Taker did an interview earlier this year saying he told Vince that he needed to be in the loop if stuff like this was going to happen again. He also said he couldn't pull rank on a guy like Bret who had been around the company much longer than he had been. I think Taker was more upset that he was left in the dark and didn't know what was going down.
@Domo Jones If Vince had just forced Bret and Shawn to sit down with him for a couple of hours and hash all of their sordid business out, then, this could've all been avoided.
@@NickMichalak Apparently Bret just wanted to make sure that HBK was willing to put an opponent before him before dropping the belt to him.
What Taker suggested that couldve been done was (after this shit went down) to have Bret drop the belt to him, who Bret respects, and then he lose it to Shawn down the line. But Vince was too worried that Bret might leave the WWF for WCW the next day with the title.

Adwaith Ratnakaran That last part is a lie told by everyone. Bischoff confirmed that Bret’s contract with Vince ended in December, so they weren’t allowed to debut him then. The other part is, Vince won a huge settlement in court after the Madusa debut on Nitro in December of 95 (showing up with the WWF women’s title on Nitro). There was no way that Bischoff would try to do that again.
It wasn’t his deal, he took it upon himself to include himself in other people’s deals. Kind of gay.
I still haven't forgiven Shawn for putting Marty through the barbershop window 29 years ago.

The Undertaker is easily the highest respected WWF/WWE Superstar Of All Time. I saw him live in the late 90s. When he walked past us going to ring, it's not all gimmick. The Dead Man has a "presence"about him..
Taking absolutely nothing from Undertaker, I can't agree that Undertaker was more highly regarded than Sting, Hulk Hogan or HHH. All were great.

it wasn't just the montreal screwjob that made everyone hate him. it was everything he did, from the stuff with vader, to trying to bury the rock, not wanting to lose the belt to stone cold, overselling for hogan, it's how he was as a person. with that being said he is one of the best of all time, no debating his skill that's for sure.
The Hogan thing was pretty funny though to see him get his comeuppance

You don't often hear someone of HBK's level... the top of his chosen profession... admit that when he would get home and look in the mirror he didn't like who he saw despite the image he portrayed on TV. Very awesome to see such humility and honesty from him. Mistakes don't need to define us, we can be remembered for how we bounced back rather than how we fell and he is a great example of that.
It makes you realise just how unhealthy the working environment in the WWF was at the time. Vince was getting his employees to legit turn on each other and was causing enormous damage to their mental health in the process.

Fun Fact: The night before Survivor Series '97, WWF held a house show at Cobo Hall in Detroit. My family and I were in attendance and the fact that Bret was leaving for WCW was no secret to wrestling fans in the know. The Hart Foundation was in the main event and near the start of that match the crowd was chanting, "Why Bret, why?" Hitman put one foot on the bottom rope, hoisted himself up just slightly, and rubbed his thumb to his index and middle fingers to indicate it was for the money. It was such a heel move and the crowd ate it up!
No doubt it was about the money, but Bret didn't know that the price for that money was going to be his career!

Shawn asked for a release to WCW multiple times. Vince even had to keep paying him through his “back injury” to avoid him going to WCW. Once WCW was out of business and Shawn was going to be released he was healthy enough for a comeback.
Honestly, listening to this, I think that Shawn's injury during the Casket Match at the 1998 Royal Rumble couldn't have come at a better time (not that I wrestlers to be injured). Rather than performing with a locker room and in front of a crowd with festering resentment, he disappeared practically right after the Montreal Screwjob, stayed out of sight and out of mind for four years and let time heal the wound, and returned to an immense wave of love and goodwill.

I always have to wonder how Sean's first run would've been like if the ego wasn't causing so much trouble. His second run was some of, if not his best work and he put over a lot of guys, helped to build up and legitimise people like Orton and Cena, two of, if not the biggest stars of the last two decades, his work in ring was near flawless.
Ive always said the exact same thing. Imagine how amazing that first run could have been if he had been clean and humble. He came back from what was supposed to be a career ending back injury and wrestled what may have been any single performers greatest stretch of matches basically while starting to be past his prime at the time. 2nd Run was SS 1997 to RR 1998 and he had one more (loosing) match as public retirement Bowout at WM 1998. He didn't do much those 2 1/2 months. 1996 was way better Championship Reign, yet 1995 was his stellar epitome year!

I've never understood how someone with so much charisma and can deliver such a good promo can be so horrible during interviews. Every time I hear an HBK interview, I feel like I need a WWE crowd shouting, "WHAT?"
It may be the case that wrestlers feel more exposed when speaking candidly out of character. Their own personal character is on display when discussing personal stuff so they cant hide behind the gimmick. Shawn hickenbottom was speaking here. It's like when actors appear shy compared to their characters when they get up on stage to deliver their oscar speech.

I still remember The Takers debut at that daytime Wrestle mania in the 80"s and I remember being literally scared of him as a young kid.. But I don't blame HBK for being scared of him as he is 6ft 9inch and 320lbs and a total legend.
For all of you that don't understand him, his overall point is he only cared about Takers opinion, somehow Vince got Taker to at least not beat up Shawn, and Shawn and Bret reconciled once they both humbled themselves enough to understand the other perspective which from Shawn Michaels was him coming to the realization that everyone hated him. Dude is inarticulate but he isn't that hard to understand people.

Between this story and the HBK vs Austin Wrestlemania story where Taker was supposedly ready to "make sure" Shawn did the job for Austin, I gotta say Taker and Shawn have a fascinating dynamic between them. Throw in they had the first Hell in a Cell match and Shawn had the career sidelining injury in a casket match with Taker THEN Taker is the retirement match for Shawn. Lotta history between these guys.
Shawn and Bret epic feud, Stone Cold ready for the takeover, everything that would make the Attitude era is being set in place. Witnessing this still gives me the best feeling in the world.

Shawn was doing what he was told to do, and because he did what Vince wanted him to do, he became the most hated man in the business. Yeah, he had a bad reputation (and deservedly so), but this really put a target on his back when it didn't have to. On another token, Bret brought this on himself, too.
You're right. Brett shoulda left the WWE like an business either quiting before the match or losing the match to give Michael's a shove that he was better. Could been a nice shoot going to wcw wanting what he just lost, which is kinda what happened anyway. @Raul Ramirez Bret as great as he was he had problems with putting over people as well as Shawn had , but no matter what you do if Vince want you to do something then you will do it or you can leave , this is exactly what would have happened if Vince told Bret that he either drop the belt or he can go , but it would seriously hurt the reputation of WWF and their world title at that time so business wise it had to be done cause at those times WWF was losing hard to WcW , I agree that it was a shitty move but I have to say that Bret and Vince was the wrong one here , Shawn did what he was asked , if he said no then they would have asked someone else probably, Bret played a big part in this screwjob as well as Vince

i dont think kids of today, that werent alive when this all went down... can really understand just how incredible these interviews are. For decades we wanted to hear their takes but never thought we would. I never in a million years expected fucking taker doing podcasts and shit, its so awesome. But its normal for active wrestlers today so its hard to appreciate the same i think.

Its true tho. That's one thing that never really gets mentioned because of the way it's played off in character. I'm sure he would have much perfered brett losing to someone else and then him beating that person to avoid the heat. However , he may not have cared about the heat due to his closeness with Vince but it has to suck having the entire locker room hate and not trust you if you're susposed to be family and run the road 330 days a year.

Watching this reminds me of the scene in the biopic Cobb. Ty Cobb was one of the greatest baseball players ever..if not the greatest. On and off the field, though, he was known as a mean, rotten, cold hearted S.O.B. Keep in mind the guy was born in the 1880's, so by the time of the inaugural year of the Baseball HOF, he was included. Unanamiously voted in and invited to the celebrations. After the dinner, there was a party with the old players and managers and Cobb wanted to join but wasnt let in. HBK reminds me of that. Sure hes on the list as one of the best ever, but now, he's older, and balding, and his eyes crossed over (not poking fun, just pointing out that he was always vain about his looks) and all the ppl he stepped on, or buried or kept down and he wants to be "one of the boys", but no one wants him around. Same with Nash. Yeah, an apology goes a long way, but when youre told for 20 years that youre a jerk and say only "I know", youre not going to be believed when you say that NOW you know you shouldnt have been.

From all the interviews I've seen, it's clear that Taker had the respect of the majority backstage and was certainly an authority figure

He made the Mr mc character the bad guy and stuck a rocket up Austin's ass to get him to the top. If one of those two things dont happen the attitude era never happens and WWF could damn well be out of business.
@Raul Ramirez It looks like you started watching wrestling when stone cold went over. HBK was there carrying the show years before Austin. I will agree though that Austin propelled WWE to heights that HBK couldn't.
