US Poverty - No Way Out l We the People

  • This film was originally broadcast on Al Jazeera English in the run-up to the US elections in 2008.
One in eight Americans - that is 37 million people - live below the official poverty line. That means these families are often homeless, hungry and have no health insurance.
Over the past three decades, the rich have become richer and the distance between the haves and have-nots has widened.
In many western countries up to 10 percent of children live in poverty. That percentage is double in the US and the numbers are growing. What is worse, American children born into poverty have little chance of moving up and out.
We the People travels to Oakland, California, where a lack of opportunities, little investment in education and the legacy of the drug epidemic of the 1980s have created a cycle of poverty.

When I was growing up, my father was a mere laborer in a factory but the rent was always paid, we had a nice clean apt and good nutritious food to eat. Unbelievably, he was able to put a few dollars away and treat us to a movie or some Chinese takeout at the end of the month. He was a happy man and I didn't even know we were actually poor as most of our friends and family lived in similar conditions. He used to say that with technological advances and other progress, everyone would live semi comfortable and give their families what he couldn't give us. That didn't happen...wish I could go back to those days...

Having a Black president was actually an awakening.
Now, I believe the next step is to humble ourselves and try to accept and reconcile our history as a past with consequences that demand attention in order to obtain complete healing.
Eternal welfare, fix your own problem actitud, neither mass encalceration are solutions.
The actual solution is to get all together and engage into a proactive dialogue.

The things that always puzzles me is, when the Chinese, Japanese, or filipino, Mexicans, Nigerian, Ethiopian all of them come to America without a penny sometimes. But they get help by governmental departments. So where is the help for black Americans? or the people who live in the same level of social status?
I mean it's ridiculous you do full time work and you can't afford to live. Ridiculous! IT's imposed poverty upon them.
The black Americans or other any who were incarcerated before 20 they should be pardoned and let them live their lives and get jobs. But when they are once after 20 if they commit a crime then they should do the time. After they are free, they should be able to do the jobs that are not related to the crime they committed....

I was born in the Appalachian region of Eastern Kentucky, the most economically depressed region in America. I was 15 miles from the nearest town. I worked in hay, tobacco, and other farm/odd jobs for minimum wage till I got enough to move to a nearby town. After moving, I worked at gas stations, a furniture store, and a funeral home to get an automobile. I then moved another 75 miles to a town of about 10,000 and started working in manufacturing. I went to school to be a machinist. I now make over $60,000 a year.

One can look at family structures to determine some of the social problems that put people in poverty - especially young women having children they can't afford. Too many are reliant on the gov - and know they can rely on them for child support but kids growing up with lack of supervision, role models, etc. have much tougher time with education, work ethic, etc. You can't blame the gov for all your problems - and human nature suggest that people often blame others for their situation. Where is the self determination? The responsibility for your own future- your welfare.

Has seen a population boom over the last 10 years it went from about 50k to nearly 175k now. Mostly well off people who got locked out of their cities by even more wealthier people, so they started buying homes where I live. Prior to that you could pick up a house for about 180k and it was a decent home but now "decent" homes run you about 600k to 800k. The long time residents can no longer buy a house because prices skyrocketed. Even rents have skyrocketed I'm fortunate enough to still be able to afford living in a decent area, I'm barely 21 so I am focused on getting a SC license and getting a GC license after that and using that to make more money, it's a tough life atm but I'm trying and luckily things are good for now. It's sad to see this happening all around the country.

I understand being super-broke - believe me, I've been there, but most people don't know how to eat decently when poor. Dried beans, lentils, legumes, brown rice, potatoes, onions, and celery all are super inexpensive, they go a long way, and they combine to make yummy and healthy food. Do not purchase canned, frozen, or prepared foods - they are too expensive. Make your food in batches from scrap, freeze the excess for later use. If you are poor, steaks should not even be considered. You can grow herbs in pots in the window or on a small balcony. Shop for veggies at the 99C only store - you can get 5 pounds of potatoes, onions, or sweet potatoes for 99 cents. You have to be nuts to shop at Von's or Albertson's if you're broke.

It’s something about a professional look and feel when you’ve been so used to just wearing whatever because you have lost hope and only live a repetitive lifestyle but when you get that opportunity to put on a suit and tie ... that’s a wonderful feeling and it makes you view yourself differently and others respect you a lot more. I’m a woman and I wear suits and ties and button up shirts on interviews and important events and you definitely stick out as classy! I was so happy to see shamanek put on that suit because she went from an angry mad black woman to a professional hard working loving mother figure ... that’s real and I am praying for her that she prospers and gets all she can! There are so many children so upset at their parents but it takes growth and understanding to know what your parents really went through to understand it’s. Not their faults! I saw so much anger in her eyes about her life and I pray that anger turns into love ❤️

Education is the way...In the United States we have Pell Grants, American Opportunity Credit, Etc. Anyone living at the poverty level would be eligible for these programs. Go to your local community college. Their financial aid department will assist you with applying for financial aid. At the community college level, your financial aid will be enough to complete a degree. You can become a Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, X-Ray Technician, Laboratory Technician, Medical Records Technician, etc., at most community colleges. The medical field will offer the most opportunity for employment.

I have a pretty good job and my lady has a income as well. We have one child and we do pretty well. I know that God has blessed us to be in the position we are in but there are things we have done as well to maintain it. We practice financial literacy and we do not live beyond our means. I believe there is a way out of poverty for many of us if they are taught financial wellness. I am teaching my step son to prepare to get a CDL license and a degree. As a black man my job is to be in the home in service to my family providing and protecting. I admit that times can become rough for us in the blinking of an eye but I believe we could help people turn their lives around through PROPER financial discipline.

Yetta Harris unfortunately, we are not taught about how to save, invest or build generational wealth. Whenever I have that discussion with Black people, I get met with a lot of anger, resentment, excuses and the blame game.
I even had an argument with my own brother about it because he was telling me to have my son find out about it on his own. When honestly, wealthy white people actually hold their kids hands even as adults and show them the way. I don’t want someone giving my son wrong information or discouraging him from being great.

I grew up in a single family household. BUT my mother knew the value of education and surrounded herself with like minded people. You cant start after you decided a life of crime was not the way. You can get a second chance of course but you have to not put yourself in the system and come out tainted with that. High school is not going to cut it. You have to have a skill that is transferable and keep that skill marketable. Never get complacent. I look at this poor guy and his girl and I see many people like him that I know. Not realistic and you have to get away from where you are sometimes. You have to know that you are also competing with others who maybe are a little bit more marketable than you. Its a vicious circle and sometimes for some folks unavoidable.

There are a lot of ways to solve all this problems. Take a look around. Agriculture is the second biggest economy in every country. But agriculture in United States is only for the rich farmers because the market is not open for small farmers. Every year the farm bill money goes to the rich farmers and no help available for the small farmers. Transportation is the third largest economy of every nation. But there are no transportation jobs in United States because there are no transportation businesses besides car makers. Transportation is very important to economy. It is one of the reasons why foreigners are loving Asia. Asian Countries has all kinds of transportation. I have 5 discoveries that can make a good business and bring a lot of jobs.
