I think Dan has really made Werner's day. A lot of emotions and memories for him. It always feels great to make someone happy. Respect for Dan and TTD❤❤
Players like Ma Long or Fan Zhendong are the toughest and most athletic guys you’ll see with perfect attacking form. But if there’s a true genius or wizard in TT, it’s this man right here. Werner is so humble too!
Fantastic ! I never knew the legend was so wonderfully friendly, witty, high spirited and humble from his stern looks in the matches. What a surprise! Wonderful video (possibly the best professional - guest video on this channel so far).
Schlager has ridiculous spin on his serve which the top Chinese struggled to cope - it's so evident int he WTTC in 2003. One can see the ball kick in this clip - crazy amount of spin - very fine ball sensing and feeling by Schlager. Practice is important, but first you need to see it in your mind the ball settling into the top sheet in the 'bite' stage to get crazy spin on serve. Thanks, Dan, for Schlager's masterclass.
Werner is one of the most excellent and observant coaches I’ve ever met and he’s just such a pleasant person to be around. Very patient, very good at connecting with people and of course watching him play in any capacity just makes you smile from ear to ear. Great video Dan!
Thanks for this vidéos, Werner was my favorite player in the 90’s and at this time he was a model to learn my services, glad to see this legend again !!!
Absolute legend! Will remain in history as the last non-chinese world champion for many years to come! Loved his style, his elegance, and especially his serves! Really happy to have seen the service explanation bit in this video!
Not only is he talented but he seems like a genuinely awesome guy! I love seeing athletes that enjoy their sport and can be a good ambassador and carry so much happy positive vibe. After watching this video ive come to like schlager even more!!❤
@@TableTennisDaily hi Dan, if you ever come to Hungary I would gladly make a Klampár collab happen. He is 70 years old, but his game is still great. He was the idol of JoW

I arrived in Vienna at the same time his Academy closed. I have never been so unhappy ! I played there a couple of times before and the atmosphere was amazing always surrounded with top players from around the globe. He his terribly missed and I would wish he would re-instate his presence. So many more talented players would emerge from is gravitational pull. Yes he is a super talented/gifted and smart player, he will never lose that feeling. Great to watch. The serve tip is SPOT ON and yes very hard to master ! Great video Dan
You can see how much Werner *loves* playing table tennis, doing all the banter and playing it cool, smiling like a child. We will never have these kind of footages from say the Ma Longs or the Fan Zhendongs out there. Loved watching Schlager and Chen Weixing play, they were the last players to show emotions and play for fun and the sake of it
Yeah it really was an amazing experience. Truly honoured and was great to share it in this way. Hope people can learn a thing or 2 from the vid. Super cool guy 😎
@@Ufkatuale Yh I remember the feeling. Now table tennis is more tactical. Before it used to be spin and speed with the speed glue hence why if was more fun and the rallies were epic. Look at FZD vs WCQ now - all about tactics and no fun.

Great player! I started playing table tennis after seeing him play)) I watched training videos with his serves, I learned a lot. Glad to see him in good health) Thank you Dan👏👍
Great video, just a joy to watch. Werner’s sense of the ball is so acute and he adjusts his stroke so well with minimal movement. Dans game, especially stability has improved since the last showdown :) Even the one where Werner is just standing and blocking, it’s easy to miss the skill of Dan in being able to put all the balls in and around the same spot!
That bit about applying forward force was actually a great lesson. I’ve taken a lot of coaching and something that is never touched on is the specifics of when to apply the legs in your shots.
He genuinely seems like a great guy 😅 That shot of you bombing at him and it zooms in on his feet made me laugh 😂😂 You’re giving it all you’ve got and he’s just stood there like he’s waiting for a bus 😂😂😂😂
The hand eye coordination is sick with these people, that little friggin ball jus flies off my racket, how on earth do they manage to keep the ball in play, amazing.
Thanks for doing this! Brings so many memories 20 years after Bercy. It would have been great if you had interviewed him a bit more on some of the games in Paris, not the final (which he dominated), but those 2 amazing matches against Kong Linghui and Wang Liqin. Actually someone should do a point-by-point interview of those Games with Schlager. I watched a point-by-point review by Legout of his game vs Waldner. It was unbelievable! Please someone interview Schlager on a full match vs the Chinese in 2003!
This was wonderful. He completely understood your joking compliment which was great. Him blocking your best loops reminds me. Playimg Alan Hyde at an exhibition about 12 years ago. He rarely plays but in the 70s (when I was a junior) he was international England. Think he beat jonyer. I’m an average Brighton 1st div player but my loop is ok. Hitting it is hard as I could he was nonchalantly returning it while nicely saying +ve things. Really love how your improving Dan. But this with Mr Schlager is my favourite of these.
Werner was/is an entertainer, like Waldner and a few others. This to me is TT. There is playful love to the sport and the possibilities to play are plentiful. Those few played with so much creativity and unique styles. It is different to train like a machine your best shots to kill the point like the chinese do nowadays. They deserve the most respect, but thats not how you earn love !! You might the one with most titles, but TT is more than that. Millions watch Adam and the finnish guys, why is that ? Think about it. Werner you are one of my all time favourites and those two tips are gold. Thanks
Wow..when your reach the highest technic and the highest title..now you can see why they call them A Legend..playing, coaching, and also entertaining that was awesome...
Do you mean what racket he used to play when speed glueing was allowed? First he played the Primorac Offensive Tamca 5000 carbon and later he got his own butterfly blade Butterfly Schlager Offensive. It's the same composition as the Primorac with a thicker core. His rubbers were Butterfly Bryce max thickness on both sides. They aren't produced anymore. A modern player in the same style as schlager would be.... Gauzy perhaps.
@@maxbowie6074 I don’t think that’s true. Waldner is overall just a better player but Schlager was THE tactician player.
