Worse, some of the people demanding compensation had ancestors who were willing participants of the slave trade and profited from it. Others, are descendants of slaves and find themselves lumped in with the slave owners by virtue of their skin colour. I want to know when colonial American forces invaded Africa in order to procure slaves to work in the colonies or afterwards in the United States! Were black residents of Africa waiting on the shore to be captured and shipped to the United States? The great majority of slaves were imprisoned in our southern states and by large enterprise plantations and farms. Would reparations be limited descendants of those enterprises? Descendants of abolitionists would also be asked to pay? Former President Obama’s lineage was part white. Do we attach his wealth or give him a mixed race discount . What about whites such as Sandra Bullock or Angelina Jolie who adopted black children would be taxed by disregarding their good deeds! Roy Rodgers and his wife Dale Evans who adopted Downs kids during the 1950’s ? Are their descendants allowed a discount for saving children from a lifetime in institutions.
      What about Japanese internment during world war 2. What about black families that owned slaves themselves? Do they pay or collect?

Again Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institute a right wing organization that pays him handsomely to said these things. Each country has different impacts on slavery for black people to make reparations for the damages of slavery a global issue is wrong . Each country should made their own case PERIOD.

    My great great grandmother sold her infant child (my great grandfather) as an indentured servant to people who lived on a farm in Kansas. This was like slavery as the money received for his back-breaking work from sun-up to sun-down would never be as much as the cost to house and feed him. He thus never would have gotten out of debt. These people adopted him, and even changed his birth name, but he said he never felt love from them. It was a pure money transaction, and race had nothing to do with it!! So, when he was in his late teens, he took the chance. He ran away, jumped on trains, and got a job at the 1903 NYC World Fair. My great grandfather was white, and he never stepped foot in Kansas again.

      The difference is that one cannot easily trace the effect of a slavery that functionally ended 20 generations ago. Comparing this history to that of the 16 hundreds isn’t very accurate

I share far more in common with other people of low socioeconomic origins regardless of their race/ethnicity than I ever could with wealthier people who have the same skin tone as me. Generational poverty cuts the same across the board. I'm in graduate school currently and in my experience, it's poor people that are underrepresented, not racial groups. Getting out of generational poverty is a Herculean effort for everyone it touches and most can not (will not) do it.

      Yes, my father only had an 8th grade education because his family were dust bowl refugees. He was a drywall contractor and also a preacher. He helped the poor and we had homeless people in our home, he never aspired to be wealthy. From age 11, I was taken along to learn sheetrock and drywall. I have worked in drywall, been a plumber, served in the military and then I went to college and gave up a high paying job to be a teacher and eventually got my master's.
      First off, I will say, I will not tolerate anyone using the genocidal term "privileged" if they have not built more homes then I built before I was 18. The only reason someone thinks that I don't have enough experience to understand their point of view, is because they don't have any experience of working hard as a child. Go work a summer doing sheetrock on a construction site at age 16 and you will realize what it looks like when you complain that you are "oppressed" because of the way your are portrayed in Hollywood. But I have shared my story of being raised very poor and when I share it, the response they give is "if you are white and poor, you are just really lazy because you should have used your privilege." So that right there shows "privilege" rhetoric is just about pure hatred of anyone with certain skin. Then I tell them that actually I did serve in the military to get my degree and have probably tutored more of their own kids than they have and have actually done more to serve their community and then they do a 180 and say "that is all because of your privilege". Point is that "privilege" is a self-perpetuating form of hate that cannot be disproven to its believers no matter what evidence they see. They see a successful white person and envy them for "privilege", they see a poor white person and just despise them because they demonize them as "lazy." Its kind of like when white people move out, its "white flight" but when they move in, its "oppression of gentrification." Point is, its all excuses.

      Sowell makes things up off the top of his head, for instance his claim about whites made slaves by the Barbary States of North Africa is an absurdity in every way. First of all because those who lived in the Barbary States themselves would not have been considered black and subject to slavery in the US, Second because at the time of the Civil War there were 4 MILLION black slaves held in the US alone, a figure which dwarfs any possible total in Barbary. But wait, that doesn't even take into account the 1-2 million black people died in the Middle Passage a phenomenon never experienced by the white people taken into slavery.

      Sowell has an appalling ignorance of history, especially on this subject. When the British banned slavery they DID pay reparations, but the government paid them to the slave OWNERS. The slaves got nothing. In fact, as British tax payers the former slaves and their descendants helped pay for the debt to their former owners:
      "Just three years ago, taxpayers were still paying off government debt borrowed to pay millions in 'compensation' to wealthy slave owners.
      While some were well aware of the payments, which finally stopped in 2015, a lot of people had no idea modern Brits were paying off money the British Treasury gave to people made rich through human suffering.
      The government pledged in 1833 £20 million in order to reimburse the owners of slaves when slavery was abolished in Britain. The sum, while big now, was monstrous in 1833, and it took the British taxpayer 182 years to pay off.
      The information was revealed by the Treasury after a freedom of Information request, the Bristol Post reports. Bristol was known then as the 'slave capital' of Britain, due to the relative volume of owners in the port city."

Even the aztexcs was enslaved, but look at the Mexicans risking everything to get here and get an opportunity. , I tell you what in 20 years time , The Hispanics and the Kurdish are freaking doing things. Their communities are flourishing in my area , I'm in Nashville and they seem to really like it here, and they have built alot of stores. They have created their own business like grey hound, Dentistry , grocery, bakers, restaurants, etc etc I could ramble but you get the point ...
      Did you know blk ppl spend more money on goods and services than any other race .. that means,clothes, jewelry, nails , vacations, cars, internet ,cable,
      Yet they have the least amount of wealth , meaning they spend their money of assets that never gain and grow,
      They live in rentals and spend all their money looking good, throwing lavish parties, vacationing ..
      And it really bothered me they spend alot of money on internet, but statistics say they are on social media more than any other race too, They aren't even using it to learn , a great many of downtown blk ppl letting their kids play games and they are illiterate , But white ppl are just supposed to bare this burden until the end of time ..
      I say give them reparations give it to them , the ones who promised land but didn't receive it, only ppl who can prove they are direct decendants of slaves , oh don't forget there was infact biracial blacks that was left the wealth of the plantation owners if they didn't have a white son . The movie the color purple teaches that. But yea give it to them if all the ducks in a row and I know every single black person in America won't receive them they just won't, but I know a majority of them think they will , but it's a way to stimulate the economy,
      I was reading about how long each race money remains in each community .
      Asians =30-35 days
      Whites = 19-25 days
      Hispanics = 16-20 days
      Blacks = 6 hours .
      Only 6 hours as soon as they get money they spend it ..all this information is readily available.

    When it comes down to it, hasn't the U.S. paid a tremendous price for the practice of slavery? Weren't the slave owning states decimated and bankrupted in the war, and wasn't there a full scale bloodbath for white sons on both sides of the issue? How about the cost paid by the country when it joined with England in fighting to engage slavers at sea and how many lives were lost in engagements to stop the overseas slave trade? What price has been paid in civil unrest and through the welfare state? And just how did getting things for "free" affect the black community as a whole? Even the Vikings enslaving Scots only happened in the last quarter of that time, and the transatlantic slave trade in the last 10% of it. The truth is there must be few of us on the planet today, of whatever colour, who's ancestors were not at some point slaves. Who pays reparation to whom?
    Iceland must be a particularly interesting case, ancestors being male slave owners who (in large part) kidnapped and enslaved female Scots. Mostly reparations will cancel out in that case, unless one looks carefully at which genetic material comes from which chromosome. Is extra-nuclear DNA to be included? I actually agree with his take on history if you watch the entire video. He is deracialising slavery showing that it has nothing to do inherently with black people.
      What you perhaps don’t understand is that the USA explicitly tried to tie to state of being enslaved to blackness, through a variety of race conscious laws and constitutional provisions. Race is an invented concept in the US meant to propagate structures of power, exploitation and profit.

    It is a fairly thorough, scholarly rebuttal to Zinn's very successful but Erroneous,
    "A People's History of the United States."
    Thoroughly sourced from very reputable historians, I recommend it highly.

    The real issue is , no one ever moves on , people want to hold on to their drama , although it never affected them. But just to have something to complain about. It will never end, just like war. Someone did me wrong , they must pay. This is wrong thinking , we need to come together leave all this behind us and start thinking about what we are going to do on the future. We have a lot of problems , this shouldn't be one of them !!

      You are correct that the history of slavery taught in US is incomplete.
      Otherwise they would know that the black slaves were sold to whiteys from other black people who actually did the raiding, killing, and enslaving.
      Otherwise this issue of slavery reparation would be laughed off the stage because of how ridiculous it is.

    So why do Americans buy into all this so easily? People seek the "Truth" but when they find it? Deny it or call it false. You can always prove ones own point of view by simply looking through your own perspective. In this current day, it seems the "Divide" is what motivates some people. To give them a sense of purpose. Division, in itself, is a strategic way of taking over without ever going to war. If we as Americans, are so busy fighting each other of issues from Yester decades, we can never unite and be the Strong Nation that we Truly are. Uniting builds strength to overcome diversity. Not Division. Really think about that folks.

    My family was uprooted and brought here against our will from Scotland. My relative and his eight children were sold into service for ten years. His wife and three babies who were deemed worthless as workers were left on their own back home. Who knows what happened to them. Deeds of servitude were sold and traded constantly. In most instances the term of servitude was changed over and over. Having no education and no voice it was easy to be used. I am caucasian.
