LG Wing 5G hands-on: Surprisingly practical

- When it comes to offering more screen real estate on a smartphone, manufacturers have two options: either go with a flexible display à la Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2, or attach a secondary screen like the LG Velvet. While the latter is obviously the easier (and cheaper) option, both implementations have a common problem: multi-tasking only works well when both apps are in portrait orientation, due to the design of most apps.
This can be a big problem. If I watch RUclips and Netflix videos in landscape, but then load Twitter or Facebook on the bottom half of the phone, these would be stretched wide, making it difficult to read text or view images. This is where the LG Wing 5G’s bizarre swivel-screen design comes in, and having used a pre-production unit for about a week (and having used both the Velvet and the Galaxy Fold), this is by far my favorite multi-screen phone yet.

This would be the perfect phone for Uber drivers. Run the app on the main screen and the GPS navigation on the smaller screen.

Stop asking for lighter phones, I don't mind my phone being a little heavy for more battery life.

Just got one yesterday, upgraded from a V40. Very impressive and love the size and heft. I was initially going to go with a V60 but after 4 V phones, I was ready for a switch and will never buy another phone brand. Highly recommend this model.

This is exactly what lg needs to get back into the phone industry
LG and Sony are the underdog companies yet, they are the most innovative.
Sony is just god awful at marketing. It doesn’t help your brand when your naming scheme is so convoluted that most people will forget what your last phone was called. LG hasn’t necessarily made any missteps though, I’m surprised they aren’t more popular
If Apple had released the Wing, the tech community would have treated it like the second Coming

I haven't been all that bothered or tempted by foldable or dual screen phones so far, but this looks pretty cool, it's the first one to make me think it's something I might like to check out.
I would definitely consider buying this phone in its second generation.

From 2021 here. This phone didn't do as well as LG hoped it would. Any future iteration of it may not come to fruition. Still, as far as first gen devices go, this actually is surprisingly well thought out and definitely much better executed than so many that have come before it (Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy Fold, LG G5, Galaxy Round, etc.).
Love LG for pushing the boundaries. Tempted to purchase one when available but also willing to wait for the Wing 2 if it comes out later.

Tip: You can speed up the swivel or rotation animation on the main screen by changing the transition animation scale from 1.0 to 0.5 or off in the developer options. It changes instantly on my Wing.

I have this phone. Whew this thing is a winner. I can finally have a multi-tasking device in my pocket. Cameras are good too. You can do gimbal videos, take sharp and clear photos, and still shoot 80 mbps 4K60 videos. It still even has pro mode for videos and photos.
Thinking about dropping my current network provider, also they phasing out my older phone that I've been using in January, Not sure why they don't offer phones to long time users .
I have experienced different faults from my verizon postpaid account but,i feel verizon just setup shop to rip me and other customers,i have met my foe with verizon,my clear opinion about them are bad and see myself not using them,except i can get the help i need with resolving the issues i have with them with my verizon unlimited postpaid account.
@Arthur Javier You can cancel any line except the recently upgraded line and the new line . Also , how was false churn not be passed on to the customer yet ? If you cancel one of the 2 lines thats not involved in the promo , thats fine . would recommend waiting until you see the BOGO credits on your bill before cancelling an old line though

All explorer projects devices will not have a headphone jack but new future ultra premium project rainbow flagship will have quad dac for sure acording to Lg.
@Chelle Hey Chelle. We don't necessarily sell our devices and tend to keep using things until they completely die. I may not use the phone for more than 2 years myself, but will pass it on to a family member or to someone in need. My Mom is currently using my old Samsung Galaxy S6, my Dad was using my old Galaxy S3 for the longest time, my brother just upgraded from his iPhone 6+. I currently use a LG phone with an 845 chipset. Why will I want to buy a phone with a 765 chipset that basically performs the same as my 845 from 2 years ago, costs a bomb and doesn't have flagship features like the quad DAC which I use everyday.
@@mikig2 actually after doing some research it turns out the 765g is comparable to a 855, but video processing chipset is equal to 845.

Qualcomm is to blame for cheaper processor real life doesn't make much to a 865G. Take google for an example

I hope this sells well enough for LG to continue refining it. I mean how many more ordinary slabs do we really need? We’ve pretty much hit the point of diminishing returns anyway
Not to mention this slight innovation is adding in a way that doesn't take away already existing features (for the most part). I can get behind this being the temporary standard for awhile!
They need custom versions of apps, RUclips with comments at the bottom is one example

I just ordered one today from Verizon on sale for $750. I like the idea that i can watch a video and text or look something up on google at the same time. I also like that i can hold it more comfortably when watching vids. For me it seems extremely useful for the things i do every day. I dont need the "best" camera,processor, screen,etc... for $2000. This has a good mix of practical uses and decent hardware at a reasonable price.

I believe you can change the keyboard location either on bottom screen or top...

Why using mid range SoC instead of Flagship one? It will cost more, but it will make this phone more proper on demanding multitasking work.

This is an interesting concept. Please make a smaller version of it. This 6.8 inch is huge and heavy for my lifestyle.

would love to get this phone to switch from iPhone, would prefer a smaller size one, 5G is not a big deal for me on a phone until some useful functions come along.
I definitely agree what's the bottom screen being used to type messages when in swivel mode obviously just a bit of a speed upgrade as well, and my one major gripe please put a second speaker on this thing one at the bottom and one at the top or something it kills me that this doesn't have stereo or just two separate speakers so one speaker sounds great I seriously just wish there was a second one on this phone but other than that it's a great hopefully they make a super heavy duty case to protect the full body of the phone in the future

I only wish it had Snapdragon 865 or something in that range. As i am coming from an LG V30, i wish to have something stronger, rather than equally strong (after 3 years of use i would def want a bit more power, to keep up with time). I can deal with all other things, like no jack and DAC etc
Definitely agree a gen 2 with larger second screen would be better. This one is a bit small to justify all the complexity/price.

This phone is amazing it has the sharp sidekick vibe been Apple user for 15 yrs and was waiting for a phone to take me out of that comfort zone. I agree wish had stronger processor but for beta test phone looks good am switching hoping LG keeps this concept hoping lg wing 2 would be out of this world.

It's a smart concept. Certainly more durable than a folding phone. It's probably more economical too. But, I would like to see more on it's hardware. If it's running a cut-rate processor, then it's not likely to work nearly as well as I'd like.

I sincerely wish Samsung and LG come up with proper keyboards as as slider instead of second screens. Or atlesst a Bluetooth keyboard case for note 20 ultra etc

This is not the first time that LG made a phone like this it was years ago it was on Verizon it was called...LG VX9400 it was small in your hand and you flipped it up. So they always been doing some futuristic phones here and there This is a good one again for 2021..
I just got my LG Wing today. Are you having any issues downloading the app without having to use the WIFI? It keeps forcing me to download apps through wifi when I have unlimited data.
I love it, if they fix the typing/keyboard part I might even buy it for my next phone

Looks like the earpiece is behind the swivel screen, and there is some sort of indentation in the back of the swivel screen that lines up with the earpiece. Is this some sort of acoustic pass-through? Does it affect speaker quality when you take a phone call? How come none of that was talked about in this hands-on?

My main purpose to get this phone was to use the swivel display up top and to write messages from the bottom to the top but you can't even do that?! So disappointed that was going to be the main reason why I got this over the note ultra. Can anyone confirm if this is still the case or has there been any updated to allow this feature?
