I had a guy bring a Saab 900 Turbo to me, in the early 1980's complaining of lack of performance. When I took it for a test drive I found it had dreadful performance, and noticed that the boost gauge barely moved no matter how much I pushed down on the throttle. When I put the car up on a 4-post lift, I found it had a new exhaust fitted, but that had it no obvious leaks. On opening the bonnet, the source of the problem was fairly obvious; virtually the entire turbocharger body was covered in a thick layer of freshly hardened exhaust jointing paste. After asking the owners permission to chip this paste away, we found a lengthly crack running all the way from one of the four front pipe mounting flange bolt holes of the turbo to the actual exhaust turbine housing of the turbocharger, with smaller cracks running from two of the other bolt holes. He'd had the new exhaust ( all stainless steel ) fitted by a national 'fast-fit' chain a week previously and when he'd gone back to them, they'd simply told him it wasn't an exhaust problem because they couldn't find a leak in the new exhaust fitted, and suggested that possibly the car needed to 'get used' to having a new exhaust fitted ........!!! The head office of the company concearned paid the bill for a new turbocharger fitted by a Saab dealership.
I took my bmw x5 for tyres changed yesterday. I watched them do it and they took off with impact wrench but putting the lug bolts back on the guy did it properly. Tightend by fingers then torque up to 140 nm. They did a brill job
Haha manchester buddy. Im a car enthusiast and a home diy mecanic so i watched them carefully. The staff in carpark had a golf gti clubsport and a45 amg 1st gen so probs they were car heads themselfs im guessing.
Thanks for mentioning that about refering to technical specs. As someone whos starting out jn the trade it annoys me how people dont check if thjngs are tightened or done to manufacturers specs 💯💯💯
You lads look to be doing some great work👍🏻 Wheel nuts are typically 100Nm... Which doesn't feel like a lot on a 2' long torque wrench. But people forget, a) you've got 4/5 of them and b) it's lateral load they're resisting... The weight of the car actually sits on the central flange not the studs.
You English boys and your euro cars😂.Checked mine just now to make sure I wasn't mixing up units - nop, definitely "88-118 Nm". You can do the math but that's like 500kg axial clamping force per bolt! You can hang like twice the car's weight off each wheel! Darn those German panzerwagons must be gripping in the corners like they on rails!
@@neil1997 You yanks don't need the wheel nuts so tight, because you don't go around any corners lol .... Every yank 'race' on youtube is from one set of traffic lights down a big wide straight road to the next set of light lol b o r i n g. We English need skills to drive properly son 🤭
I always loosen the wheel nuts with the car on the ground. Then nip them back up before raising the car. Doing it that way means I'm not torquing wheel nuts against the gearbox or handbrake. I'm not a mechanic, but that seems a slightly better way of doing it.
That's why it's best to always use a torque wrench rather than be feel or rushing things with an impact. Also, it's best not to get cheap tools since they do break fair enough I do understand that he's mobile and there's the risk of tools getting stolen 💯💯
I used to use the bar the other way standing on it gently bounce on it with a prop of wood under the knuckle until it cracked.....don't why you try the other way....-4deg would not have helped....great vid.5stars
Such tight wheel bolts are a disaster! The only option from experience... take a wheel cross + 2 long pipes that don't have too much play and 2 people. Then place the pipes approximately horizontally and with a lot of luck you will succeed!
Think of get a couple of large sheets of ply/OSB to cover your work space under the vehicles Will be better for you to lay on (warmer and drier) and keep your clients driveway cleaner and save time cleaning up (looking at the nice block paving that BMW is on)
Never use Halfords for anything. When it comes to changing parts or fixing a vehicle. All these place Kwik fit, Halfords are only after your money all are very poor standards when it comes to a customer’s vehicle. All work to a time limit and do the job as quick as possible to a low standard. Your local garage or mobile mechanic will always provide a high standard and the best parts within your budget. Always use your local garage or mobile mechanic.
I used Halfords “tyres on the drive” to change two of my front tyres. I had to call them back 3 times as the left front kept losing air after they changed it(wasn’t losing air beforehand) after the third time I got fed up, so I kept topping up the air in the tyre every couple of weeks for about a year (2/3psi), then I had to have the troublesome tyre removed after 1 year as I got a bloody great nail stuck in there, so I decided to get them to put a new tyre on just incase it was a crappy tyre losing air. So I got my local tyre fitters to put a new tyre on, after they fitted it, it’s never lost any air at all. Moral of the story is, don’t ever use Halfords for your car needs, even a simple tyre change!
Love BMWs grate car reliable and genuine cars I own one not had one problem and done 83,000 miles in 3 years got it brand new never miss a beat that’s reliability
Anyone who takes their car to Halfords for mechanical work or repair, deserves everything they get. Halfords are one tiny step up from the bottom, where Motasave and KwikFit scum are.
A different company decided to torque up the wheel nuts on my Impreza WRX STI so tightly with an air gun that when I went to take a wheel off which was unfortunately some time later so I couldn't prove it was them it stripped out the internals of the locking wheel nut socket. I tried one of these kits after having to Dremel through the rotating sleeve to find that it didn't fit well enough So it cost me £80 to have the lock nuts removed, plus the cost of the kit plus the cost of a new lock wheel set. Next time I get the tyres changed I'm taking the lock nuts off myself..
I would never use anything smaller than 1/2 socket to remove a wheel but. Whenever I go for new tyres, I remove locking wheel nut so they don't chew it up. When they're finished I slacken off each nut and tighten up with my own torque wrench, before I leave.

Marvellous : you need a 3/4” socket set my friend as I’ve had (not quite that bad with that Beamer) but not far off & 3/4 will be a lot easier , I also use 1” sometimes (bit over the top I know but more leaverage) makes my tasks much easier , keep em coming 😀
@@themarvelousvlog some good quality 3/4” sets out there M’ for affordable prices like US Pro , sometimes used Britool sets (used to be made in Cannock not far from me) until Facom took over & moved to France , but I use Halfords tools too , as I have a trade card I have same trolley jack as yourself x2 the 3 Ton version & use the 6Ton axle stands (not Halfords branded) as I think are much safer to work under plus they are higher giving me room to manoeuvre around under the car etc hope you & John are keeping well regards 👍🤝❤️🚗
Did they not use copper grease at Halfords? I ended up welding a big nut on the wheel bolt when I had this problem at home. I`m a crap welder so it was a pain lol.
Heavy flat faced drift punch and a heavy hammer, Hold flat on stud and smack hard and positively. Shock often jars threads and should wind out with yor strong bar. It like breaks tight seal lads......
Couple of things, if It was me after the 2nd wheel nut I'd have told the customer to take it back to Halfords and call when ready. The last one you couldn't get off you could try this, drop it to the ground put another wheel nut on, drive it back and forth and that should be enough to get the tight nut off.
Why do fast fit garages impact gun lockers on. First thing i do when buying any new car is get rid them. Imagine getting flatty side road and not be able to find that s*** 😮😢
Funny enough I've just been watching @torque test channel on RUclips about different impact wrench tests I think that would be a good watch on what Beast you need for the future should you encounter a similar issue
The last time I let halfords talk into letting fit parts on my car it was new headlight bulbs, on my first car a mk1.5 focus & I ended up having to fit it as they couldn't work out how to, & they refused to refund me as I had left the shop even though I had to be out there for them to fit it.
I have lost my trust in Halfords as well. 2, maybe 3 years ago I've bought front and rear dash cam in their Leicester shop but they couldn't mount it for me (well understaffed shop) and I have been directed to their Melton Mowbray branch. I dropped my car (Volvo V60 Cross Country) and been told to pick it up in 2hrs. I did that, job done and after maybe a week after I have realised that something is rattling on a back of a car. When i opened a boot I realised that a top trim is hanging slightly on one side. Closer look with a flash light and spotted a roll of a duct tape holding a trim. They have broke a piece of a clip holding a top trim. If this would have been everything, then OK and IMHO they should have replace a clip or tell me what's happen and I could buy a clip myself, no issue. What they did instead was they took a file and got a rid of a mount of that clip on the trim itself, then rolled a bit of a duct tape and stick it on to a trim so it wasn't visible on the beginning. Obviously, after few days this sticky tape hasnt been holding properly anymore and hence those rattles. I went back in there a week or so after but they have been saying it wasn,t them....
It’s not just Halfords. A lot but not all fast fits are the same. Dont let them near it. My daughter’s brake caliper seized on 1.0 yaris. New caliper discs and pads, far from home xmas eve. £750 scum
Things we tried off camera: -Cracking it on the ground -Driving on 2 wheel bolts -Mallet the shit out of the wheel/tyre -Struck it with chisel You name it. Shit just won’t move
Fair play to you guys for trying, but this is stuff you learn as you go along. Get a piece of round bar, say 20x200mm and a big hammer then a few good whacks on the bolt might shock it enough to come out. Welder is last resort
Tried other things off camera ‘trade tricks’ as they call it but it’s in there. Likely that the bolt went in sideways so they just sent it home instead
I had the same problem with my bmw 3 series F30 Lug bolt. I initially used a 3/8 turbo socket with the halfords 3/8 breaker bar which broke. I used a halfords 3/8 to 1/2 impact adaptor and used my 1/2 breaker bar but the adaptor broke... Eventually, what worked in the end was buying a 1/2 turbo socket from amazon so I was able to use my 1/2 breaker bar without the adaptor. I also did use penetrating oil for a few days and when I did remove the lug bolt, I applied heat to the disc. (I didnt apply the oil at the same time as the heat as its flamable lol). Which I don't know if it helped but I was desperate to try anything and I was gonna change the break disc anyway.
Drive the car with front brake dragging to heat the disk. The bolts are still colder than surrounding disk metal and will be looser than if you heat a bolt in a cold hole
3/8 drive? For wheel bolts? 1/2 drive minimum and get black hardened sockets. Also a car with wheel bolts too tight is liable to shear them all at once and the wheel comes off. Halfords should remove and replace they wheel bolts.
I did use 3/8 as well as it broke 2 of my half inch turbo sockets and half inch breaker bar. No choice but to use half in to 3/8 adapter unfortunately 🥲

Invest in snap on 17mm socket or a little snap on wheel nut set. They’re well worth it as they grab the bolts. Mac tools are as good. Protective Halfords ones are good but I find the ‘rounded nut’ capability of snap on/Mac tools are well worth it especially for that bmw palaver.

Let me know where this is, I’ll hire this mechanic in question 😂
Haha manchester buddy. Im a car enthusiast and a home diy mecanic so i watched them carefully. The staff in carpark had a golf gti clubsport and a45 amg 1st gen so probs they were car heads themselfs im guessing.
Had the same experience in an ATS Euromaster. Did it properly which was surprising given my experience at a different ATS!
depends on the mechanic , there are good and bad everywhere .@@khalidacosta7133
Removing wheel nuts with an impact wrench isn't a problem, it's over-tightening when doing them up that does all the damage.
Thanks for mentioning that about refering to technical specs. As someone whos starting out jn the trade it annoys me how people dont check if thjngs are tightened or done to manufacturers specs 💯💯💯
Haven’t had a bolt my Milwaukee 1/2” high torque could not undo, with a high output battery. Is that what you guys tried??
You lads look to be doing some great work👍🏻
Wheel nuts are typically 100Nm... Which doesn't feel like a lot on a 2' long torque wrench. But people forget, a) you've got 4/5 of them and b) it's lateral load they're resisting... The weight of the car actually sits on the central flange not the studs.
140nm
@@GeorgeAusters Yep 100% correct. My last 6 cars have all stated 140nm in the owners manual.
This had me looking up my spec, as I do them to 105 lbf Thankfully same as 140 nm.
Great work, as always, guys.
What camera setup and mic are you using in this video?
We currently use DJI Action 4 and GoPro Hero 12 with their built-in mic. We are investing in heavier equipments soon!
Such tight wheel bolts are a disaster!
The only option from experience... take a wheel cross + 2 long pipes that don't have too much play and 2 people.
Then place the pipes approximately horizontally and with a lot of luck you will succeed!
Think of get a couple of large sheets of ply/OSB to cover your work space under the vehicles
Will be better for you to lay on (warmer and drier) and keep your clients driveway cleaner and save time cleaning up (looking at the nice block paving that BMW is on)
Never use Halfords for anything.
Can’t agree enough mate
Do you work on vans diesel???
I took my car to halfords for a brake fluid change and they fucked up two of the bleed valves so a few weeks later they started pissing out fluid
They didn’t wanna say anything, no? That’s just jarring…
You should update us on how Halfords deal with the situation.
Definitely will as long as the owner wishes to share this information 😅
Why did you not go back to Halfords 2 hours ago .
What tools make are you using for the BMW
Snap-on, Blue-point, Halfords, Facom and Teng 🙂
Fun little fact a lot of the torque spec on wheels are same lot of time as the pcd of the wheels…
I would never use anything smaller than 1/2 socket to remove a wheel but. Whenever I go for new tyres, I remove locking wheel nut so they don't chew it up. When they're finished I slacken off each nut and tighten up with my own torque wrench, before I leave.
I've had issues with wheel bolts on an F30 3 Series. The F20 1 Series I serviced recently was a breeze by comparison.

1 thing see the excel stands there is a tab on one side nock it in it will stop the peace falling out the top when you pick them up from the black peace
Really enjoy your videos because you show how to content…and explain why and how to fix certain issues….keep it up I can see your channel going far…..
I will be buying that for sure. I’ve also ordered weighted sockets now for the just in case
Love your approach !
That was hilarious, attempting to remove wheel bolts with chocolate tools 😂😂😂
Butter*** 😂😂😂
Did they not use copper grease at Halfords? I ended up welding a big nut on the wheel bolt when I had this problem at home. I`m a crap welder so it was a pain lol.
I want to see how they get those wheels off.
Bloomin ek that was tight, might be worth carrying some 3/4 gear as well😊
Heavy flat faced drift punch and a heavy hammer, Hold flat on stud and smack hard and positively. Shock often jars threads and should wind out with yor strong bar. It like breaks tight seal lads......
If you have a stuck wheel bolt/nut put the other ones back in and torque them up THEN use your impact driver on the stuck one 😉
They probably messed up the threads on the BMW. At least the front bearing comes with the hub once they manage to drill it out or snap it off...
Couple of things, if It was me after the 2nd wheel nut I'd have told the customer to take it back to Halfords and call when ready.
The last one you couldn't get off you could try this, drop it to the ground put another wheel nut on, drive it back and forth and that should be enough to get the tight nut off.
Tried that, didn’t work. Didn’t wanna drive any further as I don’t want the wheel to fall off 😅
@@themarvelousvlog Well said. I've just subscribed.
Halford took over National tyres recently
No jack pads?
Of course there is mate
First mistake using 3/8 ally wheels don’t help tight fitting socket ❤but that’s ridiculous
Smashing out the content! You must be putting in some graft! Looking after newborn, editing and doing the day job. Top man!
Why do fast fit garages impact gun lockers on. First thing i do when buying any new car is get rid them. Imagine getting flatty side road and not be able to find that s*** 😮😢
how many times do you see garages put wheels on with a gun, every time i get my tyres done i insist that i put the wheel nuts on myself
I put them on with an impact BUT only until I get to the first impact. I then lower it and torque to spec. You’ll see this in my other videos
Never heard someone say negative 4 about the weather lol
Watching too much American shite 😂
Funny enough I've just been watching @torque test channel on RUclips about different impact wrench tests I think that would be a good watch on what Beast you need for the future should you encounter a similar issue
Had it on my sons wheel all 5 bolts. Would not let Halfords or similar near my car.
This is the number 1 bodge job in the world 😂
I’m sorry to hear this!
0:54 what reputation 😅😅
Iv had afew cars at my garage from hailfords simple bulb change and thay broke the headlamp just unskilled workers that need to use torque wrenches
Need advice can you change the mileage from kph to mph on vw polo 2016
I think there is an option on VCDS. I’m not sure 🤔
It’s not just Halfords. A lot but not all fast fits are the same. Dont let them near it. My daughter’s brake caliper seized on 1.0 yaris. New caliper discs and pads, far from home xmas eve. £750 scum
Needed literally an hour of labour, a wire brush and some ceramic grease right✌🏻
Not £750… damn the money that they made!
Didn’t think about cracking the nuts before lifting the car? Funniest 10 minutes I’ve watched. What a couple of spanners 😂😂😂
Things we tried off camera:
-Cracking it on the ground
-Driving on 2 wheel bolts
-Mallet the shit out of the wheel/tyre
-Struck it with chisel
You name it. Shit just won’t move
Ironic there's a Halfords ad on you video..🤣
Oh no 😂😂😂🤢
Fair play to you guys for trying, but this is stuff you learn as you go along.
Would those expensive 7 series wheels be damaged, ie cracked, because of that overtightening?
It can happen. I just hope it didn’t get to that point 🥲
Well, at least that wheel wasn't going to fall off unexpectedly!
Don't ever take your motor to Halfords, got collage students working there that have NO IDEA ............ NO IDEA 😐
Long 3/4 breaker bar...use it all time for these scenarios 😮
That Mechanic Garage should have been able to diagnose that Vauxhall Corsa with their Pico Scope..! 🤔🤔😇😇
@@themarvelousvlog I get it, you gotta try brother. Id rarely us a 3/8 drive on anyhing bigger than a 13mm. Great videos, i had a small garage up till 6 years ago. Rheumatoid Arthritis got to me. Nowadays my left elbow hurts almost constantly. Keep up the good work man.
Had it with a lot of local tyre shops where I can’t get wheels off after I’ve even managed to break locking wheel nut keys then I’m really in the shit I’ve had to use 3/4 bars with a 1/2 adapter with those extractor sockets on wheel bolts for a Nissan micra people don’t realise the power these modern battery guns have I’ve got the Milwaukee m18 fuel 1/2 and 3/4 gun but I’m a heavy mechanic it’s crazy they can take wheels of the trucks and people use them to bang up wheel bolts on cars
Bro , you just need two hammers i think 😅 . I do that all the time with bmw, minis locking wheelnuts . They should come off base on my experience with them
On that Corsa.. The blocked DPF probably CAUSED the failed turbo
Heat is for busting corrosion. It doesn't make tight things less tight
That’s interesting. Please elaborate 🤔
@@themarvelousvlog It's the expansion/contraction of a fastener that breaks the corrosion when seized in place. If you heat something that's already tight, it just becomes hot and tight!
4:34 should have tried heating the discs through the wheel
Impact hammers are helpful with these, however when rounded may not be as useful
Put the Jack under your extension and you wil have better torgue
Halfords is a no no ,not mechanics just young lads .
The amount of people I know who needed to buy a new alloy wheel socket key because its miraculously "broken" at the garage. Can guarantee its broken on an impact gun which your not supposed to use them on for removal or tightening.
As dogey as it sounds you should of taken it a drive round the block with only the 1 wheel bolt in place, after a short drive you’ll be able to loosen it with breaker bar, had this a good few times give it a try next time lol
I was considering this. If it was a Corsa, yes I’d do it. A 2019 BMW 7 Series on the other hand… meeehhhhh 😂
Halfords {national tyres} didn't even balance my tyres properly lol, was busy taking pictures of torque measurements
this is why i buy halfords tools when they snap i just swop it for a new one
my 3/4 gun delivers 2000ft/lb or almost 3000 nm, would breaze that off without breaking a sweat
You’d probably snap the head before anything else 😂 Would love to have something like that
had an oil change at halfords had to go back 3 times as oil was overfilled i think as my car had no dipstick they were confused actually my car had 3 dipsticks who done my oil change 😂
I enjoy your videos but that was some poor work removing that bolt, so many mistakes
Hi Gents,
I'm a tad older than yourselves & have learnt plenty of automotive maintenance lessons the very hard way.
Personally, I'd have used a waaaay stronger mat black impact socket & a breaker bar. Not a nice shiny chrome vanadium socket & an extension bar attached to a socket wrench 😮
But I did write this comment after only watching 25% of the video. So please forgive me if you eventually did what I've suggested? 🙂
Ah, no 😅 never used an impact. I have them, but doesn’t come in our case of Halfords set. We, 90% of the time can’t be asked to take our black sockets out. I do have a plan to swap them out though 😂🥲😅
If u had a straight bar believe u me you wouldn’t have snapped all them tool bits!
Use an impact driver and releasing fluid overnight..
