Hi Friends, I recently had a chance to sit down with my good friend Dave Jerden and I have to say is that it was a rather exciting chat! We talked about the song "Man In The Box" by Alice in Chains that he Produced, Engineered and Mixed! This is a big song, when this song came out I don't believe I had heard guitar and drums that sounded as big as they do in this song. - Nothing sounded quite as big as this song in 1990! Please let me what songs you'd like to know more about the Production process on!

AIC and your father working with them is the whole reason I'm into music and possibly why I'm still alive!!!! To this day. When I was younger things weren't too easy and I felt comfort in this band! To this day I'm obsessed with their music.

@@christophery9699 yes, it’s always been me and My Daddy Duck! He calls me little Duck and oh man, the stories I could tell. I always admired him for going after his dream, making that dream come true and for making the ultimate sacrifice of traveling around the world, producing and engineering to support us in the way he always wanted to. He’s so cool that when I had my kids, he didn’t want to be called grandpa, he wanted to be called “ Cool Dave” lol. I’ve often thought of writing a book called “You can’t make this shit up” because the life my Dad has lived, and the life we’ve lived, the Amazing people we’ve had the pleasure to meet, and the Amazing, true stories of people who one can only dream of hanging out with. You just can’t make this shit up.. that’s why I would name my book that lol! Thank You so much for the kind words. Oh, if you go to the video of Chris Cornell live on The David Letterman show, he’s singing the song “The Keeper” if you look, I made several replies to one person on there, Rose something (I’m terribly sorry I don’t remember the exact name) anyway I tell a stories to her about my Dad you’d probably get a kick out of. I have “The Keeper” tattooed on me because Chris Played that song for my Dad before releasing it. His passing was absolutely devastating, so to honor him I had that tattooed. My Dad is literally the most Brilliant Man I know. ⭐️

Thanks to Dave for the Shout out! I worked at that syndicated Rock Network out of Dallas Texas. It was called ZRock. We broke Alice In Chains. We also broke Rage Against The Machine, Killing In The Name. I remember recording it to reel to reel then editing all the Fuck you’s. I reversed them so I didn’t lose the intensity of the song. Then played it on my Sunday night show, Wounded Radio. This is about 3 weeks before the record company, Epic, had an edited version. The band did not want to release the edit. Good old days!!

Hey, since you worked for ZRock, do you know of a song called "The Fallen King"? There's a search for the artist who made it, and it's believed to have been broadcast on ZRock. IF you want to hear it, just search for the title on youtube, it has a sort of fantasy/ medieval thumbnail photo.

This is everything that is right with the internet. For music lovers this is just priceless. It is also refreshing to hear the respect that Dave has for AIC. Clearly the producer played a major role in their first major recording; however, he does not attempt to "hog" the credit rather he just states that he helped them focus where to go with their sound. I love the dissonance with the c note played along with the low d, it really adds to the darknesss of the track. Also those famous perfect 4ths vocal harmonies became a real standard of AIC. I've seen a recent rick beato analysis of this track saying jerry sang the harmonies - a big rock secret haha. Great video guys.

So awesome to actually hear how that came together. This song is one of my all time favorites, the vocals are just incredible. I paused this video mid-way through, went out to my studio, sliced up my speaker frequency ranges to grab low end off my G12K (ditching the high mids and high white noise), took the upper mids and high end off the V30... and finally dialed in the guitar sound I have been searching forever but not getting. I never thought to use high and low pass filters to grab the "best" (and only the best) part of the range of each speaker before and blend them together; I'd only tried blending the entire speaker before. That... is amazing secret sauce. Thanks for sharing!

Warren, your last interview with Dave was posted April 7 (2015.) You missed it by 1 day. 🤷🏻‍♀️ This is a great vid. When I got my very first CD player, I was pretty broke, so I was only able to buy 3 albums for the first few months. Alice in Chains, Bon Jovi, and Faster Pussycat (I graduated a year after Brett Bradshaw, who I thought was the hottest guy in our high school.) I had always thought AIC was multiple vocalists, and it was such a unique sound to compliment the lyrics. It’s genius that Dave thought of Bon Jovi for the talk box. It was such a great addition! Thanks for another super interview! Thank you to Dave for sharing his wisdom. ❤️

Loved your first interview with Dave Jerden, mostly about how Dirt was recorded. Great to hear about his very first efforts with AIC!

The vocal tracks 28 minutes-in are insanely good. Layne's ability to nail the pitch and hold it like that is not easy. Thanks Warren!

So cool to see the man behind Alice in Chains sound! The band being incredibly talented were also truly lucky to have a producer that believed in the band and knew how to get them into that sonic space. The sound is just amazing. Im one of your people. Love it.

This series is truly brilliant, Warren. Would love to hear you do any Black Sabbath song or album, especially the debut effort. It is just so raw and primal, like cold water thrown in the face. I'm old enough to remember it's impact back in 1970. Please keep these coming, sir.

Ah yes. Dave Jerden. The first engineer/producer I ever discovered from purposrly looking at the liner notes to find out who recorded the record that was in that moment blowing my mind and changing my musical world view. 1989. Desperate for something new and exciting to listen to, I went down to the record store and bought JA’s Nothing’s Shocking having never heard their music or knowing anything about them beyond an acquaintance mention their name. Walked home on that bright spring Colorado afternoon, smoked a joint, set my boombox on my lap and put in the cassette... life changed. I instantly wanted to know every detail. The name Dave Jerden was burned into my memory right alongside the members of the band. Still get chills listening to that record.

I had a similar experience Daniel. Nothing sounded like Nothing's Shocking at the time. It was really heavy but not necessarily metal and nothing sounded like it at the time. Dave Jerden got such a thick guitar sound. This was before Nevermind. Guitar rock was alive and well.

I believe Dave Jerden was referring to the TX radio station ZRock that picked up AiC's tune. We had their feed in Phoenix for a while thankfully. That was the very first time I heard "Man in the Box." Totally blown away.

I repeat myself :), but I was never a metal guy, although this does often not apply to "alternative rock". And these songs, were simply musical, not pure shreddage.
Your song choices for this series are great Sir! Please continue, Warren. Thanks alot.
