In this video Heimler talks all about religion in the land-based empires from 1450-1750. Religion was a significant means by which rulers of land-based empires consolidated and legitimized their power.
Sometimes religion was a great unifier as in the case of Akbar of the Mughal Empire. Other times it was a fractious reality as in the case of Christianity and Islam.
In the Christian church it was Martin Luther who began to complain about the abuses of the Roman Catholic Church, specifically the practices of simony and the sale of indulgences. His complaints led to the Protestant Reformation and a permanent split of the Christian Church.
The Muslims also had some turmoil during this period. The Safavids and the Ottomans were both Muslims but not the same kind. The Ottomans were Sunni and the Safavids were Shi’a and this led to much discord among the neighboring empires.
This video corresponds to Unit 3 Topic 3 of the AP World History curriculum. Leave any questions below.
Heimler History and John Green are the only good things about being in AP World.
My teacher just puts these two channels in class then he sits in the back of the classroom and drinks coffee :)
super duper accurate
@@kingofbruhssia4639 I want ur teacher
I agree, I think this class is the most boring thing ever. And I’ve always liked history.
@@kingofbruhssia4639 You can't even call that bad teaching, these 2 guys are great.
Honestly these are so helpful you teach me more than my ap teacher teaches me with an hour and a half.
Well I’m glad you’re finding them useful...
Insanely helpful content, thank you
Well yeah, this is scripted and without students running around and asking questions

notes:
religion- key to expansion
christian schism:
roman catholic church was dominant. when kings consolidated power, church lost power and people began to have doubts in the church.
the church also grew corrupt during this period. selling of indulgences and simony.
martin luther - german monk who wrote the document called the 95 theses and wrote them to the church. wrote his newfound understanding and complains about the abuses of the church. church became mad and his ideas are widespread (protestant reformation)
counter reformation - the church corrected the many abuses in reponse to the protestant reformation
islam conflict:
ottoman and safavid - sunni vs shia muslims
safavid - denied the legimitacy of sunni muslim
constant dispute over land
akbar is someone who tolerated all religons. he attempted to create sikhism - blended hinduism and buddhism.
quick thing, akbar did not create sikhism he just allowed it to exist. Also it was a blend of hindu and islam, not hindu and buddhism.
Damn the Ottoman ruler really went off on the Safavids
Mmhmm...
Fr bro why he gotta do them like that 😔
I have ADHD and it’s so hard to focus on all the reading I have to do for homework and it’s sometimes confusing so these videos are very helpful to understand what I’m reading about and make it more digestible
My teacher has no idea what’s happening because it’s her first ap year and all she does it give us the book to read and then makes us take notes it’s so unhelpful.
These videos are so helpful and helping break down the reading and help me fully understand it! Thank you!
Glad to hear it. Yeah, first year is rough. I’m sure my students were saying the same thing my first year...
Steve Heimler update: i recommended your videos to the class and now everyone watches your videos and we took the unit 3 test this week and this is the best all of us have done on a test! My class loves your videos!
literally
My teacher is genuinely useless
It’s his first year teaching ap and he really wants to retire already
He’s making us read the book witch is fine but not engaging and it’s everyday with him. I’m learning more from you than the book
Glad I can help! I remember my first year teaching... it was ROUGH
same for me, i got a 50 o my unit 1 test and i’m struggling so hard
do You go to Eastlake Highschool
Same, except the school has kept him for a LONG time... it's just sad... we feel bad for him at this point.
Being a teacher, especially in America, is extremely difficult and stressful, so I feel bad for him.
Mr. Heimler I am a AP World Student in Freshman year and I have my AP tomorrow and I have watched all your videos three times! Thank you sooo much!!! I love you and your brain for all the knowledge that I have received.
You can take AP world in freshman year?

Thank you for these videos! They really do help. I really appreciate your work!
Well, you’re most welcome. Thanks for watching!
I'm taking notes and he says the Shi'a and Sunni eventually get along. I write this down. the next second, "they have in fact never learned to hug each other and they still consider each other blasphemers."
So mean...
I really appreciate your help. I am getting ready for a unit test and your videos are getting my head refreshed and ready for the test! Your videos are the best!
I wish there was a youtube channel that would teach Ap World through stories I would learn so much better.
Ha, me too. Someone should make that channel...
I think I will do that when I start animations 😊
These videos are absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for your help! Keep up the good work :) I learn so much from the videos. They honestly make AP world much more interesting.
That’s awesome... I love hearing that they’re helpful
Martin luther really said: Okay thats enough, im finna intervene😈
My teacher has decided to use your videos for our assignments. We have to watch it and write notes about it. You videos are so content dense that this five-minute video took me 30 minutes to write notes on
Mushroom Marble3219 did u Write everything word for word
@@mohammedalsammak7176 no I summarized, it maybe been just me trying to make pretty note tbh
I watch these the night before a test and your honestly my savior 🌝
I've been using your videos to study, and since you decide to include every topic main points and an illustrative example in less than 10 minutes (thankfully), you have caused my right side of the middle finger to be in pain due to how much I have to pause and write ;(, but thank you
Heimler, your videos are so informative that I get more out of them than I ever have from my teacher. She gives us ridiculously long homeworks and doesn't teach us anything in class. But hopefully I'll still pass thanks to your content!
I swear I’m for unit 3 I learned like a fracture like not even liek so little of all of this. This video is actually helping me so much. Now I actually know what I’m doing now.
Well that makes me really happy to hear. Glad it helped...
your videos are helping me so much these videos are so good for reviewing thank you mr heimler

You’re welcome!
i have a really lovely teacher but she just doesn’t always have time to go over these in class and this is really so much more helpful than reading form the book

i really like your videos I hope I get at least a 4 on my ap exam
thank you for this video, i was struggling about this because my teacher just given me a book and read. i was really don't understand any of word even i read it more then 5 times. i've got 60 on the test, hopelly i will earn an A next time.
Very Cool!
Well, thanks!
you are a lifesaver
Glad to hear it...
Hi there. I wanted to suggest could you put more text on your videos when you explain the objective of the video and for other parts that you see fit, since a lot of students have to take notes and when you speak to quickly it's hard to keep up, so reading it off would allow it to sit in our heads for longer.
Nico123o you could turn on captions
turning captions on is super helpful
I really wish Heimler’s history was my teacher.
Akbar is a legend tbh
You're not wrong...
What's that dope painting at 5:34
GOD BLESS YOUUU
Yes! 😇✝️
my teacher forces us to read the book but half the time i have no idea what its saying. your videos are a life saver.
I’m really glad to hear they’re bringing some clarity...
1:36 - 1:51 Sounds like an early form of the prosperity gospel! 😧
Martin Luther did not post it on a church door. He went to the middle of the town square and declared his theory. It was a common practice to have public debates in the town square. As it was the day before All Saints Day, many people were there, thus attracting more attention.
I'm confused as to how the Muslims fit in with Akbar? I get that he is tolerant to all religions, but I don't understand what he did for the Muslims?
You saved me
Hi Heilmer, I love your content. So much clarity so quickly.
However, Sikhism = Islam + Hinduism? I am very surprised - can you please elucidate?
@@user-zp5ds2mg8s Where does Islam come in?
- when kings started going for power, people began to question the religious power, so the Catholic Church lost power in Europe
Martin Luther: protested the Catholic Church, leading people to have the Protestant reformation
Ottomans: sunni,
safavids, Shi’a
Indulgences reduce punishment, they don't forgive sins
Is there a video for Unit 3 Topic 4?
That’s a summary topic, so everything is covered in the unit 3 review video
Thank You!
watching this on x1.75 speed before my unit 3 test 😌
i got my unit 3 test on friday
i need help. why do you think there are so many religious wars throughout history and today when the basis for all religions is love and kindness
Bc there were wars and conflict between different religions

Then you’re doing it right...
1. An indulgence is rather the remission of temporal punishment due to sin, and presumes that a sin has already been absolved. It has its principle in the suberabundant merits of Christ and the saints, and the authority given to the Chuch to apply them.
2. They were certainly not "instituted" during the above time period to make money - although local abuses were indeed widespread during this time due to greed. Indulgences have their origin in the earliest centuries of Christianity when strict public penances were assigned for fixed amounts of time. If the penitent was observed to be truly converted, this punishment was remitted or shortened.
So, to say today, that I gain a 40 day indulgence, is to say that my temporal punishment (which I would otherwise suffer in purgatory) has been remitted to the equivalent of doing strict penace [on earth] for 40 days.
Certain prayers, good works, etc. (yes, including building churches) can qualify for an indulgence. And in the latter we find what the local abuses took unlawful advantage of.
