I was a pitcher in baseball and always threw a football with the same finishing motion or flick finishing with thumb up. I never realized the motion of flicking thumb down towards crotch was the proper way to throw a football...63 years old and still learning....thanks for the insight!!!
I'm so glad that Warren Moon got a mention, for my money and along with Dan Marino; he was the best QB never to have won a Super Bowl ring. Who doesn't love this guy; he's such a font of knowledge and a great communicator. If more teachers were like JT O'Sullivan perhaps we'd have a higher standard of QB?
Played 3 years of semi-pro (amateur, really) football in Brazil as a Linebacker/DE and was never able to throw the ball correctly. Thanks for the video!
Yeaaap, played all throughout middle school and high school as a middle linebacker and never really learned how to throw the ball right. No matter what, just don’t throw a real spiral lol.
Here in the Netherlands kids are not used to the shape of a football. Well... they are to what we call a football. But just throwing and playing catch proved quite difficult and we really want to spent time on American sports where I work! That's why this video and so much more on your channel is really useful. There are some 10 yeard olds around me at my job that are able to throw the ball a good 20 yards with a beautiful spiral after just two weeks or so!
As someone who grew up playing basketball it's interesting how many of the same fundamentals apply to shooting. That drill on your back was a drill I was taught for having a consistent release. Great stuff. This channel needs to blow up yesterday.
Been watching for months and I already know this is gonna be a Million+ subscriber channel. Too much interesting and important information coming from a guy who knows how to put in the work and how to effectively comminicate complex football topics. I see this channel growing exponentially, we just have to wait as you keep blowing up.
Warren Moon was nice. #1 Oiler. For me its ring finger on the second lace only. Ball on the shelf above the pec. Hand as a C and not as a U when bringing it back J-motion, then let it rip. Find your stroke like a golfer. Great series JT!!!
I've seen Donovan McNabb throw a excellent spiral from awhile back or on days he wanted it more than anyone... an underappreciated and underrated QB for sure, just wished he showed up in SB XXXIX
you have the best camera ever. No one seems to really care about the resolution or even think the audience even notices a good camera and a bad. You have a great camera
That index release is perfect for accuracy, too. Ive taught both my sons to think of the index point being where you want the ball to go. I had someone teach me years ago and he threw a ridiculously beautiful spiral and had crazy arm strength. Spent multiple years throwing with him and would spend hours perfecting accuracy, timing, etc.
I love how cool he looks talking and then when he tries to let it go and catch it, he makes such a nerd face and it is all gone. Great job, great vids, great material for QB upstarts. A lot of useful material that helps you understand the game from QB perspective.
i was taught that drill when you grip the tip and flip it on top of your fingers i learned that when i was about 10yrs old absolutely helped me progress to be a better QB
@Yassine DL Sizes: 9 years and under - size 5 football 10-12 years - size 6 football 12-14 years - size 7 football 14 years and up - size 9 so you should uese a size 9, that is also what J.T. uses. And yes, they use size 9 in the NFL
I agree. Warren Moon threw the prettiest ball I've ever seen. I don't recall EVER seeing a wobble or flutter ball from that guy. Short or long, every throw was a spiral clinic.
Love your channel. I got my 14yr old to watch your vids. He is a soon to be freshman in HS. A lineman. He see's different aspect of the game now by listening to you from a QB's point of view. It's help me to teach him to see the game better. Thanks. Aslo maybe from time to time can you give your thoughts, views. pointers, etc on other offensive positions.
Thank you ("it's what works for you") I have large hands 10"+. I have a similar release, except I'll release off different fingers depending on pass. I went 4 years w/out throwing (spinal fusion) at almost 50 and 2nd day throwing, I was dead accurate at 35-45 yards, and about 70 distance. Arm strength can't be taught, and supposedly the last to go
College Qb, and Yep, you have to “feel” how to spin it. Mess with the grip, grip pressure, thumb position…you have to find what works for you. But it’s all about spinning it -
JT! Happy New Year! I was wondering if you could do a Super Bowl 48 (DEN vs SEA) Peyton Manning breakdown. Did Manning underperform or was the SEA defense on another level? Thank you in advance!
I played football for what seems like a billion years. I played QB and occasionally played some DB. My advice would be to practice throwing a football. It is different when compared to throwing a baseball. A football is thrown with the hand having a kind of "karate chop" motion whereas a baseball throw has the palm facing the target. The football is not resting on the palm during the throw. It is actually something of a bizarre question to ask in that and makes me wonder if the person has ever tried throwing a football.
Maybe u can answer this for me. I throw a good sprial have a good arm, but why is it when I throw a deep ball, when it starts to descend the nose of the ball turns to the right (I'm right handed) instead of nose diving. Any chance u know why?
The wonders of editing. I was going to say. Knocked that roll back out like you were still at practice everyday. Haha. Good luck and god bless for 2020.
I've thrown while cupping the ball sometimes. To me, it doesn't bother my spiral because my hands are 10.25 in. But you are correct though. However I do notice when throwing in really bad rain, having a heavy palm grip reduces slippage.
I once saw Kyle Orton throw a pretty spiral when he was a Cowboy in 2012 or 2013. True story! And I don't know why it has stuck in my head to this day as I'm not even a Cowboy fan.
Also helps if you have big giant enormous hands. I throw like a superstar with a high school football, like a backup with a ncaa ball and like a fan with a nfl ball. Baseball is more for me I think
JT what do you think about a video where you tell a couple stories about the everyday life of a NFL player? Maybe a little bit about hazing and different locker room cultures. I think that would be very interesting!
I throw through my pinky. So ring, pinky on the laces, thumb under the ball. Should be able to hold the ball with those three and have the space btwn the palm and hand; adjust fingers to get the comfy/strongest spot. Place my middle, index on the ball and let it rip
Just a commentary. Remember the position of the reference lines that college footballs have? Well, I remember as a kid that Troy Aikman said that his main grip was index and thumb around those reference lines and every other finger placed over the laces to have a good grip as a whole. I myself had problems with that because my palm hands are not like a square, they are more like a pentagon, wider in the middle finger and narrower in the little and index fingers. I found more problems because as I've said I was a kid, and now as an adult I am about the size of Doug Flutie so my palms are not as big as the palms of a 6' 4 monster. If you manage to keep your shoulder below an imaginary line that your elbow would trace in relation to the horizon, I mean by the time you are gaining momentum in your arm, once you turn back to the grip showed here you'll feel a lot more comfortable throwing. Also I'd like to mention one more thing, Pedro Martinez, a HOF pitcher recommends that you finish the movement of your arm as something incredibly important, if it happens that you find an obstacle that doesn't allow you to complete the natural movement of your arm you better get rid of it. The juicy part of the latter is that by "finishing" the throw you avoid a lot of force applied in your shoulder, you know, like a "full swing" of your arm. Another good tip by him about why is important to keep the elbow above the shoulder is because that way you avoid to mess with your elbow ligaments. The last two aspects are just to keep you healthy. First time that I see one of your videos, happy to be here, thanks for the good work.
Hey JT have you ever thought of filming segments outside and just doing voiceover? Love the armchair thing and your, essentially, classes. But it'd be nice to see you whip it outside too to demonstrate points.
What are the best exercises/drills to help imrove arm strength. I'm the 5th string QB on my team and arm strength is the biggest thing holding me back.
Turning your thumb down at release is called pronating. It's a natural motion of the arm for all overhead sports. You can clearly see this during a tennis serve. The racket is completely turned over.
"If you're playing T-ball you're not going to go out there and start throwing 4 seam fastballs right away". That's an understatement. No one throws any pitches in t ball, let alone fastballs 🤣
We had a problem with throwing 'dying ducks'. The other day, we thought that, if we made a small adjustment and canted the throwing hand a small fraction on an inch to the right, not to the left, then we could likely solve the problem. We did so and threw the ball. To our amazement, the ball zipped through the air, hit the ground about 18 yards away, and spun like a top! No more 'dying ducks'! Problem solved!
How do you feel about Bruce Arians offense? I loved watching them in AZ but Jameis Winston takes it to a whole new level, it is both so fun and yet horrifying to watch.
