You guys on camera together is what this channel needed....glad ya'll finally got Trent up there with you. Good stuff, guys
So it's basically a $90.00-100.00 bourbon in a $150.00 bottle ? Kinda glad you reviewed this because i definitely was going to buy 1 of these now i am really going to have to consider if the extra fancy packaging is worth the $ .
Funny side note. After I discovered your channel, I have gone back and started watching your older episodes. I'm really enjoying those as well. I do have to say that I'm glad Trenton is now making appearances in front of the camera instead of being a disembodied voice in th background. I really love the back-and-forth between the two of you. Your videos really do feel like a group of friends and family sitting around talking, laughing, and cutting up over some really nice drinks. Just a ton of fun and I thank you for all the hard work it takes to put each and every video together!
100% agree...Loved seeing Kurt solo, but father and son make a GREAT TEAM, and seeing the whole fan damily during the live shows is an extra treat.
Thanks so much! Took a while to talk Trent into it but he is a natural.
Kurt, as I am sure you already know, with a son like Trent you don't need to sweat the details. It's pretty much a given that he's got your back. What a great review and show content. Thanks guys. I would never be able to justify in my mind spending that much on bourbon, but it is fun living vicariously through you guys. Thanks Trent and Kurt!
Thanks so much!
Would love to see a blind with this Gatsby, KC18, Cal 16, and maybe a ringer like Early Times bib.
Thanks for all the great content guys!!
You guys are awesome, consistent videos, great/honest reviews...and with the both of you up there now its an interesting dynamic....love the content, keep it going!
Just want to say how much I enjoy the show. Trent coming from behind the camera to in front of it has only made it all that much better! Keep up the great work. You guys feel like family to me.
And that’s the way we like it! We truly consider our community family!
Thanks again for another honest, detailed review. I love it when you do the value bourbon shows also because it helps a newer bourbon drinker like me maximize my dollars. You guys are great. Have a great weekend
We will def be doing more budget reviews.
Thank you so much for your honesty. I really appreciate that about the show. And I too am a huge fan of the Knob Creek 9 year
Great video guys, appreciate the honest thoughts. I think it’s only right to hold a higher expectation anytime you buy a more expensive bottle. Simple as you put it, it’s good, it’s just maybe not $250 good.
Appreciate you guys!
I just want to take a moment to say Thank You!! I went through a time about 20 plus years ago and just drank everything as fast as I could. Now that I have decided to enjoy it I also found your videos. I am learning how to enjoy. You have to have the best videos keep up the great work, John from Fort Worth Texas
Hey Guys. You’re very welcome for the gift card. I don’t live near Bees but I asked Trent for a few local places to check out on a past video. The store is great. Was able to get one of the last Nulu SLB picks. Keep up the awesome videos. Cheers guys!
John, thanks so much buddy! Would love to send you somebody as a token of our appreciation. How can I get a hold of you? - Trenton
Thanks guys, really enjoy this channel- excellent work
Thank you for the objective review, guys! I think we can see that a "premium" bourbon priced 5X (6X?) higher than something more ordinary is not always going to be a 5X better spirit.
Thanks so much for the review!
I think I paid $200 for Volstead when it came out in 2019(?) It was good, but not $200 good. Thanks for saving me $250! I'll just drink by back-up bottle of Remus V instead.
Remus V is far better so enjoy!
Always love hearing your honest opinions as a whiskey lover. I have built a nice collection based on similar palettes, so it's nice to know where to save the money and when to spend it :)
Btw, Trent looks like he wrestled. I would bet $100 on it
I can see why you would say that. You were close! I did in high school but Trent just was not interested in sports.
Good to hear a review on something that I would think long and hard before buying. You guys make it fun to watch as a bonus.
Great video. Thanks for stepping on that "landmine" for us. I don't feel like paying $150 just for the glass bottle. All of the producers are going to press the "premium" releases on us until we stop buying them.
I can't believe I had never seen your channel! It's great! Great job guys. If it hasn't been done, can you do a list of the best bourbon you've had for price range (10s, 20s, 30s, etc)?
We did do those videos but revisiting those categories is always a good idea!
"lower proof" cask strength happens with Dickel sometimes. Wild Turkey had one in MK series. There is another LDI/MGP release called Lorely coming out from the Maryland Heritage Series as well. Seelbachs will have it I believe on 10/21
Thank you for getting this one! love the bottle. may have to get an empty one on eBay :)
Kurt I love your show !!! You and Trenton work awesome together 😊
Watched many Bourbon videos and SLB Drinks is one of the best , very honest and truthful. Thanx guys from Canada BT
Truly appreciate the honesty! If im going to spend that kind of money, i want juice to match it!
I would love to see you revisit it after its been open for a while. Love Kurt and Trenton on camera together! It seems like that’s what slb is all about.
Def a bottle worthy of a revisit!
Thank you for your honesty. 👍
I certainly understand and agree with Kurt's assessment of the 15 year old. I find the basic George Remus Straight Bourbon pleasant, but thin in mouth feel and weak on flavor. I can see how that flavor trend would continue throughout the Remus line.
I hope you revisit this in a few weeks and let us know if it opens up for better.
Great review guys. Sounds like a really well balanced, good bottle, just not for $250.
I loved Remus V. But I’ll skip buying Remus VI this year, even at $105. There was a liquor store that had older series of Remus, probably the IV. Probably gone by now 😢
I totally agree with your oatmeal note. I kept thinking grainy when I had it the other night but oatmeal is closer.
It was a let down IMO. The Remus V is far superior.
Wild Turkey Master's Keep 17 was 89° out of the barrel. It was only barreled at 107° though. The abnormally low proof came from aging in cool humid ricks where the alcohol evaporated first, Similar to what is commonly seen in scotch.
Thanks for the info!
I gotta adnit that i would have purchased it if i saw it at MSRP but there are many better options for less. I love Bookers and I see more value there, but the limited release is always so tempting. I tend to not buy expensive bottles that have lower proofs and thats the main factor that turns me off of this bottle. We all appreciate the valuable intel from you guys. Thanks a million
Love the honesty!!
It's a $40 bourbon. Wow. This is helpful!!! Thanks for giving the honest review.
Great review!
I know a distillery I used to live near would bring their whiskey back down in proof every 6 months or so during its aging process and then wouldn’t dilute it at the end. Since it was further aged after the last time water was added, I think this would still be considered cask strength by pure definition (whether or not you want to consider it that way is up to you), but maybe a similar process is what they are doing. I talked to the owners once and they did it so they didn’t massively dilute the flavors at the very end.
Thanks for the info!
I love the honesty.
Thanks for your honest . I actually thought about buying it
Great review.
Well, this low cask strength ABV likely means that it was distilled with to low ABV, so should be flavor bomb. It is pricey for the distilleries though, economically better for them to do high abv and dilute afterwards...
I passed on this and took a series 6 and a JMCB. I think I made the right choice.
It's great to get theses honest reviews. We recently had chance to get some Remus Batch 6. But it was $100. I held off on getting it thanks to you guys. That's money I was a le to use to get so.e other great bourbon at a better value. I appreciate what I've learned from you guys in a short time.
Very cool, but I would pass on this too. Thanks for the review, very helpful. Cheers
Time to get that Aurelio's! What a great move by JL👏
Yes sir! Very kind!
KURT-TRENTON!!! This was very interesting!!! You'd think at that price point, it would knock your socks off. This is a good lesson. Let your taste buds be your guide!! Great video!!! CHEERS!!!!
You would think so Tim but doesn’t always relate to that. Unfortunately
At 7:57 you can hear Trent’s stomach growl after Kurt describes mamas home made oat meal 😂😂😂
I’ll have to look out for this bottle!
😂
Great video you guy's, nice looking bottle but after tasting I noticed a bit of disappointment which happens from time to time. Prices are getting ridiculous on more than limited edition bottles that's for sure and we are all hurting from it. I have a Remus V and enjoy it very much, but can't see paying 250.00 for a bottle that I haven't tasted already to know it could be a mistake to put that cash out on. Like you always say, "drink what you like how you like because everyone's taste is different and if you can afford it, do it". Ok, maybe you don't say exactly that but it one way to look at it! Again thanks to the both of you...
Well said!
You guys were really trying to find happiness in this bottle and really struggled. Thanks for the review!
What a find! Trenton, you’re almost as cool as my son. Good job, Kurt! 😊
Man o man, you guys have definitely stepped in to the deep end..........Gatsby, Unforgotten, KC 18, Willet Purple Top. Yowza! Really as someone who might buy one of these sometime in the future, I appreciate your honest feedback. I have heard the Purple Top take some hits as not worth the money. Will you be reviewing that? Cheers and great review.
Hope to get to that one very soon!
I've been really weighing the new price hikes on these older aged bourbons against the more affordable scotches at the same age. Like Kurt, I really do prefer scotch, if all things are equal, and when they're not equal more scotch is on my shelf these days. I think the American single malt is going to be impressing me more in the future.
Hoping to get to that American single malt show soon!
Love all of your videos! Currently driving from New Jersey to south bend for the notre dame game. Any suggestions on good spots to stop for a bourbon haul?
I reside in South Bend! City Wide liquor on Grape Road, any Blarney Stone, any Belmont and any Chalet Party Shoppes :)
@@coreyschroeder8593 you’re the man!
Sorry if this is late but Bees liquor in Hobart. Hopefully you found some good bottles in South Bend!
@@slbdrinks Found some Bardstown Discovery series that isn’t available near me!
Heaven Hill, George Dickel, Starlight, and even a Four Roses Private Barrel pick, have all been cask strengths lower than 100 proof in my experience.
This came into my store in Virginia, and by the time we opened, we had online orders for 4 of the 6 of them. I managed to get one because it was supposed to be allocated, but it ended up being available for purchase. Since I'm late to comment, give it time to open up. It's still not worth $250. But it gets better. On the funny side, I said the same thing about the cork being heavy, plus mine broke.
I had a chance to get Remus v.... kicking myself lol
I passed as well when it was originally released. Luckily Trent found one months later.
Thanks!
Blue Note 17 is CS under 100 proof. Delicious juice too!
We just did get our first bottle! Very hard to come by up here.
I just bought a wilderness trail “family reserve” rye that is cask strength. It’s only 102 proof. I was surprised as well to see a cask strength at such low proof. I suppose it means that they are putting it in the barrels at a much lower proof than the norm… not sure. It’s a delicious rye by the way.
Haven’t had the rye so thanks for the info!
$250 is a tough price point - it is hard to define just what one should reasonably expect for such a price premium. And with bourbon, you pay big for extra age, and extra age doesn't always improve a bourbon. Knob Creek, IMO, is ideal at 12 years, less so at 15, and your wallet's a heckuva lot thinner.
DId the label say what mashbill this is? It would be fun to compare this with a good Smokewagon UCUF, which IMO can be MGP at its very best.
Not quite sure on the mash bill but that’s a great question!
Great video
7:57 Someone got instant bubble guts…😂
Trenton’s hunger rumble lol
Mgp bought Lux row and let them take over managing the distillery, they then officially re-named to Ross and squib about a year ago.
Thanks for the info!
I think the less than favorable response to Remus VI is due to the fact that stocks of well aged MGP are lower that last year and you can only do so much with what you have. Facts of life, I guess. Trent's favorable view of Knob Creek 9 gets total credability in my book.
$250 allocated is quite easier to find than $35 allocated. Cool bottle.
Bought bottle this week at distillery. Love it! Is it worth 250.00 no. But honestly nothing should be sold at that price but that’s the market. I’m a huge beam fan and I loved this 15yr. Not as good as the knob creek 18 but still a awesome pour.
I have a 15 yr Dickel single barrel at cask strength that's 82 proof. Different barrels had very different proofs
Correct! Thanks for the info!
Orphan barrel copper tongue was cask strength at like 86%
Was going to say the same thing!
I wonder..... will that evaluation change after some time passes? Recently I heard you say that after a bottle is below the neck and a few weeks/ months can pass, that a bottle gets better.... I usually only have one bottle at a time so... they don't last long. :)
I never judge a bottle till it's half finished!
Def a bottle to revisit.
In regards to the comparison of Remus VI to ECBP the one thing I'll say is that even though there is inevitably batch differences at least ECBP is offering a consistent 12yr product and the MSRP is still a very fair price. The Remus series are more different batch to batch. I honestly feel like Remus VI is just a cash grab on the heels of Remus V. Every release before VI had no younger than 10yr whiskey and there was a lot of older stuff too, especially last year. Now we get VI that is 8yr to 10yr and they jack up the price. I'm not even going to give them credit for that splash of 14yr (0.5oz per bottle). I was so excited for Remus VI after how good V was. I didn't expect a repeat of V, but VI is a big let down. ECBP is older, barrel strength, and cheaper. I'll just buy an extra bottle of ECBP instead of that Remus VI.
I have to agree, ECBP is probably one of the best bargains in bourbon! Consistently good!
Some say there was less higher aged bourbon to pick from at MGP but that seems a bit fishy. Huge success with V so make VI cheaper and charge more money because you know people will buy due to last years win. True / False?? Not sure but not a good look.
Russels 03 was cask strength at around 90 proof
Thanks for saving us all that money!
The Remus V was a 5th anniversary bottle that's why it had older bourbon
Def a fantastic bottle!
Trenton’s “mustache” keeps staring at me….mocking…plotting….haunting my dreams.
😂
Just fyi: Ross & Squibb is what MGP is called now. They renamed the distillery.
Thank you!
Oatmeal is best made with milk not water! 😅 great show Gents!
I am not the oatmeal eater but my wife is. I have, just not a big fan of the texture.
Is it a rum barrel.
Hey i was wondering. Have you ever had the Wild Turkey rare breed rye? I am from New York and my nephew brought it out last night. It is delicious!!
I have and yes it is very good!
I was very disappointed in the Remus 6. Maybe they should have blended the Gatsby juice into the 6 and we would have gotten something more similar to Remus 3-5...
Maybe lol
Is the lower proof from low entry plus time?
Lower entry proof into the barrel for sure.
Being that high proof, do you think a little water would bring out additional flavors?
It’s possible. Never hurts to try.
Glad you guys were honest on this review. Sorry you blew $250 for it.
How about a calumet 15 to compare it’s around 120 so
15 years Cascade Moon barrel proof is 39.9% alc./vol.
Friendly note.... MGP ha changed names to Ross & Squib.
Thanks for the info!
😳 want this! Back to triangle soon 😂
I'd be all in if the glass bottle was Lalique crystal with a 10 carat gold top. Otherwise not so sure?
Those expensive bottles are always a gamble. Hopefully Trent will realize that soon lol!
I have seen some malts with significant age statements that have eye poppingly low proof.
Add this to your revisit list but do it blind!
We will soon!
I was skeptical of the Remus brand being a boy from Kentucky were bourbon is king. Remus is good, but I would not pay $250 for this. The cheaper bottles (the 5 or 6) of the brand are decent and actually have a more fruity pilot to it.
Thanks guys! Don’t get any of the fancy Remus line here in 🇨🇦, just the regular George Remus. I WOULD love to have even just the empty bottle for an infinity bottle. Giveaway idea? 😉🥃👊
Would love to figure out a fair and equitable way to give away our infinity bottles.
@@slbdrinks how about a livestream? Every super chat gets an entry and at the end you draw for a sweet infinity bottle!
I took a screenshot of this idea. Thanks!
@@slbdrinks no worries! Love the channel. Please check mine out if you get a chance! 👊🥃
Just subscribed! Looking forward to your content!
Kurt I enjoy the shows you do by yourself but adding Trent makes them even better
The kid is doing a great job! Glad he finally decided to be a part of the show!
@@slbdrinks you got to get your wife in a least one episode
Still have my Remus I...waiting for a good day
Wow, that’s pretty cool!
MGP is now called Ross & Squibb. Has been for a while now. Just so you know….
Thanks for the info! Not fond of the name change but what are you gonna do??!
At that price, try it again in a month when it’s opened up and not a neck pour. Doubt it’ll live up to the value, but worth a second chance.
Most definitely will need to revisit at a later date!
I'm with Trenton Knob Creek 9 Year is the best 😄🥃
Greta video as always!
Thanks buddy!
At least we didn't get a sweet tarts. Should do a pairing with Halloween candy episode.
He would love that 😂
I realize I'm watching this a few months after the fact but I'm wondering if this opened up. Obviously neck pours aren't always the best.
Trenton I got some bottles for you next time you wanna come to central indiana. on the house
Thanks Mark!
