I was there three times between 1981 and 1984. I was a US sailor. I was there once in 81 when I was being prepped for overseas duty on board the USS Midway in Japan. Once in 83 when I was sent to hydraulics, pneumatics and elevator school. The school was there on the island, and once in 84 when I was discharged from the Navy at the end of my active duty obligation. I remember vividly, waking up early in the morning on my way to the chow hall for breakfast, and looking out over the bay to see the Golden Gate bridge sticking up out of the fog and seeing the light break the fog from the Alcatraz lighthouse. I will never forget the sounds of foghorns from the tugs and ships as they came in and out of the bay, heading to who knows where. The sound of the seagulls as they flew along the rocky shore, and the water as it lapped up against the rocks. Treasure Island holds wonderful memories for me.

Wow-a lot has changed in 40 years... I learned to swim in that pool. It used to be covered by a large bldg. and had diving boards at the deep end. We lived at 1216 D Gate view 1969-1972
YBI had the officer houses that looked like Mansions.....

I was stationed on T. I. in the early 90's while I transitioned out. Gate Guard/Honor Guard....WHAT A VIEW! I enjoyed that view every time I went to work. Now who can say that!? I lived in base housing also. Being "stationed" on T.I. was not the most glorious of my duty stations but it was certainly the best. I know it is still used to some degree but the island could have been used for something wonderful, to bad it isn't be used to it's full potential.

Definately, it's sad that the Navy abandoned TI.
I was there for class A, radar school, what about you?

My training helped me for my civilian career, I worked on merchant shipborne electronics, I retired a year ago.
Will re-visit SF from september 16th to 25th, maybe we can meet and have a beer if you still live near SF.

    Damage Controlman (Shipfitter) "A" school.
It's what lead me to a career in firefighting, but I still regret getting out. I'd be retired for four years by now. Ah, youthful indiscretion...

I was there 20 years after you were, shipmate.
I remember the Officer of the Deck chewing our asses for riding skateboards down the spiral ramp inside those buildings.
Sad what it looks like now, huh?

Not bad. Just two problems: 1) You need to ditch that pathetic Cubs shirt for a proper Giants shirt. 2) T.I. isn't just "San Franciso's neighbor in the Bay". It may be separated from the rest of the City by a small amount of water, but it is in fact part of SF, not a separate city. So it would be more accurate to call it "San Francisco's neighborhood in the Bay."
