An actual country singer I just found her a few days ago. Just amazing. No wonder country music doesn’t touch her she’s too good at actually singing country music. Actual country music! This woman should be a household name
I could watch her pick and sing ALL day EVERY day , for the rest of my life. I haven't found one of her songs I don't love. Thank you m.m. for being you.
Ladies & gentlemen let's give a huge round of applause to THE AMAZING MEAN MARY JAMES for the unbelievably great music she produces& shares with us....!!! Thank you Mary!!!!
Amazingly beautiful soul in you Mary , for I feel the pain in your voice , match the manz discontent , of being on the bench , yet another day ! You sing the pain in onez life , so that we all can feel it !
As an otr van driver I go out of my way to meet and help these people sitting in the truck stops. Each one has a unique story their life journey has taken them on. Thanks for a great message and song Mary!!! Love your videos.
Me to Richard, A bit more than 30 years ago, my wife and I were apartment managers. We were hired as a team because the property management company had a policy against employing single managers. One day, my wife decided the grass was greener somewhere else and called the management company to inform them that she was quitting, immediately. I got a call from the company to let me know that I could not be employed as a single manager. No, they could not risk having one of their managers attempting to "date" the female tenants. I was given 24 hours to vacate. Twenty-four hours later I was standing on the curb with a full understanding of just who my friends really were. It took me 2 1/2 months on the street before I was able to put a roof over my head again. I NEVER asked anyone for money and I did nothing illegal. Never forgot the lessons learned from that experience. The MOST IMPORTANT being to NEVER allow anyone to control my life. FOR ANY REASON!
Hey Richard, I've been there myself. 2 years on the streets. Hope all has worked out for the better. Personally I never felt so low as when someone just dropped a buck and walked on. Or when people look through you as if you dont exist. But I Also saw great kindness. To that I still say thanks Lillian where ever you are. She was the friend I never knew I had.
I can't wait for an outlaw movie to pick her up for the soundtrack and then we're all gonna be like "Yeah, I watched her way back when." Keep on doing what you're doing Mary!
I've seen and talked with this beautiful and wonderful, talented woman three times now and hope to make it four this year. Mary is that special kind of soul which comes into ones life but once or twice. Thanks Mary for your talent, devotion to your music, wonderful voice, and for your genuine kindness. Mary is that special to me and my wife. Plan on seeing her perform live. You wont be disappointed. Buy her CDs so you can listen to her anytime as I have.
Yes, and after you've bought all the CDs and books available on her website, and you still want to contribute more, she does have a "digital tip jar" at the bottom of the "Store" page!
People don't tend to comment on the composition of these pieces (maybe they're too blown away to notice) - but I really love the contrast of the lively, almost jaunty music; against the somber tone and content of the vocals. One tends to get deeply into one or the other... and then that final line of the last verse hits home with its hopeful, deeply-thought message. Boom. Brilliance.
He sat there on a bench, hunched against the night’s cold No jacket, just a scarf, his shoes rundown, so old He mumbled to himself, as those types often do And hugged his arms around his chest, each time the wind blew His expression made me think of a person I once knew So I threw him a dollar and his sad eyes said, “thank you” I thought, as I walked away, “that could be me someday” And many cold blocks later, that thought was there to stay CHORUS I thought about this world’s strays Its vagrants, tramps, its castaways, Someone’s child, a mom or dad, Or the friend I never had? I walked the long walk back, against a driving sleet Filled with good intentions, and a measure of conceit The icy bench was empty, but his scarf, it still lay there I sat down beside it, and began to really care Chilled to the bone I wrapped his scarf around my collar Hours passed, people passed, one tossed me a dollar I felt the icy blasts of wind, I felt the falling snow I felt so much wiser then, than just three hours ago, CHORUS At three a.m. a man came by, He gave me quite a start When he sat down by me, I felt the beating of my heart He didn’t say a word, just sat there really still And though we’d never met, I felt I knew him well Another hour passed as we endured the winter storm But, when he arose to leave, I suddenly felt warm His hopeful eyes met mine and I felt him search me deep As darkness closed around him, I heard, “Feed my sheep”
Damn, lady. That is great. It took six years for one of your songs to pop up on my radar, but I regularly Iron Horse. Your banjo play is amazing. Thank you.
knowing now, after watching so much of mean marys music, i stand by original statement, this has so many genres going on, wonderfully played and composed, what a woman.

What I have gleaned from the many videos and comments is that "mean" is quite the incorrect adjective for this exceptional musician.

Mary, Another excellent Video and song.. Loved the whole "Cold" Album, and of course all Your Albums.. Hope to see you soon in Tucson,AZ....
Another great song from Mary! Poor Frank out in the cold! What would we do without hot drinks in the winter time!
Wow very powerful .................... top stuff Mary..........
He sat there on a bench, hunched against the night’s cold
No jacket, just a scarf, his shoes rundown, so old
He mumbled to himself, as those types often do
And hugged his arms around his chest, each time the wind blew
His expression made me think of a person I once knew
So I threw him a dollar and his sad eyes said, “thank you”
I thought, as I walked away, “that could be me someday”
And many cold blocks later, that thought was there to stay
CHORUS
I thought about this world’s strays
Its vagrants, tramps, its castaways,
Someone’s child, a mom or dad,
Or the friend I never had?
I walked the long walk back, against a driving sleet
Filled with good intentions, and a measure of conceit
The icy bench was empty, but his scarf, it still lay there
I sat down beside it, and began to really care
Chilled to the bone I wrapped his scarf around my collar
Hours passed, people passed, one tossed me a dollar
I felt the icy blasts of wind, I felt the falling snow
I felt so much wiser then, than just three hours ago,
CHORUS
At three a.m. a man came by, He gave me quite a start
When he sat down by me, I felt the beating of my heart
He didn’t say a word, just sat there really still
And though we’d never met, I felt I knew him well
Another hour passed as we endured the winter storm
But, when he arose to leave, I suddenly felt warm
His hopeful eyes met mine and I felt him search me deep
As darkness closed around him, I heard, “Feed my sheep”
Fabulous Mary.....so well done without being preachy. Thanks for the awesome video!
