, opposite to a majority of Americans, I also studied world history and not only American history. And I understand and know that the concept of slavery is not unique to United States.
It’s money grubbing, period. An excuse for extorting money.
This man is SO spot on it gives me goose bumps.
Nonsense, don’t be a slavery denier.
@@tijan8948 you clearly didnt watch the video. Dont be a forever victim.
@@CopMorty when you say clearly and you’re wrong 🤣. Of course I’ve watched the video and I’ve seen it before in the context of a longer video. I actually agree with his take on history if you watch the entire video. He is deracialising slavery showing that it has nothing to do inherently with black people.
What you perhaps don’t understand is that the USA explicitly tried to tie to state of being enslaved to blackness, through a variety of race conscious laws and constitutional provisions. Race is an invented concept in the US meant to propagate structures of power, exploitation and profit.
@@tijan8948 Slavery denier?
You mean those who ONLY talk about black slavery all the time, while ignoring every other enslaved race?
Hey guys, excellent clip. I'm reading Mary Graybar's "Debunking Howard Zinn".
It is a fairly thorough, scholarly rebuttal to Zinn's very successful but Erroneous,
"A People's History of the United States."
Thoroughly sourced from very reputable historians, I recommend it highly.
Thx T S TV
Thanks for the recommendation
Recommend the Audible version. Debunking Zinn destroys the American left's (marxist business peoples) psuedo god; Zinn is dismantled quote by quote, fact by fact.
Debunking Zinn is incredible for showing how utterly false were 95% of Zinns writings
I thoroughly enjoyed that book
@@KaoticOrder Debunking Howard Zinn is a great book
Thanks for the recommendation mate.
I learn so much from this man.
The real issue is , no one ever moves on , people want to hold on to their drama , although it never affected them. But just to have something to complain about. It will never end, just like war. Someone did me wrong , they must pay. This is wrong thinking , we need to come together leave all this behind us and start thinking about what we are going to do on the future. We have a lot of problems , this shouldn't be one of them !!
".....intellectuals who can imagine a different history from the rest of the world....." sums up the problem with elevating academicians to lofty heights, they do not deserve, with tenure and public funds.
Non-sense you think they teach the full story of American slavery in US history books😅. They would never admit to that guilt
Tijan
You are correct that the history of slavery taught in US is incomplete.
Otherwise they would know that the black slaves were sold to whiteys from other black people who actually did the raiding, killing, and enslaving.
Otherwise this issue of slavery reparation would be laughed off the stage because of how ridiculous it is.
@@tijan8948 It's far too late for that guilt. You should have been there at the end of the civil war, but you weren't. By the way nonsense is not hyphenated.
@@hugehappygrin see my prior comment, thanks
@@chuckysmaria6466 Once again don’t be a holocaust denier. See what it did to Kanye and Kyrie. And they are black! No minority group can ever be an oppressor. Look at you picking on the underdog. What a weak person you must be.
Black people were enslaved and killed by the millions. It’s very nearly a genocide and definitely a holocaust. Don’t try to deny it
Dr Sowell is a brilliant intellect and exposes the misguided and stupid intellect of others who think that the people of the present need to be shamed into submission for the behaviour of others in the past.
I could listen to Thomas Sowell for hours the knowledge he has is humbling and opens your eyes to a world to truly see and not look at it threw a lense .
Trump/Sowell 2024!
Sowell sure, but jail tRump for 2024 years.
This man is a pure gift.
Amazing how so many point out injustices in their own country but develop total Amnesia about the rest of the world.
So why do Americans buy into all this so easily? People seek the "Truth" but when they find it? Deny it or call it false. You can always prove ones own point of view by simply looking through your own perspective. In this current day, it seems the "Divide" is what motivates some people. To give them a sense of purpose. Division, in itself, is a strategic way of taking over without ever going to war. If we as Americans, are so busy fighting each other of issues from Yester decades, we can never unite and be the Strong Nation that we Truly are. Uniting builds strength to overcome diversity. Not Division. Really think about that folks.
My family was uprooted and brought here against our will from Scotland. My relative and his eight children were sold into service for ten years. His wife and three babies who were deemed worthless as workers were left on their own back home. Who knows what happened to them. Deeds of servitude were sold and traded constantly. In most instances the term of servitude was changed over and over. Having no education and no voice it was easy to be used. I am caucasian.
I'm still all for reparations. Anyone who feels they need reparations could pick it up at the US embassy in Liberia when they turn in their passport.
I agree with him on all the above, and especially on The Atlantic.
