The Expanse is stunning in every regard; the storylines, the acting, the visuals… To someone who usually hates TV it was really weird to be so enthralled and so hooked, right from the first episode. Fantastic show!
7:56 I like how in the screenplay it would just be two words, like " *gets shot* " and suddenly these guys have 2 weeks of work more on their heads. xd
And then a scene like the "meteor beheading" is the result of it. That's one that stayed with me ... First time i watched it i was like "W t f!?! Nooo they didn't!?!?" ;) Came out of nowhere and was completely seamless...
@@peterpain6625 That scene was incredible. The word 'shocking' is often overused to the point of meaninglessness these days, but that was a true shocking moment.

@ilovevegies2 One of the earliest, 'A Trip to the Moon' was around 1902 and moving pictures were invented around 1890. You can watch the whole film here: ruclips.net/video/xLVChRVfZ74/видео.html I like to chuck music on in the background. Finding music to go along with silent films is highly enjoyable, try Queen, Smashing Pumpkins or Moondog... You might like to watch Die Nibelungen, Metropolis and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
As Tim mentions at the end, nearly all practical effects have a "layer" of visual effects on top (keying, rig removal, etc.), so these days "special effects" tends to be used to describe that combination, whereas "visual effects" means 100% CGI and "practical effects" means 100% on-set.
For over forty years, I've done live theater. Mostly opera. Building things that actually work in real life seems to me to be the quintessence of "props". Watching people actually appreciate the artistry that goes into 3 seconds onstage or a fraction of a second in a film truly warms my heart. Thank you!
I just love how the whole Maker Movement is so inclusive, and all over. Many of the professionals are very much open to talking to non-professionals, and often with some amazing exchange of information.
Adam is such an excellent interviewer, since "Mythbusters" was a microcosm of what these shows are putting out on screen, he pretty much knows exactly what questions to ask. You can see how stoked he is.
I really hope that The Expanse crew will release a massive behind the scenes with Adam. I am so grateful that you are doing this, especially since you are a prop builder yourself. Love these episodes!
I love watching Adam learn from some other experts, usually when I watch tested I'm learning from Adam a bit, so it's especially nice to see how he experiences what's kinda like being on the other side of that experience.
Adam, could you also do a piece on their recycling of used props or destroyed items. I would love to see how the industry handles the aftermath, not just the prep.
It is almost all garbage. Goes right into a bin. Most specially built props and effects are owned by the show. So they go into storage if they were expensive, or a set sale at the end of a season, or the garbage bin. The industry is pretty wasteful, though there has been a shift in the last couple years. But when it comes down to it, it is almost always cheaper to throw something away, than store it.
*i would spend soooo many hours (if not days) in this shop just making things...having the proper equipment and materials makes all the difference...and of course the know how to make such projects a reality*

I bet that robot hes talkin about is the one that busts into Fred's quarters to take the protomolecule sample. That thing is a work of art; such a short scene but it almost seems to have an attitude.

Those claw reminded me of Kari Byron's bear claws that she used to shred the plane's skin on the duct-tape plane episode. I wonder if she still has them, or if they stayed at M5?

Adam, thank you for differentiating between special effects and visual effects! I don't think enough people understand the difference.
No great surprise really, people don't even understand what CGI is.
