Hmm, Nikki's outfit reminds me of Kristy in The Baby-Sitters Club, the movie of which came out in 1995. And both of them seem to have aspects of Mary-Kate and Ashley as well, which would be the late 90s. Their style also seem to represent a bit of Cher from Clueless (1995) and the great Nickelodeon shows we had in the 90s like Alex Mack and Clarissa Explains It All. I also love the Lisa Frank-inspired décor, that was my life in the 90s.
As someone who is their "peer" (I'm two years older than they canonically are) I chuckle every time someone's dissing the shirt+vest combo. It's not "laziness", we were all wearing pieces like that back then😉. I honestly really liked them as a kid and had a lot of sweater/vest+shirt tops like that. I guess it's quite early to do a '90s historical dolls because a lot of those fashion trends aren't very recognizable as "historical" yet.
I love them! I do wish they had more unique names 🙄 but as a 10 year old in 1999, I’m completely obsessed with these dolls. They are perfect! I do plan to give Nicki green eyes to match her sister. The Book It set was a must have for me - I ordered two right away! It brings back a lot of memories from elementary school.

If Mattel was SMART they should have based them on 94'-96' and done a whole event celebrating the American Girl of Today/Pleasant Company and re-released a portion of the popular 90s outfits and brought back the old facemolds they retired like jly 4 as a best friend to the twins. Then gave Nicki and Isabel outfits that resemble the old 90s outfits (and not the cheap fast fashion outfits they gave them) that would have been AMAZINGGG but unfortunately..that is asking too much of Mattel

I just got Nicki, and my sister got Isabel! It took us a while to find good dolls with no defects, especially Isabel! It was a nightmare, but at least we have them now!
The “articles” section on the AG website has an interesting article on Nicki and Isabel’s personalities, interests, and relationship. Their journals were also written by twins who worked together. One twin had Isabel and the other had Nicki. They are interviewed in the article.

Not getting either one of the dolls but I'd say Nikki is definitely my preference from her outfit to her hair color and I'm glad that she at least has a nice quality wig and I hope this isn't just a one time thing AG is doing. I just ordered the Pizza Hut set. I feel like it's a bit overpriced and I'm still bewildered as to WHY they didn't include TWO cups instead of one. However...it feels the most versatile out of all the items in the collection and can fit perfectly in any set up. I always hated the weird girly heart shaped Pizza AG likes to sell. The Pizza Hut set is more realistic, more authentic. It's also the most nostalgic thing for me (and I LOVED pizza as a kid. Still do.)

The dolls are very pretty however I think I'mma just wait until Christmas to get Isabel and it's mostly having to do it with in regards that they release the dolls during Black History month this should have been claudie's time to shine and mind you she hasn't even been released for that long but I would definitely change Isabel to at least a clothing style reminiscent of the '90s because they look like the early 2000s

I just ordered Nicki for my collection!! I'm so excited for her! Although I'm partial to the original book styles, I do kind of like the journals. I have always struggled with reading, and when I first started getting into AG it was hard to read the books. I feel like the journals would be an easier read, especially for kids who may have reading/learning disabilities like myself.
Just went for the first time today to American Girl Dallas. I am a adult collector and have wanted Josephina for my collection forever and my husband bought her for me. Honestly I think american girl should have used the Caroline eyes for Isabelle vs the felicity eyes, it would have been different yet closer to nikkis eyes than the super neon green eyes lol but it still looks good. Nikki is my favorite how ever
I kinda don’t like that both dolls have repetitive names… nor do I care for the constant “julie” face mold AG does all the time anymore. I have a soft spot for the classic mold and other molds should have the spotlight. Overall they’re cute dolls. But I dunno, i have conflicted feelings about them. Maybe they’ll grow on me!
They have the joss mold. And the “Julie” mold you’re referring to is called the Josefina mold. The joss mold has only been used on 2 other character dolls and a few of the truly me dolls it’s not over used. (This is not supposed to come off as rude in any way)
i love nicki and isabel is okay. i like nicki’s skateboarding outfit but her overalls aren’t as cute as kits. still love it though! i don’t love the skateboard because of the clear pieces because i prefer the other skateboard from like 2012 (i have it). i feel like that older skateboard is better if the doll is jsut holding the skateboard if that makes sense. i’m sad that isabel’s tennis outfit is a dress not two pieces. i wish her meet outfit was not a one piece shirt as well. they are both cute dolls though! I loveee nicki’s hat i think it is so cute and i love the color! i think that nicki’s and isabel’s pajamas are sooo adorable and definitely something that reminds me of the 90s.

You are NOT being dramatic. Regardless of doll price, when you purchase new, you have a right to expect perfection. When you pony up how much an AG doll actually costs, even more so.

They look nice and all and there is absolutely nothing wrong with their characters but I was really hoping for an Asian as a Historical doll for the 90s and/or early 2000s. Asian characters are so underrepresented in American Girl outside of the GotY line. Z was barely out an entire year before the contemporary line was cancelled and Ivy is incredibly hard to find and literally the only Asian historical doll we’ve gotten and it’s only for part of one decade when Chinese people have been coming to the US since the 1800s and have their parts in other decades too and she was in a side line as a secondary character doll. There are already four black dolls in the line, Kaya seems to not going to retire anytime soon as she represents indigenous peoples of the US who have always been a part of US history even before it had begun, and Josefina as a Latina girl in a part of the US that has a rich culture and history. Please just give us *one* Asian doll that is a Historical Character with her own book and collection that isn’t part of anyone else’s!
I just thought of the perfect way to incorporate an Asian American Historical doll if they wanted to use the 90s and early 2000s as the time period. The girl is the daughter of someone or even two people who had managed to escape Vietnam during the war and they keep telling her how much living in the US as a free citizen means to them and the girl doesn’t understand what that means. Then 9/11 happens and the girl finally understands what her parent(s) had meant about living in a free country.

Honestly, I've been on eBay & Poshmark too much lately, because I've become accustomed to full (retired to vintage) outfits costing $10-25, so when I heard that one of Nicki's outfits was $40, I practically went into shock lol

They are cute, but what bothers me about them is that it's pure nostalgia bait. They could have set the story in the early/mid 2000s and had their dad deployed in Iraq. They could have involved 9/11 somehow. They could have at the very least acknowledge Columbine. Kids STILL have these anti bullying rallies and active shooter drills in schools now, so reading about it wouldn't have been more traumatic than having to do it! They play it so safe that these two might as well be modern dolls who dress in an early 2000s style (which is modern/trendy again anyway). A historical should be educational beyond "Look, this is an OLD computer and this is a landline phone". That's the kind of stuff their parents will tell them and that they will naturally see in classic movies from that time that are still popular today.

I just wish things weren't so expensive. But other than that I love watching your videos and I hope that everything's going well for you and that you are doing well and that you're doing okay. Honestly, I've been on eBay & Poshmark too much lately, because I've become accustomed to full (retired to vintage) outfits costing $10-25, so when I heard that one of Nicki's outfits was $40, I practically went into shock lol

They are cute, but what bothers me about them is that it's pure nostalgia bait. They could have set the story in the early/mid 2000s and had their dad deployed in Iraq. They could have involved 9/11 somehow. They could have at the very least acknowledge Columbine. Kids STILL have these anti bullying rallies and active shooter drills in schools now, so reading about it wouldn't have been more traumatic than having to do it!
They play it so safe that these two might as well be modern dolls who dress in an early 2000s style (which is modern/trendy again anyway). A historical should be educational beyond "Look, this is an OLD computer and this is a landline phone". That's the kind of stuff their parents will tell them and that they will naturally see in classic movies from that time that are still popular today.
