Amazing all those empty super chargers. Not the case during my trip to Las Vegas where I had to queue for 20 minutes for one to become free. Too busy there.
This might be my favorite video, Collin. It shows what the Performance Model 3 can do on long trips with some real world efficiency and range results. Thank you so very, very much for documenting this!! Wonderful, real world use of the Model 3 by taking a long distance holiday trip with your mom. She's such a delight. Bears repeating: Favorite video thus far!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was really hard to document the trip in a way that was useful for all of you. Glad it worked out. Thank you for the kind words and support, as always. :)
Hey Collin. Discovered your channel and have been watching a lot of your Tesla content. I wanted to say I enjoy your style with your disarming personality and great attitude. Cleaning up at the Tesla Supercharger aligns with my own values. Keep up the terrific content! 🙂👍
What a fantastic trip with your mom, Collin! I once took my mom camping in Death Valley over Thanksgiving. We had a great time, but we got a year's worth of rain that made everything a muddy mess. We really made the best of it.
It was a blast and she loved the Tesla! So much so that she said it would be her next car. :) That sounds like a fun trip even despite the crazy rain lol. Made some good memories at least.
Great to see such a good video going from Colorado to MN. I live in western Colorado and am picking up a Standard Range+ in December. Originally from Minnesota and I've always wondered how that road trip would go with a Tesla. I'll probably have stop a few more times than you did but I'm excited to give it a go!
Another great video and very well edited keeping such a long trip interesting. Here in New Zealand we are finally counting down till we get our Model 3 and can’t wait till next month.
I'm glad you enjoyed it and it was helpful! And believe me, I was too, especially with the performance model. It was an absolute breeze. After the first segment, there were absolutely no worries we weren't going to make it. 😊
I live in Minneapolis, thanks for the vid. We road trip maybe once every 2 months or so and maybe drive an average of 300 miles in a day at the most. I used to be worried about range, but with some of the newer companies coming out with longer ranges and more places offering EV charging, it likely won’t be an issue soon. Honestly it’s nice to stop, stretch, use the bathroom every few hours on a road trip anyway. I typically like to stop every 2.5 to 3 hrs or so, any longer and it’s exhausting.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching, commenting, and supporting the channel. 😊 Congrats on the future Model 3, be sure to let me know how you like it when you take delivery!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. And I definitely thought about it! I think that would be a pretty fun race lol. I should have gotten their reactions when I gave them a ride in the Tesla... Missed opportunity.
While traveling never top off in a supercharger at least you need it. You said you will get to the next supercharger with minus 55%. Just ad 60% to what ever you have. The lower you get to the supercharger the fastest it charger and less time you spend at the SC. From 80% to 100% takes almost the same from 5% to 80%
Did you look at the "energy" page while you were driving? It will give you some useful information based on the last 30 miles of usage. Also check out "a better route planner". I think it will give you the option to put in the desired arrival charge. And finally, check out tezlab app.
Thank you for the suggestions! Yeah we were checking the energy page, but I was more trying to get a sense of the efficiency of the entire trip. I have played around with ABRP but haven't heard of Tezlab. I will check it out. Overall, this was just a test of the Tesla navigation though. Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. :) And thanks to all of you that have used my referral code, this trip was absolutely free. Pretty awesome and I'm super grateful. Yeah I wish I could get her on camera a bit more but she really wants nothing to do with it. Even though everyone seems to love her. 😔
4:02 I wonder if the elevation difference played a major factor. Coming down the mountains from CO you had a lot of potential energy and regen. braking. Cheers, new here, I find road trip videos interesting and learning more about the charging network.
Yes that’s a good observation, I believe it definitely did! That and we were slightly more confident on the way back and we’re going faster than on the way out there. And thank you for the support, I truly appreciate it! 😊
I really wish they would implement that. ABRP allows you to do it so I cannot imagine it would be too difficult for Tesla to implement. And yeah 😅 just needed to wash my windshield. It felt pretty strange though.
Great vlog of your trip... remembering my first test of autopilot, back in June 2017. My MS 75D had air suspension glitches at my delivery and they gave me a P90D for the weekend. It tried to take the first off ramp 10miles from the showroom, and it took me another 100 miles before I trusted it again 😁 Things sure have changed in APLand since then 😁
@@esalenchik It would almost have been possible at their latitude. Colorado is bright from 5:50 am, and in Minnesota is until 9 pm which is a bit over 15 hours. Although I see they left at 10:30 am and arrived next day at at 6 pm. In the middle it jumps from 8 pm to 9 am so they must've decided to sleep somewhere.
Ha ha yes mom has been converted! Now if only her current vehicles would just disappear... A 2001 Saturn and a 1992 Subaru. They show no signs of quitting though. 😔 And yeah, as Muskar pointed out we did not make it in one day. We were pretty lazy and not in a rush. I don't even know why I said that because it was impossible. But if we left early enough, it would have been possible since it was light until around 9:30 in MN that far north!
@Muskar Good eye! Yeah if we hadn't been so lazy on the day of, it could have been possible since it's light so late up in MN. We decided to stay overnight in Council Bluffs IA, which is why I documented that supercharger instead of the Shelby IA one it originally told us to go to.
I live in Denver, but grew up in the Twin Cities. My first road trip will be identical to yours. I plan on ordering in about a month but am waffling between LR and Performance. Have you had a chance to drive the Performance through a Denver winter?
You changed your intro tune. Thanks for this video. I have so far only done max of about 450 or so miles. Stops every 1.5-2 hrs is good for me for bio breaks and stretch legs.
I did! Going to change it every few videos to keep things interesting. :) That was the best part about this is it was like built in bio breaks and leg stretching sessions! And you could explore what was around you without having to rush to get back on the road. :)
License plate in the windshield as a temporary measure so you don't have to mount a front plate on the car? I'm making a trip to "Minnisnowda" next week. I've made a trip out to FL a year ago and didn't worry about it, but that seemed like a good workaround.
I just have it up there permanently because so don’t want to break up the front end of the car. And I feel at least having one displayed somewhere is better than none at all, even though it is still illegal lol. Good luck on your road trip! These cars are phenomenal for them. :)
seeing heavy trucks going 75mph+ is sooo scary especially when in my country, on the highways, they can only go 50max (for cargo trucks) and 62 (for buses)
Great video. I think that black model 3 taking up 2 spaces took them because the other charger that would’ve shared with the other spot would lower that Model 3s charging speed. Tesla already said new chargers will not share and will be for each space.
Thank you! And that definitely makes sense. It was still pretty unnecessary though considering where we were. Not much traffic through Dows IA. 😂 That’s awesome they’re going to do that though!
If a bug shield that attaches on the leading edge of the hood are available, this lessens amount of bugs ending up spattered on the windshield. It may increase the coefficient of drag, slightly, but just slightly. What it does is brings the bugs up to a speed closer to the speed the windshield is traveling and may also lessen impacts with stones which you have already had a problem with.
Hi, I enjoy your videos. Regarding your efficiency would you have snaps shots of you trip screen throughout your trip which includes estimated and actual battery used and end of trip range (blue/gray graph)? Like to see if you experienced close to accurate range estimates by the navigation computer.
Becke Kaaz That was definitely a factor as well! Along with the speed. On the way back we went 75 the entire time and averaged around 282 Wh/mi, so most of that change could likely be contributed to going uphill.
You have the same color model 3 that I want to own eventually. I want a LR RWD M3 in Blue. You also drove right thru where I live in Des Moines, IA. That dows, IA supercharger is fairly new. Hasn't been there too long. There is also another one in West Des Moines at the Hy-Vee grocery store off I-80 heading towards Omaha, NE and they are putting one up in Altoona, IA as well. Not sure if that one is up yet or not. Huge tesla fan here, just not an owner yet.
It is a great color! And we actually stopped at the one in West Des Moines on our way back! Both were empty and it was lovely. Congrats on the future Tesla purchase, these cars are absolutely incredible and you surely won’t be disappointed. Be sure to let me know what you think! Thanks for commenting.
Hey Vasileios, hope all is well. I definitely went over these in the video. It was about 30-40 minutes at each charger and I was getting up to like 583 mi/hr charging at the superchargers! :)
@@TeslasWild You actually spent over an hour on the first charge alone which is a major rookie mistake. You never charge to 100% even if you "needed to grab something". You can "grab something" on the next stop. You charge to about 80% tops. Which should've still have been enough to do the other 180 miles and still have about 10-15% left... You lost 20 minutes on the first stop alone.
GKl Predt If you saw later in the video, we weren’t in a rush and I was definitely not paying attention to the time. I was going off the notifications on my phone. We started at like 10:30am, and we stopped overnight to finish the trip the next day. It was a very relaxed trip.
Yes, thank you for pointing out the trash around the superchargers and cleaning up. Even at destination charging stations there is trash and the connectors are placed on the ground. Stop being so lazy people! Be respectful of other people using these areas. Wish they had live cams at the superchargers so we can see what's happening.
ABRP is awesome, but I really just wanted to trust the Tesla navigation for this trip. Congrats on the upcoming Tesla purchase! That is awesome. You’ll have to let me know how much you love it. 😊
@@TeslasWild I already love it, being so pleased, and much more than that, being so excited by the Tesla Elon Musk Cars. In April 2020, I'm quite sure that I'll be able and allowed to install a wallbox in my building. And so be it. TM3 is the only one dream car, no doubt about it. 😀
Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was really interesting. Actually on the final segment home, we went 80 just for fun and it consumed absolutely no more energy than 75 did. But I already had enough footage at that point lol.
I have not luckily! Well kind of, I bought some All Seasons for the winters but put the PS4S’s back on for the summer and all of my racing. I have put about 8K miles on the PS4S’s and they start with a 9.5/32” tread depth, they are now down to 6/32”, even with all of the racing and that many miles. So not terrible. Planning a video that will include that analysis.
@@TeslasWild Good to hear, I'll be looking forward to that video. I just took delivery of a 2019 M3 Performance a couple weeks ago and didn't think the tires would last me more than 5,000 miles. Hopefully I am wrong!
Thank you for the kind words! And believe me, I really wanted to ha ha just not enough time and there was no good location. We will in the future though, most definitely 😉
What a great video. Again. I'm beginning to understand these Wh/mi in my new SR+. After 589 miles, my car shows 145 kWh and 246 Wh/mi. If you don't mind a little homework, are these good numbers? I can't find the battery capacity for this model, some say 50 others 55 kWh. Range is supposed to be 240 miles at 100% SoC. Thanks a lot.
Hey Juan, thank you for the kind words! So you can always figure out your lifetime range by taking your battery capacity (50kWh = 50000Wh, or 55kWh = 55000Wh) and divide it by your efficiency. So this comes out to 203.3 and 223.6 miles on a full charge, respectively. From what I've seen online, people average anywhere from 220 Wh/mi all the way up to over 400 Wh/mi depending on driving habits and your specific model. So I'd say you're doing pretty darn well. :)
@@TeslasWild Thank you so much for that info, Collin. First you got me hooked on your videos and now I'm even learning a lot from them. Keep them coming, They are great.
Thanks for the video. I’m still trying to get a handle on the efficiency calculation and how that translates to range, so your video helps in that way. Were there any interactions with fellow Tesla drivers at the Superchargers?
I'm glad it helped and you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching. :) Not really since they were all so empty! But the one with the other M3P, we chatted for a little bit. Really nice guy.
You can trust the navigation in Teslas, you get a message if you have to slow down, since you're burning too much energy on a leg. So just drive as fast as allowed 😙🎶
Omg so much I can relate to lol. 4 stops in over 900 miles is cray cray. We did 5 stops for 800 miles. I pretty much didn't use nav on AP on our road trip. I use it daily for my commute tho. I'd recommend ABRP. But yeah I wish the tesla nav would let you program an ending %. And he 3 gopro mounts... Now you know why mine shakes so much lol
Yeah I've played around with ABRP, after watching your video actually lol. But I just wanted to see what the Tesla navigation was like. It worked out pretty well but there are some things that if I were an engineer at Tesla, I would prioritize. And yeah the mount was pretty janky lol. It was good left to right but I had nothing securing it forward to back so it would swing unless I held it. 😂
Road trips are my favorite. :) Totally agree that the route planning needs more options/configurability. For example a combination of a lead foot plus high speed limits in Utah (80, which means you're often driving 85) means that I find the nav system's estimates to be optimistic by as much as 10-15%, so it if says I'll arrive at the next charger or my destination with a 12% SoC, there's a very good chance I won't make it. Hence, I tend to charge a little longer than it recommends until I have at least 20% wiggle room. Would love to be able to set that as a preference. Also, I like more frequent but shorter charges, rather than fewer long stops. That would be nice to configure as well. As it stands, I tend to see what it recommends, but then wind up routing from one supercharger to the next myself.
Alexandre Andrianov Was on a road trip recently where I had to get from Grand Junction to Poncha Springs with a stop for the night in Gunnison (with no charger.) I charged to about 93% because I knew between G and PS I’d be driving straight up the side of a mountain. Most of the other times I charge to more than 70-80% it’s because it takes me longer to fill my tummy than my car’s battery and I don’t make it back in time. 😂
11:36 213kWh for 786 miles. Would be nice when batteries can hold 250kWh for the same weight and cars have a range of 800 real world miles. Now that would be a bad ass trip car. And if they can cycle 2000x before loss that would be 1.6 million miles on one battery. Literally just increasing the density of a battery by 2.2x would be amazing. Even 40% would be amazing. We are almost to the point where EV's will be king on range as well as acceleration and stuff. Almost makes me want to buy a model 3. Not yet though, but still watching.
@@TeslasWild I think Bjorn has a video where he is trying to find the most time efficient speed for the road trips. I guess the method only works if there are enough chargers.
Are you sure about that? Looks like miles to me... I do have degrees Celsius and 24:00 time but all distance measurements are in miles. You can’t just change one unit of measurement for distance and have the rest be another unit...
Tesla’s Wild fair enough, my apologies. Your efficiency on some of the legs was very good for the performance at around 250wh/mile. I’m possibly too used to watching roads trip on the “out of spec motoring” channel who usually gets mid 300’s...but his method is to gun the car between chargers.
lol whoops... Superchargers should have the window cleaning kits! Actually we stopped at one in MN and it did, so that was pretty cool. Although I think it was the hotel it was at that put them out.
Seeing your video a bit late. Happy New Year! If you ever take another long road trip, look into abetterrouteplanner.com/. It does a great job of optimizing so that you are charging only when the car is receiving the highest kW readings. I saw at one if your stops that you were supercharging at 6kW. I’d go insane 😂. Thanks for the awesome video :)
She seems pretty set on it being her next car, which is really cool! Now if only her current cars would experience a sudden and untimely (not really... 2001 Saturn, and a 1992 Subaru) death lol
I felt your mom's anxiety about using auto-pilot. My son and I took a 280-mile trip a few days ago in our Model X and I used auto-pilot for the first time. Scary at first, but it didn't take long to fall in love with it. Can't wait to see your mom's new Tesla!
I made it 9 minutes through your video until you started criticizing the state you were driving through. If Nebraska sucks so much either keep it to yourself or drive around it.
Ha ha I did! It was actually really nice not worrying about time and being as quick as possible, and just being forced to get out and stretch your legs and explore. And yeah, the numbers were more for the video but it was interesting to see. For normal day to day, I don't really pay attention.

Yep, that's what it is. Three more sections like that and you have the mast a turbine sits on.

Great vlog of your trip... remembering my first test of autopilot, back in June 2017. My MS 75D had air suspension glitches at my delivery and they gave me a P90D for the weekend. It tried to take the first off ramp 10miles from the showroom, and it took me another 100 miles before I trusted it again 😁 Things sure have changed in APLand since then 😁
Yay Mom... welcome to the light side 🤣🤣🤣 but I want to know how you left during daylight and arrive while it was still daylight???
@@esalenchik It would almost have been possible at their latitude. Colorado is bright from 5:50 am, and in Minnesota is until 9 pm which is a bit over 15 hours.
Although I see they left at 10:30 am and arrived next day at at 6 pm. In the middle it jumps from 8 pm to 9 am so they must've decided to sleep somewhere.
Ha ha yes mom has been converted! Now if only her current vehicles would just disappear... A 2001 Saturn and a 1992 Subaru. They show no signs of quitting though. 😔
And yeah, as Muskar pointed out we did not make it in one day.
Tesla’s Wild Wow... I imagine the Subaru will go forever, as they do, but your Mom must be taking great care of the Saturn 🤣🤣🤣
@@TeslasWild, agreed. I've done several already. I can't imagine doing a road trip without AP any more.
seeing heavy trucks going 75mph+ is sooo scary especially when in my country, on the highways, they can only go 50max (for cargo trucks) and 62 (for buses)
Wow. I seldom see numbers below 300 Wh/mi on my M3 performance. 210 Wh/mi is insane efficiency for a performance model 3.
Wind Turbine tower :)
Those things are crazy huge!
Very interesting, I don’t know if these exist for the Model 3 but they would help immensely! The bug kill rate in this car is crazy. Thanks!
Any highly aerodynamic vehicle will have the same issue.
If there aren’t any bug shields yet, no doubt there will be some on the aftermarket soon! Heads Up to AutoZone! 😂
Hi, I enjoy your videos. Regarding your efficiency would you have snaps shots of you trip screen throughout your trip which includes estimated and actual battery used and end of trip range (blue/gray graph)? Like to see if you experienced close to accurate range estimates by the navigation computer.
Hey Phil, I'm glad you enjoy them! Thank you for watching. :) Unfortunately I do not, but if I do another roadt trip video in the future, I will. :)
First segment was downhill - second segment basically flat - would account for lower usage initially.
How much time did u spent for charging? Can u also let us know please how fast did u charge in v2 charger point?
Hey Vasileios, hope all is well. I definitely went over these in the video. It was about 30-40 minutes at each charger and I was getting up to like 583 mi/hr charging at the superchargers! :)
@@TeslasWild You actually spent over an hour on the first charge alone which is a major rookie mistake. You never charge to 100% even if you "needed to grab something". You can "grab something" on the next stop. You charge to about 80% tops. Which should've still have been enough to do the other 180 miles and still have about 10-15% left... You lost 20 minutes on the first stop alone.
@@TeslasWild Same with the second stop. You should watch uncle bjorn nyland to learn a thing or two about charging;)
GKl Predt If you saw later in the video, we weren’t in a rush and I was definitely not paying attention to the time. I was going off the notifications on my phone. We started at like 10:30am, and we stopped overnight to finish the trip the next day. It was a very relaxed trip.
Thumbs up for cleaning the supercharger!
Can you clarify please..did you know where the extra supercharger stop was from the map- or did the nav computer tell you it was optional?
I just knew where it was. Didn’t want to show up with like 10% so we just made an extra stop to show up with some extra range.
And perhaps, abetterrouteplanner on your way back... ? 😀 I'll get the blue one next year, SR+ version. So Happy. From France.
Fantastic video. Thank you. Very interesting how much more energy is used when you go 75 mph
Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was really interesting. Actually on the final segment home, we went 80 just for fun and it consumed absolutely no more energy than 75 did. But I already had enough footage at that point lol.
That's really surprising. I was going to conclude that's why my P3D has a lower lifetime avg efficiency cuz we never get to drive that fast in LA.
Nice video👍👍 Cant wait till I can afford a tesla model 3, and when am old enough. I am 15 🙁😂
Have you had to buy tires yet? If so, how long did the stock Michelins last you and what did you end up buying as replacements?
Yay new video. I totally don’t understand any of the kilowatts and all those numbers. I’m so clueless to all that, I’m like ugh? 😂
It's just for comparison with other people driving an electric car.
You really don't need it if you drive a Model 3, it takes care of everything 😙🎶
lol It's just a good way to figure out what the real world range of your EV is rather than the EPA rated range which usually isn't totally accurate.
Where was your a/c set up??
Darn I definitely talked about this in some of the footage but I guess I edited it out. We had it set on LO and at 4 the entire way. :)
8:50 ya thats grand island lol.
Whoa. Why are you charging to 100%???
Great video. Well done. Should have had a drag race with the Viper, or maybe you did and didn't show it :-)
Thank you for the kind words!
Thank you for cleaning the garbage great example
Hello from Poland
Thanks for the video. I’m still trying to get a handle on the efficiency calculation and how that translates to range, so your video helps in that way. Were there any interactions with fellow Tesla drivers at the Superchargers?
I'm glad it helped and you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching. :) Not really since they were all so empty! But the one with the other M3P, we chatted for a little bit. Really nice guy.
Brave mom👍
Ha ha she was very brave! But she ended up absolutely loving it!
You can trust the navigation in Teslas, you get a message if you have to slow down, since you're burning too much energy on a leg. So just drive as fast as allowed 😙🎶
Yeah that's what I was starting to see! We never ran into the speed limit notice but I have seen it in other situations.
@@TeslasWild My mount was all wound up in rubber bands until recently :P
Great review 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. :) Thanks for watching!
Real world range of 278...at highway speed. Make it a combined driving cycle with half city driving and the range will increase a decent amount.
Road trips are my favorite. :)
Totally agree that the route planning needs more options/configurability.
Yes, almost never worth charging past 70%, the charging speed falls significantly.
Otro video como este por favor 🙏🏽
Haré mi mejor esfuerzo 😊
Would love to see him ride in your Model 3 and see what he thinks in turn..
I so should have filmed that! They loved it and actually bought one using my referral code lol...
Collin, you've probably done it already but, go wash that front bumper. lol mind gets bad too.
Ha ha we washed it as soon as we got to Minnesnowta! It just wasn’t worth it in between, there were soooo many bugs! 🐜 🐛 🕷
"Minnesnowta"
Bro why you spinning the camera, almost barfed
Drew T I believe I was talking about the beautiful day in the gorgeous state of Colorado when doing that so I was showing you the scenery.
Pro tip: drive as fast as you can. Charging is always more efficient with a low state of charge and warm battery.
Very true! Thank you. I was mainly nervous on that first segment but on the way home we were driving 80-85 most of the way with no issue.
@@TeslasWild I think Bjorn has a video where he is trying to find the most time efficient speed for the road trips. I guess the method only works if there are enough chargers.
First. Lol. I'm at work, but added to my watch later.
lol nice work!
what is going on with your road in america? they look terrible.. is this normal in the best country in the world? :D
One day I will be able to afford one.
You repeatedly refer to Wh/ mile BUT your display is showing Wh/Km. DOH 😖
@8:56,
You should have stayed there longer, show dinoriders how it feels like to be iced, rather "EVed"
Why didn’t you start at like 5AM!!!!
Ha ha we were too lazy, oh well. Theoretically it was possible to do it in complete daylight though!
12:40 probably so nobody can show up and share the load with him
That would make sense, but it's like dude... Look where we are. lol Not many people passing through Dows IA.
That's probably why they did it but it's incredibly self indulgent. Shame on them.
Loses right to complain about people ICE'ing superchargers at 08:56 (kidding.)
lol whoops... Superchargers should have the window cleaning kits! Actually we stopped at one in MN and it did, so that was pretty cool. Although I think it was the hotel it was at that put them out.
Yeah, I keep a squeegee, a bottle of windex, and some paper towels in the frunk.
don't like music at start
E Gold lol can’t please everyone, and it changes pretty quickly around here. In a couple videos I will write something new.
Don't let the dead bug juices eat in to the paint. Wash the car sooner than later. Mark.
We washed it as soon as we got to Minnesnowta! It just wasn’t worth it to do it in between. Thank you for the tip. 😊
Thanks for the awesome video :)
if your mom needs a referral code i got you xD
😂 Nice try!
@@TeslasWild worth a shot lol
go mom get a tesla your son is showing the way
She seems pretty set on it being her next car, which is really cool!
Can't wait to see your mom's new Tesla!
get rid of that stupid license plate on dash. Other better looking options.
Good job picking up the trash.
People are pigs.
Thank you, yeah it was pretty sad to see. Especially from people who supposedly care about the environment. Oh well, lead by example!
whats with the porn music
I made it 9 minutes through your video until you started criticizing the state you were driving through. If Nebraska sucks so much either keep it to yourself or drive around it.
Importantly looks like you enjoy all the math and charging. Still not for me yet though.
Ha ha I did! It was actually really nice not worrying about time and being as quick as possible, and just being forced to get out and stretch your legs and explore. And yeah, the numbers were more for the video but it was interesting to see. For normal day to day, I don't really pay attention.
