Joo Se Hyuk kept a high ranking for longer than any other defensive player. His high rank was number 6 in the world and he was inside the top 10 for several years. Chen Weixing reached number 9 but did not stay that high for very long, but was still quite good in his mid 40s. Gionis Panagiotis got inside the top 20 very briefly. Koji Matsushita might have been ranked inside the top 20 for awhile but I don't know, since he goes back pretty far. Ma Te is excellent but for some reason he's not ranked very high. If you go way back, Norio Takashima was a top 10 ranked player.
I personally really like Jo Se Hyuk but I would make a case for Hou Yingchao. Having a highest ranking of 10 and has won the all China table tennis championships. He is the oldest person to win the title and winning Chinese championship could be harder than winning many of the international tournaments.
My most favourite pro defenders are JSH and Koji Matsushita. I really like Satoshi Aida, Gustaf Ericson and Lee Seung Jun's unique defensive style as well. They aren't as good as top defenders but they're very exciting to watch.
Gionis and Ruwen Filius don't play fh chop at all....so no real defenders like the others but very smooth bh gionis.....yoo se hyuk and Ma Te are the best overall ( most consistent )...hou yinghao is most entertaining ( has exceptional quality in bh with short pips and crazy sidespin....)and I like matsushita most because of his fenomenal light footwork and technical ability....also Wang Xi and Shiono have very good footwork....Long live defensive style but gets harder at the top due to plastic ball and development of offensive players.....
I think the new ball changed defense, before you could put way more spin on the ball while chopping, but now even the strongest chops can be looped back because the plastic ball doesnt have as much spin. So now you have to put more pace on the ball and care more about placement, defending in the modern age is way harder in my opinion.
Hyundai is my favourite. I have not done the analysis in terms of titles and opponents beaten etc but in my mind off the top of my head he stands out as clearly the best!!!
While JSH was the highest ranked and long time high ranked defensive player, I agree that Chou Yinghao is the best defender over the last 15 years. He won Chinese Nationals two times, iirc. He wasn’t highly ranked due to internal team politics, so he never got to play internationally over a longer period of time. Ma Te might be the strongest defender with the highest potential, but due to so many strong attackers in the Chinese National Team, he never really got the opportunity to play important international tournaments. It will be interesting to see, if China pushes the young defender Sun Yang over the next couple of years. He won a WTT Youth Contender U15 this year and played well in others. It would be great to see a top defender again on the international stage in the future.
Masato Shiono, Koji Matsushita and Wu Yang for the female side are very fun to watch. Despite aggressive players being top most of the times. I'm really glad people play choppers as it makes the game more interesting to watch.
All of them are great and have their own strengths and weaknesses but Joo Saehyuk was the most higher rank till top 5 and maintained his ranking to top 20 below before he retired. So Joo Saehyuk is the best modern defender of all time.
QQQ for the coach - how come I did not see any choppers style players making it to later stages in Olympics ( I remember few Koreans do so in previous Olympics) - does this mean its the end of that style?
Plastic ball changed defending makes returning ball easier which puts even more pressure for the defender to not get tired from very long rallies without much hope that attacker will make a mistake
No one can surpass Joo See Hyuk :))
Agree

Joo Se Hyuk of Korea is invincible All Time No.1 defender.. hes the only defender legend
Thank you very much for the video, I am becoming a defensive player and I really enjoyed seeing this compilation of defensive plays.
My most favourite pro defenders are JSH and Koji Matsushita. I really like Satoshi Aida, Gustaf Ericson and Lee Seung Jun's unique defensive style as well. They aren't as good as top defenders but they're very exciting to watch.
Joo See Hyuk - Koji Matsushita - Gionis Panagiotis - then the others lol
Remove Gionis and add Ma Te

@@klaasparlevliet2952 the title is defender, not chopper..so no chop forehand doesnt matter.
@@jonathanhansson804 A in form gionis will eat up ma te in a match. His forehands are very strong.

Thanks for the video, Coach!
I think JSH is one of the best defenders of all time
I think so too!
What's the name of the defensive player in 40:57?
Chen Xinhua, the one defender who consistently made the Chinese team in major competition in small ball era, when spin and speed were even greater.
Hyundai is my favourite. I have not done the analysis in terms of titles and opponents beaten etc but in my mind off the top of my head he stands out as clearly the best!!!
You forgot about Evgueni Chtchetinine. Classic defender from Belarus
Полностью согласен! Таких как евгений сейчас нет!
Chtchetinine and Matsushita are the best Defenders. 💪🏻
Joo Se Hyuk by far lol
Joo se Hyuk > Ruwen Filus > (the rest)
Joo Se Hyuk. End of conversation.
Next video= JOO Se Hyuk: The GOAT
Joo Sae Hyuk for sure
JSH is the best defender who has ever lived IMO, but I see Hou Yingchao style is very effective against top Chinese attackers.
JSH, no question, wrong question.
Why the hell are the names of the players not given at the beginning of each segment? Not everybody watching is an ardent follower of the sport.
Joo se hyuk
Best of all time? Probably Joo Se Hyuk. Current best? I would say Ma Te.
Thanks for sharing !! Great player selection !
Glad you enjoyed it
The one that had defeated the "Maestro" and the "Defense Killer"
JOO Sae Hyuk, highest ranking : 5.
Hou Yingchao for sure: 2 x China national champion, 20 years apart.
Jsh top rank 5

Jan-Ove Waldner

Chen Weixing of course. Love his bad-boy attitude. He is the John McEnroe of table-tennis world.
What about Li Gun Sang and Chen Xinghua?
of course Joo se hyuk!!!
min 6:29 is wang yang vs who?
It has to be either joo sae hyuk or Koji Matsushita

Hou Yingchao right now. However he is special and it's hard to learn to play his style.
Who was the guy playing wang yang in the first clip?
How about Wang Hao, at the beginning fo the 1990's? (the long, slender defense player, not the more famous Wang Hao penholder player)
how was the shanghai defender called? playing for cao yanhua team
1. Koji Matsushita
2. JSH
3. Ruwen Filus
4. Hou Jingchao
5. Panagiotis Gionis
6. Dietmar Palmi
I would say
Panagiotis Gionis:🗿🗿🗿
