- In a Ringer all-star event, Amanda Dobbins and Sean Fennessey are joined by five of The Ringer’s biggest podcast personalities: Rob Mahoney, Joanna Robinson, Van Lathan Jr., Mallory Rubin, and Chris Ryan. Together, they’ve assembled to draft the best movies of 1999, a stellar year in cinema, with the release of such fan favorites as 'The Matrix,' 'Fight Club,' 'The Blair Witch Project,' and 'The Sixth Sense.'

I already listened to this, am i gonna watch the whole thing now? yes
Same.
Yep
100%
Y’all crazy
Yup
Ringer videos (specifically draft video) IS what we need again
CR has always been important to the black community, it is known.

Bobby “The Wizard” Wagner addressing the drafters from behind the curtain 😂
Van was losing his mind hearing Sean's love story lol.
"Did everyone take a throat-clearing tranq dart before this pod?"
I listened to this the day it went live, and paused the pod to stop and write down this quote. Sean FTW!
The backlash from the rest of the crew was so good too 😂
@@mdcodered05 Absolutely.
Hot take: Van won this draft, despite taking Phantom Menace early. His list encapsulates '99 with some classics, and a couple overlooked and under-appreciated films. Very rewatchable picks too.
Hot take: Van is the king of hot takes.
I'm so used to listening that this is extremely uncanny.
I always imagined them sitting around a table in a dimly lit room. 😅
I was listening then I heard Sean we are on video ,paused and jumped to YT
Yeah. I can’t finish it. Too weird.
@@iamsylar24 can someone explain why I too imagined this pod was recorded exactly as u described?
Having everyone in the same room for this was awesome. We need more of these group settings.
having an out of body experience matching faces to voices to the first time when it comes to this show, this is so magical, i am filled with childlike wonder and glee
Actually seeing The Ringer people who I have always only listened to and no one looks how I imagined is weird.
same experience hear lmao
Have you seen Chris Vernon? Seeing him for the first time and learning his voice added at three decades to him was alarming.
@@intheknowglow I don’t think I listen to any of his shows, so I can’t share that experience
We are so back
It is truly ridiculous how stacked 1999 was in terms of amazing movies.
Back when studios made films for the big screen.
I am really impressed by a podcast that can be this good with this many mics. Good shit!
The video podcast is absolute juice!
As a teenager in 1999, The Matrix was my Star Wars. Mind blown 🤯
Dammit I already listened to this episode and now I have to watch it? No problem. Shout out to Mallory, my fave
The mummy going in the first round brings a smile to my face
Thank you for posting a full episode recording! This is what I've been asking for in your video comments in the past, thank you.
Eyes Wide Shut is my favorite from 1999. A Kubrick special
Couldn't agree more with Van Lathan Jr. about Arlington Road. Haven't heard anyone describe my feelings about a film so accurately in a very long time. Great episode.
As someone who listens to the podcast on 1.2x speed, the "slowness" of the video really jarred me at the beginning lol
And Mallory and Amanda sitting in exactly the same position right next to each other is hilarious
i do the same - but you CAN speed the video up too. I watched this at 1.25 speed (1.2 is actually slightly better)
Y'all legit have the best job in the world. Thanks for sharing.
CR being cut out of the wide shot pains my core.
I watched The Matrix the same day of Larry Johnson's 4-point play against the Pacers, one of the most memorable days in my life.
1:09:17 dont know why but CR's "way to go, brad!", followed by Sean cracking up cracked me up as well
1999, especially the summer, was a great year for movies.
I am so happy I didn’t have time to listen to the pod.I always wanted to watch one of those drafts and I can’t believe they dropped the whole thing on video. This really made my day
Van constantly shouting out BR staples pre-2000 has me in a constant Leo pointing and whistling mode.
Love and respect to the rest of the Ringer staff including Bill but these 7 are my all-star podcasters...
We are SO back - although, technically, I was already here, cause I listened to the audio, but whatever. Now I'm BACK, we're BACK, we're here, we're drafting, it's 1999, I'm 7 years old, let's go baby. See you at the movies, everyone!
the only thing that could make this better is if everyone was smoking a cigarette (indoors)
Van is my guy! I love him!
"I don't fuck with shit like that" 🤣
Mystery Men going undrafted is okay because 1999 was so good, i really liked it though
Sean’s Austin Powers impression is really just Mike Myers “This is the time on Sprockets when we dance!!!” 🤣
Sean calling out us CR heads. I feel so seen.
The fact that Arlington Road was picked and Audition wasn't by a group of people who sat and shat on American Beauty is the most American Beauty thing ever.
Sean 10000% outing himself as a Reddit troll with the “4000 guys” comment 😂
What’s the timestamp on this? I came to the video just to experience it again

One of the greatest moments in draft history though.
CR heads stand up
you madams and sirs, make my job hours so much lighter
for that i will always be grateful
ps. whoever gets "the matrix" wins the draft
Thank you Mallory for defending Toy Story 2 low key the best one in the franchise
Wonderful podcast stream! 1999: The Matrix, Fight Club, The Sixth Sense, Toy Story 2, The Virgin Suicides, American Beauty, Sleepy Hollow, and many more. Great year. 1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Reds, Excaliber, Stripes, American Werewolf in London, Escape from New York, Das Boot, My Dinner with Andre, many more. Arguably equal or better than the '99 movies over all. Cheers!
Love everyone so much! Love Van the most! Brilliant squad
Toy Story 2 is the best one, and one of the best movies of this year! Mallory’s right and Sean-Chris-Amanda are crazy.
1:10:26 Rob does it again 1993 draft revisited DAGGER to Amanda.
1:17:30 Watching Amanda losing it at Sean when she’s pissed at Rob was funny as hell!
@@becks07sg While Van cackles in the background lol
Sean ended up with 4 of my top 7 ‘99 films. He’s really underrated as a podcast host.
Commanding hosting style. So good!
i am loving seeing the nonverbal communication and interaction between mal and amanda that we would have missed out on with audio only!
I’m honored to have studied abroad in the same place as CR
BEST DRAFT EVER! Always need more more people so that the movie choices go deeper and the strategy becomes more important. Plus the mix of personalities was spectacular.
LOVE THIS PODCAST!! i always wondered why they didn't do video as well. it's even better being able to finally put all the voices to faces.
Thank you so much for putting out the video for the draft. Love you guys!
I listened to this and now watching knowing Van did it in that hat makes it so much better. Also Mal killed this draft, great picks
petition for ‘The Mask of Zorro’ (1998) Rewatchables.
Absolutely not
@@matthogg2252 have you no whimsy?
@@jackpayne1861lol. Absolutely not.
@@matthogg2252 I’d imagine it’s super generational. I bet Bill Simmons would agree with you.
I’m in my 20s so I grew up with it.
But I’d argue it’s the 97-99 effect. Too many good movies. The bar was high and B movies were shrugged off. Go watch The Mask of Zorro in 2024 and tell me it’s not a fun time though.
@@jackpayne1861 I’m of that generation and I’m telling you it’s not generational.
There we go 🔥🔥🔥
Took me a minute to realize that Malory wasn’t wearing a shoulder less sweater and it was just her sitting perfectly behind a portrait of Andre the Giant
I have been trying my best to gather quotes from episodes from this year…will need to listen to this here again since it was difficult the first time
Why arent all ringer pods with full video? Not even on spotify where you still have a deal?
First Big Picture episode💯
I’m tapped in & it’s fitting because I was born in 1999🔥
The hardest I laughed in 1999, maybe the 90's as a whole was while watching Drop Dead Gorgeous in the movie theater. I was sitting next to my cousin and we were both loosing our minds at this movie... to the point that the rest of our group was concerned.
Perfect Blue and Princess Mononoke are hard to pin to 1999 since they came out originally in 1997. PM definitely was released in the US in 1999 but Googling I cannot find a US release date for PB.
this is top quality podcasting - thoroughly enjoyable!!
The Ringer has been fire on RUclips!
- What does Chris mean to the black community
- A lot (that delivery is perfect)

All my friends are here
I remember a classmate running up to me at 711 screaming about Blair Witch. I really thought they were having an episode or a bad mushroom experience. It was a heck of a promo.
I agree with Van! American Beauty is one of my favorite movies! I have the DVD with the commentary and bonus features. I need to watch it. You guys brought up a lot of movies from '99, that I forgot about. I remembered Three to Tango, when I got up this morning. It's good but not great.
I saw The Matrix IN CORK when I was there the summer of ‘99. If I was not already all in on CR, this would have cinched it.
Fennessey’s posture is poor no wonder he is always complaining about his back
He eats once a day! Respect the legend!
he complains about his back because he is always carrying amanda
I'm 30 and I recognize that is no longer young but I love Magnolia and hadn't discovered it until 3-4 years ago.
I know the Tower and Blockbuster she's referring to. Right next to Lenox Mall. It was open to Midnight.
I've always tried to remember where those where. Lenox MALL!!! 🤣
Great draft, a lot of great picks!
Mallory has my vote! I really hope she wins.
Also, Stuart Little absolutely snubbed!
Thank you thank you for posting the entire video! 1999 was an epic year for movies!
I’m not even joking… I don’t think I’ve ever seen a cowboy hat be pulled off better than this
Bummed they didnt mention japanese horror film "AUDITION"
Best horror film that year
Maybe the best horror movie in several years around that time. Most people haven't heard of it.
I don't think this group watches many foreign films.
@@Tydrix I don't think this group is probably representative of the group that should probably talk about this year. Probably need a couple of pep in the group that are a little older in the mix.
@@KK-pm7ud The group has a common taste in movies. Mostly comedy and a little bit of drama.
I need to know if this is Sean’s converted garage??
Mallory's rocking the Nikecraft General Purpose Shoes. Nice.
Sean being a Reddit troll was not on my 2024 bingo card😂
Chris is always talking about a funny tik tok he saw lol
I'm honestly so shocked that Amanda didn't draft The Virgin Suicides!
I’ve got 30 minutes left in this draft and The Green Mile still hasn’t been taken…maybe I understood the rules wrong…but WTF???
Its because the green mile is “quite poor”
Since this pod dropped... I have spent many nights... laying awake in bed... wondering why Dobbins never picked The Virgin Suicides.
It's fucking with my head in ways that I could not have imagined.
guys will see this and just think "hell yeah"
Draft starts at 28:00
This should be pinned. Half hour of nothing is crazy lol
I've been waiting for y'all to drop the video for this pod!
SEAN picks EYES WIDE SHUT ..
Easy win 👏
Eyes Wide Shut is a weird as all fuck movie (and im not even talking about the x-rated stuff). But it also could never be the best movie of that year because Kubrick sure he started it, but he didn't fully make it. If he did though sure, I could see it being one of the best movies maybe ever.
@@ruban8135Censorship by the studio proved the film’s point.
Listened to the pod. Now I’m watching my peoples. And Vans BS stories. 😂😂😂😂
99 and 01 are my favorite movie years. Magnolia, Office Space, Iron Giant, Blair Witch, Eyes Wide Shut, Audition, Election, Fight Club and Cruel Intentions would be my favorites but theres a ton more to pick from. Looking forward to watching this draft
Magnolia is so underrated
I'm glad this video is not in front of an audience because if so, they would all try to be comedians rather than reviewing these movies
Absolutely. Thats why live podcasts usually stink.
@@patrickthomas8890 I agree 💯
I saw that foot power struggle Amanda and Mallory. That's stuff you can't see unless there's video.
Van is the GOAT of laughing on mic - the discipline never breaks.
Dang this was really a historic movie year. A lot of classic rewatchables!
I love Mallory. She is the best.
We need to see Bobby on video too when he speaks! You can’t deprive us of that
Nice shirt, Rob. I, too, have entered the night gallery.
Id love to know how they felt about American beauty before the Spacey scandal
So beloved ....so respected...and now it's shit? An interesting shift. Spacey had a killer 10 year run, but now hindsight taints all his movies. Shame. His fault, I guess.
@@davidstone9624Sad how none of them have the guts to say they like it. Total revisionist history. 🙄
@@MrOctober44 Van said he likes it
The Action/Romance film titled "A..Broad" starring Lucas Hedges as Chris Ryan and Directed by Richard Linklater could only be a Ringer generated idea
freaky, this is now the 3rd different draft video ive watched and Amanda has landed the top pick slot on all of them
Mallory and Chris are the only ones I’d seen on After the Thrones before listening to the pods, it’s so weird to see the faces that go with the other voices! 😅
I was 7 in 1999, my 1/1 nostalgia pick would have been Toy Story 2 because it was the only one of these i saw in a theater.
Denise Richard’s is great in Drop Dead Gorgeous, but it is not her only good performance
Starship Troopers!
Wild Things!
Valentine!!!!!
Ok but where did Rob get his before sunrise shirt??
