Watch his video when he spends a month in the monastery. He explains he’s been going there since his fiancé died in a car accident years ago. He explains how it broke him and he suffered so much. He then decided he didn’t want to cause anyone to suffer and that’s what drove him to become vegan. He wanted to love/show compassion to all living things and to not harm them. It was not his brother. Funny thing, I went to culinary school and worked as a chef for years. Also owned a designer cake company years ago. My favorite class in school was meat theory. And here I am ethical vegan for 3.5 years 😊❤ I’m no longer in the food industry today. When I started culinary school I’d been a vegetarian for 14 years. They were not accepting back then of this and you had to eat what you made, which always heavy on animal products as I was trained mostly in classical French cuisine. If you refused you’d fail. So I sadly started eating meat. Funny I was always sick with one thing or another, hated the feeling of food in my stomach, developed gut health issues…until I became vegan and now feel happy, at peace with my food, and no more gut issues. Wish I’d seen the light sooner and gone vegan sooner. But here we are at 48 years old…better late than never ❤

you're so right about people always finding the flaws and assuming the worst. It's one of WORST traits in humans. It reminds me of 'religious-tok', christians and muslims judging their own for having a tattoo or showing a strand of hair or what not. Or when a fat person simply exists, or even makes any video like 'what i eat in a day as someone trying to lose weight'', there's tons of people making fun of what they're eating because it's not 100% 'clean' foods even though they're clearly in a calorie deficit. SO counterproductive. They really don't give ppl any compassion.
Hi Swayze, I just started watching your channel this summer. I love hearing your thoughts on veganism. Your sense of humor alone would be reason to watch, but I appreciate your thought-provoking messages. Interestingly enough, when I previously watched Derek's video, that sandwich he created made me think it would definitely meet with your approval. (cont'd) It looked absolutely scrumptious. P.S.: Your shot of "versus my food" still looked good to me. Broccoli and avocado... 🥦🥑YUM. Keep up the amazing work. I appreciate all that you do. ♥
Oh yeah, those digestive issues. One that I recently discovered is that I have a reaction to fermented foods. I've been eating kimchi and drinking kombucha for months and suddenly I developed hives after eating a few tablespoons of kimchi. So that was off the menu. Then this week after drinking a glass of kombucha ... BAM! ... the hives are back. Apparently I'm one of those unlucky people that have a histamine intolerance. I love Derek's videos. The video where he cooked at a Buddhist Mediation center for a month was mind-blowing! If you haven't seen it, it is worth a look. I think he posted it about 2 months ago. PS. I think Derek is no longer involved with Wicked.
The things that really bugs me are some of my non vegan friends will make comments about items that I should avoid because they aren',t vegan like vitamin capsules, etc. Like I don't know how to read a label. I recently made millionaires shortbread and had to make the caramel and condensed milk by hand! But still I'll just throw random veggies, and beans into an instant pot and have that for dinner. I am trying to convince my husband to eat less meat with me and possibly try vegetarianism. I would love an updated video of the 5 reasons to go vegan as motivation for him. I've seen your older version of that topic!!
It has been three months since my last confession. I just bought a car and the trim line I got doesn't have an option for non-leather seats and I feel bad about it. I don't know what to do about that.
The digestive issues…I had more of them from eating animal products (which was the catalyst for me to go plant based) than I do from eating beans, lentils, and vegetables. As far as I identity, I call myself plant based. My husband is an omnivore, so this means I still purchase and prepare animal products even though I don’t consume them. I will say his consumption of animal is greatly reduced but I doubt it will ever be zero. I’ll take that as a win.

Can't you just buy whole spices and grind your own? Vastly cheaper, better flavour, you can vary the flavours as you want, no hidden ingredients. If manufacturers are putting extenders like wheat in their spices it is because they don't care about their product.
Can you do a video looking into the claims about “30 plants a week improving your gut microbiome”? My assumption is that it’s preliminary data still, but I’d love to get your breakdown on what the research actually says. Tiktok creator PlantYou is always quoting that study but I don’t know what it actually means. Her recipes are delicious, but this focus on adding as many plants as possible is really not practical for a lot of us!

i bought the boars hair brush when i was in jail because i had no idea what i needed apparently the brush i got was for afros and i am a 100 pound white guy so I just gave it to someone that was black in the jail
The grey area in art supplies is difficult to leave 💀💀💀 I can’t afford vegan art supplies or the companies available in my area don’t disclose if they use animal based glue for sth like watercolor papers (which I just learned they can be non vegan)
People definitely over do the "ideal" with things like the paint brush bristles in your child's school supplies having boar's hair bristles - people really need to use their noodles on this. There are not farms of boars and pigs being raised for brush bristles. Nor are cattle being bred, raised, slaughtered for bone char used in sugar production as well as many other products, including most every product with leather in them. Now, obviously there are the high end goods but I am talking about for the things that the vast majority of people can afford. We will always have some small niche farm that might grow boar for a few products BUT that would clearly not be the norm. Now, back to the things like bone char for sugar productions, boar bristle brushes, etc - they are simply using by-products of the raising animals for meat industry. If there wasn't the meat industry the amount of money that would have to be charged for the dozens of other products that come from the leftovers would end being priced out of the market as there would be cheaper alternatives. does anyone really think that the sugar industry specifically seeks out bone char versus other ways to get and use carbon (or alternatives to making the sugar a pretty white). With as many animals that people eat there is simply lots of bone char and since the animal agriculture sector is so huge as well as subsidised in many countries, there are lots of low cost leftovers that can be used in any number of ways. Obviously it would be ideal to have as little of that stuff as possible, but this is also why the biggest impact you can make with animal welfare is to convince people for their health, quality of life, life span and health span. Cutting back on meat, dairy, egg intake or cutting it completely out lowers the supply of all those other inputs that go into other products that there are substitutes for. The less meat, dairy and eggs that people eat, the higher the prices on the remaining items due to supply and demand. That will then push manufacturers of other products that use animal inputs to move to alternatives that will then be cheaper as the previous input goes up and up and up in price. biggest difference to make the change is get people to stop eating animal products and everything else will adjust just due to the economics of making all these other products. Leather couch - not coming from cattle just raised for leather while all the other parts of the cow goes to waste. There are around 3.5 to 4 billion cows, sheep, pigs slaughtered for food each year which means lots of hides to sell to the leather industry. Drop that supply and fewer leather couches get made, fewer cars with leather seats, etc. But having a car with leather seats in it is because someone eats meat and your car seats are just left overs. And no, I am not talking about some $750,000 high end luxury car that 99% of the people cannot afford.
Could you do a video on vegan vs vegetarian as far as animal suffering and environmental impact? I just don't stick to a vegan diet and am wondering if vegetarian has a positive impact. It doesn't seem like it does.
vegetarianism absolutely has a positive impact on climate! Nature has a study from 2023 showing how vegan, vegetarian, and pescetarian diets reduce co2 emissions and water use. Even just eating less meat causes a big shift. don't let perfect be the enemy of good, even small changes can have a big impact!
I just had a pretty emotionally heavy discussion with my non-vegan partner and how I don't understand how he doesn't care about the animals that he eats I'm emotionally exhausted after that conversation with him cos I cried a lot, and it was really difficult to explain to him fully he's very understanding and listens to me and my points, but he says to me he doesn't care as much as I do I'm so torn because I love him and we've been together for 7 years but him not having any interest or want in going vegan for any other reason than it'll make me happy, is crushing me
Oh wow, I literally had the same experience today but with my brother. Ended up crying a lot. It's the same reasoning. A retort to that could be - you dont have to have personal attachments to not cause harm to someone. It's the bare minimum. It's not compassion or care. Anyway for me personally, I decided to not engage with any of my family other than my parents at this point. They aree all lovely people but they react like Twitter trolls when veganism is brought up. So now I guess I'll be less offended by the troll comments I get seeing my family act similarly. I don't have the mental capacity anymore. I really tried because I do love these people. So now I'll love them from a distance I guess. I deserve a good life, and so do you. Hope you're able to recover and communicate your points well. Watching earthlings Ed debates massively helped me. Good luck to you, friend. Hope everything goes well for you ❤.
@@GST6647 thank you for your kind words 💚💚 I appreciate it I relate so hard to what you said about not having the mental capacity anymore it's so difficult for me to accept my partner is a good person but he's also not for not having compassion for animals
When I met my wife 5 years ago I told her that animal rights and veganism is a big part of my identity. A day after our second date, she called me crying. She watched Earthlings and couldn't believe how cruel the industry is. If I'm being honest, I couldn't date a person who isn't on the page with me on that topic. I understand your frustration, I often feel the same with friends. Like I cry bc I'm so frustrated and they feel like it's just an opinion difference but for me it's so much more. Did you already showed him the videos? Do you feel like he truely understands but just doesn't care?
i think you need to sit down with yourself and see if you could continue to handle the pain of knowing your partner isn't vegan. Yes you love him but if loving him hurts you, please rethink. have you told him it bothers you to the point where you don't know if you continue to be with him? i cant imagine going through this so I'm really sorry
Check out some of the early videos from the channel "So You're Dating A Vegan" on why Liz isn't vegan. They are both good at articulating where their respective positions.
You keep saying that, but I dont buy the not loving animals thing. I saw how you cried when talking about your last cat. Nah-uh Swayze! Your heart still beats for the furry little shits. But your point is well taken.
I tried the plant based diet for 2 years after stopping smoking because I expected better health but my health deteriorated very fast, I needed to switch to a meat only diet to correct all of the following health problems: obesity, prediabetes, loose teeth, bleeding gums, sensitive teeth cold sores, blocked sinuses, mouth breathing, left eye twitches (tetany) heartburn, calf cramps, yellow stool, blood in stool edema below the knees, painful feet when walking, sunburn is less shoulder, back and neck pain after waking, lower back pain and stiffness 5+ Years on the carnivore lifestyle now :) Eat Meat, Not Too Little, Mostly Fat

Omg.. when you said your first born is 7 years old 🤯 I remember when you were pregnant
The grey area in art supplies is difficult to leave 💀💀💀 I can’t afford vegan art supplies or the companies available in my area don’t disclose if they use animal based glue for sth like watercolor papers (which I just learned they can be non vegan)
Here within 20 mins! So I guess I have to comment.
People definitely over do the "ideal"
with things like the paint brush bristles in your child's school supplies having boar's hair bristles - people really need to use their noodles on this.
Love Derek. Hate Paul.
Vegans who hate vegetarians are a huge example of the problem you're discussing here.
I think that too, but they're honestly the ones who got me to switch from vegetarian to vegan... soooo pretty effective, at least for me 🤷♀️
@@uhhhhh4748 same haha
Born in 84?!?! This is the year we turn 40 lol!
I hate how everyone keeps saying oh but you can't eat meat, yes I can I don't want to...
Trust me. Anything made by crayola is going to be synthetic. A boars hair brush, while not expensive, is a tier above what crayola offers.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Idk if I agree that vegan is always plant based, just due to the amount of processed vegan food we can eat.
I just had a pretty emotionally heavy discussion with my non-vegan partner and how I don't understand how he doesn't care about the animals that he eats
I'm emotionally exhausted after that conversation with him cos I cried a lot, and it was really difficult to explain to him fully
he's very understanding and listens to me and my points, but he says to me he doesn't care as much as I do
I'm so torn because I love him and we've been together for 7 years but him not having any interest or want in going vegan for any other reason than it'll make me happy, is crushing me
Oh wow, I literally had the same experience today but with my brother.
@@GST6647 thank you for your kind words 💚💚 I appreciate it
I relate so hard to what you said about not having the mental capacity anymore
it's so difficult for me to accept my partner is a good person but he's also not for not having compassion for animals
That food company food isn’t good I’m vegan but I don’t like that brand
I love their stuff
Your broccoli avocado bowl looked delish! Don’t worry. 😊
You keep saying that, but I dont buy the not loving animals thing. I saw how you cried when talking about your last cat. Nah-uh Swayze! Your heart still beats for the furry little shits. But your point is well taken.

I tried the plant based diet for 2 years after stopping smoking because I expected better health but my health deteriorated very fast, I needed to switch to a meat only diet to correct all of the following health problems:
obesity, prediabetes, loose teeth, bleeding gums, sensitive teeth
cold sores, blocked sinuses, mouth breathing, left eye twitches (tetany)
heartburn, calf cramps, yellow stool, blood in stool
edema below the knees, painful feet when walking, sunburn is less
shoulder, back and neck pain after waking, lower back pain and stiffness
