It's actually because you're just outside his hitbox. You can stand anywhere in large rooms and not get "found" as long as you're out of the hitbox range. I just tend to stand out in the open, no hiding or crouching when i get large rooms, and an angler is coming. 😂 It's fun watching them go past me and do nothing.
