I seen this video a year ago or more. I might know why he did that odd about face run! earlier in the day or the prior he must have discovered a wasp nest or bee hive. it's common in the area. explains his creeping up to the brush and also looking back several times after he distanced himself. and if a large male bear scents a human like he did he should be considered a bear to be cautious of.
Right on Marc. Your explanation makes total sense. My gut feeling was this boar spotted a larger bear in the bush, we didn't notice any insect bees as we walked about 1/2 mile through the grasses. Appreciate your view!
Obviously there's no wasp nest or larger bear that presented itself. So with how intelligent brown bears/grizzly bears are. I think this was a rare case of a instigating move on the sneaky bears part. I think he was trying to prevoke panic or someone to run. And people remaining calm was epic intelligence that was rewarding in that nobody got attacked. Just my opinion. Sneaky bear.

Please people, before you come visit Alaska, or any northern state at least google what to do if you're approached by a bear. I have a terrifying suspicion that you didn't even have a gun or mace. This year we lost 10 people to bears on the peninsula alone, none of them were carrying personal defense and none of them were found.
Ginger Dog....when we arrived at Homer, the guide service gave a class on interactions with bears and what to expect. They did say, we won't get the close up photos that we hoped for. No guns or mace allowed on Katmai preserve. The dang guide had a whistle to draw any bear away from an attack. Go figure, a WHISTLE!! First and last time like this in the bush. Thanks for the home bred advice!

Hi Tru blood. We booked a flight to Katmai to photo grizzly bears. 4 hour walking tour up the Geographic Bay water shed. We stopped counting at 40 different bears. Many of the bears were just feeding on salmon but this 1 boar circled us several times. Then he made the run towards our group. No guns or mace allowed on a preserve in Alaska. “I know we’re not _supposed_ to, but when you’re in bear territory you better have a sidearm with you just in case.”
The guy said he had two in the car, and the ranger suggested he went and retrieved them, and not to worry about the sidearms rules because everyone on the park staff carry sidearms and it would be wise to do so the same.”
It goes to show you, sometimes rules can be implemented with honourable intentions, but in reality they cause more problems than they solve.
If a bear jumps out at you and you don’t have time to get your rifle up, or if the bears too close to you for your rifle to be any practical help, a sidearm gives you an extra level of protection, and is also far more versatile than a rifle.

How tall are they? And are they bigger looking than the ones in Montana?

This year we lost 10 people to bears on the peninsula alone, none of them were carrying personal defense and none of them were found.
Ginger Dog....when we arrived at Homer, the guide service gave a class on interactions with bears and what to expect. They did say, we won't get the close up photos that we hoped for. You can hear the audio recording of Grizzly Man: Timothy Treadwell Being Eaten Alive By A Bear on youtube as an example. The amazing thing is that you probably don't know that you had 2 close encounters on your ill-guided trip, ( ill-guided because no one is allowed to take sight seers to within feet of a hungry Grizzly Bear...illegal in fact...It's up to you to start legal proceedings against the stupid guides)! The second encounter was when you where inadvertently saved by the Abominable creature in the bushes! It scared the Bear in your video so badly that the bear went into another world in it's mind! It's eyes tell an encyclopedia of information! It's mannerism's, of repeatedly looking over it's shoulders back at where the creature in the bushes warned it away tell an amazing story! If your guides say that it was scared off by another bear in the bushes then they illegally endangered you by putting you close to 2 Large Grizzly's! Of course the actions of the Bear that ran away describe a different creature. Here is a place to start learning about your encounter, "Steve Isdal's youtube channel called "factsbyhowtohunt"!
