  • This film was originally broadcast on Al Jazeera English in the run-up to the US elections in 2008.
    Senators Barack Obama and John McCain have been fighting hard for women's votes in the 2008 US presidential election. McCain even selected Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska to be his vice presidential running mate, and Obama has made a point of addressing issues that are crucial to women voters.
    Today many working mothers struggle with finding balance between work and home. The US is the only industrialised country that does not guarantee any financial support during family leave.
    Currently, working mothers can take up to 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave to care for a newborn - compare that to countries like Norway and Sweden which provide a year or more of paid time off. Across the US some states are trying to change that.
    We the People went to the city of Portland, Oregon, where mothers are struggling to balance work and family.

      I waited til I was 28 almost 29, my husband was 35. We had already bought a house, that was one of the best decisions. Now I can stay home and raise our daughter without being stressed. I get to enjoy it. It is so difficult for these moms and I wish there was more help. Be cautious and plan it would be my advice 💖

    Sadly not much has changed over the years with regards to the FMLA & the maternity leave policies for many companies... I worked for the schools in both Ohio & Michigan where I was only given the standard 6 weeks of paid leave which included all of my sick time & personal leave days. I even once had to borrowed days to cover my leave! This is especially difficult if you already have other children to care for! There has to be a better way to handle this dilemma.

    How is no one talking about how they treat you at your job when they’re pregnant. I worked at a fast food restaurant when I was pregnant and still had to work a 3 person job, lift heavy things and never had my lunch on time only a few hours before my shift was over.

    What's wrong with USA? Without a secure population you cannot have a secure economy. Paid maternity leave is essential for healthy secure childhood and future of family foundation. Free healthcare is essential for everyone. Frivolous lawsuits with enormous payout should be stopped completely to balance the expenses..

    Nurse Practitioner’s generally make good money. Should have better sense than to have 3 kids if you must take a bus to work. Second woman, again, medical assistant probably has good benefits but with a medical background knows about birth control. And clearly no common sense to get mixed up with a drug addict. All of these couples need to learn about FINANCIAL PLANNING give this countries policies.

    It works in Europe because Europe consists of relatively homogenous nation-states. You can't have sophisticated social safety nets in diverse societies.

    • @MsJamilaaa
      @MsJamilaaa 7 лет назад

      ethan intellekt I am from Romania- mommies stay home for 2 years on 80% of their salary. We had this long before joining EU. It has to do with governement. In the US, they will choke everyone with their taxes, hence the government neeeeeeeds women to go back and produce and produce. Is a sad system where they introduced the "emancipation of women"- mostly for financial reasons.

    • @bluewingify
      @bluewingify 7 лет назад +9

      Umh, I take it that you've never been to Europe? Immigration happened to us too. 16% of people in Sweden are born abroad. If you would count their children as immigrants too, the number is huge. Sophisticated social safety is something that comes out of ideology. Americans are more induvidualistic, where a swedes are generally more concerned with society as a whole. The truth is, most swedes are very happy to pay high taxes because they see free healthcare, free education and generous parental leave as so much more important than some extra money in their own pockets.

    • @DigoronKavkaz
      @DigoronKavkaz 7 лет назад +2

      bluewingify Haha I go to Europe every year. My family lives in Munich. Lastly the European welfare state was devised before mass immigration and now it's slowly starting to crumble with the influx of foreign third world people. Diversity erodes solidarity and fragments society as Putnam's research concluded.

    • @bluewingify
      @bluewingify 7 лет назад +7

      You are making some good points, but you're also trying to turn a very complex problem into a very simple explanation. Putnams research is interesting, but it was only done in America and I don't think it's something to use when you try to predict the future of Europe. The culture and the history of America is very, very different from countries like Sweden. It's rather far-fetched to claim that immigration is going to destroy the welfare system. American diversity didn't destroy any welfare system - you didn't really have one to begin with!

      I'm from Canada which is very diverse. We also have health care and recently 1 year which was changed to 18 months of paid maternity leave. The paid leave is separate from sick leave, etc. and the leave can be split between the mom and dad if desired.

      no, it's not like that, the society needs babies to survive as a society, therefore women/families need to have kids. Society needs to pay family leave, otherwise there would be no society soon.

      Melania Ricci 1) there is always the option of adoption. 2) there are over 7 billion people on this planet and 3 billion all over the planet are living in poverty 3) If women keep having children this planet will wipe us out 4) there are not enough resources to feed and shelter 8 billion people which is what census believes the world population will reach in 10 years if women don’t stop having kids. 5) 153 million orphans in the world and they need good homes

    If you want to stay home with your baby you need to SAVE while you're pregnant.. save enough to cover yourself for three months. It's a personal decision that needs to be covered by your personal expenses.

    • @pattymayocakes
      @pattymayocakes 3 года назад +1

      What an amazingly tone-deaf attitude. So poor people don't deserve to stay home with their kids? "Sorry you live paycheck to paycheck and can't afford to drop everything and save 3 months of expenses." Plenty of other countries offer months of PAID maternity leave, no matter your income. There is no reason the US can't offer that.

  • @bluebellrose8
    @bluebellrose8 4 года назад +3

    I don't feel sorry for these women. You know before you decide to get pregnant what your financial situation is going to be like. You know what the maternity laws are like in the US and if your company will pay maternity leave. I don't know how these women can go to work and leave a three month old in care or a one week old infant. Downsize your life and survive on one income for a couple of years. I would rather be childless than be in their situation. The single mom with 3 kids is delusional. Why did she get pregnant with a 3rd child? The Spanish lady should move back to Spain instead of whining about the USA. At least she has that option. Until the laws start changing, don't bother having kids and then stressing out about it. Foolish decisions:)
