It's crazy how much spin JSH generates and how much speed he takes off those Ma Long smashes. Ma Long rips a shot as hard as humanly possible, and it comes back looking like it's in slow motion. Nutty.
I played ping pong to a decent level, and it's not that hard to chip back the opponent attack. You just stood far from the table, the his shot would slow down by the time it gets to you. But the challenge is getting it back into the table time after time, because when you're that far, the table appears a lot smaller to you.
I don't want to be that guy but if you understand physics, have an extensive background in ping pong, or a relatively decent level of critical thinking you'll see how it's actually not as difficult and impressive as you may think. Joo was like a snake at times, so flexible in the way his body could contort and absorb some of the pace. Also so versatile in placement and spins, very few balls were returned the same way. Add to that his ability to suddenly turn defense into offense if the opportunity presented itself, very capable topspin drives and mid distance topspin rallies.

The " defender " has incredible REACTION !!! I played this fun game , it's not easy to defend powerful( crazy )shots made by MA LONG... It's an amazing show of talented players
I calculated a rough estimate. 6 to 7 frames at 25fps over a length of 2.74m is equal to about 120-130km/h! That is insane. The word record is about 120km/h so I think either the video or the framerate is inconsistent but holy moly that is one heck of a smash!
This is why I love being a defender in TT way back in college. Most people don't know defenders / back spinners pack a punch when it comes to spiking the ball back towards the attacker! Great performance by both player. 😊
нет слов. просто восхительно. уважение корейцу, он долго держался и не сдавался. особенно заметили как он в критические моменты брал и атаковал. обо гении просто. но китаец зверь!
Its seems the attacker has thr advantage. The shots were easily planned and completely open to what and where he wanted the ball to go. A balanced playstyle is probably best, but heavy offense will beat heavy defense.
That's probably the reason why nowadays we have a new type of defensive player, the modern defender, who plays with a defensive and an offensive rubber and alternates between attacking and defending. This modern defender can keep up with the heavy attacker since he has the advantage of varying spin.
i often practice defense, it's very demanding in terms of cardio (have to run more because further away from the table), legs and ....really hard on the back. But it really makes fun practice against an attacker and takes forever to get it right with inverted rubbers
Ma long is very good but i m really impressed wt Joo. His defence technique is simply mind blowing, although he prefers to play defensive his attack is equally at the best👍
I find it really cool that Ma Long's offense turned out to be a great weakness. Because he wasn't able to predict the shift when JSH does to his own offense, he stayed close to the table constantly to prepare for the next defensive return, but sometimes the ball would come back offensively, and he wasn't prepared for it at all.
Most people underestimate the power of defensive players, as a defender player my self way back college i sometimes play 4-5 rallies as a defender and when an opportunity is found to attack the opponent they'd be caught off guard since they are used to the spin that the defensive player used before. Great play by both.
See how most of the score from JSH is him being offensive and getting Ma Long off guard thus resulting him to miss a calculation on how to counter attack after a spike
Defense is a observe play style. What I mean is the attacker in the first set he was winning so the defender had to learn his tricks. But that does not mean attacking is at a disadvantage as they can change their attacks or tactics.
Awesome. Joo is very skilled. Chopping a heavy topspin with a non inverted rubber is not easy. That is why most defenders (like gionis or ruwen) just lob a heavy topspin ball most of the time on their non inverted rubber.
It would be a pleasure for table tennis if there were more players like Joo Sae-hyuk. This match is more beautiful to see than a match of Ma Long versus Fan Zendong, Xu Xin, Harimoto, Niwa, Ovtcharov, Boll, Lin-Yun-Ju, Calderano and all the others.
This match reminds me of a very famous story. In ancient China, there was a man who sold both spears and shields. He boosted his spears were so good that they could break any shields. However, at the same time, he also bragged his shields were so strong that no spears could break them. One day, a by-stander challenged him to use his spears to attack his shields. At the end, that man was speechless. Ma is the attacker that can destroy any defender and Joo is the defender that no attacker can defeat. Everyone here is the by-stander who wants to know what will happen.
defensive players just rely on unforce errors by the opponent, that is why seldom win with the offensive players. this is the hardest style in pingpong to be defensive player.
@@ktosomcosom19 They mean unforced in the sense that, because defensive players put super heavy backspin on the ball with chops, attacking players will find it difficult to move their bat fast enough to create enough topspin so the ball doesn’t bounce down into the net or table. Love this post! One of my favorite matches. Joo Sae Hyuk makes it look easy. It’s hard to chop low to the net and deep vs heavy top spin. Anyone think Joo change out his pips for a faster rubber would have improved his style?
In my humble opinion, it wouldn´t work for him if he ever changed his style to attacking, even very early in his career. In many matches, including this, I´ve seen him having clear opportunities to attack and probably finish the point on the backhand side, but he would push/chop instead and it seems like he just prefers to keep the ball in play instead to try and frustrate/confuse his opponent and only go for attacks from the forehand side - even though he was very adept of attacking both with pips and his forehand rubber on the backhand side. Perhaps he just didnt feel that his backhand attacks are sufficiently reliable, I don´t know.

awesome match, but when you best defender that keeps floating balls back so slowly, i wonder how many smashes you can stop.
На 7:15 - лучший розыгрыш! Борьба в концовке на больше-меньше - просто блеск!!! Оба - МОЛОДЦЫ! 🏓🏓///
If I hadnt learned about Xu Xin and Wang Haos Penhold attacking style, I would definitely play as a defender attacmpting to emulate Joo SaeHyuk. Also the change of the bll makes it much harder for defenders, so it isnt really viabe anymore. Anyways, I am glad I play as an attacking looper now, but I still enjoy the defensive game with TPB lobbing every once in a while to emulate my former dream of being a defender!
incredible both players; congrats to the winner
i get the idea of playing to your strengths but when youre playing PURELY defensively, you have to be putting yourself at a disadvantage against someone whos so aggressive! its kind of like refusing to punch back in a fight and instead you just bob and weave, like yeah sooner or later the dudes gonna get tired but youre gonna get beat the hell up if you dont try and put the guy on his heels
i havent seen a lot of table tennis matches but this has to be the best out there, i don't think anything tops this one
What a play...they are deserves be the best!!
