The Bondi beach and the life guards just amaze me, where I’m from ( South India) we have mostly seas, still most people won’t go that far into the water .This is like a very powerful ocean and still people are playing in it like it’s a backyard pool , no wonder these poor life guards are rescuing all day 😮 Mad respect to the heroes of the beach🫡
@@BondiRescue I've only started seeing lifeguards very recently, but i can only talk about one state that I've experienced out of all the many states with beaches. we also usually have calmer seas than Bondi for sure
i really want to come to bondi and meet the lifeguards. bondi beach would not be the same without the lifeguards. its the inly thing i can actually watch without getting bored off it. there lifesavers in and out of the water. hopefully one day i can come down and meet the lifeguards!! sorcha!!
I think that it is very common for mentally healthy people not to realize the compromised position a potentially suicidal person is coming from. I hope that girl is getting help.
exactly what i was thinking, she needs an assessment for her mental health. stuff like that can be so so dangerous, i feel for her even 12 years later. hope she's well.
I think one of the biggest challenges with the flag system is determining what areas are "between the flags" and what areas are "outside the flags" because as someone who can't recognize what a rip in the water even looks like, and all the flags being identical, I can see how it'd be easy to misunderstand which areas are outside the flagged off safe zone and which areas are dangerous
I agree the flag system needed to be upgraded to a large sign to all visitors in multiple languages. I can see how people would seriously be confused about where to swim.
@@tjmiller5060 Yup, or a flag system where it's 2 distinct flag colours per section, lets say a solid yellow and a solid orange, then they could designate like the yellow flag is the start of the safe zone, and the orange flag is the end of the safe zone, swim in that designated safer zone. Or the other way of doing it, still 2 flags per zone, but the 2 are the same colour and any other safe zones would be different colour flags, that way theres no mixing up which areas are safe and which areas aren't.
I think two-sided signs would be better with something like "swimming zone" and "drowning zone" on each side. They could use pictograms to make it more clear to people who don't speak English.
@@NoodlesStick what's interesting is I've never heard them talk about black and white flags, just the red and yellow flags and having never been there myself I'm just speculating on how I feel it'd be easy to misinterpret.
We were at Clovelly beach next to Bondi for NY 2019. One person was drown and pass away. It was really sad to witness incident like this on NY. The lifeguards tried to help but they can be everywhere at the same time. Look how busy the beaches are during those holiday time.
I cannot even imagine hanging out on beach moreless the water with that many people around. I don't typically have social anxiety or anything like that. But holy moly even watching the clip makes me anxious. I could never. How is that fun?

The poor lifeguards especially on New Year’s Day, they spent it at the beach away from their family, they showed up an hour early and stayed hours later
We were on Myrtle Beach South Carolina this weekend. On Saturday the rips were ripping. We made sure to stay at the beach's edge until the waves calmed down some. There was not a life guard in at least 5 miles. No one in our area went to far in the water.
oof!! i feel for that poor kid. i stubbed my toe on asphalt BADLY as a kid and let me tell you, washing that cut was the second worst injury experience in my life.
Got to admit bondi lifeguards are one of the most modern lifeguards, honestly this gear in 2012? Should be pretty cool to see really. I’ve been to beaches in beaches in 2012 the life gaurds didn’t even have radios neither medical…. glad you guys are mordenized even in 2012.😊
A bit rich to put the responsibility on the friend who is also likely intoxicated. It really is a nuisance and a silly thing to do, but blaming the friend is a bit of a stretch.
I can understand the frustration of these lifeguards. 7:00 p.m. time to go home and the fact that there was still people on the beach that were drunk they shouldn't feel guilty for doing everything they can to warn them before they left
Ironic. 2012 was the year the Canadian Government cancelled the Surf Lifeguard program at Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park. Since then we've lost, on average, one person per year. The only 'lifeguards' are local surfers and surf instructors. Oh - and there are signs warning you to avoid rips and 'not to hit your head'. The last petition from the locals, begging for lifeguards, was in 2023. The answer from Ottawa, was 'NO'.
I feel like foreigners see red and yellow flags and think that means danger, in USA our lifeguards use green flags for safe swimming zone and red flags mean danger or stop. So could be their flags are confusing people
@@ykook7000Red and yellow are not very intuitive colours (red and yellow means danger in nature) but yes, beach goers should look up the flags of the beach they go too.
I grew up on the coast in the UK with relatively safe waters, and I won't go near the sea without making sure I knew where it was safe and what signs meant what - if I was on a beach in an unfamiliar country, I would do exactly the same thing. There are signs at the entrance explaining what the flags are. Also if you see a picture of someone swimming with a large red x through it, that should be self-explanatory
I'm pretty sure that girl was either wanting to be rescued or she was contemplating something and changed her mind. I hope she got the help she clearly needed. Her friend is clearly not happy ...
I'm sorry but that woman who intentionally put herself in danger shouldn't have had to be taken by police. She should have gone to the hospital in an ambulance and put on a psych hold for evaluation. Obviously this episode is from 2012 and I'm glad to see that we have more awareness now of these kinds of mental health situations. I hope she ended up getting the help she needed for her mental health and wellbeing.
