    Always great to see stuff from The Expanse, but what's even better is getting some insight to how the magic works and who the magicians are. I wish we could shine a spotlight on these amazing crews and the stellar work they do more often.

      For real, I'd love it if streaming services started offering more of the "special features" that you can often get with physical media... I know they take extra effort to make/edit, but I know I'd start watching "Expanse: Season 4 - Behind the Scenes" on Prime Video immediately after I finished binging the normal episodes. It seems to me that sci fi especially has an audience that welcomes additional insight into the show (as opposed to, say, comedy shows, which would probably just have blooper reels).

    I watched an episode of the Expanse ages ago on Syfi... couldn't understand it, gave up. After watching your videos with the crew, I started viewing it from the beginning. Wow! I'm hooked, thanks. (and now I'm really noticing how much effects and stuff are involved... shows like The Orville are easy in comparison!)

      I think what makes The Expanse good (beyond the story, and the realism of the physics) is how they use practical effects whenever they can, and only use CG when they have to.

    They generally need to show a lot more of that behind the scenes stunt work stuff (how about in the credits?).
    My brain always just assumes when in doubt that everything is CGI and green screen trickery and nothing is "real" anymore, when its faked by a computer it is not impressive, until i see something like this clip and go "oh sh**, they actually did that for real?!".
    Sometime in the last 10 years it flipped for me from "wow, this was CGI and i didn't even notice!" to "wow, they did that for real and i thought it was just CGI."....

    • @Tinyvalkyrie410
      @Tinyvalkyrie410 2 года назад

      CGI and practical effects are equally impressive but in very different ways. The best effects are a combination of both.

    • @ZeroB4NG
      @ZeroB4NG 2 года назад

      @@Tinyvalkyrie410 It always depends what is shown on screen. ...KITT jumping over other Cars as a Stunt is something special every time and it will never age or look bad.
      But what is the point of having a CGI Mustang "Kitt" jumping over other CGI cars?
      That show was Dead on Arrival because they didn't want to crash real Mustangs for the show and everything ended up looking fake and like a videogame ...and it was even worse because the CGI was still bad/cheap enough that you could easily tell when you were looking at the CGI car.
      CGI is most impressive when you can't even tell that it is there. Game of Thrones for example has tons of CGI that did not register in my brain at all. I noticed the Wolves because they still got uncanny valley going on and of course the Dragons can't be real, but they have like CGI castles in the background in scenes where you don't think about CGI at all and i was really surprised how much of that was going on without me noticing or thinking about it.
      I thought they just had some cool filming locations for it or build stuff or whatever, nope 90% of all of that was fake.
      The car "stunts" they do now in Fast and Furious movies... bullshit, all of it.
      I don't even know why i keep watching that crap.

    Hey Adam. Love your channel. I had a question. I saw your video of your Kylo Ren incognito from a few years back and I love the costume. I've been wanting to get one as my brother and I are planning on trying to go to San Diego Comic-Con 2021. I've heard some bad things about ANOVOS and I haven't been able to get a response from their customer support email. Just wondering if you know is the company still in operation and if they still may be producing the Kylo Ren costume? Thanks and keep up the great videos!

      You can't become a dive master without diving, and it's very much the same in the world of stunts. I'm not saying it's impossible, but the people who work for stunt coordinators are assistant stunt coordinators, stunt riggers, and stunt performers. At one time or another, they were stunt performers. Some stunt coordinators might be better stunt coordinators than they were stunt performers, but they still performed. Without performing, it's nearly impossible to become a stunt coordinator, so go out and perform!

    I absolutely love the expanse and it's approach to realism. But the zero gravity scenes in particular are the one thing that I have a bit of an issue with.
    Not with the practical effects but with the acting of the cast actually. Whenever the characters are in zero G they move in slow motion to sort of point out the difference. But that always pulls me out of the immersion because actual Astronauts don't do that. They move just as quickly and rapidly on the ISS as on the ground. So I wish the expanse cast would do that too, but I guess that won't happen. It's still one of my favorite TV shows of all time.

    • @jacobrodgers7743
      @jacobrodgers7743 4 года назад +2

      I think a certain percentage of that is that we've been trained by 50 years of movies (going all the way back to 2001: A Space Odyssey) to expect that in zero-g. So people would gripe if they moved more realistically. It's a no-win situation.

    • @stormveil
      @stormveil 4 года назад

      @@jacobrodgers7743 That's a totally circular argument though. Just break the cycle and be done with it.

    • @JustinShands
      @JustinShands 4 года назад

      My biggest issue is how perfectly objects in zero G seem to be able to float in the same place relative to the person/ship... there's a reason everything in the ISS has Velcro on it... because reaching your hand out and releasing something in such a way where it has zero movement inertia imparted on it is humanly impossible. I know it's a creative decision for visual effect, but it feels to me like they're slapping you in the face saying, "LOOK, ZERO G!"

    • @AngeloBarovierSD
      @AngeloBarovierSD 4 года назад

      It has been noted elsewhere that people move slow in zero gravity because a mistake is amplified. Flap the wrong body part and your orientation changes. Flinch at the wrong time and your tools float out of reach.
      It's not a physical limitation, it's a mental discipline.*
      Moreover, esp. by S3, you'll see zero G action with faster movements -- especially in combat scenes. Cara Gee is quite adept at it.
      * There is, however, a physical limitation in some of the wire work where rapid movement will actually muck up the overall move. Watch Adam in the rig and imagine if he flailed and arm or leg. He would start to wobble, revealing the tension of the wires (and if those kinds of wobbly shots were to go to post, they'd be hell to fix).
      So, it's both a necessary choice and an artistic one.

    Subscriber feedback: Too much The Expanse content IMO. Are they sponsors? Was feeling that way about Breaking Bad and Mythbusters during some later seasons too. I get that there's fan overlap, but speaking only for myself I'm here for the maker / building stuff videos.

    • @JustinShands
      @JustinShands 4 года назад +2

      I don't think they're sponsors, I think they're "friends of Adam Savage" who invited him on set. Yes, we're seeing a lot of different Expanse videos spread out over a long time, but in reality Adam was probably only on set for a day or two filming all these and wanted to share all the "behind the scenes" stuff he can, since his background is in special effects and he wants to share that excitement with his audience. I don't think that explanation really helps you any, if you're not interested in the "behind the scenes special effects" stuff, obviously there have been lots of these videos recently. Unfortunately I think the only way for Tested to meaningfully distinguish this content and prevent "crossing the streams" for subscribers would be to make additional channels for the different interest "Tested: Makers", "Tested:Still Untitled Podcast", "Tested: Adam Visits"... but of course, RUclips's ad revenue model makes it stupid to spread your content out like that. Tested does use "Playlists" to separate the content, but obviously that doesn't help you getting videos you don't care about from your subscription, since RUclips doesn't have a way to subscribe to just one playlist.

    • @tested

      Amazon is not a sponsor, no. Nor was SyFy. We just love the show, and we just make the most of our time when we get invited up there by filming as much as we can.
