  • Most people have four tiny parathyroid glands (PTs) in the neck that produce the hormone responsible for regulating the balance of calcium and phosphorous in the blood. If one or more PT glands becomes enlarged or overactive (hyperparathyroidism), it may be necessary to surgically remove the gland. UCLA is now one of the few centers in the country where experts are using 4D computed tomography (CT) to pinpoint the exact location of hard-to-find abnormal PT glands, enabling surgeons to perform more efficient procedures with excellent outcomes.

I had a nuclear scan done which was negative. An ultrasound which was negative. Elevated Calcium and PTH. Told by Endocrinologist my corrected calcium was fine and I was just tired because I had had Covid six months prior. Insisted on a referral to a surgeon who specializes in endocrine surgeries who ordered this CT Scan and BAM! My neck lit up like a Christmas Tree! So please I urge everyone to be your own advocate!

      Hi 😊
Thank you for your post. Within the week my blood work showed an abnormality in the parathyroid gland. As of right now I had a basic ultrasound a couple of days ago. We were unable to visualize the parathyroid gland (s). At this point I know a little bit about things but I'm quickly learning.

I have advocated in the healthcare space for others for decades. Financial situations insurance and clinical to be sure that everyone has a voice, get educated and be able to decide what to do for themselves. I appreciate all your advice and guidance.

What indeed if every scan shows no result. Negative scans do NOT mean there is no disease. What happens next, can there be an exploration? I have had two previous surgeries, one for parathyroid gland, one for thyroidectomy. Now again hyperparathyroid, nothing shows. I am completely miserable.

Which is better: pet-methionine scan or the 4D CT one to localise an adenoma?

So, what if your ct scan, is negative, sesamibi scan is negative, and ultra sound scan is negative??? Than what?????

I could be wrong... but I think there is a difference between regular ct scan and 4D CT scan. Maybe ask your doctor about that.
