Another fantastic video Rory. I've taken somewhat of an unintended hiatus from flying videos for a good while - but it was great to see you in a group pic on Facebook with Plane Old Ben and the Flying Reporter. It reminded me of your channel. And it's been a treat going through some of the new content catching up where I left off. The quality of your videos is top-notch. Proper broadcast quality all round as far as I'm concerned.
Rob S thanks Rob - very kind of you and I’m glad you’ve come back to the various channels. It was great to see the guys in person as I watch all their content too. I’m flattered you think it’s broadcast quality. I do my best with the gear and the time I have. 👍
Superb Rory and well supported by Lizi. Gaining your licence and undertaking these kind of trips is what flying is all about! To experience overflying a commercial and the sort of views only flying can give of the bridges just awesome.
Thanks Mike. It was a brilliant trip and it felt really good to push myself. Several people have said this is what the licence is all about - I just can't wait to do more flights like this now!
Yep, well worth waiting for. A fantastic adventure for you and Lizi, taking such a monumental trip on with so many firsts. Part of the fun of flying is feeling the butterflies in your stomach leading up, and then coping with a bit of stress (and sometimes iffy RT en route). When the butterflies stop, so does a big part of the enjoyment. Well done! You should be proud of yourselves.
Kevin Chilton cheers Kevin - I think you’re right about the nerves. They are good barrier to complacency which is a killer. It was a great trip and I’m looking forward to more now.
Great vid, Rory. Jealous of the weather over the lakes, every time I fly that way it’s raining over Ambleside! Don’t worry about the RT (I’ve been controlling for way too long & still fluff my lines sometimes) the controller corrected the readback which is what he’s there for. Looking forward to the return, Chris
Thanks Chris - that makes me feel better about it. It wasn't so much the fluffing, more the poor decision to make it up rather than ask for it again but I have learned and wont do that again. You controllers do a brilliant job and I appreciate it. Thanks for watching.
@@RoryOnAir Type Rating Examiner dude. I train and examine commercial pilots on the A320 series aircraft. Your R/T is excellent, something that often is left lacking in GA. The more professional you sound the easier the entry into controlled airspace! Trust me, I have several ATCO pals! 😉
Martin Wheeler ah that’s really cool Martin. Thanks for your comment about my RT. I really try to be correct and on the ball with it partly as a matter of pride as I work in broadcast radio but also because I know it’s the only way a controller can tell my level of competency. I guess I want to try and set a reasonable example on here too.
Hello Rory. Your most ambitious flight and your most ambitious video. Really excellent work - I thoroughly enjoyed it. Please pass on to Lizi how struck I was by the way she sensed the tension you must have been experiencing about that low cloud and high ground (and, I'm guessing, internally beating yourself up about the call to the tower) and then gave that wonderful support. For me, as a psychologist, and not a pilot, that was probably the best bit of the video 😉. I very much admire you leaving in those more tricky moments. Easy to empathise that it must feel humiliating when you hear that word 'Negative' after a read back. Really professionally created video, and those added extras from Lizi on the camera also added to that. Very well done all round. All the best - Paul
Paul Markman thanks so much Paul. That’s really interesting hearing that from someone with your skill set. Lizi obviously knows me very well and despite me doing my best to internalise my concerns she picked up on it and offered that support. I know it’s a long one, but I’m chuffed with this video and delighted the feedback has been great. Thanks for watching and for your comment. Cheers, Rory.
Splendid video, nay splendiferous. I like that you keep your gaffes in (like the Flying Reporter does too). One of the things that has put me off learning to fly for many a year is the thoughts of “what if I do it wrong!”, or “I’m bound to get it wrong”. Your videos show me I could do it too... cheers.
Jed Wigmore thanks very much - I’m glad that’s how it comes across. Jon is great at sharing his mistakes and he’s a very good pilot. I hope it’s helpful and it’s certainly more realistic to share the good with the not so good. You can definitely do it!
Again Rory a fantastic video I so enjoyed it and I'm glad you didn't get it all perfect shows you're human! but you made a superb job of the trip and Lizi is such a great co-pilot your are one lucky man enjoy every moment what a sense of achievement you must have had and deservedly so !!! Well done you both. Thanks Nick
Nick Rae thanks Nick, I am very lucky to be able to fly and Lizi is brilliant. It was such a good trip for all kinds of reasons and I’m certainly learning a lot from this kind of flying. Thanks for watching!
So cool, well done! Don't worry about the radio, that's what read backs are for. Your first call, while you could have given a position, you didn't have to, callsign only was fine. I'm learning at Liverpool and I hear a lot worse on a sunny weekend day! Look forward to the next one.
Thanks very much Stuart. I do my best to be as professional and accurate to CAP413 as possible but sometimes the other things get in the way. I guess that's why I was taught Aviate, Navigate, Communicate.
I share a similar goal. CAP413 itself is not 100% though! Some of the phraseology examples it gives are confusing and condtradictory. Hope to do my QXC this weekend and possibly skills test next week. Your videos fill me with inspiration of what to do post qualifying :)
Excellent work - both in terms of the video content and the flying achievement. The footage from Lizi's seat just added that final touch of class too. More than deserving of a 1000 subs by Christmas! Keep them coming :-)
Airlite X thanks so much. The extra camera shots do make a big difference. It’s helps me in the edit a lot too. Fingers crossed for the 1k milestone...
Thanks Heath, I'm delighted you enjoyed it. It really is fabulous fun and if you have the means you definitely should crack on and get back in the air. Good luck and don't forget to subscribe!
That's a cracking trip and video. Don't envy you reading back instructions received from a Jock over a crackly radio! The central column on C42 makes it difficult to write instructions unless you are left handed. My instructor gives an instant PFL is you take your hand off the throttle which makes it even harder.
Thanks very much! Well having been born and brought up in Orkney until I was about 18 I have a leg up on the accent, but it was very crackly. You're spot on about the making notes and I have briefed Lizi well on not touching the throttle. There aren't enough hands!
Wow. Wow. Wow. Absolutely amazing Rory :) I can only hope that I have grown big enough goolies to take a trip like that when I have my licence! Love what you do. Huge well done. Nicola & Gary
Gary Chadbond thanks! I never thought I would either - only in the last few months have I built enough confidence to do it. It was fantastic and you’ll have great fun doing it too. All in good time. 👍

What a brilliant video Rory and well worth the wait. Actually, I thought you handled it (Tower Call) really well. Of course we all aim for perfection but in reality, you handled it brilliantly Rory. I have been in similar situations previously and didn't do as well as you did. Lessons for us all. Btw Lizi was awesome too and very supportive which we can all learn from. Your videos keep getting better and better, best on RUclips I think. Ralph
FlyingMoodys thanks very much Ralph. I really appreciate the encouragement and I’m glad you enjoyed it. I think the main thing is to recognise what could be improved and try again next time - filming everything is a big help with that. Lizi was great - she’s very easy to fly with so I’m a lucky husband all round. All the best, Rory
Excellent stuff Rory, I’m a PPL student at Fife myself so I’ve been looking forward to watching this, shame I wasn’t around on the day! Been enjoying the videos for a while now, keep up the good work! James
Steele Studios thanks very much James - glad you enjoy them. Yeah, shame we didn’t bump into each other, I’m always up for meeting new people. Next time..!
Simply brilliant, a must watch and leaves me wanting to get back in to flying, perhaps this time in a 3 axis instead of the PA 28 I was previously flying.
And now that I've watched the whole video, I can say that it left me buzzing. I really want to do this; what you have done in this flight video is my dream. I can imagine there is a lot of stress making sure you're talking to the right people at the right time, but it must be so cool to be able to just jump into a plane with the better half, a parent, or a friend and just have a flying day like this. See you in the skies one day I hope.
Good and instructive video, thank you. I think I would have been worried that the controller was expecting me to land at Edinburgh if he asked me to position on right base.
Great trip and an excellent video Rory. Superb support from Lizi both in the cockpit and behind the camera. Well done to the both of you! (Don't know why you were worried about your radio work it was good to me and I often find that I hear things in the edit that I didn't hear at the time.)
Jodel Flyer thanks very much Tim. I’m very lucky that Lizi is so enthusiastic and helpful in the cockpit - it makes a big difference. It is amazing how much you get from a ‘second viewing’ of a flight. Cheers!
Just found this video and it’s great. Fife is my local airport as I’m from Glenrothes. I’ve recently started my lessons in a c42 at balado airfield in Kinross just off to the west a little bit. Worth a visit if you haven’t yet. Can’t wait till the restrictions are lifted and I can get back in the aircraft.
Hi Paul, welcome and that’s great you’re flying yourself. I was told about Balado after this trip and I follow them on insta. I see there has been a lot of building work going on there? I definitely hope to visit the area again - ideally in the helicopter. Cheers, Rory
@@RoryOnAir That would be great! Yes. Quite a bit work on going there the now. They have built three new hangers and work is on going for a new control tower. hopefully completed in the next few months. Should bring in a nice range of aircraft.
@@RoryOnAir yes it's great. I'm actually surprised at how many small airfields there actually are. Hopefully more prosper when we can get back it to it!
You appear to beat yourself up quite often! I've been watching your channel on the approach of my PPL lessons commencing, and can see you pick things up VERY well, in addition to staying super confident in yourself! I'm dreading the information I'm going to have to learn! Keep up the fantastic videos dude! 8-)
Lewis McMorrow thanks very much Lewis - that’s very nice of you to say. I really enjoy learning new things and I’m sure aviation will be a life long learning curve. Where are you going to be based? Glad you like the vids - I will keep making them. Cheers, Rory.
You're most welcome Rory! & The plan is Manchester Barton, as I live in Manchester.. I'm still learning the processes and the order in which to complete things at the moment, so any pointers will be gratefully received!
Lewis McMorrow ah brilliant! Which school? Drop me a message on my rory on Air Facebook page if you like and we can have a chat there but I’d say the best thing you can do is just book a lesson and get started. The instructors will guide you through everything and then you won’t waste any time of money on stuff you don’t really need.
Brilliant Rory. Great videos. After a hiatus, hope to restart the training at Deanland where The Micro pilot Tom you flew with recently is based in Sussex. I think I will be a little slower at learning than you youngsters (61 years young!) but I'll persevere! I really enjoy your flights/trips and certainly learning a lot... radio still a struggle for me! Cheers. Steve.
MrStevemyname Hi Steve - thanks very much for your comment. I’m delighted you are enjoying my videos and that you’re getting back into flying. From what I have seen at Barton, it does take a little longer when you’re older but that means you will have had more time with an instructor when you pass, giving you the chance to have absorbed more of their knowledge so it’s all good. Everyone is nervous about RT. I was and I work in Radio and present on it! You’ll get the hang of it quicker than you think - I found practising my calls in the car by myself helped. Cheers, Rory.
Thanks for a very enjoyable vid. I plan to visit Barton some time, have relatives in Chorlton, But will need to refuel half way, we only have 2 hours duration.. Also, we need to get a transponder... best of luck for the ALTP (h)
Fantastic video. As a C42 pilot myself it's a pleasure to watch such a well put together, interesting, how it is, video. Keep up the awesome work and keep posting. If you ever consider flying in to Swansea, let me know.
Brilliant, enjoyed that. You guys make a great team, looking forward to checking out the return trip. I’m hoping to bring an aeroplane from Inverness down to the South Coast in the summer and thought about this routing (reversed) so was really good to see the EDI transit. Good stuff.
CR4ZYHOR5E great stuff - I’m glad it was useful to see your proposed route. We came the way you planned on the way back so that might be worth a look. Have a great Christmas.
Love it. I can imagine doing many first in one flight being quite a task but from personal experience the sense of achievement at the end of it is amazing. Im back in Manchester in just over a week and would love to finally meet and even fly in a vid together!!
The MicroPilot thanks mate, and yeah - it felt really good. How long are you back for? I’m on holiday at he moment until the 8th, then I’m home for a couple of days before I go away again for a week. We might manage something - would be good fun to fly.
Thanks Darren - good question. I was worried we'd bake in the heat so I took a C42 because it's shaded. I would have preferred the extra speed in the EV97 but the Ikarus did us proud.
Rory On Air, ok good point I do miss flying the C42 I can’t fly the one at our place anymore as it’s only for training So it’s the Eurostar until I get something my self, by the way I did fly UK last month as a passenger but we shared the flying highly recommend for next year if you could buddy up with someone it definitely brings you on. Taking my son up at the weekend he’s a budding musician in a band, I have watched lots of Rory videos take a look at The Loose Cut you never know if you have 5 mins to fill in the day job. 😀
Darren Weston nice one - i’ll Check them out. Yeah I’d love to do Fly Uk - definitely one for the list when I get a syndicate off the ground. (Pardon the pun)
Just had my first flight experience at Leicester with flight instructor Lawrence in a pa28. Trying to book my helicopter experience today your an inspiration great flight to my homeland Scotland congratulations on your gold stripes rory
@@gustheswampdonkey ah fantastic stuff Angus - good on you. Thanks very much for your support and I hope you enjoy the helicopter when you get to that.
I’m new to your channel, and it’s bloody great. I so wish you would have landed at Cumbernauld, that’s where I live and I’ve flown from there many times in a flex wing microlight. You looked so chuffed with yourself after such a long flight, and rightly so. You did a fantastic job. Keep up the good work, and happy flying.
Thanks very much indeed and welcome to my channel. It was a fantastic trip and I have to admit I was pleased with myself to have made it all that way. I’m sure I’ll be into Cumbernauld at some stage. Have a great Christmas if you can.
Another great video. Isn’t Barton airfield the one that operates the tow paragliding on a weekend morning? Anyway into the next video. Lucky I don’t have much to do at work :). All the best.
Great video Rory. I've just got my GST and some written exams to do then i can apply for my licence. Looking to join mainair once i'm qualified so might see you around!
RoadRunnerLaser yeah, not my best bit of RT but it was all pretty new to me. A great learning experience and hopefully I’ll be much more accurate next time!
Rory On Air - I don't think they really expect anyone to be perfect. They do understand that every new pilot has to start somewhere and many don't train in busy airspace - You flew right past my house, by the way. If I'd have known that you were flying by, I'd have been able to see you from my kitchen window.
RoadRunnerLaser nice one! Yeah, I’m sure that’s true and they were certainly patient with me. I think it’s good to try and improve and be the best you can though eh.
Rory On Air - Oh... of course... Every flight is a learning experience and whilst it is good to identify areas of improvement and errors, it's best not to dwell on them too much, especially when you still have your hand on the stick - Don't let it cause further distraction. Do you do post-flight briefings? That's the ideal time to review mistakes and improve procedures. Recording the whole flight (even if just audio - I know that GoPro batteries aren't the best for endurance) can help if you want to go over your performance with a fine-toothed comb. Editing video for RUclips can make you aware of small mistakes that you might not have noticed in-flight, too. Sometimes it can lead to being hyper-critical but as you said, there is merit in striving for perfection although we should never beat ourselves up too much if we don't achieve it. This is one of the things that I like about the aviation industry and its "culture of no blame" - The focus is on improving safety procedures for all rather than heavily penalising someone for making an error.
Absolutely inspirational and beautiful, my local club has c42s and I am thinking of getting nppl soon so I can have similar adventures. Can't quite pluck up the courage though, which is the only barrier at the moment. Any comforting words of encouragement?
liamcollier2 thanks Liam - it was an amazing adventure. You should absolutely do it!! Have you been up for a trial flight? The time counts towards a your licence if you decide to take it up so it’s a win win. Learning to fly was fabulous - you gain so many new skills and confidence and meet loads of new people plus flying is very cool and not everyone can do it. The C42 is a superb training platform and a very capable aircraft. Go for it!
Really enjoying the videos and I'm finding your RT work very helpful. That knee board: did you make the laminated sheet on it for notes? Would you publish it?
Richard Maher thank you and I’m glad to hear you find it helpful. I have been meaning to do a video about my kneeboard for a while so will try and do one soon. It has a plastic cover on it when you buy it so I just put some white card behind but I then made a laminated sheet with notes for the Radio calls.
Richard Maher I don’t think I have a copy of it anymore but I would be happy to send you a picture of it on email or Facebook messenger for you to copy if that helps?
Really Great episode Rory , even my wife watched it and enjoyed it (hinting that I should start learning to fly ) your an inspiration ! can I totally geek out and as some questions ? how long was your total flight time? how much does a trip like that cost you in terms of fuel ? keep up the good work mate , can't wait for the next episode !!!
Thabani Sibanda brilliant - I’m delighted you both enjoyed it! So it was just over 5 hours total there and back. It cost me £350 to rent the plane and an additional £80 in landing fee and fuel at Fife. You should definitely start learning. Where are you based?
Thanks for the reply Rory, thats not too bad really , im based in Norfolk , Norwich, got any tips for people starting out, things you learned or wish you knew before you started ? (may make a great episode!) really appreciate your channel and all you do mate !
Mate, people make mistakes. I can't tell you not to beat yourself up, as I get really nervous and self conscious when I balls up even simple things, but well, don't beat yourself up! You handled it well, and those comms are noisy. The Scottish accent doesn't help either :D

Great vid Rory. Inspiration for something to do this weekend while the weather is looking good.
Jinx VFR thanks very much - delighted you enjoyed the video. It’s a superb trip so I hope you get the weather for it!
Simply brilliant, a must watch and leaves me wanting to get back in to flying, perhaps this time in a 3 axis instead of the PA 28 I was previously flying.
Thanks David - delighted you enjoyed it. I think if you’re happy with a 2 seater then 3 axis is the way to go - it’s so much cheaper.
:-) Fantastic Rory. Worth the wait I must say. You'll have no problem crossing over the Irish sea now :-)
Nice one JP - thanks. The exchange with the Edinburgh Tower controller is pretty cringe. Glad you enjoyed it!
I don't think it was cringe at all. The controller corrected your read back and that was that. Looked a brilliant trip. :-)
Brilliant, most informative as I only have 12 hours on a C42. Cheers
axiom666 ah good stuff, I’m glad you enjoyed it and found some of it useful. Thanks!
Good and instructive video, thank you. I think I would have been worried that the controller was expecting me to land at Edinburgh if he asked me to position on right base.
Thanks, very kind of you. Yes - I don't think I could have afforded the landing fees!
Great video, I’m taking my first flight in the Ikarus C 42 jan 21. And then learning to fly it and get all my licenses and be a pilot! Exciting times!
Excellent stuff - well I hope that goes well for you. I’m sure it’ll be good fun!
@@RoryOnAir Thanks so much! Never done anything like this before but always wanted to, I’m focused on this now,
@@michaelpearce8733 yeah you have to stay focused on the prize but it’s great fun.
@@RoryOnAir I’m so excited!
Cheers!
Another great video Rory! What a great adventure. If you're ever short on passengers give me a shout, I don't weigh much and bring my own snacks :)
Nick Sutton nice one Nick - I’m sure we’ll get a chance to fly together at some stage. Thanks for watching.
well done, great trip
Glad you enjoyed it Mike.
really good video . I live about 6 miles from Kirkbride although i also have a lot of connections with orkney . Know the lake district really well .
Nice one Dave.
Brilliant Rory, Well done... Very professional video :-)

Ronny Jonckers thanks Ronny - glad you liked it.
@@paulwyse878 sounds excellent. Always good to see airfields growing when there are so many under threat of closure.
I'm considering Mainair Flying School at the moment, and thanks for the advice! Yes I'll fire over a message!
Mike Lindsay thanks - glad you enjoyed it. I hope you make it up there sometime. 👍
Great videos, looking forward to the return journey. :)
John Knowles cheers John - thanks for taking the time to watch. 👍
Really enjoyed your vid. Nice flying.
Stuart Bird thanks very much - glad you enjoyed it.
Fantastic video. As a C42 pilot myself it's a pleasure to watch such a well put together, interesting, how it is, video. Keep up the awesome work and keep posting. If you ever consider flying in to Swansea, let me know.
Kristian Davies thanks very much Kristian - glad you enjoy the videos. I hope to get some more time flying in Wales so yes, I’ll let you know!
Very nice!! Want to fly to Edinburgh next autumn with a LSA.... from germany
Johannes Kirstein great! That’ll be an amazing trip. Call in at Barton on your way up the UK. 👍
Sounds Great!!!
I really enjoyed this video.. Well done great flying and video...sadly well hooked to Rory on air.
Al Watt im delighted you’re hooked! 👍
Great video! Great views of Edinburgh;)
Thomas Gillis thanks Thomas. It was pretty amazing from the Air.
Well luckily I'm free from the 8th till about the 20th!!
The MicroPilot right - well let’s see what we can do!
Rory On Air yes let's get in contact and sort a date.
Well done and another great video 👍
One quick question any reason why you went in the C42 and not the Eurostar as it’s a bit faster?
Awesome thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Rory just to let you I did it I flew in a Robinson 22 great first experience loved every minute of it
@@gustheswampdonkey excellent stuff! I’m glad you enjoyed it. 🚁👍
@@RoryOnAir
Thanks Rory. You are an absolute gent. Keep safe and I wish you and your family a fantastic Christmas.
@@chriskeenan1 same to you. It’s not going to be how is usually is but we’ll all make the best of it.
You are both such a lovely couple.
EinkOLED thanks - I’m a lucky guy having such an awesome wife.
great video well done.
Thanks very much Stephen. 👍
Another great video. Isn’t Barton airfield the one that operates the tow paragliding on a weekend morning? Anyway into the next video. Lucky I don’t have much to do at work :). All the best.
I think they do sometimes but I've never seen it myself. I enjoy watching youtube during work downtime too!
Great video Rory. I've just got my GST and some written exams to do then i can apply for my licence. Looking to join mainair once i'm qualified so might see you around!
Michael Brown excellent stuff Michael! Hopefully you’ll get all that done while the weather is good and I’ll definitely catch you at Barton. 👍
Poor fella, you were really getting flustered with your minor hiccup with EGPH Tower. You reported Kirknewton as Kirk Newington... :D :D
RoadRunnerLaser yes, I have found the RUclips videos to be a big help in learning and debriefing myself after a flight. Thanks for your comments.
Go for it!
As we say in America, you've "outkicked your coverage". Great vid, thanks.
edward nowak thank you!
@@RoryOnAir Very good. It's the text for your prompts that I was after. Maybe a pdf or word document to download from Google drive? Is it A5 size?
Richard Maher I don’t think I have a copy of it anymore but I would be happy to send you a picture of it on email or Facebook messenger for you to copy if that helps?
Yes please. I'll PM you shortly. Thanks for that. I'm 14 hours, loving it, ordering a C42 just now with TLAC. Solo very shortly (maybe tomorrow!).
Richard Maher brilliant! Lucky you getting your own plane. That’s very cool. I’ll keep an eye out for messages on the rory on Air Facebook page.
great vid, subbed!
Rory, what is the cruise IAS on your C42 please? Great videos, all of them.
Gordon Bruce thanks Gordon, glad you like the videos. DA cruises at around 80kts.
Thabani Sibanda oh that’s a good question - I’ll have a think! Glad you enjoy it.
Edinburgh radio sound quality was initially awful but controllers very professional.
Combination of high ground and low altitude.
What's the lovely music when you're on approach to Kirkbride at about 11:00 pleasae?
It’s actually just some youtube music, I’m not even sure what it’s called I’m afraid. I’m glad you like the video anyway. 👍
You flew over the “cauldstane slap” a bit in the pentland hills where the weather gathers. Awful place lol
Well that wasn’t very clever of me, was it. Thanks for watching.
What camera lens are you using on the DSLR?
Timothy Lee just the standard Kit lens that comes with the LUMIX g80.
How much was it to book the aircraft all day
I can't remember exactly and prices change but I think it about £350
Mate, people make mistakes. I can't tell you not to beat yourself up, as I get really nervous and self conscious when I balls up even simple things, but well, don't beat yourself up! You handled it well, and those comms are noisy. The Scottish accent doesn't help either :D
Well done, you won't be the first to screw up information from ATC and you won't be the last.
Thanks - you're right of course but it still hurts the pride when you make a mess of it.
And how about Covid-19?
C4GIF this video was filmed in July 2018.
Too much "Channel 4" influence for my liking
Le Coeur de BJJ I’m intrigued to know in what way this is ‘Channel 4’ and why that’s a bad thing?
It's a great video! Was kidding
