Victor Davis Hanson has made a series of claims about immigration that critics argue are misleading, alarmist, and rooted in exaggerated fears rather than objective facts. Here are some of the key themes in Hanson’s statements and how they have been challenged: Immigrants as a Burden on Social Systems: Hanson often portrays immigrants as a strain on welfare systems, implying that they take more than they contribute. However, studies consistently show that immigrants contribute more in taxes than they use in public benefits over the long term. Many economists argue that immigrants play essential roles in sectors like agriculture, construction, and healthcare, supporting economic growth rather than draining resources. "Cultural Decline" Due to Multiculturalism: Hanson frequently blames multiculturalism for eroding "Western values" and has suggested that immigrants don’t assimilate. This argument is criticized for lacking evidence, as data indicates that immigrants in the U.S. generally adopt English and American cultural norms over time. Scholars argue that Hanson’s framing misrepresents the multicultural fabric of the U.S. and ignores the positive cultural contributions immigrants make. Framing Immigration as a "Threat" to National Identity: Hanson warns of an “invasion” of immigrants that could undermine American identity, using language that is often associated with far-right nationalist movements. This rhetoric is widely criticized for stoking unnecessary fear and dividing communities, especially as there is no concrete evidence to support claims that immigration inherently threatens national security or identity. Blaming "Sanctuary Cities" for Crime: Hanson has suggested that sanctuary cities, which limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, foster lawlessness and higher crime rates. Studies have debunked this claim, showing that sanctuary cities often have lower crime rates compared to non-sanctuary cities. By linking immigrants to criminality without data support, Hanson reinforces harmful stereotypes. Claiming That Open Borders Benefit Elites Only: Hanson often argues that "open borders" serve the interests of wealthy elites who exploit cheap labor while regular citizens bear the costs. This narrative is seen as misleading, as most immigrants enter the U.S. legally, and there are numerous regulations already in place that govern immigration and labor standards. Portraying Immigrants as Unwilling to Assimilate: Hanson suggests immigrants resist assimilation, preserving foreign customs at the expense of “American culture.” This misrepresents the reality that immigrants, over generations, tend to adopt American values, language, and traditions. Research consistently shows high rates of assimilation among immigrant families in the U.S., contradicting Hanson’s assertions. Hanson’s views on immigration have been heavily criticized for using fear-based rhetoric that aligns more with far-right nationalist perspectives than with objective scholarship. Critics argue that his statements lack grounding in data and serve to push a divisive agenda rather than provide factual insights into immigration issues. Sources: Hoover Institution, "The Civic Cost of Illegal Immigration" (Criticism of Hansen's rhetoric on social strain and multiculturalism) New Criterion and additional coverage of Hanson’s work on immigration
Non-Marxist Americans (surely the majority still?) must hope the still indefatigable VDH can keep his energetic, informed defence of liberal democracy going for many more years.
Hanson has such a great command of statistics about immigration it is mind-boggling. And he makes his arguments so calmly and cogently, it is impressive. Great job Dr. Hanson!
Victor Davis Hanson is a divisive figure, especially among legitimate historians, many of whom see him as a conservative provocateur who’s abandoned serious scholarship for partisan commentary. Originally recognized for his expertise in classical history, Hanson has since morphed into a Trump loyalist and far-right propagandist, using his historical knowledge to justify deeply reactionary views. Historians who once respected his work on Greek history and warfare now view his shift into political punditry as a serious compromise of intellectual integrity. Here's what Hanson does that has led many historians to consider him intellectually dishonest: Politicizing History to Serve a Far-Right Agenda: Hanson has twisted historical analogies to fit a hardline nationalist agenda, often drawing flimsy comparisons between ancient societies and modern America in ways that exaggerate threats to “Western civilization.” His narratives consistently present progressive values as corrupting forces, reminiscent of far-right figures who cherry-pick history to prop up authoritarian ideas. Promoting Alarmist and Divisive Rhetoric: Instead of providing balanced historical analysis, Hanson paints a picture of cultural apocalypse, depicting liberals, immigrants, and “elites” as existential threats to American values. His commentary borders on conspiracy theory, with critics accusing him of stoking paranoia rather than contributing meaningful insights. Scholars see this as manipulative fearmongering rather than legitimate historical interpretation. Hypocrisy and Elitism: Hanson rails against “elites” and portrays himself as a defender of the “common man,” but he’s as embedded in elite circles as anyone. He’s leveraged his academic background to gain credibility in conservative media while ignoring actual evidence or balanced analysis. This hypocrisy has drawn criticism from historians who see his "anti-elite" posturing as both opportunistic and dishonest. Selling Out Scholarship for Partisan Influence: Historians who once respected Hanson’s scholarship now see him as a figure who has sold out to become a mouthpiece for far-right ideology. His unchecked support of Trump and attacks on “liberal intellectuals” have led many in the academic world to view him as little more than a propagandist hiding behind a façade of scholarship. Hanson’s transformation from a respected classicist to a far-right ideologue exemplifies the dangers of intellectual dishonesty in academia. He’s using his knowledge to validate partisan extremism rather than seeking truth, making him a polarizing figure who’s viewed with contempt by mainstream historians.
The reason Americans don't do low wage back breaking work is it's sporadic, a lot of distance between jobs, the cost to live and HEALTHCARE, that illegal aliens get free. The prison populations are growing so utilize them for agriculture work.
I think about everything I've learned from the arts and found the biggest lie ever told. Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, they lived happily ever after. That's it. I love listening to Dr. Hanson. He makes sense in a crazy world.
The guy started out his career advocating for mass amnesty. He has tuned it down and now just complains about illegal immigration without ever proposing a solution. I don't trust him !!!
195 countries in the world and most have sent their people to USA - how many countries won’t take immigrants like we do? Or won’t take immigrants at all?
Actually, the point is also that this a double sword: being a prosperous country makes immigrants came and settled and contribute and also makes this issue about massive migration and also using the system for Interests (something impossible in countries like Iran for example)
As legal immigrants we had to wait five years to be able to become citizens no very long ago. What is this 2-3 years? I also could not go back to my country because I would lose my chance to become a citizen. Why did my family have to go through this crap which almost destroyed it (I am not telling the full tragic story)?
Israel is suffering from massive illegal immigration? I thought this country was pretty strict on immigration? You are 100% right for UK, and I add the whole Western Europe( France, Spain, Portugal, Italia,..). Here it is not mexicans, but millions of subsaharans.
Undoubtedly Victor Davis has dedicated decades analyzing the issue of illegal immigration into the U.S. After watching this highlight video, it led me to the realization that illegal immigration is much less about cheap labor, self-interest, and the profit motive and a lot more to do with both the ethical and behavioral consequences it implies. Victor Davis describes the very real social phenomenon where the "first generation" Mexican worker(s) 18-19 years old working construction and agriculture are some of the "hardest worker in the world." Victor Davis contrasts this fact to the normal and to be expected "aging process" that's taking place. He discusses how in the course of performing their jobs, illegal migrants are seen getting injured on the job, may gain weight, may become ill, but their respective employers "aren't obligated" to take care of them and subsequently become ward of the state. Victor Davis discusses the children of illegal migrants who have never been to Mexico, don't speak Spanish, and yet they haven't "been given the tools to compete in a very competitive America" become embittered when realizing the fate of their parents. Mr. Hanson views this reality as incorporating of "a cynicism involved about recycling human capital." Mr. Hanson taps into our American sense of conscience and accountability by stating "there's something going on ethically, psychologically, morally, or socially that says to Americans you don't have to do that type of work-somebody else will do that for you at a cheaper rate......there's been a difference in the attitude and respect for hard work." During the Q&A portion of the video Mr. Hanson retorts in response to illegal flow of migrant groups by stating that "while you see this as something that's logical and works for the economic benefit of the United States, other people would disagree with you because they would see entirely different results from it-in other words they would see a massive influx of people from Mexico, a constituency that would have historical grievances against the United States, might not assimilate, would have claims of a separate language, and would demand collective and group representation, i.e. they wouldn't want a different type of state." To my dismay this truthful and well understood statement by Mr. Hason was met by disbelieve when the other guess replied that most illegal Mexican migrants just want to work hard, provide for their families and get ahead. Now I know that this response does acknowledge the immediate concerns of illegal migrants, but we can't be entirely dismissive of the very real function and role that attitudes and opinions play in human future behavior. Just as well attitudes and opinions are always taught, they have universal implications across different groups of people, and always influences peoples' behaviors. A good analogy to illustrate the significance of taught attitudes and opinions would be to liken it to a recesive gene. Just like a recesive gene it isn't much of a concern to us nor does it threaten our lives so long as it remains dormant. However, as soon as it is activated it all of the sudden takes precedence, can change your life forever, and can even end your life prematurely. All human groups teach attitudes and opinions to their members and this fact inevitably influences their behavior towards other people. When and how people start behaving towards other people according to the attitudes and opinions they have been taught only depends on the moment they become activated at which time these attitudes and opinions take precedence. Long held grievances, territorial claims, group representation, claiming foreign language, not wanting to assimilate, etc., can all be viewed as attitudes and opinions that are taught and are just waiting to take precedence when we least expected. there was a comprehensive study that showed prior to tightening the border (decades ago), 80+% of the immigrants went back home each year. They had been employed as seasonal laborers, so they came for the work (that u.s. citizens won't do) and then returned. when we closed the borders, they stayed, because it would be too hard to re-cross. How a govt policy had the opposite of the intended effect.
There is a program in place for migrant workers and has been operating with problems for decades. Most migrant workers under this program go back and forth legally with no problems. There are thousands of residences here in the Rio Grande Valley where many leave vehicles and clothing and such. They are a welcome in the community and have there own culture. Yes, there are abuses on both sides but it is a workable solution.

Non-Marxist Americans (surely the majority still?) must hope the still indefatigable VDH can keep his energetic, informed defence of liberal democracy going for many more years.
This is a contribution to a discussion on immigration.
Are there any other topics you would like us to discuss?
Here's what Hanson does that has led many historians to consider him intellectually dishonest:
Politicizing History to Serve a Far-Right Agenda:
Hanson has twisted historical analogies to fit a hardline nationalist agenda, often drawing flimsy comparisons between ancient societies and modern America in ways that exaggerate threats to “Western civilization.” His narratives consistently present progressive values as corrupting forces, reminiscent of far-right figures who cherry-pick history to prop up authoritarian ideas.
Promoting Alarmist and Divisive Rhetoric:
Instead of providing balanced historical analysis, Hanson paints a picture of cultural apocalypse, depicting liberals, immigrants, and “elites” as existential threats to American values. His commentary borders on conspiracy theory, with critics accusing him of stoking paranoia rather than contributing meaningful insights. Scholars see this as manipulative fearmongering rather than legitimate historical interpretation.
Hypocrisy and Elitism:
Hanson rails against “elites” and portrays himself as a defender of the “common man,” but he’s as embedded in elite circles as anyone. He’s leveraged his academic background to gain credibility in conservative media while ignoring actual evidence or balanced analysis. This hypocrisy has drawn criticism from historians who see his "anti-elite" posturing as both opportunistic and dishonest.
Selling Out Scholarship for Partisan Influence:
Historians who once respected Hanson’s scholarship now see him as a figure who has sold out to become a mouthpiece for far-right ideology.
Do you keep door open in house and anyone can come in
Professor Hanson doesn't believe illegal immigrants will be going home.
That we don't have the will to get this done.
Oh, yes we do.
Maybe now but 20 years ago it would have been inconceivable
I think about everything I've learned from the arts and found the biggest lie ever told. Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, they lived happily ever after. That's it. I love listening to Dr. Hanson. He makes sense in a crazy world.
Put Victor in charge of anything and everything!!
Nice guys finish last. No more mister nice guy. Close the border now!
Democrats won't, and conservatives don't have the spine, or the will to be called "way sist" for doing what needs doing.
As legal immigrants we had to wait five years to be able to become citizens no very long ago. What is this 2-3 years? I also could not go back to my country because I would lose my chance to become a citizen. Why did my family have to go through this crap which almost destroyed it (I am not telling the full tragic story)?
Thank democrats.
Same here
Its happening in Britain, Israel etc
to the detriment of democracy...
Israel is suffering from massive illegal immigration?
I thought this country was pretty strict on immigration?
You are 100% right for UK, and I add the whole Western Europe( France, Spain, Portugal, Italia,..).
Here it is not mexicans, but millions of subsaharans.
France and Germany voted for parties that will close the borders to illegal muslim immigration

Victor Davis Hanson has made a series of claims about immigration that critics argue are misleading, alarmist, and rooted in exaggerated fears rather than objective facts. Here are some of the key themes in Hanson’s statements and how they have been challenged:
Immigrants as a Burden on Social Systems: Hanson often portrays immigrants as a strain on welfare systems, implying that they take more than they contribute.
Research consistently shows high rates of assimilation among immigrant families in the U.S., contradicting Hanson’s assertions.

there was a comprehensive study that showed prior to tightening the border (decades ago), 80+% of the immigrants went back home each year. They had been employed as seasonal laborers, so they came for the work (that u.s. citizens won't do) and then returned. when we closed the borders, they stayed, because it would be too hard to re-cross.
