- On Sunday January 22nd the most prestigious surf event on the planet took place for only the 10th time ever. In historic swell conditions, The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, named after the legendary lifeguard who was lost at sea, hosted 40 big wave specialists, including multiple world champs and the by the end of the day, the winner had amassed two perfect scores and nearly two perfect heats. He, too, is a North Shore lifeguard and he did it all while on duty, in between tourist rescues and bandaging other competitors. This is his story. Enjoy.

Luke is my hero! His actions speak so loudly. I would not place the word 'Warrior' on Luke. That implies WAR. Luke does not seem like a man of WAR. I would 1000% call him a true HERO!!!
Most likable surfer. Just pure class.
Everyone knew this Eddie would be special, Luke winning while also protecting the beach makes it legendary. This will forever be remembered as one of the top moments in surfing as well as in sports in general. Congrats Luke, you are the perfect example of living as Eddie Aikau would have.

Great interview. It is so cool how he won while lifeguarding. Competing on his breaks??! Legendary - and so very appropriate for The Eddie. I absolutely loved watching every minute of this fantastic event. And then spending the next week watching the awesome vlogs that followed. 😏

Mahalo Nui for respectfully thoughtful questions. I grew up surfing late 50’s S CA, 60’s NS, early 70’s Oz … so really miss the time when surfing was an outsider sport. I tried living back NS a couple times in the 2000’s but found what surfing has become so depressing … even tho I enjoy following a few of the young pro guys I like … who grew up NS … the corps have ruined NS for me … so thanks for acknowledging how corp commercial has ruined what some of us still miss. It was never about competition. The only ego back then was Dora … who entertained us all. Anyways, hope Luke will find a path that will work for him and his family best.

I was at 2 Eddies and saw Michael Ho do a soul arch at the shore break from 40' away.
I swear there were 50 people on the beach.
Pam Anderson was waiting for the toilet with about 20 girls in front and they kept calling here to cut the line, and she kept saying no.
She was more beautiful in real life than on T.V.

Luke has reset big wave surfing
After 12.5 yrs of Handboarding XXLG RockPiles,my #came up on 12/4/91.as a 2hr session went from 4'-6' Hawaiian to 16'+ Hawaiian scale in 20min.going for a late drop on a 12'er got clipped backdooring a thick dredging left driven into the reef&TKOed.
crackedscull&Folded right shoulder blade.Was told I wasn't seen till 4waves later floating unconscious.Steve Macken charged out and pulled me in thru macking Insanity's and brought me back with CPR&M2M.Had met Luke's Mom just 12 hours earlier.had gave her my #Told her how Beautiful she is and please let me take u to any place she wanted to for dinner.she called me 4days after my NDE and the rest is History.
