Got a neighbour who has a 2012 320d 185,000 miles no problems. Oil changed every 5000 miles. I also have the updated B47 engine in my BMW X1 and no problems but only 13000 on the clock. Only mechanics who touch it are BMW. Problems seem to arise when fast fit mechanics try and work on BMWs and they are out of their depth. Great to see you guys using the correct torque settings.
Hey Guys love the Vids Keep them coming. On a side note i think you guys would really benefit from getting a canopy one that is 2.4m diameter would be great for keeping you guys dry i use one when cutting things out in the rain at the back of my van.
People don’t understand this- calling us unprofessional on video. In reality, we act professional when it is time to do so and + less stress = better productivity
Alright mate, next time you do this job or a timing chain. 1# Remove the anti roll bar completely 4x 13mm nuts and 2x16mm on the drop links. 2# Undo the steering rack with the 2xE12 nuts & bolts and pull it forward, leaving it connected so you can easily access the front sump bolts. 3 # Remove the sump oil sensor & dipstick tube. 4 # Sump will come right out without lifting the engine or lowering the subframe (twist and pull) Works on e87, e90, f20, f30, f10 basically anything that's 2wd Great channel btw!
Im not saying do it but I changed only the top tensioner on a rattly 2009 2.0 n47 engine and eliminated the rattle right away. At same time changed the valve cover gaskets (do that or huge fire risk incoming) and checked the chain guides. The difference in tension between the new and old tensioner were massive. Running fine many miles later. I will add that my tensioner still had 'some' tension in it and the chain was in good order. Its not a fix, its a delay with these engines.
Unfamiliar as I am with the 4pots the 6pot (N54) engines of this generation have issues when poorly maintained and can be ok if treated right....👍👌👍 Whats happening with the B58..🫣 I'm doing Cam ledges on an N54 in a week or so, should I do a video?
Love your content. Hate the N47! Wife's old 1.6 mini countryman needed to get the whole CCT, guides, chain done, and whilst they were at it, new clutch, DMFW and crankshaft pulley dampener done. Admittedly, when you consider that "sealed for life" usually equates to about 100k miles on these lumps, the materials selection, engine design and packaging make it an absolute bitch to work on. That being said, I'm used to regularly changing the camchain tensioners on my motorbikes. The moment that machine gun kelly starts running its mouth during cold starts, you know it's time to have it replaced. Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha IL4s always had the same issues.
Anorak on - the car with the problem is an E90 saloon , the photo you have is an E92 coupe. No doubt the tensioners and chain is the weak spot on the N47 as the replacements have oil journals in them to pick up more oil. I’ve had both the 123d E82 and Alpina D3 Biturbo both with the same engine. Now I have the B3 Biturbo with N54 😂
great vid lads, i did a sump last week it was leaking in same place and been re threaded i just used liquid metal customer was satisfied and it only cost him £15
I had a 2001 BMW 318 5-6 years ago, they have aluminium sump’s, so the metal is much softer, therefore easier to cross thread. I had two different garages cross thread and damage the sump! First garage that did it, I didn’t realise what happened, as I just got it back from a service, that’s when I noticed drops of oil under the car, so I took it back, the mechanic said oh I probably didn’t tighten the sump plug enough, so he nipped it up, still had the same problem. So then he re-threaded it, like your customer here did, again that didn’t work, so ended up having a second hand sump fitted. Roll on the next years service at a different garage, got the car back, I saw oil under the car again, only this time I was wise to what happened at the other garage, so I took it straight back and told them it was leaking, I said “I hope they haven’t cross threaded the bolt and damaged the sump”, and I asked to go have a look myself while it’s on a ramp, and sure enough they had damaged the sump! They did admit fault, and in the end they had to fit a brand new sump BMW! I bet that mechanic got a roasting from his boss!
Wow very similar story to this! What’s so annoying is that people don’t want to follow the torque spec because it seems ‘loose’. From what I can remember they’re only like 12-15nm, which is ‘loose’ but just gotta remember that it is an ally block and also there’s about 1000 of them holding it so no need to be tight!
@@themarvelousvlog good deal. I have only really used it on bmws. Since you have customers with Minis. On the comedy side, i heard your mate say “Aray..” 🤣 i know what he really wanted to say after that…or did you edit that out? 🤣
I’ve got a n47 engine , it’s been the most reliable engine I’ve owned, I had the chain and guides changed as temporary measure. Not saying 100% it work all the time , but literally just looking after it will make it go for so long
@@themarvelousvlog Insert that Clarkson meme of him saying "this is brilliant, but I like this" 😂 Also imo N54 still shounds better even though B58 beats it in literally every other way
Oh nooo! That tiktoker dance will attract all the birds to your channel! Next thing you know, they will be asking you about your idea of what an ideal girlfriend would be for car buts and mechsnics!😮
n47 is a great engine once you know you'll replace the chain, I have an F10, done the chain @ 90k, purely preventative, Put new injectors in too, done a gearbox service , she's 145 k now, regular serviced, no issues, pulls like a train, BMW say the chain & gearbox oil are "lifetime" parts (hence the design of the timing housing & gear box). for BMW & Regular BMTROUBLEYOU customers, the lifetime of the car is 100k miles max. A bmw will rob you if you don't treat her right! :)
Wouldn't the customer have to remove the oil pan again to get to the timing chain, tensioner and guides?? If yes, then he just wasted time and money putting the new oil pan in, without going ahead and repairing the timing chsin problems.
I wish the government didn't ban those manholes. in denmark they are illegal, so if you find a house for sale with them, it's either filled up with concrete or it's referred to as a "potatobasement". which has to be filled up.. If I ever find a house that has it unfilled, i'll keep that sucker open.
Years and years ago, my parents built a garage behind their house. My great idea was to dig a pit in the garage so that I could work on the car. My idea was vetoed, even though I volunteered to dig it myself. Even got the bricks to line it (secondhand). That was getting on for 50 years ago. Garage is still there, bricks are still there but no pit. Somehow I don’t think I’m going to bother now 😂
